The upcoming DC Studios animated TV series "Creature Commandos", is based on DC Comics' monstrous team of military superhumans, originally set during World War II, including a human team leader, a werewolf, a vampire, Frankenstein's monster and a snake-headed ‘Gorgon’, streaming in 2024 on Max:
Original Team:
'Warren Griffith' – a simple, farm boy who suffered from clinical 'lycanthropy'. 'Project M' gave him the ability to change into a true werewolf, but the metamorphoses were erratic and uncontrollable due to a flaw in the serum that created him.
'J.A.K.E.'– The first 'G.I. Robot', destroyed itself along with a lost 'Atlantean' colony.
'J.A.K.E. 2' – The second 'G.I. Robot', became lost in space.
'Dr. Myrra Rhodes', aka 'Dr. Medusa', after inhaling strange fumes, grew living snakes for hair and superficially resembled Medusa, one of the 'Gorgons'.
'Lt. Matthew Shrieve – Matthew was their team leader.

Deadline hears that the deal was for mid-six against seven figures. 21 Laps brought the project in to Netflix, and Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine are set to produce for the company, with Moera Ainai overseeing. Ketai will serve as executive producer.
Netflix declined comment.
Described as an erotic thriller with a supernatural twist, Undying follows a woman, suffocated by motherhood, who has an affair with a man she hasn’t seen since high school… only to discover a terrifying secret.

Directing films is hard enough in itself, but getting films made at all is another story. "Development Hell" is unfortunately a very real place and many people grow frustrated and disillusioned with the process, often leaving the industry altogether. Spending all of your time and energy on something that's this risky, with the added potential to ruin you financially and in other ways, is just not feasible or advisable. This year we've seen several directors take their ideas to another medium. Richard Raaphorst finally released his apocalyptic zombie epos Worst Case Scenario, but as a graphic novel, not as a film. Anna Biller published her first novel this year: Bluebeard's Castle. And now we get Simon Rumley's The Wobble Club, which is indeed not a...

From historically accurate costumes to expensive set designs, it takes a lot of money to shoot a believable period piece, with these films requiring an additional level of planning in order to feel true to life. That’s why it’s so rare to see non-blockbuster productions take on this challenge – especially when it comes to monster movies.
That being said, there are still some brave genre filmmakers that try and experiment with different story settings without the benefit of a super-hero movie budget, which often leads to incredibly unique horror films. That’s why we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six of the best period-piece monster movies, as creature features shouldn’t have to be limited to any particular era.
For the purposes of this list, we’ll be defining “period piece” as any movie that takes place in a time period previous to when it was filmed.

Reminiscent of the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse with its throwback features and faux trailers for non-existent movies, filmmaker and artist Pat Tremblay’s new book Terror in the Ailien Realms: Transdimensional Horror Movie Posters & Their Film Reviews consists of posters for and reviews of movies that have never existed!
An explanation of what this book is all about was provided in a press release (via Variety), “Drawn by the deep nostalgia of roaming video rental stores to find cool movies to watch by judging what its VHS box’s artwork would entice or beguile, filmmaker & artist Pat Tremblay has created a series of horror movie posters with the assistance of AI. Earlier this month, Sony Pictures and 21 Laps – the production company behind the hit Netflix series Stranger Things – came out the winners in a competitive bidding situation over the feature film rights to the horror short film Gnomes, which was directed by Ruwan Suresh Heggelman from a script he crafted with Jasper ten Hoor and Richard Raaphorst. Heggelman will be directing the feature, but Deadline reports that Sony and 21 Laps have hired an established Hollywood screenwriting duo to write the script this time around. Those writers are Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari, whose previous credits include Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp and the Hulu thriller No Exit. Barrer also wrote the 2013 horror film Haunt, on which Ferrari served as an executive producer.
In addition to co-writing the script for the short version of Gnomes, Raaphorst also produced the film. He’s on board to produce the feature version alongside 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy,...

From Dutch filmmakers Richard Raaphorst and Ruwan Heggelman, Sony Pictures is turning the short film Gnomes into a feature, and Deadline provides a big update on the project.
Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari (Ant-Man and the Wasp) will script the feature film adaptation for Sony Pictures, Deadline reports, with 21 Laps (“Stranger Things”) producing.
Deadline details, “the original film watches as a girl stumbled into the territory of a killer gnome tribe while out on her daily run, finding herself in grave danger after being lured in by its mysterious glowing mushrooms.”
21 Laps’ Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine will produce the feature take, with Emily Feher overseeing the project for the company. Raaphorst is also on board as a producer.
Stay tuned for more on Gnomes as we learn it.

Exclusive: Over the last year, director and VFX artist Kane Parsons has shot his YouTube following into the stratosphere with the viral success of his mysterious short, “The Backrooms (Found Footage).” It’s the first in a series of found-footage horror videos which have thus far garnered nearly 100 million views and will now be adapted for the big screen by A24, Atomic Monster, Chernin Entertainment and 21 Laps.
Parsons — who’s just 17 years old — will direct from a script by Roberto Patino (Dmz). He’ll just have to wait till his summer vacation.

It's been a while since we had news of a new feature film by Dutch director Richard Raaphorst, known by most for Frankenstein's Army, which was released almost ten years ago. That doesn't mean he's been silent: he co-founded the Mad Scientists, a movement for multi-disciplinary artists, one branch of which has consistently been providing Richard's excellent design-work and special effects in many projects in the last few years. Those creepy masks and faces you saw in the trailer for Brandon Cronenberg's upcoming film Infinity Pool? Those were Richard's work. And that's not the end of the collaboration between these two it seems, as Brandon Cronenberg is on board as an executive producer for Richard Raaphorst's new feature project, a science fiction drama called Super...

For some time, Dutch director Ruwan Heggelman and producer Richard Raaphorst (director of Frankenstein's Army) have been working on several projects, but one of the funniest of these must be their gory short Gnomes. In it, a runner on her morning walk (played by Moïse Trustfull) takes a different route through the forest for a change, unaware that she enters the territory of a very aggressive tribe of minute fairy tale creatures... and they have plans with her. Featuring a wide selection of practical effects and puppetry stunts (courtesy of the Mad Scientists Movement's effects team), it is a wild ride and not one for the squeamish. And it will be playing at the Fantastic Fest next week as part of...

Emergence from pandemic lockdowns and the promise of in-person festivals has excitement brewing for the future of film, and the genre industry is no exception. The official selection of the 2022 Frontières Platform at the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes is in, and it displays bullish trends for the future of genre.
“There’s a lot of horror, and it kind of goes back to practical effects, and I love that,” says Frontières executive director Annick Mahnert. “Practical effects are coming back, which is great.”
Highlighting this trend is potential standout “Gnomes!” from the Netherlands, a horror film about gnomes who murder curious humans and turn them into sausage while they’re still alive. The film boasts producer and art department master Richard Raaphorst (“Frankenstein’s Army”), who brought the gnomes to life.
Other possible standouts of practical effects are “Requiem for a Robot, “Street Trash” and “Serial Kitten,” which blends costumes and CGI.

Two months ago, we reported that director Richard Raaphorst (of Frankenstein's Army fame) was trying to revive an earlier abandoned project called Worst Case Scenario, by crowdfunding a graphic novel version of the story. Well, the good news is: that book has been successfully funded as it broke its target within 15 days. On top of that, Richard and his companions have added tons of fun extras you can buy into, from postcards (shown here) to stickers to T-shirts to rather magnificent statues... But browsing through their stretch targets, a couple of fun things stand out. Extra pages, for starters, but the last one is laugh-out-loud funny: Richard promises that if someone manages to get the counter up to six million Euro, he'll create the...

All the way back in 2002, a clip appeared on the Internet which showed a trailer for what appeared to be an outrageous zombie spectacle. In it, you saw a beach being stormed by an army of fearsome creatures, parts stitched corpses, parts robots, all Nazi. The clip was called Worst Case Scenario, and was meant to be a proof-of-concept for an upcoming film, to be directed by Richard Raaphorst. A few years later, he made a second clip, which showed another Nazi zombie army drifting into the Netherlands, now as a flotilla of hot air balloons. Both clips showed off a tremendous amount of creativity, designs, and vision. They got millions of views, and the Worst Case Scenario film was awaited with much anticipation....

(Ouch... that looks like it hurts...) It's already more than a decade ago that we were rocked by two excellent proof-of-concept videos for a Nazi zombie cyborg project called Worst Case Scenario. And while that film unfortunately got itself stuck in development hell, the director of those promos went on to make Frankenstein's Army. That director is Richard Raaphorst, and he is back with another stunning proof-of-concept video, this time for a project called Higgs. Not much is known about the story, but I have seen some stunning design art for it, the likes of which this promo just hints at. The title refers to the Higgs-boson, also called "The God Particle", the existence of which was only recently proven by the research team at...

Peeking behind the scenes of filmmaking is fun, but can also be heartbreaking at times. Checking cinemas to see what's playing is one thing, knowing what films were planned but (just) didn't manage to get made is another. One of the best examples of these never-made-films was the Nazi zombie flick Worst Case Scenario more than ten years ago, a project which became a bit of a sensation in pre-production when two extremely well made proof-of-concept videos were put on the Internet (you can find those here and here). Alas, that project ended up scrapped, but the director of those videos was Richard Raaphorst, and he went on to make Frankenstein's Army. Recently, he's been involved in projects like The Profundis, and has been setting...

"They're always there. They're like ghosts," says George A. Romero. The Godfather of the Living Dead isn't referring to one of the ravenous monsters from his movies, but rather movies themselves... the ones he never got to make. Films that never made it out of Development Hell are the focus of Untold Horror, a new project from Dave Alexander and Mark Pollesel that features filmmakers—including George A. Romero, John Landis, and more—discussing their films and passionate ideas that never came to fruition.
In addition to reflecting on films that never came to be, Untold Horror is also helping to resurrect these passion projects, beginning with George A. Romero's The Little World of Humongo Bongo, a children's book that will be released later this year. To learn more about Untold Horror, we have the official press release with full details, as well as the series' trailer:

(I've played with Richard Raaphorst's tentacles... wait, let me rephrase that.) Eleven years ago, Richard Raaphorst became a bit of an overnight Internet sensation due to two proof-of-concept promos for a Nazi-zombie film called Worst Case Scenario. Both videos looked excellent and showed creative flair, awesome design and a true atmosphere of dread. We were all a bit heartbroken when that project faltered and finally was abandoned. Richard Raaphorst went on to design another project though, and ended up directing the fun Frankenstein's Army. So what's next? Well, last summer Richard Raaphorst and his partner Sarina Reilingh were spotted at Fantasia, pitching their project The Profundis, which looks like the crazy offspring of a mating between The Thing and Das Boot. As usual for them,...

Nick Jongerius' debut horror film The Windmill Massacre is currently is post and looking to debut this Spring. Screen Daily is reporting that Kaleidoscope Film Distribution has come on board to handle sales at the upcoming European Film Market during Berlinale. You can be sure there will be some footage rolled out during the market to whet the appetites of buyers that week.We first caught wind (ha!) of this film back in 2013 when Jongerius, at that time a producer on Richard Raaphorst's cinéma vérité horror flick Frankenstein's Army, dropped a nifty proof of concept on us. Jongerius continued to work with another Fa producer, Daniel Koefoed, on his own flick from then on. The Windmill Massacre stars Charlotte Beaumont and Twitch fave Noah Taylor. Tanroh...

Hi everyone (and we do mean everyone, as this contest is worldwide). In the past, we've several times heralded Dutch director Richard Raaphorst's drawing skills. Especially the designs he made for the abandoned Worst Case Scenario project and the not-abandoned Frankenstein's Army film are, rightfully, the stuff of legends. Recently, for fun, he tried his hand at creating old-fashioned anatomical sketches for some of his creatures, and the results were spectacular. He further developed one sketch of the Mosquito monster from Frankenstein's Army, and with the help of artist Jurriaan Verdoold, he reworked that one into an art-deco poster. Now, both the sketch-version and the art-deco poster will be released in a limited print, and all of the art-deco posters will be signed by Richard....

It is not exactly a secret that Dutch director Richard Raaphorst can draw a mean piece of art when necessary. A few years ago, he basically got the production of Frankenstein's Army rolling on the power of just one of his sketches. Indeed, he even makes quick portraits of actors during auditions, re-imagining them in full costume on the spot. So when Richard told me he was doing detailed anatomical drawings of some of the monsters in Frankenstein's Army, I was very much interested. And Damn they looked good! So this is what Richard did: he further developed a very detailed sketch of fan-favorite monster Mosquito, took it to fellow artist Jurriaan Verdoold, and together they created the awesome poster you see below. And it's...

Click here to read our french "Frankenstein's Army" movie review, directed by Richard Raaphorst with Karel Roden, Joshua Sasse, Robert Gwilym starring.Using shocking vintage newsreel footage as his jumping-off point, Raaphorst has hit on a unique and bold premise. Toward the end of World War II, Russian soldiers pushing into eastern Germany stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Victor Frankenstein. The scientists have used the legendary's Frankenstein's work to assemble an army of supersoldiers stitched together from the body parts of their fallen comrades – a desperate Hitler's last ghastly ploy to escape defeat...

After movies like V/H/S and The ABCs of Death, I’m all for horror anthologies abiding by a particular theme. There’s something inherently fun about such a cornucopia of treats, as different directors populate one single film with so many distinctive styles and traits – as long as the segments set the stage for such fun. I’ll always give a horror anthology a try, from Chillerama to The Theatre Bizarre, which is why I’m happy to say we’ve got an exciting anthology coming our way with Fear Paris.
Newly announced, Fear Paris will join the likes of Joe Dante (Gremlins), Xavier Gens (Hitman/Frontier(s)), and Timo Vuorensola (Iron Sky), as they explore the horrific underworld of France’s iconic capital city. Here’s the full press release, accompanied by a tonal teaser below:

Like the bulk of entertainment media, our esteemed crew of movie fanatics here at Cinema Blend annually offers up their favorite Top Ten Films of the Year. As a horror fan, I am always on the lookout for likeminded critics who recognize the genre flicks that have transcended the label to become a cinematic treasure. As you can imagine, it isn.t the most common occurrence. As such, I present to you now, in alphabetical order, the Fear Monger Five Favorite Horrors of 2013. Cue up a really, really slowed-down version of Bing Crosby.s "White Christmas." Frankenstein.s Army I.ve rarely experienced a film that felt just as exciting watching it at home as it would have inside a theater, but Richard Raaphorst.s exceedingly insane Frankenstein.s Army definitely delivered that experience. I attribute that to way the film uses its found-footage approach, putting viewers in a balls-to-the-wall,...

Look out Holland, things are about to get bloody. After serving as a producer on Richard Raaphorst's Frankenstein's Army, writer-director Nick Jongerius set out to create his own exercise in horror with The Windmill Massacre. Envisioned as an eventual English language feature Jongerius has started off instead with a Dutch language short film as a proof of concept to demonstrate that this sort of thing can be done in the Netherlands at all. And now it's up to you to judge whether he's correct because the short is finished in both a 12 minute version - which is being held back for festivals and industry use at the moment - and a 4 minute version, which you'll find below. Here's how Jongerius describes his creation:The Windmill...

The headlines and articles back in summer 1999 said that the film had changed cinema forever. They made extravagant claims that the internet had now been used to such a degree that the marketing and distribution of films would never be the same again. This may have been premature, what these journalists didn’t quite grasp was that the majority of citizens with a connection to the internet were still on slow dial-up connections, and this made watching trailers or downloading porn a lengthy night’s chore at best.
The film that was causing all of the hoopla was none other than Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick’s The Blair Witch Project, although not the first ever in the sub-genre now known as ‘found footage’, it turned out to be the most memorable and acclaimed. The terrible reality of war has provided fertile ground for some fine horror movies over the years. Hellboy was raised by Nazi occultists and Guillermo del Toro conjured up Pan Labyrinth’s from the moral decay of the Spanish Civil War. More recently Dead Snow and Iron Sky have used the Second World War to spawn some truly over the top horrorshows.
With this as our backdrop we come to Frankenstein’s Army from director Richard Raaphorst and writers Chris W. Mitchell and Miguel Tejas-Flores. Premiering at the 2013 Rotterdam International Film Festival the film is coming to the UK on the 30th of September and we’ve got our hands on some of the concept art for the film. The various influences for the artwork should be obvious and like many of horror’s finest directors there is a keen artistic sensibility to the work on show here.

Director Richard Raaphorst’s “Frankenstein’s Army” has had a long and arduous road to screen, and thanks to the promise of a bizarre plot and Nazi biomechanical monsters, has built up a definite sense of anticipation amongst horror fans. The film is Raaphorst’s first feature, following up on a series of popular shorts charting back to “Zombi 1” in 1995, and a career in the art department, having worked on “Beyond Re-Animator”, “Dagon” and others. Having finally emerged, the film has played at a variety of genre festivals, largely to fan approval, and lands shortly on region 2 DVD through Entertainment One. Behind the amusingly pulpy premise of having a descendant of Frankenstein (Czech actor Karel Roden, a recognisable character actor seen in the likes of “Hellboy” and “A Lonely Place to Die”) working for the Nazis during World War II to create a monster army lies a very basic story,...
