Born Jackie Jean Crouch on June 9, 1926, in the barely-there town of Kensett, Arkansas, to a 17-year-old baker and a 13-year-old girl, Georgia Holt didn't have it easy. Her parents separated when she was young, and, according to a 1978 People Magazine profile, she mostly stuck with her itinerant, dirt-broke father, who began hitchhiking West from The Natural State in search of any kind of living. As she bounced from town to town, Holt's father ultimately hit upon the brilliant notion of exploiting his young daughter's vocal gifts and striking good looks.
It worked. Kind of. In a situation Holt likened to Peter Bogdanovich's classic father-daughter comedy "Paper Moon," the precocious young singer earned the pair enough money to get by and won more than a few beauty pageants. But this life on the road led her to make questionable decisions of her own,...

His wife Allison Holker confirmed his death in a statement on Wednesday (14 December), writing: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to share my husband Stephen has left us. Stephen lit up every room he stepped into.
“He valued family, friends and community above all else and leading with love and light was everything to him. He was the backbone of our family, the best husband and father, and an inspiration to his fans.”
Holker continued: “To say he left a legacy would be an understatement, and his positive impact will continue to be felt. I am certain there won’t be a day that goes by that we won’t honour his memory. We ask for privacy during this difficult time for myself and especially for our three children.

Georgia Holt, best known as Cher’s mother but an actress, model, and singer in her own right, has died. Cher confirmed the death on social media. Holt was 96 and no details on her death were given, although it was previously revealed she was hospitalized with pneumonia earlier this year.
Cher said she had been “very careful” to avoid exposing her elderly mother to any potential illnesses during the pandemic.
“We have a little bubble that we’ve had all this time,” she said. “We wear masks, and there’s not very many of us. It’s my sister, my brother-in-law, my mom, my assistant. And we stay far apart from each other.”
She added: “I have to be careful too because I have asthma. … I have different health problems.”

The Cher Show is packed with so much of her that it takes three talented actresses to portray the 72-year-old legend. The Broadway musical also depicts many characters from Cher’s life — Phil Spector, Greg Allman, Robert Altman, Rob “The Bagel Boy” Camilletti and her mother Georgia Holt (played with hilarity by Emily Skinner) — but some have noted that Cher’s son, Chaz Bono, is mainly absent on stage. That doesn’t mean that he isn’t mentioned. In fact, he is referred to by his name in the musical — even as a baby,...

Madonna. Beyoncé. Rihanna. In the history of mononymous entertainers, perhaps one of the most legendary is, of course, Cher. We've always known her as, well, Cher, so it's no surprise that one would find themself curious about her real name. While "Cher" has been the iconic singer's stage name since she hit the scene back in the early '60s, the outspoken 72-year-old - who recently shared her impressive exercise routine in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres - was actually born Cherilyn Sarkisian. Her father, John Sarkisian, was an Armenian-American truck driver and her mother, Georgia Holt (born Jackie Jean Crouch), was a model and bit-part actress with claimed Irish, English, German, and Cherokee ancestry.
At the start of her career, Cher recorded songs under the names Bonnie Jo Mason and Cherilyn. When she hooked up with Sonny Bono (both personally and professionally), they originally adopted the band name Caesar & Cleo.
