It’s fitting that Grant Singer opens Reptile, his meandering feature directorial debut, with an “Angel of the Morning” needle drop. Chip Taylor composed that aching tune about a one-night stand because he wanted to capture a passionate and ephemeral feeling. “It was beyond words,” he has said of the 1967 song. “And that is the power.”
Singer, like Taylor, reaches for the ineffable. The director, who’s helmed music videos for pop music royalty up until this point, is obsessed with controlling atmosphere and setting the mood. He crowds Reptile with gripping sequences, suspenseful moments, dramatic pauses and surprising levity — elements that, despite their overuse, keep the audience on edge and strategically blur the lines between dreams and reality. A malevolent score by Berlin-based composer Yair Elazar Glotman, with an assist from Venezuelan musician Arca, helps calibrate this tension and adds to the movie’s overall mysterious air.

Mel Brooks' 1974 Western "Blazing Saddles" takes place in a town called Rockridge, a peaceful and very, very racist berg out on the edge of the Western frontier. The citizens, as described by Jim (Gene Wilder), are the common clay of the New West. "You know," he adds, "morons." In a cute gag, the citizens are named Olson Johnson, Howard Johnson, Harriett Johnson, Gabby Johnson, the Reverend Johnson, and Anal Johnson. On one hand, the similar surnames could just be an absurdist gag from a writer who opted to plug in generic names for the characters rather than invent new ones for each. On the other, it could have been Brooks making a cute joke about how literally incestuous Rockridge was. Are relatives marrying and having kids? It sure looks that way. This author prefers the second interpretation.
Flash forward 13 years later, Brooks wrote and directed "Spaceballs," a spoof of the "Star Wars" movies.

The SAG-AFTRA local in Atlanta is offering its members an election do-over: If they’ve already cast their ballots for board candidates, they can vote again for different candidates.
The unusual move comes after the local’s ruling faction, Union Strong Atlanta (USA), received an unfair and potentially illegal advantage from a local talent agency and from an acting workshop, which had posted campaign materials and promoted the Union Strong slate on their Facebook pages.
Prior to ballots being mailed last month, SAG-aftra’s national election committee informed employers and agents that “federal law prohibits any employer, including employers who are agents, managers, casting directors or producers, from contributing anything of value to candidates for any SAG-aftra elected office. If there is a Department of Labor investigation, the Dol may seek to take statements from candidates and any employers who contributed to them. Further, any such contributions may...

Hey guys, remember that romantic thriller Safe Haven with Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough in the leading roles? Yeah, I’m sure you do, after all, it’s an upcoming adaptation of Nicholas Sparks‘s novel of the same name and opens on Valentine’s Day, so – yes, it’s time for us to get romantic and check out another great video from the whole thing!
Directed by Lasse Hallström, the movie will teach us that in the darkest hour, love is the only light that shines there in… the dark…or something like that. An affirming and suspenseful story about a young woman’s struggle to love again description will work out just fine, right?
Anyway, beside the above mentioned duo, Safe Haven also stars Cobie Smulders, David Lyons, Scott Porter, Cullen Moss and Mike Pniewski, and as I said, the movie comes to theaters on February 14th, 2013.

You know it when you find it… Well, if Josh Duhamel says this is an exclusive trailer for his upcoming rom-com titled Safe Haven, maybe we should give him a try. Lasse Hallström stands behind this drama which is already being described as an affirming and suspenseful story about a young woman’s struggle to love again. And that, my friends, is not a huge surprise, ’cause the whole thing is actually based on Nicholas Sparks‘ novel of the same name. Yeah, something like The Notebook meets Dear John, or whatever…
Hallström directs the movie from a script written by Dana Stevens, which centers on a mysterious young woman named Katie, who arrives in a small North Carolina town. That woman is, you already guess – Julianne Hough. She is determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into reluctant relationships.
Slowly, she gains the courage...

Justice UK Trailer. Roger Donaldson‘s Justice (2011) UK movie trailer stars Nicolas Cage, January Jones, Guy Pearce, Jennifer Carpenter, and Harold Perrineau. Justice‘s – previously called Seeking Justice and The Hungry Rabbit Jumps – plot synopsis: “After his wife is assaulted, a husband enlists the services of a vigilante group to help him settle the score. The husband gets more than he bargained for.”
This looked like an average thriller until the group comes calling for their favor to be re-paid by Nick Gerard (Nicolas Cage) and he is disinclined to acquiesce to their demands. I also liked the fact that Gerard virtually has nowhere to turn for help because the group is made up of the very people he would go to.
Justice also stars Xander Berkeley, Monica Acosta, D’Arcy Allen, David Jensen, IronE Singleton, Joe Chrest, Mike Pniewski, Wayne Pére, Donna Duplantier, Melody Noel, and Jason Davis.

iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove is all grown up, and she'll be appearing on a brand new episode of The Good Wife on November 16. A few weeks ago CBS released promo photos of Miranda's upcoming guest appearance on The Good Wife (and we posted them here). Now, the network has released a trailer which showcases a few scenes from the episode.
Despite the fact that there seem to be a few cheesy lines in the trailer below (something The Good Wife doesn't usually fall prey to that often), I think this will be a great episode and will hopefully showcase Miranda's dramatic acting talents. Based on the list of guest stars, it also looks like we might be seeing more of Peter and his political story this week.

SAG and AFTRA announced yesterday that their combined paid-up membership, about 132,000 members, overwhelmingly ratified the contracts between the unions and the advertising industry. The result was expected, as there was no organized opposition. About 28% returned their ballots, about typical. Of those voting, about 94% voted yes. The deals expire March 31, 2012.
The news from the TV/theatrical side is nowhere near as placid. The ballots went out a few days ago—they’re due back June 9—and SAG’s conducting a series of town hall meetings across the country. The first was last night in Hollywood, and the fur flew. About 600 people attended according to a staff count; although the crowd was reportedly 70% composed of hardline Membership First partisans, they didn’t manage to fill the room. That’s a bit surprising. I’d expected an overflow crowd, given their (apparent?) strength in Hollywood.

Most of us will face the challenge of taking care of loved ones at some point in our lives -- whether raising children or caring for a sick or elderly relative. For actors, that can often mean having to take a sabbatical from auditions and acting. While the choice can be difficult, it is rarely regretted, as we do what we have to for those we love most. Back Stage spoke with four actors from around the country who made that choice and are back to pursuing their craft. In 2000, Anne-Marie Johnson had the good fortune to be playing a recurring role on the CBS series Jag when her mother, Ann Clay Johnson, became critically ill. After five seasons on the show, Johnson left to tend to her mom, who required round-the-clock care -- eight and a half months at the hospital and another 36 months at home, where Johnson was trained to assist four caregivers.

The SAG board’s moderate majority fired National Executive Director Doug Allen today by using a document signed by board members and called a “written assent.” Much to my surprise, Allen chose not to fight and instead emailed the SAG staff acknowledging that he had been terminated and saying goodbye. A copy of the email is below.
Perhaps one reason Allen agreed so readily is that—as has not previously been reported—the assent provides that his contract will be paid out in full. The assent itself has not previously been released. However, I’ve received a copy. See below.
A natural question is how the process unfolded. I spoke to two sources close to the situation who laid out the following narrative:
At around 11:00 a.m. Monday morning, a group of board members went to SAG’s La headquarters. The group included Unite for Strength leader Ned Vaughn,...
