The first child star of German sound films, celebrated for his role in
Emil and the Detectives (1931). He remained essentially typecast for the remainder of his career, unable to shake his image as the perpetual freckle-faced schoolboy. His later roles often saw him as chauffeurs, newspaper sellers, hairdressers or elevator operators.
