The year was 1992. Not yet a multibillion-dollar industry, hip-hop was still considered an emerging cultural movement hailing from New York City's most disenfranchised borough: the Bronx. However, it had spread across the East and West coasts and specific pockets of the US, speaking intimately to Black and brown communities as both an outlet to address socioeconomic issues and a form of entertainment provided by rappers, DJs, dancers, and visual artists.

While mainstream magazines like Billboard and Rolling Stone were in no rush to prominently feature hip-hop acts, publications such as Right On!, Word Up!, and Hip-Hop Connection centered them, filling a growing void in print media. The rap-centered Source would later enter the media landscape in 1991, too. But there was one magazine that was prematurely underestimated yet paved the way for hip-hop culture to prominently sit on newsstands.

On The Real World Homecoming: New York, the original cast members of the landmark MTV series reunite in the same loft where they filmed in 1992 to reflect on how it changed their lives, and the enduring resonance of the issues it brought to light.
Created by the late Mary-Ellis Bunim and Jonathan Murray, with George Verschoor producing and directing, The Real World was conceived as a social experiment, which would bring seven strangers from totally different backgrounds together to see if they could find common ground. Credited with birthing the reality television genre, which has exploded in the decades since its premiere, the series’ original cast members included Heather B. Gardner and Kevin Powell.
At Deadline’s virtual Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted event, Murray, Verschoor, Gardner and Powell discussed their experience revisiting The Real World, and what it feels like to be associated with the show all these years later.

The first half of the premiere episode of Paramount+’s highly anticipated “The Real World” reunion was dedicated to the original cast members reuniting for the first time in nearly 30 years, a largely cheerful segment punctuated by the refrain, “Where’s Eric?”
Turns out that Eric Nies, one of the first season’s biggest stars, wasn’t able to move into the New York City loft with the other cast members because he tested positive for Covid-19. Instead, Nies had to isolate in a separate New York hotel and call in via video chat.
“When Eric popped on the monitor, I knew,” his castmate Andre Comeau said in the episode. “These are the times of Covid, so yeah, I added two plus two pretty quickly.”
Fans likely had the same reaction after the news that Eric wasn’t able to participate in the reunion in person was first reported by the New York Times.

Seven years ago, Rolling Stone interviewed Real World co-creator Jonathan Murray about the newest season of the groundbreaking MTV reality show. At the end, we ran an idea past him: “[Thinking] back to that original cast in New York, it would be nice to see something with them again. Maybe put them all back into a loft for a week.”
He was a little skeptical. “I don’t know doing it that way is best, and I’m not sure they’d be willing to do it,” he said at the time.

Paramount+’s upcoming “Real World” reunion series will bring the entire original cast to the same New York City loft they shared in 1992 — with one major exception.
Eric Nies, one of the MTV reality show’s seven original stars, was forced to stay in a hotel room apart from the other housemates and video call in for the duration of filming, he told the The New York Times. Nies said he couldn’t explain why he wasn’t able to live with the rest of the cast, saying only that it was “definitely not by my choice.”
The six other original cast members — Becky Blasband, Andre Comeau, Heather B. Gardner, Julie Gentry, Norman Korpi and Kevin Powell — were all reunited in person at the SoHo loft where their original season was set.

For all the digital ink spilled over Kevin Powell's claims over All Eyez on Me, the lawsuit is in danger of failing from the get-go thanks to basic lapse.
Powell, a prominent journalist and activist, alleges the Tupac Shakur biopic infringes upon several of his articles for Vibe magazine published in the 1990s. 2017-06-25T12:47:09-07:00Writer Sues 'All Eyez On Me' CreatorsA magazine writer has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the creators of the new Tupac Shakur biopic, saying that portions of the film are based on his articles about the late rapper.
Kevin Powell says in the federal lawsuit filed Friday that “All Eyez On Me” borrows from articles he wrote and interviews he did with Shakur in the 1990s for Vibe magazine.
The lawsuit says, for instance, the film’s fictional character Nigel is based on a character Powell wrote about in one of his magazine articles. The suit says the character is based on Jacques “Haitian Jack” Agnant.
“There are stories with fictional characters and re-worked narratives that are unique to the Original Work that appear in the Infringing Work,” the suit said. “Rather than contact Plaintiff, Defendants, while fully aware of...

The list of people who aren’t happy with “All Eyez on Me” continues to grow. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a journalist by the name of Kevin Powell is going even further than Jada Pinkett Smith and 50 Cent, as he’s actually filed a copyright lawsuit alleging that the Tupac Shakur biopic lifted “fictional characters and re-worked narratives” from a series of Vibe interviews he conducted with the slain rapper.

“While some of the content in these articles was factual,” reads the filing, “some portions of the article were changed or embellished by Plaintiff.” That’s crucial to Powell’s case, because if “All Eyez on Me” did in fact use his interviews — especially the parts that deviate from fact — then it essentially adapted his work without crediting him.

Jada Pinkett Smith isn’t the only one who isn’t thrilled about the new Tupac Shakur biopic “All Eyez on Me.” Lionsgate, Morgan Creek Productions and others have been slapped with a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by Kevin Powell, who alleges that the film infringes on a series of articles he wrote about Shakur for Vibe magazine in the 1990s. The suit cites a June interview given by “All Eyez on Me” producer L.T. Hutton, in which Hutton allegedly stated that “all of the interviews” of Tupac Shakur were used to make the film. Journalists are supposed to be factual. Then again, copyright law doesn't protect the naked recitation of historical facts. Alas, a quandry showcased in a new lawsuit against Lionsgate, Morgan Creek and others associated with All Eyez on Me, the biopic about the late rapper, Tupac Shakur.
In a complaint filed on Friday in New York federal court, Kevin Powell claims the movie infringes upon several of his articles for Vibe Magazine published in the 1990s. But again, if Shakur's life events are in the public domain, how does a journalist possibly get around copyright limitations to sue filmmakers who tread similar...

Just one week after it opened, the Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez On Me is causing a stir far from the box office. Deadline reports that the movie’s writers and producers, including Lionsgate, are being sued by veteran music journalist Kevin Powell for infringement. Powell, who’s written extensively for Vibe, claims there are “significant portions of the film is based on interviews he did” with the iconic rapper years ago. After seeing the film a couple of times, Powell says “it is clear that my exclusive Vibe cover stories on Tupac Shakur (when he was alive), were lifted, without proper credit or compensation of any kind to me” for use in the film directed by Benny Boom, and written by Jeremy Haft, Eddie Gonzalez, and Steven Bagatourian.

Once upon a time, 19 years ago, in a faraway land south of Houston Street in Manhattan, seven strangers were brought together in a fancy loft to have their lives taped "to find out what happens when people stop being polite, and start getting real." Coming from disparate backgrounds, these seven young adults examined issues such as race, sexual orientation and other social and cultural differences. The inaugural Real World, Real World: New York, aired in 1992, the year of the Los Angeles Riots, and racial tensions bubbled to the surface in the Real World house, culminating in a heated confrontation between African American cast member Kevin Powell and white southerner Julie Gentry.
Arguably the most memorable season in Real World history was Season 3: Real World San Francisco. HIV positive Pedro Zamora, who had already testified about HIV education before Congress, joined the cast, bringing awareness about HIV and AIDS to a national audience.

Film and TV stars have often tried to make the leap to the political stage.
But this year, two men who appeared on MTV's "Real World" in the past are running for political seats in New York and Wisconsin.
"I think it is great preparation for someone who wants to be in government and who wants to represent all the people in the district," "Real World" co-creator and producer Jonathan Murray told The Daily Beast about why their TV past may help them.
In Brooklyn's 10th District, Democrat Kevin Powell (who was on the MTV reality show's first season in NYC in 1992) is running against incumbent Edolphus Towns, while Sean Duffy (a "Real World" Boston 1997 alumn before he appeared on "Road Rules: All Stars" and later had stints on Espn) is a Republican candidate -- backed by Sarah Palin -- in Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District.
