Erich Maria Remarque Personal War Experience Born Erich Paul Remark, the man who would later be known as Erich Maria Remarque, was a young soldier drafted into the German army during the tumultuous years of World War I. His experiences on the battlefield, where he was wounded several times, deeply influenced his perspective and writing. The novel is more aligned with an anti-war sentiment than a romanticized or glorified pro-war view, which suggests that Remarque’s personal encounters with war’s grim reality were reflected in the pages of his acclaimed work. The Setting of the Western Front The historical context of...

Today, Jan. 1, isn’t just New Year’s Day — it’s also Public Domain Day, where thousands of cinematic treasures, literary classics, Great American Songbook selections, and works of art see their copyrights expire and enter the public domain.
The headliner this year is the fair use of Mickey Mouse — at least, the Steamboat Willie version of the beloved character — as that copyright expiration has been anticipated for years. However, there’s much more than just Mickey entering the public domain in 2024.

The following contains spoilers for "All Quiet on the Western Front."
The biggest difference between the two theatrical versions of "All Quiet on the Western Front" is the specific perspective they bring to the story of German soldier Paul Bäumer and his friends and fellow enlistees during World War I. There have actually been three adaptations of Erich Maria Remarque's 1929 novel, "All Quiet on the Western Front," but one was a TV movie. The original 1930 theatrical version was the first literary adaptation to win Best Picture and the first film to ever win both that category and Best Director at the 3rd Academy Awards.
Now, over nine decades later, the most recent Netflix adaptation of "All Quiet on the Western Front" has joined the ranks of "Parasite," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," and "Fanny and Alexander" to become one of four foreign-language films with the most wins in Oscar history.

To no one’s surprise, Edward Berger’s epic WWI drama All Quiet on the Western Front is the front runner for this year’s German film awards. The Netflix feature, which picked up nine Oscar nominations and won four — both records for a German movie — received 12 nominations on Friday for Germany’s top cinema honor, known as the Lola.
The film, the first German-language adaptation of the Erich Maria Remarque classic 1929 anti-war novel, is the clear favorite going into this year’s Lolas. In addition to the Oscar sweep — the film won best international feature, best cinematography, best production design, and best score at this year’s Academy Awards — All Quiet on the Western Front dominated the 2023 Baftas, taking seven trophies, including for best film and best director.

Edward Berger's Academy Award-winning film "All Quiet on the Western Front," based on the celebrated novel by Erich Maria Remarque, is as dour, bleak, and emotionally devastating as its source material. Following a young man named Paul Bäumer into the trenches of WWI, "All Quiet" is a litany of desperation, death, mud, and horror, meant to show the true Hellish nature of war. The young Paul is battered into the ground on day one, and rarely manages to stagger to his feet again. He is hungry, filthy, and constantly exposed to violence. Nothing is real but pain now.
As Paul, actor Felix Kammerer made his feature film debut. Prior to "All Quiet," the Austrian actor attended the performing arts-centered Ernst Busch Academy in Berlin, and would go on to be a repertory player at the celebrated Burgtheater in his native Vienna. It was here that Sabrina Zwacht saw Kammerer perform for the first time.

On Sunday, March 12, Edward Berger's film "All Quiet on the Western Front" won four Academy Awards: Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best International Feature, and Best Adapted Screenplay. In terms of Oscar records, it is only the fourth film in a language other than English to win that many awards. Although based on a 1928 German novel by Erich Maria Remarque, it is the first filmed version of "All Quiet" that was made in Germany. The previous two iterations were made in America, with Lewis Milestone's astonishing 1930 adaptation having won Best Picture, and the Delbert Mann's 1979 TV movie being readily available on multiple streaming services.

A ruby-and-diamond bracelet that legendary star Marlene Dietrich commissioned from Van Cleef & Arpels in 1937 and wore to the Academy Awards in 1951 is headed to the auction block. It will be offered as part of Christie’s upcoming June 7 sale in New York, titled “The Magnificent Jewels of Anne Eisenhower.”
Interior designer and jewelry collector Anne Eisenhower.
Eisenhower — an interior designer who died last year and was a granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower — was also privately a collector of many pieces of exceptional jewelry, from a Panthère de Cartier brooch to a Tiffany and Co. Art Deco diamond bracelet on which a rose is depicted by rubies and emeralds. Both are included in the auction, which has a total of 31 lots.
But it’s Dietrich’s bracelet, which Eisenhower anonymously purchased at auction in 1992, that is the undisputed star of the sale as well as the lot with the highest estimate — $2.5 million to $4.5 million.

Alongside the Oscar celebrations for All Quiet on the Western Front in Germany — Edward Berger’s groundbreaking World War I epic won four Academy Awards at the 2023 Oscars on Sunday night, including for best international feature, best score, best production design and best cinematography, a new record for German movie — there was some very Teutonic soul searching.
“A huge success for German cinema,” raved German Chancellor, or prime minister, Olaf Scholz in a message to Berger and his team. German Culture Minister Claudia Roth, who had traveled to Los Angeles for the Oscars, called Berger’s adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s anti-war classic “the right film at the right time,” as it shows “a war in Europe, in all its cruelty and brutality,” just as another such war, the war in Ukraine “is currently raging again in the heart of Europe.”

“It’s not my birthday, but I feel like it is,” Friend said as he accepted the Academy Award for his work on the Netflix film, referencing the previous speech from An Irish Goodbye where the audience sang “Happy Birthday” for star James Martin. This marks Friend’s first Oscar nomination and Oscar win. Among his thanks, Friend attributed his success to his parents for believing in him when he wanted to “join the circus of the film industry.”

In an Oscar season defined by its surprises, from the bizarre, celebrity-led campaign to earn Andrea Riseborough a Best Actress nomination, to Normal People’s Paul Mescal getting a nod aged 26, the biggest has been the rise of a movie no one cared about a few months ago. Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front was released in October to little fanfare. It felt like one of those random original films to appear on a typical Friday morning with no real stars and (it seemed) few corporate expectations. Cut to today, though, and it swept the 2023 Bafta Awards – winning 6 of the 14 categories it was nominated for. At the Oscars, the film has been nominated in nine categories – second only to the 11 for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

If Jane Austen were alive today, and if for some baffling reason she wrote film criticism instead of brilliant novels, she'd probably say it is a truth universally acknowledged that a film that makes a fortune must be in want of a sequel.
Sure enough, no matter how much the industry changes, the desire to capitalize on a hit film by making another one just like it, rubber-stamped for audience familiarity, must be overwhelming. The history of cinema is littered with sequels and for each one that audiences remember — for better or worse — there's at least one that's almost completely forgotten, even if they're the sequel to a film that won Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
Indeed, there are more forgotten Best Picture sequels than you might expect. George C. Scott reprised his Oscar-winning role as General George S. Patton 16 years later, in the TV movie "The Last Days of Patton.

‘Harry Potter’ star Daniel Radcliffe was originally cast in the lead role for ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’. Screenwriter Lesley Paterson has revealed that the ‘Harry Potter’ actor was set to play the role of Paul Baumer in one of his first film projects after the wizardry franchise came to an end in 2011, reports ‘Female First UK’.
Movie bosses believed that casting Daniel, 33, would secure the necessary funding to make the project based on Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 novel but it turned out not to be the case.
Lesley told the ‘Daily Mirror’ newspaper: “When we optioned the book 16 years ago, the landscape was so different. There’s no way you could have done a German-language film and raised any money for it.”
“So we decided pretty early on, we would probably have to pitch it as English speaking with a German accent. And we thought, ‘What names are going to raise finance?...

Whatever happens at the 2023 Oscars on Sunday, Germany’s All Quiet on the Western Front has already made awards history. Edward Berger’s World War I drama, the first German adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s German-language anti-war classic — after Lewis Milestone’s double Oscar-winning version in 1930 and an Emmy-award winning TV take in 1979 — goes into this year’s Oscars with nine nominations, including for best film. That’s the second-highest tally ever for a non-English-language film, just behind the 10 garnered by Ang Lee’s wuxia classic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and by Alfonso Cuarón’s black-and-white Mexican drama Roma.
The accomplishment is all the more impressive given Berger’s relative anonymity in Hollywood. Lee and Cuarón were already established studio directors by the time of their local-language Oscar triumphs. By contrast, Berger has paid his dues in TV. After cutting his teeth on German procedurals and making a well-received...

“Women Talking” was winning a whole lot this weekend. Sarah Polley won the USC Scripter prize for her screenplay on Saturday, the same day that she and the cast were honored with the Robert Altman Award at the Independent Spirit Awards. She capped off her weekend with a Best Adapted Screenplay victory at Sunday’s Writers Guild of America Awards, a key win to burnish her Oscar hopes. But is it enough?
Though “Women Talking” has been the adapted screenplay frontrunner all season, it has been increasingly vulnerable after its rocky performance that resulted in just two Oscar nominations for its script and Best Picture. If the adapted screenplay category were stronger, it probably would’ve fallen out of the top spot by now. But after its weekend wins, it’ll likely remain there, where it has 17/5 odds ahead of the surging No. 2, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which is at 37/10. “Top Gun: Maverick,...

Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front had an unexpected journey to becoming an Oscar frontrunner. The Netflix war drama had a soft launch in Toronto last year but has been building momentum ever since. Proving to be equally popular with critics and industry professionals — All Quiet swept this year’s BAFTAs, winning seven awards, including best film, best director and most of the technical honors — the movie is suddenly a major player at the Academy Awards, not just as a best international feature nominee, but in all nine categories in which it’s nominated, including best picture.
No one has been more surprised by the film’s global success than producer Malte Grunert. Grunert has some Oscar experience (he was a co-producer on 2015 best international feature nominee Land of Mine) but never expected that the first German adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s classic anti-war novel, about...

War is young men dying and old men talking. The former lies at the heart of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1928 novel All Quiet on the Western Front, based on the German writer’s experiences in the trenches of World War I. In Netflix’s new adaptation, the latter half of that axiom is also represented with the addition of a subplot centered on the armistice negotiations that ultimately ended fighting on the Western Front. As in Remarque’s novel, the story is principally told through the eyes of Paul Bäumer, a teenager who—propelled by patriotic fervor—enlists alongside his schoolmates only to be disillusioned […]

James Friend, “All Quiet on the Western Front”
The German-language film “All Quiet on the Western Front” is the third adaptation of the classic anti-war novel by Erich Maria Remarque, which follows Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer), an enthusiastic new soldier who quickly becomes hardened and traumatized by the realities of trench warfare. Friend describes the camerawork on the film “extremely challenging,” elaborating, “I look back and I don’t think I would have changed any element of it, but it was by far the most challenging project of my career to date.” His camerawork...

Three years ago, “Parasite” became the sixth non-English language film to win the Best Original Screenplay Oscar. Best Adapted Screenplay, however, has exclusively awarded English language films, but that can all change with “All Quiet on the Western Front.”
Written by Edward Berger, who also directed, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, the German adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque‘s novel stands a very good chance at becoming the first non-English language winner in Best Adapted Screenplay. Currently in second place in the odds, it’s been been on an uphill trajectory since it ruled the BAFTAs with seven wins, including for its script. At 18/5 odds with 12 Experts and six editors in its corner, it trails Sarah Polley‘s “Women Talking,” which sits at all 69/20 with eight Experts and six editors predicting it. “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and “Living,” all at 9/2, round out the list.

The Best Picture nominees for the 95th Academy Awards are an eclectic bunch. The two highest-grossing films of 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” are represented, as is a tiny indie (“Women Talking”), a German-language Netflix Original (“All Quiet on the Western Front”), and arguably the first sci-fi comedy ever nominated for the top Oscar (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), depending on your definition of “sci-fi” and “comedy.”
They are also an eclectic bunch in terms of where to watch them. The movies are spread out across myriad streaming services and on-demand platforms, or are not currently available to stream at all. That’s right, you may have to actually go to the movies if you want to see every Best Picture nominee this year. What a concept! It can be a little overwhelming trying to keep track of where you can watch every 2023 Oscars Best...

It’s been anything but quiet on the awards front for Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front.” After lurking under the radar for much of this season, the German World War I epic directed by Edward Berger took this year’s Academy Award nominations by storm, racking up an impressive total of nine, including Best Picture, and becoming just the 14th film not in the English language to be shortlisted for the top honor. If it walks away with the Best Picture prize on March 12, it will follow in the footsteps of “Parasite” (2019) as just the second non-English language film to pull off this feat.

The aim of Matt Reeves’ The Batman was to make it feel as if the action could really happen. “There’s no science fiction element or fantastic element that removes it from our reality,” production VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon says, explaining that required doing as much in camera as possible. Special FX supervisor Dominic Tuohy and his team even built four versions of the Batmobile for different uses. Lemmon says that in the ramp jump (pictured right), which occurs as Batman chases the Penguin, his team used a stripped-down vehicle with additional features. “Eventually they were able to dial it in so the car could get up to about 12 feet high,” he claims, adding: “It soared for nearly a hundred feet before it would hit the ground again. And they were able to drive it through a wall of fire at the same time.”

Oscar voters rewarded “All Quiet on the Western Front” with nine nominations, including best picture and international film. But aside from the great work seen onscreen, the film is notable for what it doesn’t do.
There are no heroic acts, no sense of adventure, no cheering when the enemy dies. It’s a true anti-war film.
Producer Malte Grunert says: “There are a lot of things that do not follow the normal dramatic structure that you would expect in a war movie.”
He and director Edward Berger discussed the depiction of violence, since Erich Maria Remarque’s 1927 novel about World War I vividly describes atrocities. “We wanted to keep it violent because a war film has to be. It’s about young boys, just out of school, going to the Western Front and being thrown into violence and pain,” says Grunert. “But we never wanted it to be exploitative.

Every year, the Oscar nomination announcements tend to inspire shrieks of joy, yelps of surprise, and the loud gnashing of teeth and rending of garments. This year was no different, with gasps soundtracking Andrea Riseborough’s somewhat out-of-left-field (and controversial) Best Actress nomination for To Leslie, some scattered “hell-yeahs” accompanying Paul Mescal’s deserving Best Actor nod for Aftersun, and the sound of thousands of simultaneous facepalms after the appalling shut-out of several notable Black performers and female directors from the main categories.

Edward Berger says he didn’t realize the BAFTAs were going his way until the final award of the night, when Best Film became the seventh trophy to add to his film’s haul. If he’d known that All Quiet on the Western Front, his adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s First World War novel would do so well, he might have taken the next day off. Instead, he left the Netflix party at around 2am for a flight to Rome, in time for a 9am call at the historic Cinecittà Studios and a full day of shooting on his follow-up.

A version of this story about “All Quiet on the Western Front” first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The first German-language adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s classic anti-war novel about World War I, “All Quiet on the Western Front” is second only to “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and tied with “The Banshees of Inisherin” for the most Oscar nominations, nine. Among non-English films, only 2000’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and 2018’s “Roma” have ever received more nominations, and the six below-the-line noms for “All Quiet” tie it with “Crouching Tiger” for the most ever for a film not in English.
In addition to its Best Picture and Best International Feature Film nominations, the Netflix release has received noms for cinematography, makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design, sound, visual effects and adapted screenplay. At the Ee British Academy Film Awards on Feb.

What do the 55th annual Academy Awards which took place April 11, 1983 have in common with the upcoming 95th Oscars?
Steven Spielberg and John Williams.
Back in 1983, Spielberg’s beloved “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” was nominated for nine Academy Awards including film, director and score. This year, the 76-year-old Spielberg and Williams, 91, are both nominated for “The Fabelmans.” The filmmaker’s semi-autobiographical drama is in contention for eight Academy Awards including film, director, screenplay and score.
The 55th Oscars made history with Ben Kingsley becoming the first actor of Indian descent to win the best actor Oscar for his extraordinary portrayal of “Gandhi” while Louis Gossett Jr. become the first black actor to win in the supporting category with his iconic turn as tough-nosed D.I. in “An Officer and a Gentleman.” This year, history could be made again in the best actress category. “All Quiet on the Western Front” came out of the BAFTAs with seven wins, including Best Film and Best Director, and boasts nine Oscar nominations. With the influential international Academy voting bloc, could this win Best Picture?
Foreign-language Best Picture wins are still rare, especially without the directing nod that “All Quiet” lacks. Bong Joon Ho won Best Director and Best Picture with “Parasite” in 2020, and it remains an anomaly. The Korean crowd pleaser grossed $252 million worldwide and also won the SAG Ensemble award that went to 2022 Oscar winner “Coda” and 2023 frontrunner “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
Still, grabbing a Best Picture nomination shows how competitive “All Quiet on the Western Front” could be in many categories and Netflix’s formidable awards machine is now focused on its strongest contender, from Best International Feature, Adapted Screenplay, and Cinematography to Production Design, Sound, and Score.

Edward Berger's 2022 adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's 1929 novel "All Quiet on the Western Front" is among the greatest anti-war films of all time, with an inventive and poignant score, truly beautiful cinematography, and a uniquely German perspective on a (German) story that's already been adapted twice for U.S. audiences. The movie has been praised by critics and filmgoers alike (you can read our review here!) for its portrayal of one young man's experiences during the final days of World War I, and has been nominated for nine Oscars at the 2023 Academy Awards. Among those awards are nominations for both Best International Feature Film and Best Picture, which is a pretty massive deal for a German-language film that quietly debuted on Netflix.

The power of an important story told with passion and unflinching clarity always transcends the bonds of time. This explains the durability of Shakespeare’s plays when they land in the right hands, and it explains Edward Berger’s adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s fierce anti-war novel, “All Quite on the Western Front,” which is nominated for the best picture Oscar.
Nearly a century ago, director Lewis Milestone triumphed in one of the first Oscar competitions with his Universal Pictures version of the 1928 tome, filmed, remarkably, completely in and around its Hollywood Studio home.
Today, “Front” is registering with voters who are seeing the horrors of war in Europe live and in color as it sadly unfolds again with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Today, “Front” is registering with voters who are seeing the horrors of war in Europe live and in color as it sadly unfolds again with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Even with predecessors such as “Paths of Glory,” “A Very Long Engagement,” “1917” and of course Lewis Milestone’s 1930 best picture winner of the same name, director Edward Berger’s adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s bestseller “All Quiet on the Western Front” conveys the meat-grinder brutality — the violence, the blood, and the mud — of trench warfare unlike almost any film in the history of the medium.
“These kids are chewed up by the merciless war machine,” says Berger. “They sign up for this war full of hopes and ideals, but very quickly they realize that they have lost everything in the mud, especially their innocence and their youth.”

Edward Berger‘s “All Quiet on the Western Front” is, of course, not the first adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque‘s 1929 bestselling novel to be in Oscar contention. The 1930 adaptation, directed by Lewis Milestone, topped the 3rd Academy Awards, becoming the first film to win Best Picture and Best Director. It was nominated for two other awards, Best Cinematography and Best Writing (as it was known at the time), but lost both. Can Berger’s version win the two categories that Milestone’s lost?
Well, it’s favored to win one so far. After “Top Gun: Maverick’s” shocking snub in cinematography, a category it dominated on the critics circuit, “All Quiet,” lensed by James Friend, slid into pole position in the odds ahead of “Elvis,” “TÁR,” “Empire of Light” and “Bardo.” It was snubbed by the American Society of Cinematographers Awards — no ASC snubbee has won the Oscar since...
