When Michael Stein, an actor, stand-up and friend of filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, visited the set of Anderson’s pornography opus Boogie Nights in 1997, he noticed a cast member was missing. “I said,” recalls Stein, “‘Hey where’s Burt?’” Burt Reynolds was playing Jack Horner, a classy porno director and mentor to Mark Wahlberg’s up-and-coming porn stud, Dirk Diggler. The former Hollywood alpha would ultimately be Oscar-nominated for the role, but on the set, he was peeved. Anderson, chain-smoking American Spirit cigarettes with irritation, turned to Stein: “He’s in the trailer, man… He doesn’t want to hang out with us.’”
Refusing to come out of his trailer was one thing; elsewhere on the shoot, it almost came to blows – Reynolds took a swing at the 26-year-old Anderson. “I wasn’t there for that,” says Stein. “I heard about it though!”

Actor Philip Baker Hall is being remembered by Hollywood as one of the great character actors and a “lovely man” who was “never not good” whenever he appeared on screen.
Baker Hall, who died Sunday night at age 90, was honored by his “Magnolia” co-star Patton Oswalt, as well as stars such as Michael McKean, Bradley Whitford and director Greg Mottola, among others in Hollywood.
“I hope he’s in heaven having a sandwich, drinking a glass of milk, doing some f—in’ thing,” Patton Oswalt tweeted, making a reference to a classic scene featuring Baker Hall from “Midnight Run.”

Jeremy Cameron writes: The film-maker Jonathan Demme had a huge interest in Haitian culture: he bought art and sponsored artists, helping to promote their work particularly in the Us. When he knew I was going there with my sister Sarah in the 1990s for her Caribbean Islands Handbook, he gave us contacts and arranged a guide. His name magically opened doors for us all over the country, where he was massively respected and indeed revered for his very genuine love of its art and his great generosity.
Bob Jacobson writes: A production that deserves to be added to your fine account of Jonathan Demme’s work is his version of Kurt Vonnegut’s Who Am I This Time?, shown in PBS’s American Playhouse series in 1982. It features a shy Christopher Walken alongside Susan Sarandon and Robert Ridgely in a quirky romantic comedy set in small-town America. This 53-minute piece...

I think it’s a pretty widely accepted point of view that Boogie Nights was a fantastic movie. While Mark Wahlberg did a solid job as Dirk Diggler I think we can all safely agree that it was characters played by John C. Reilly, Don Cheadle, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Heather Graham, Burt Reynolds, William H. Macy and certainly others (Robert Ridgely, Thomas Jane, Alfred Molina, Luis Gonzalez, and more ) that made this movie the beast that it was. My personal favorite characters in the movie have got to be John C. Reilly’s character Reed Rothchild and Hoffman’s Scotty J. But

Tarzan, Space Sentinels, The New Adventures Of Batman, Flash Gordon, Bravestarr and more, as we salute Filmation...
For a child of the 1970s and 80s, nothing readied you for a half hour of quality entertainment quite like the Filmation logo. Immortalised by their phenomenal success with He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe, and its spin off She-Ra: Princess Of Power, Filmation produced some of the most fondly remembered animated series to grace the small screen.
Over a period of 26 years - in tandem with classic Doctor Who funnily enough - the company's writers, artists and producers delivered a staggering amount of programming. While naysayers point to Filmation's penchant for reusing a stockpile of rotoscoped body movements, or the heavy handedness of its moralising and educational content - children on the other hand, thrilled to an irresistible mixture of action, adventure and superhuman heroes.

“This is a very profane screenplay,” Jason Reitman warned the audience at Lacma before staging his latest Live Read, a recitation of the Paul Thomas Anderson masterpiece Boogie Nights. “It’s one thing to see it. It’s another thing to hear it. If you’re young or religious, you probably should leave now.”
The laughs in the audience suggested everyone knew what they were in for and cheered uproariously as Reitman introduced his cast, which included Taylor Lauter as Dirk Diggler, Don Johnson as Jack Horner, Judy Greer as Amber Waves, Mae Whitman as Rollergirl, Nick Kroll as Reed,...

If you were a fan of the classic G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero series in its first run, before it became horrible and nothing but a toy generator, then you might be pleased to know that you can find similar animation satisfaction in the classic series Sky Commanders. With more of an overarching concept instead of an actual story filling out each episode, the series features a scenario similar to G.I. Joe with two opposing sides battling it out, this time for control of a new continent spawned by a fantastical element that could give whoever controls it untold power. With the expert voice work of Robert Ridgely and Bernard Erhard, Sky Commanders is a great G.I. Joe substitute.

One thing I forgot to mention in another Warner Archives review was that it had the moniker .Hanna-Barbera Classics Collection. implying more were on the way. So we can travel from Saturday morning to our doomed future and follow the adventures of Thundarr. Not that it.s a Hanna-Barbera production. In the year of our lord nineteen hundred and ninety four, a rogue planet comes between the Earth and the Moon that causes destructive changes to the atmosphere. This cataclysm caused society to break down, but our heroes adventures are set two thousand years after this destruction in 3994. Into this harsh realm strides Thundarr the Barbarian (Robert Ridgely) with his sun sword that only he can wield.

Though the animated Thundarr the Barbarian series was only on the air for two seasons and 21 episodes, it's earned a place in the memories of kids who grew up in the early 1980s.
Thundarr takes place in the year 3994. Civilization on Earth is in ruin after a runaway planet sped between Earth and the moon and unleashed "cosmic destruction." The planet is divided into territories that are ruled by magic and science. Thundarr (Bob Ridgely), a barbarian, and his friends Ookla the Mok (Henry Corden) and sorceress Princess Ariel (Nellie Bellflower) travel the countryside and use their powers, courage, and wits to liberate enslaved humans and battle mutants, wizards, thieves and robots.
The complete series has just been released on DVD in a four disc set. It sells for $29.95 from the Warner Archive Collection. You can also try to win a...

While some filmmakers spend their entire careers maximizing the succinct pleasures of the short film, others start out by making shorts that they hope will maximize their chances of becoming a feature film director. This week alone will see the feature debuts of two directors who have turned their short films into full-length one -- Neill Blomkamp, whose 2005 socially conscious alien invasion tale "Alive in Joburg" has been turned into the Peter Jackson-produced "District 9," and Paul Solet, whose 2006 horror short "Grace," about a mother who refuses to give up on her miscarriage has morphed into a feature of the same name starring Jordan Ladd. Here's a look at ten other notable shorts that got the full feature treatment.
