Terrific performances from Devon Bostick and Natalia Dyer can’t save this cliched drama about a college drop-out who falls for a troubled young woman
“She might be crazy, or she might be the sanest person I’ve ever met.” Some cringingly obvious lines really lower the tone of this deep south melodrama (released in the US last year with the title Tuscaloosa). It’s an adaptation of Glasgow Phillips’s novel about a white kid in early-70s Alabama: a psychiatrist’s son, he falls in love with one of his dad’s patients. The director is Philip Harder, a veteran music promo maker who evokes time and place with the intoxicatingly intense colour and heightened reality of a William Eggleston photograph. But his film, though well-meaning, is disappointingly tame and soap opera-ish.
What it has got going for it is a trio of gusty, heart-on-sleeve performances. Devon Bostick is terrific as Billy,...

She teams up with the pair after Elmer offers to show her the way to a nearby Army outpost. At the same time, a curse put upon the white man by the great Apache Geronimo spreads across the desert, turning all the people into zombies! Smiley follows Ashley, a young woman freshly arrived at university, who finds herself caught up in the online urban legend of Smiley, a mysterious, seemingly supernatural killer who kills via a social networking site… After testing out the urban legend for herself, Ashley becomes paranoid and starts to think she sees Smiley everywhere, stalking her. But how can that be if he’s not real?
Literally a slasher movie for the internet age, Smiley features of cast of YouTube “celebrities” including Shane Dawson and Toby (Tobuscus) Turner and comes from writer Ezra Cooperstein, who also happens to be the head of sales for Maker Studios, one of the premiere producers of YouTube content. The plot is a riff on the classic ‘Bloody Mary’ urban legend,...

As Maker Studios continues to diversify its offerings, it is buttressing its existing properties with more desirable content. The multi-channel YouTube network's Cartoonium channel has inked a deal with Ag Properties to add two family-friendly programs--Care Bears and Strawberry Shortcake--to its library. Cartoonium is Maker's attempt to reel in the millions of toddlers who have made channels like Sesame Street into YouTube success stories. At launch, Cartoonium only offered an original series from ShayCarl and a few syndicated programs originating from online cartoon channel Kabillion. Through the new deal, two of American Greetings' most popular holdings will join the weekly schedule. The iconic Care Bears are now on their fifth series, though I doubt much has changed for the saccharine ursine characters since they first appeared on greeting cards in the 80s. Strawberry Shortcake also began in the 80s and re-launched in the 00s. “Parents who grew up with Care...

Finally, a slasher for the cyber-obsessed generation we live in, knowledgeably created by the geekers that have amassed millions of YouTube views in an effort to rule the internet.
Director Michael J. Gallagher is responsible for the comedy channel “Totally Sketch,” Shane Dawson you may recognize from “Shane Dawson TV,” and Toby Turner of “The Annoying Orange” fame all provide social commentary about the 4chan viewing, meme-crazed teenagers who waste hours surfing the internet. Smiley is their techie brain-child which exploits the internet’s wicked ways, creating a slasher villain who brings “trolling” to horrific new heights. This is what happens when doing it for the “lulz” goes wrong, and when emoticons attack.
So for those lost in today’s current trend of LOLcats, memes, YouTube sensations, misspelled text, made up words, and the art of “trolling,” consider yourself far outside the intended demographic of Smiley. Stuffed with internet jokes...

There are plenty of great horror movie slashers that you know by name: Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Victor Crowley, Cropsey, Leslie Vernon. While certainly all different in appearance, they share two key commonalities: a) they all kill teenagers, and, more importantly, b) they each have a backstory. Some are chilling, some are tragic, but each of those killers has a distinct and compelling reason for doing what they do.
This is where Smiley falls short.
Sort of like a Candyman for the cyber generation, Smiley is the story of Ashley (Caitlin Gerard), a sweet, naïve girl who heads off to college after the untimely death of her mother. She moves into a house with slutty party gal Proxy (Melanie Papalia), who of...

Well take a look at that. I’m not familiar with Michael Gallagher’s YouTube work, but this image from his new movie Smiley does more than enough to pique my interest. The plot doesn’t exactly sound that original, but quality always lies in the execution. It’s fascinating how Internet stars are increasingly crossing over to work in the “legitimate” filmmaking world. Stuff like Smiley is likely a harbinger of what we can expect for the future of movie making.

This weekend Maker launched a new animation vertical, with three new animated series featuring creators Ray William Johnson, the Guiness Book of World Records holder for “most-subscribed” on the YouTube platform (over 9 Million people across three channels as of December 2011), urban Asian online comedy sensation Timothy “DeLaGhetto,” Hispanic YouTube star Pee Dee Flo, popular Youtuber comic Steve Greene and prolific online comedy director Michael Gallagher (creator of Totally Sketch and one of YouTube’s Most Subscribed of All Time). Maker’s Head of Animation is none other than South Park veteran Glasgow Phillips, who developed Animonster‘s animation shows: Your Favorite Martian...

Co-written by “South Park” alumni Glasgow Phillips, Michael Gallagher’s upcoming slasher flick “Smiley” looks lot a lot of fun. The killer’s peculiar look is reason enough for me to check it out, though I’m sure some of you may want a bit more meat to chew on. Thankfully, the first trailer for the flick has finally arrived, and we’ve gone out of our way to embed the aforementioned clip in this very article. And by out of the way, of course, I mean carefully copying and pasting the proper code from another genre-friendly website. Heh. Need another plot synopsis? Well, you’re getting one, anyway: After learning of an urban legend in which a demented serial killer named Smiley can be summoned through the Internet, mentally fragile Ashley must decide whether she is losing her mind or becoming Smiley’s next victim. When will we get...

The killer in Michael Gallagher’s upcoming slasher flick “Smiley” is pretty original, though I’m a little surprised no one has attempted something like this before. Even if the story itself is tired and mundane — which I seriously doubt, given that it was co-written by Glasgow Phillips — at least we’ll have Smiley to look at. Check out the first batch of images below. But first, here’s a quick synopsis to set the mood: After learning of an urban legend in which a demented serial killer named Smiley can be summoned through the Internet, mentally fragile Ashley must decide whether she is losing her mind or becoming Smiley’s next victim. For more information, pay a visit to the film’s official Facebook page. The rest of the images, meanwhile, have been embedded below for your endless amusement...

MTV has ordered 10 pilots in consideration for series orders for the 2004-05 season. True to form from the home of The Osbournes and Making the Band, the pilots plant celebrities -- including Cameron Diaz, Wilmer Valderrama and Frankie Muniz -- in unscripted settings. Diaz's project, known as Trippin', involves her and famous friends like Drew Barrymore traveling to faraway lands to spotlight environmental issues. Valderrama (That '70s Show) hosts a street-racing competition that gets help from professional races. Executive producers are Patrick Byrnes, Glasgow Phillips and Heather Waters. Muniz stars in Granted, in which the Malcolm in the Middle star helps viewers live out their fantasies.
