NBC’s Law & Order franchise will open the 2022-23 by doing something it has never done in its long history.
All three shows in the brand — the original L&o, Svu and Organized Crime — will come together for a single story spanning their season premieres on Sept. 22. It’s a first for Law & Order but not for executive producer Dick Wolf, whose teams have pulled off similar three-show events on NBC’s Chicago dramas and CBS’ FBI franchise.
Law & Order showrunner Rick Eid and Chicago Pd’s Gwen Sigan wrote the feature-length telecast. Franchise veteran Jean de Segonzac directs the first two hours; Alex Hall helms the third.
“Nothing demonstrates the power of the Law & Order brand more than an ambitious three-hour event with a story that is truly ripped from the headlines that starts on Organized Crime, then...

Don’t worry; this message will not self-destruct. Tom Cruise is flying high following the box office haul of Top Gun: Maverick this summer. And next year, Cruise will look to unseat his now highest domestic earner with the next installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. While Top Gun: Maverick was a triumphant return to mega-star status, cashing in on the legacy sequel trend with a lean, effective script and dazzling practical stunts, it can be argued that Cruise’s recent M:i films laid the groundwork with audiences.
It’s easy to forget, but the mid-2000s were a lean period for Cruise’s stardom. The actor’s involvement with Scientology and subsequent bizarre media appearances led to the end of a 14-year relationship between Cruise and Paramount Pictures. Underwhelming box office performances for Cruise-led films like Lions for Lambs, Valkyrie, and Knight and...

“Law & Order” has been renewed for Season 22 and “Law & Order: Organized Crime” for Season 3, NBC announced on Tuesday.
The original “mothership” series returned from a 12-year-hiatus for its 21st season this year, with Sam Waterston and Anthony Anderson reprising their roles as D.A. Jack McCoy and Detective Kevin Bernard, respectively. The revived series also stars Jeffrey Donovan, Camryn Manheim, Hugh Dancy and Odelya Halevi.
Christopher Meloni’s “Organized Crime’ spinoff, which launched in April 2021, brought back the actor as fan-favorite Elliot Stabler. This season saw multiple crossovers with “Law & Order: Svu,” and a tense storyline in which Stabler faces off with mobster Richard Wheatley (Dylan McDermott) and begins to suspect his partner Frank Donnelly (Denis Leary) isn’t on the up and up. The series co-stars Danielle Moné Truitt, Ainsley Seiger and Nona Parker Johnson.

She is being replaced by Barry O’Brien, who will serve as showrunner for the remainder of the series’ second season. He joined Organized Crime as co-executive producer in November.
“Ilene did a terrific job launching the series and is a gifted writer,” Wolf said. “She leaves the show in good hands and we are incredibly grateful for her contributions.”
The showrunner change is not impacting production on Law & Order: Organized Crime, which has five more episodes to film from its current second season.

Due to its persistent on-screen presence, the swimming pool can be taken for granted; but beneath the surface it is cinema’s Jungian friend, representing secrets lying underneath. It exudes glamour and danger, shifting beyond conscious realms. It is a key to transformation, coming of age tales and renewed relationships. It is a status symbol and whether or not the pool is intact says a lot about the mood of the film and the state of its characters. Away from states of intensity, the swimming pool emerges on screen as a signifier of a time to unwind and to forget life past the poolside. The films featured in this mix show how the pool alludes mysterious symbolism and sexual awakening; murder, lust, and love brush shoulders as sun kissed babes in bikinis whisper sweet truths or uncover deadly secrets (such as the strange swimming pool activities in Three Women or...

Three different premieres led the specialty box office this weekend with each film breaking a 100K weekend gross.
First, Focus Features’ Final Account splashed in at $150K this opening weekend. Over a decade in the making, the timely documentary offers a portrait of the last living generation of everyday people to participate in Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich. The Luke Holland-directed film raises questions about authority, conformity, complicity, perpetration, national identity, and responsibility, as men and women ranging from former SS members to civilians in never-before-seen interviews reckon with – in very different ways – their memories, perceptions, and personal appraisals of their own roles in the greatest human crimes in history.
Final Account was well-received by critics and minted $488 per screen at 308 locations.

Aaron Falk (Eric Bana) wasn’t ever planning on coming back. Leaving wasn’t his choice, but at a certain point the present replaces the past. Hearing that his best friend from high school killed his wife and son before turning the gun on himself wasn’t therefore going to change his mind. If anything, knowing that truth and the fact that Luke was gone might have been the final nail as far as never returning at all. But that’s when the card came with a cryptic message more or less blackmailing Aaron into attending the funeral. It was sent by Luke’s father and stated that he knew they lied twenty years ago. What was the lie? We don’t yet know. Whatever it was, though, it worked. Aaron was heading home.

The barren earth surrounding a drought-stricken Aussie town provides fertile ground for mystery, suspense and punchy emotional drama in “The Dry.” This enthralling adaptation of Jane Harper’s international bestseller stars a spot-on Eric Bana as a city detective whose investigation of an apparent murder-suicide in his hometown triggers renewed suspicion about his involvement in a mysterious death that’s haunted the community for two decades. Expertly directed and co-written by respected filmmaker Robert Connolly, “The Dry” has all the character intrigue, clever plot twists and red herrings to keep viewers guessing. It should become a sizeable summer hit when released in local cinemas on Jan. 1. Broad international streaming exposure is assured.
Headlining his first Aussie feature since 2007’s “Romulus, My Father,” Bana is perfectly cast as Federal Agent Aaron Falk. A dedicated detective based in Melbourne, Aaron hasn’t set foot in hometown Kiewarra since departing abruptly following the...

When Falk reluctantly agrees to stay and investigate the crime, he opens up an old wound – the death of 17-year-old Ellie Deacon. Falk begins to suspect these two crimes, separated by decades, are connected.
The film is based on the Jane Harper novel of the same name, adapted by Connolly and Harry Cripps.

Eric Bana in ‘The Dry.’
Roadshow will launch Robert Connolly’s The Dry on January 1 and Glendyn Ivin’s Penguin Bloom on January 21, raising exhibitors’ hopes of a strong start to the year on the proviso that a raft of Hollywood titles are not postponed.
Seeing gaps in the market, Roadshow moved up Connolly’s crime thriller adapted from the Jane Harper novel, starring Eric Bana, Genevieve O’Reilly, Keir O’Donnell and John Polson, from April.
The distributor shifted Ivin’s drama starring Naomi Watts, Andrew Lincoln and Jacki Weaver, adapted from Bradley Trevor Greive and Cameron Bloom’s novel, which had been scheduled for New Year’s Day, to the Australia Day long weekend.
“The Dry is a great addition for Roadshow,” says Wallis Cinema’s Bob Parr, adding that it would be a disaster for cinemas if more Hollywood tentpoles such as Warner Bros’ Wonder Woman 1984 and Universal’s...

Robert Connolly.
In the 25 years since he graduated from the Australian Film Television and Radio School Robert Connolly has never been more excited about the future of the film industry.
Reflecting his boundless optimism, his company Arenamedia’s production and development slate is the biggest and most ambitious in its 15-year history.
“The future path for us is having many and varied collaborations and partnerships and not trying to be proprietorial,” Connolly tells If.
“Our creative team are backing our love and passion for cinema, without disparaging in any way this amazing era we’re in with television.
“We’re excited by the future of cinema. We think there will be innovation and new ways of watching cinema.”

‘H is for Happiness.’
For producer, director, writer and distributor Robert Connolly, the clear challenge for Australian filmmakers is to create cinema works that speak to the issues the world is facing.
For writer-director Kiah Roache-Turner and his producer brother Tristan Roache-Turner, the solution to the declining indie market lies partly in developing multiple projects with various producers.
Coupled with that is the brothers’ willingness to spend hundreds of hours working with distributors to sell each film and push for more screens.
Producer Julie Ryan laments the increasing trend by some government agencies to encourage producers to pitch feature projects to streaming services rather than via the traditional sales agent/distributor model.
“I am not against having my film released on a streaming service but there isn’t any incentive for them to invest upfront and replace the market funds that were traditionally covered by the sales agent advance and Australia-New Zealand distribution guarantee,...

Lupita Nyong’o in ‘Little Monsters’ (Photo credit: Ben King)
Universal Pictures has won a bidding war for a sci–fi action comedy from writer-director Abe Forsythe and Made Up Stories which will star Lupita Nyong’o — the creative team behind Little Monsters.
Miss Universe is described as a cross between Men In Black and Miss Congeniality, according to Deadline which broke the story.
Nyong’o will produce with Made Up Stories’ Bruna Papandrea, Jodi Matterson and Steve Hutensky. Emil Stern, Sigmund Stern and Jeanne Snow will be executive producers.
The project germinated while Forsythe was in post on Little Monsters, for which Universal acquired the Australian rights.
“It’s a female-driven, very high concept sci-fi action comedy,” Matterson tells If. The plan is to begin production next year, hopefully in Australia.
“We were thrilled with the responses (from the Us studios) to Miss Universe,” Jodi says. “Little Monsters proved what Abe is capable of.

Damon Herriman accepting his Australians in Film award (Photo credit: Mac1Photography).
These are heady times for Damon Herriman, who has just scored his fifth Aacta nomination after winning the Qantas Orry-Kelly Award from Australians in Film and wrapping a film with Quentin Tarantino, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie.
Not bad for an actor who doubted when he first went to Hollywood in 2000 that he would ever get a job there but didn’t want to live with the regret of not having a crack.
Herriman is typically modest about the latest accolades. When he decided to ‘postpone’ the short film festival last year its founder didn’t believe it would come back. Now, he says, ‘We have to re-prove ourselves’
When the Tropfest founder, John Polson, was 15, a mixed bag of juvenile delinquencies saw him booted out of high school for a second time.
It could so easily have proven disastrous but Polson responded by hurriedly mapping out a plan to start a mechanic apprenticeship and learn the saxophone, hoping that would temper the anger of his jazz musician father.

Tropfest is moving to Parramatta, with the 25th event to be held at Parramatta Park on February 11 next year.
Speaking from the U.S. set of Elementary, John Polson said: .After extensive research and soul-searching, as well as looking to international festivals such as Sundance and Cannes for inspiration, we've recognised our desire to have a destination we could fully embrace and call our own. Tropfest needed a fresh base where it can be nurtured, expand, and eventually become a multi event festival. Moving Tropfest to Parramatta also puts us firmly in the geographical heart of Sydney, which is the perfect place for the world.s most exciting and accessible film event."
"The City of Parramatta and Parramatta Park Trust have already demonstrated they are 100 percent behind helping us ensure Tropfest at Parramatta is a success. Having such vested partners...

Simone Ball.
On Sunday night, almost 100,000 Sydneysiders flocked to Centennial Park to enjoy Tropfest, the largest short-film festival in the world, renowned for showcasing and celebrating Australia.s emerging film talent. Emerging male talent, anyway..
This year.s films included stories of an Australian ex-boxer battling the bottle, unlikely Taylor Swift fans, identical twins, and a best friend with a dangerous secret. There were comedies, documentaries and animations. The films were diverse in story, but sadly not in gender..
For me - as an actor, a female, an advocate for equality and for the Australian film and television industry - it was this imbalance that stole the show..
Of the sixteen finalists, only one was female. As for female talent featured in the films, if you blinked you might have missed her..
As Simon Baker said as he presented the award for best female actor to Natalie Bassingthwaighte for her...
