Dexter, Season 8 Episode 11 ‘Monkey in a Box’
Directed by Ernest Dickerson
Written by Jace Richdale & Scott Reynolds
Airs Sundays 8:00pm, Showtime
There is a somewhat clichéd analogy used in regard to a fiction, in which the piece is compared to a dangerously misbehaving child. This line of thought always ends with the line “I’m not angry, I’m just disappointed”. This was applicable a week ago. This week, a more fitting denouement would be a Changeling style scenario where the parent screeches “That’s not my son!” Another potential comparison could be a first for locomotion; having rather lazily drifted off the rails and beyond the point of potential rescue, Dexter is now not even accessible to those craving a suitably entertaining train wreck.
With Vogel dead in a shock tactic by both Oliver Saxon and the writers that doesn’t actually alter the stakes or situation to any significant degree,...

Dexter, Season 8, Episode 10, ‘Goodbye, Miami’ Written By Jace Richdale & Scott Reynolds
Directed By Steve Shill Airs Sundays, 8pm on Showtime -
What’s the best way to wrap up a big long story? Do you concentrate on the characters, ensuring that their journeys come to an end in a satisfying manner? Is it a matter of destroying the world you have set up to justify the use of such a clinical term as ‘the end’? Or is it a case of doing both, throwing every last inspired thought and radical idea into the pot for one final thrill ride both visceral and emotional? Well, it really depends on who you ask. And, ideally, if you want to have the options presented, you should probably have something left in the creative vault before the plug is pulled. With two episodes left, and the show’s past sticking to the formula of...

Dexter Episode 810
“Goodbye Miami”
Written By: Jace Richdale & Scott Reynolds
Directed By: Steve Shill
Original Airdate: 8 September 2013
In This Episode...
Vogel is desperate to make amends with Oliver / Daniel. (I’m going to call him Oliver because that is how he was introduced to us.) She wants to help Oliver, but her help is merely to put him in a really nice institution and to visit every day. Oliver doesn’t appreciate this. He pins Richard’s death on his mother, because she didn’t give Oliver enough attention. And now he is feeling the same way about Dexter. He wants the same kind of life she “gave” to Dexter. Vogel tells Dexter later on that she doesn’t want him to kill her son, and promises that she is going to “save” him. She doesn’t want to be Dexter’s “excuse” for killing him. Dexter pays her lip service,...

Directed By John Dahl
Airs Sundays, 8pm on Showtime
Last night, Dexter crossed the line. There, ladies and gentlemen, is a sentence that has been gathering dust in a drawer in wait for the appropriate moment, when the expletive finally hit the fan. It is the final season after all, so this would be the perfect time. Unfortunately, its use here is not what was wanted, needed…Dexter Morgan did not cross the line, the show that shares his name did. Half way to the end, six episodes into the last saga, the series has dropped its worst episode to date on its ever decreasing fan base. It didn’t cross the line by going to the extreme, taking a wild route. Chance would be a fine thing. No, ‘A Little Reflection’ flipped the bird at its audience by way...

Directed By: John Dahl
Original Airdate: 4 August 2013
In This Episode...
Dexter has been following Zach Hamilton for the last week. Other than a fascination with crime scenes, car accidents, and other places where dead bodies are likely to be, Dexter can’t find any evidence that Zach deserves to be on his table. Dexter is curious when he follows Zach to Vogel’s office. The moment the kid leaves, Dexter confronts her. Vogel admits that Zach’s father brought him to see her because of her work with psychopaths and his propensity towards violence. She comes down with a sudden case of ethics and won’t divulge more, but does ask that if Dexter finds any evidence against Zach, he come to her first.
Dexter’s next crime scene is an easy one - a woman was killed by her boyfriend,...

Dexter, Season 7, Episode 10: “The Dark…Whatever”
Written by Lauren Gussis, Jace Richdale & Scott Reynolds
Directed by Michael Lehmann
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on Showtime
Having made a significant and risky decision within the show’s narrative last week, ‘The Dark…Whatever’ proved to be a battle of how many steps backwards by the Dexter writing team could be rescued by positive movements forward, in effect whether good choices could offset the poor ones. By the end of the episode, the show came up out ahead, but only just, setting up to a very interesting final hurdle.
The unexpected visit of Hannah’s abusive, ex-con father unexpectedly proves to be hopeful as, despite Dexter’s reservations, the man seems to be reformed with a new appreciation for his daughter and ambitions to set up a new life in peace. It’s not long, however, before the real motives start...

Dexter Episode 710
“The Dark... Whatever”
Written By: Lauren Gussis & Jace Richdale and Scott Reynolds
Directed By: Michael Lehmann
Original Airdate: 2 December 2012
In This Episode...
Dexter suspects that the arson investigator, Phillip Basso, is the Phantom Arsonist. He vets him, and quickly discovers that he is not - he’s just weird. He spent that weekend at a Civil War reenactment, and has pictures to prove it.
The arsonist has struck at least seven times in ten days. Most recently, he started his fire on the back of a bus, and this time he wrote “It’s Bobby” instead of just “Bobby,” which signaled to Dexter and Deb that he might be immature or referencing childhood trauma. The bus had a security camera, but it didn’t catch the arsonist’s face - but it did show he grabbed onto one of the bus poles with his bare hands. They got a clean print,...

Dexter, Season 7, Episode 3: “Buck the System”
Written by Jace Richdale
Directed by Stefan Schwartz
Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on Showtime
At the tail end of this week’s episode of Dexter, something wonderfully familiar occurred: a change in direction of plot dictated by well penned conversational exchange, followed by a distinctive musical accompaniment, and one ambiguous, brief reflective piece of narration by the titular character. This is a classic chord from the show’s golden era, and its arrival is not egregious or out of place. It’s like we’ve simply been transported back to a better time.
This quiet, well judged conclusion to the hour wraps up a story strand and murkily sets in motion another, one that can quite comfortably be described as unpredictable, yet another sign that the show has its shooting boots back on. After opening with another callback to old times, namely humorously psychotic daydreams,...

Original Airdate: 14 October 2012

Dexter is like a hungry lion pacing in his cage. Deb won’t let him out of her sight, and he has fantasies of killing anyone who annoys him. It comes to a head when he is sent to take a DNA swab from an uncooperative suspect. Dexter throws him against the wall, and Deb breaks them apart. Outside, the two squabble over the proper way to deal with Dexter’s “affliction.” She finally agrees to let up a bit on him - only because he called her the other night and Deb successfully talked him down.
With a little bit of slack, Dexter sets his sights on a new victim: Ray Speltzer. Recently paroled after a short stint inside for assault, Speltzer is the prime suspect in at least three murders,...

Chicago – Charlie Kaufman (“Adaptation,” “Being John Malkovich”) once wrote for a TV sitcom so odd that its network and most of the U.S. had no idea what to make of it. Without question, “Get a Life” was ahead of its time. So much of the twisted comedy of 2012 owes a debt to this true oddity from two decades ago, a unique gem that is finally getting a complete series release years after fans started clamoring for it.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Was it worth the wait? First and foremost, the show is much funnier than I remembered. As the audio commentary points out (and there’s one on every episode), the series premiere of “Get a Life” was a relatively straightforward comedy about a man-child. It wasn’t nearly as dark and twisted as it would later become. Quickly, “Get a Life” turned more into a show about a demented loner and...

2012 Writers Guild Award Nominations
The 2012 Writers Guild Award nominations were announced yesterday and as with the Emmys cable led the drama categories. Previous nominees Boardwalk Empire and Breaking Bad and new series Homeland all racked up 3 nominations in the drama field. The Good Wife is the only network drama featuring in the Drama Series category, with Dexter getting the other slot and sadly Friday Night Lights missed out.
If you're wondering where Mad Men is; the field of eligibility for these awards runs from December, 1 2010 until November 30, 2011. This makes the Writers Guild Awards similar to the Golden Globes rather than the Emmys regarding the submission time frame. The last new episode of Mad Men aired in October 2010 so it can't be included; yes it has been more than a year since there was new episode of Mad Men.
Network fared much better in the comedy front with Emmy success Modern Family...

The 2012 Writers Guild Awards nominations for TV have been announced, with the WGA finding a way to honor some fresh blood, often at the expense of familiar favorites. Nominated for Drama Series are "Boardwalk Empire," "Breaking Bad," "Game of Thrones," "The Good Wife" and "Homeland." The WGA opted to welcome "Game of Thrones," "Homeland" and "The Good Wife" into the fold at the expense of prior "Mad Men" (off for the year), "Friday Night Lights" and "Dexter." "Dexter" still received a modicum of recognition, as Jace Richdale's "Just Let Go" script was nominated for Episodic Drama along with two "Boardwalk...

Dexter has to put aside his Travis surveillance when Deb tells him that Brother Sam has been shot. The working theory is that it is revenge for Julio's death, perpetrated by Julio's second-in-command, Leo. The cops surround his house and a shoot-out ensues that leaves Leo dead. In his house is the security video from the night Sam was shot. There is no clear face shot, but the perp was wearing the same sweatshirt Leo was. Evidence is circumstantial, but it should be enough to bring to court. Something doesn't sit right for...
