The Video Essay is a joint project of Mubi and Filmadrid International Film Festival. Film analysis and criticism found a completely new and innovative path with the arrival of the video essay, a relatively recent form that has already its own masters and is becoming increasingly popular. The limits of this discipline are constantly expanding; new essayists are finding innovative ways to study the history of cinema working with images. With this non-competitive section of the festival both Mubi and Filmadrid will offer the platform and visibility the video essay deserves. The seven selected works will be premiering online from June 7 - 13, 2021 on Mubi's Notebook. The selection was made by the programmers of Mubi and Filmadrid.L'Infinito by Miguel García OteroIn Franco Piavoli's films there is no concept of scale: the role of things is not determined by their size and the petals of a flower have the same value as the lushest grove.

Foreplays is a column that explores under-known short films by renowned directors. Franco Piavoli's Domenica sera (1962) is free to watch below.Despite having been praised by other Italian directors of his generation, such as Ermanno Olmi, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Marco Bellocchio, the fascinating filmography of Franco Piavoli (born 1933) remains something of a secret. He began directing short films in the 1950s and '60s, but it wasn't until 1982—after a long break from filmmaking—that he made his first and best known feature, The Blue Planet. Built on an ambitious superimposition of time scales, the film displays a wondrous depiction of what the director himself has called "the lost alphabet" of animal, vegetal, and human life—something that he would keep pursuing relentlessly in his later four features (all completed during the 1980s and ‘90s), and in many shorts. Often working in close collaboration with his wife, Neria Poli,...

“So one thing from another rises ever; and in fee-simple life is given to none, but unto all mere usufruct.” – Lucretius, On the Nature of Things, Book III
The above quote was once used by great Italian documentarian Franco Piavoli to open his masterful 1982 film, The Blue Planet. In that instance, it is deftly applied to the fragility of mother nature; her various granting and reclaiming of life, but can just as easily be applied to the figures followed by Roberto Minervini, an Italian based in the United States whose acclaimed Texas Trilogy – The Passage, Low Tide and Stop the Pounding Heart – was followed up at Cannes this year by The Other Side, which shifts the director’s gaze slightly eastward to the state of Louisiana. One must assume that Minervini, despite blazing his own trail that has led him through the Philippines and Spain en route to America’s Southern states,...
