Inside Out scribe Pete Docter revealed something strange in an Oscar nominee roundtable with New York magazine: a new way for winners to express thanks for people and organizations they can't fit in their speech. Is this a step up or a treacherous step back for the Academy Awards? While speaking with Straight Outta Compton co-writer Andrea Berloff and Carol screenwriter Phyllis Nagy, Docter brought up the new option for Oscar winners. Docter: This year, apparently, they’re doing a thing where you can ahead of time give a list of names so you don’t have to read them. They’ll scroll along the bottom. Berloff: Is that true? Nagy: Yes, it is true. It was in my package from the Academy. It’s 80 words. If you email them a list by some point in February — my mother, my sister, my agent — they will scroll it across the screen as you speak.

When it comes to this year’s Academy Awards, no word is more buzzworthy than “diversity”. For the second year in a row the Oscars have nominated only white actors in their four main acting categories, sparking backlash and, as a result, inciting the Academy to announce new changes to tackle its “diversity problem”.
Amidst another year of #OscarsSoWhite trending on Twitter, however, the fact that 2015 has been an exceptionally strong year for women has been largely overlooked. Three of this year’s best picture nominees (Brooklyn, Room, Mad Max: Fury Road) are female-centric and feature strong female protagonists in the center of the action. In fact, even outside of those films and their performances, a number of women are nominated for best picture as producers, as well. Kristie Macosko Krieger is nominated for Bridge of Spies, Blye Pagon Faust is nominated for Spotlight, Dede Gardner...

Neil Patrick Harris has hosted every awards show imaginable, but sometimes not even he can help it when a joke falls flat. The performer had a couple of high moments (that opener!), but other times the risks he took just didn't pan out. One in particular found the How I Met Your Mother alum joking about producer Dana Perry's outfit just moments after she spoke about her son's suicide during her acceptance speech. Perry accepted the award for Best Documentary Short Subject for Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press [...]...

There may have been few surprises among the winners at Sunday night's Academy Awards, but one surprise was how political their speeches were. After all, in recent years, political statements have largely been unwelcome guests at the Dolby Theater.
In past years, artists from Vanessa Redgrave to Richard Gere to Michael Moore have been criticized for using their time at the Oscar podium to raise controversial issues before a worldwide audience. In an evening of glitz, glamour, and self-congratulation, mentioning the sometimes cruel realities of life beyond Hollywood Boulevard makes winners seem like party poopers. Mentioning God, your cast and crew, your spouse and kids, and Harvey Weinstein is fine, but mentioning the plight of migrant farm workers is a little too much reality for the dream factory.
Nonetheless, several winners at the 87th annual Oscar ceremony used their victory speeches to mention causes important to them. Some of those...

Hollywood — "I want to dedicate this to my son Evan Perry. We lost him to suicide. We should talk about suicide out loud. This is for him." It's a jarring and unexpected soundbite from a show rooted in the glitz and glamor of Hollywood - and yet not so much when you consider the subject: Dana Perry, producer of Documentary Short Subject winner "Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1." The film focuses on the employees of a 24-hour crisis line for veterans and their families who are struggling with financial, physical and emotional troubles, including thoughts of suicide. "Of course, I do have a personal connection to the subject," said Perry backstage. "I lost my son. He was 15 when he killed himself; and since that happened, what I said, I think I said something [onstage] like, 'We need to talk about suicide out loud to try to work against the stigma and silence around suicide,...

On Wednesday, the Academy featured the 2014 Oscar-nominated films in the Documentary Short Subject and Documentary Feature categories.
Clips from the nominated films were screened, and nominees for all 10 films took part in panel discussions, talking about their own films and sharing insights on the craft of documentary filmmaking and the greater issues their nominated films explore.
Two-time Oscar winner and Academy documentary branch governor Rob Epstein opened the evening with the documentary shorts.
Epstein won the Oscar for documentary feature in 1984 for The Times Of Harvey Milk and in 1989 for Common Threads: Stories From The Quilt. His other credits include Lovelace (2013) and the TV documentary “And The Oscar Goes To…” (2014)
During his opening remarks, Epstein said the theme that ran through the nominated shorts were “life beginning and life ending.”
All the filmmakers conceded the Cinéma vérité was what was so powerful, so intimate.

Over a period of nine months, Goosenberg Kent and the film’s producer, Dana Perry, along with their film crew, filmed at the National Veterans Crisis Line, the only suicide hotline dedicated exclusively to U.S. veterans. They spent long days filming responders as they fielded calls from veterans in crisis and on the verge of suicide. Rather than feature interviews with veterans and their families, the filmmakers presented the subject matter in cinema verite style through "overheard" conversations -- where viewers can only hear the responder's side. The result is the Academy Award-nominated HBO short documentary "Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1." Indiewire recently spoke with multiple Emmy Award-winning director Goosenberg Kent about how she managed to gain such amazing access, logistical challenges and the film's connection to "American Sniper." Starting this week, fans of the radio anthology series Suspense will be able to hear new versions of their favorite classics broadcast on Sirius Xm BookRadio 80 two nights a week.
The updated Suspense airs Wednesdays (7:30pm Et/4:30pm Pt) and Sundays (11:30pm Et/8:30pm Pt), and Episode #1 is an adaptation of Lovecraft's 'Cool Air,' starring Adrienne Wilkinson and Daamen Krall.
The original Suspense, which ran from 1942-1962, was known as “radio’s outstanding theater of thrills” and featured a virtual 'who’s who' of Hollywood stars, including horror legends Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Vincent Price, and Peter Lorre. Though many of its episodes were murder mysteries, the original Suspense made many forays into pure horror, such as its adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Dunwich Horror and Curt Siodmak’s Donovan’s Brain.
As for the new Suspense, it goes in a somewhat different direction.

The documentary film Boy Interrupted -- to air on HBO on Monday August 3 with a DVD release to follow on August 4 -- not only tells the story of a 15-year-old's death by suicide, but it also tells the story of a mother's anguish dealing with her son's lifelong disease of bipolar mental disorder. You want to brush it off, this is someone else's tragedy, but the truth is, frightened parents are hearing more and more of such cases. Something's up in the Zeitgeist: my own daughter, now in her early 20's, has attended four funerals of classmates, graduates of her Riverdale private school, in the past few years. And what about the granddaughter of another friend, a talented poet attending a summer program in Italy: what made her hang herself? And another boy this past spring, hurling himself...

- On HBO tonight, I'll finally have the opportunity to catch a docu film that I managed to miss at Sundance. Hart and Dana Perry's Boy Interrupted tells the heartbreaking story of Evan Perry: the heart-wrenching profile of a family torn apart. Using footage of their son Evan – taken from the moment of his birth throughout childhood and adolescence and supplemented by interviews with family, friends, doctors and teachers, Dana and Hart Perry share the intensely personal story of every parent’s worst nightmare: the death of a child by suicide. Casual and innocuous before his death, the home movies provide a visual record of Evan’s life, and help create an intimate portrait of this vibrant, troubled young man.. It looks like the 25th annual Sundance Film Festival is borrowing the late Harvey Milk's famous line: You gotta give 'em hope.
Despite the war-weary, economically ravaged state of the nation and the industry, the Sundance Institute eagerly announced the 2009 competition lineup Wednesday. And while it certainly maintains a somber quotient, the festival roster includes enough fresh takes on old genres (think romance, sci-fi and politics) to satisfy moviegoers and industry players looking for some warmth during the snowy 11-day event.
At least that's how fest organizers Geoffrey Gilmore, Sundance's longtime director, and John Cooper, its programming director, choose to see it.
