Ever since Rocky took the world by storm in 1976, people have been enamored with the idea of an underdog fighting his way to victory. There is something about two people entering an arena and just seeing who is the best. Movies help us find the themes and metaphors we can use for this mentality in our everyday life. If you’re in a funk and then play the Rocky theme, you suddenly become more motivated than ever to get over that mountain called life. With Creed IV reportedly in the works, we figured this would be a great time to put together a list of the best fighting movies other than Rocky.

Throwback martial arts action film The Last Kumite heads to streaming in 2024, and here’s the trailer.
There is no question that the 1980s was a vintage time for action films, particularly in Hong Kong. There was a fruitful period in the mid 1980s when Hong Kong directors would hire American martial artists to go toe to toe with onscreen, both to broaden the international appeal and show a wide range of styles.
From Cynthia Rothrock going up against Sammo Hung in Shanghai Express to Richard Norton’s multiple bust ups with Jackie Chan in the likes of City Hunter and Mr Nice Guy, these performers went on to headline a series of low budget American action films that have since gained a cult following, perhaps most notably the China O’Brien series and the numerous No Retreat, No Surrender sequels

"It's time!" Capelight Pictures has unveiled a first look teaser for an upcoming 80s / 90s throwback movie called The Last Kumite, directed by filmmaker Ross W. Clarkson. This indie project has been funded on both Kickstarter and Indiegogo, being readied for release in 2024. It's going direct-to-vod in the spring. The Last Kumite is a new spin on the great martial arts films of the 80s & 90s that are still loved amongst action film fans as much today as they were decades ago. The filmmakers describe it as "a new take on the tournament movie inspired by the likes of Bloodsport, Kickboxer and No Retreat No Surrender." Following a martial arts fighter who discovers other martial artists have also been "forced to fight to save their loved ones." Starring newcomer Mathis Landwehr as Michael in the lead role, with a massive throwback cast including Cynthia Rothrock, Michel Qissi, Matthias Hues, Richard Norton,...

Albert Pyun was a beloved B-movie filmmaker who brought audiences a total of 52 films as a director and who recently passed away leaving two upcoming films seemingly unfinished. Looking at his career, the man knew how to create interesting and entertaining films to say the least. His first release was the 1982 film The Sword and the Sorcerer and his newest was the 2018 film Death Heads: Brain Dead. The man seemed unstoppable, and he will be very missed. To celebrate the man and his work, here are 5 of our favorite films from the Pyuniverse.
The Sword and The Sorcerer (1982)
Pyun’s first film as a director, which he co-wrote with Tom Karnowski and John V. Stuckmeyer, The Sword and the Sorcerer is a medieval-esque epic film with magic, sword, babes, and a whole lot more. There’s a ton on here and the film goes in a few different directions, not...

Exclusive: In a hot package for EFM buyers this weekend, Jean-Claude Van Damme will star in What’s My Name? Directed by Jeremy Zag, the film will be produced by Cross Creek’s Tyler Thompson alongside Asko Akopyan, Zag and Van Damme. Executive Producer is John Soibatian. Cross Creek is fully financing a film that will reunite the fighting icon in matches against some of his past screen rivals.
Van Damme tells Deadline that What’s My Name? will dip into his cinematic and personal life — as did the 2008 film Jcvd — and that it will bring to an end his long career as an action film fighter. Oscar-winning Green Book scribe Nick Vallelonga and Paul Sloan (Stilleto) wrote the script, based on a story by Van Damme. Wild Bunch International is handling foreign sales, and CAA Media Finance is representing the film’s domestic distribution rights.
In the film, Van Damme will play himself.

How much you’re likely to enjoy Kickboxer: Vengeance will be dependent on two main factors - how heavily you were invested in, or even loved, the glorious heyday of westernised martial arts action movies released in the 80s and how much you still love them. Since the new Kickboxer has already seen its release Stateside there’s a swarm of reviews that seem content to rubbish it, as is often the trend with action cinema, based on the notion that the original Kickboxer, and all movies of its kind, are disposable and worthless.
If, however, you happened to be a teenager when Jean Claude Van Damme’s star was on the rise, maybe taking up a martial art to emulate your hero, perhaps even drawing pictures of him on your text books at school, then his films were anything but throwaway.

Back in the '80s, I use to love those action-packed martial arts films that created icons out of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Sho Kosugi, and Jean-Claude Van Damme. One of the films that I remembered back in the days was Kickboxer, which starred a young Jean-Claude Van Damme, and was surprised that they would be making a remake of the film tilted Kickboxer: Vengeance, which would feature the return of Jcvd to the franchise.
Kickboxer: Vengeance stars martial artist and stuntman Alain Moussi, and he has some big shoes to fill as he is playing the role that once belonged to Jcvd. An update to the 1989 classic film Kickboxer, Kickboxer: Vengeance follows the story of Kurt Sloane (Alain Moussi), who travels to Thailand to avenge the death of his brother at the hands of Tong Po (Dave Bautista). Kurt trains with the legendary Master Durand (Jean-Claude Van Damme) until...

When looking at eighties action heroes Jean-Claude Van Damme managed to make a name for himself in a genre built upon already big names and even bigger egos. Although A.W.O.L. (aka Lionheart) was released in 1990 I think it is fair to still class it as an eighties movie, the fashions shown on-screen pretty much confirm it (they are bad). Released this week on Blu-ray as part of 101 Films Cult Movie Collection it stands as a perfect example of everything that made Van Damme a star of the action genre.

In 1986, Jean-Claude Van Damme was the title alien in Predator before he was hurriedly recast. Ryan looks back at what happened...
In the mid-1980s, Belgian martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme arrived in America with dreams of stardom. Possessing a finely-honed physique, thanks to years of training in (among other things) karate, kickboxing and ballet, he was ambitious and brimming with self-belief.
The acting bug bit Van Damme while he was still in his teens: he played “a bad guy with all the knives” in the 1984 French gangster movie Rue Barbare and, determined to further his goal of becoming an actor, hopped on a plane to Los Angeles. His first few years in America were, however, tough. He slept in a rental car for two weeks, and made money by teaching aerobics and martial arts, delivering pizzas, and working as a doorman at a restaurant belonging to Chuck Norris.

When i first heard the news that Kickboxer was to be remade, i wasn’t very happy. The original movie starred a younger Jean Claude Van Damme and has a cult following around the world, but do hollywood really need to reboot it?
The latest version will star Alain Moussi as the lead role, Ufc champion George St. Pierre and the villain Tong Po will be played by wrestler Bautista. But now we are hearing that Martial Arts icon Tony Jaa will play the role of Alain Moussi’s trainer and also Scott Adkins. The movie will be directed by Stephen Fung (Tai Chi Zero) and be released sometime in 2015.
The original 1989 version had Van Damme showcasing some excellent skills, the villain of Tong Po was perfectly cast with Michel Qissi doing a terrific job. They are some great training sequences in the original and lots of fight scenes throughout,...
