“Elvis” director Baz Luhrmann and singer Doja Cat late on Thursday paid tribute to Shonka Dukureh, a performer and blues singer in the film who was found dead in her apartment on Thursday.
“A special light went out today and all of the Elvis movie family are heartbroken by the loss of Shonka Dukureh,” Luhrmann wrote on his Instagram. “From the moment she came into our world, Shonka brought joy, spirit and of course her voice and her music. Whenever she was on set, on stage or even just in the room, everyone always felt uplifted.”

It’s the beginning of the end on A Discovery of Witches. In the TV adaptation’s third and final season, Diana and Matthew return to the present to face a personal tragedy and deep political division among the creatures. The forces of conservatism seek to preserve the separation between vampires, witches and daemons; while reformers wish to dismantle the status quo. When Star Citizen was publicly revealed via Kickstarter in 2012, it felt like a dream come true for many gamers. Led by Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, Star Citizen’s record-breaking crowdfunding campaign seemingly left it in an ideal position to fulfill some ambitious promises by becoming not just the ultimate sci-fi gaming experience but a title funded and developed outside what was seen as the traditional studio systems.
Years later, though, Star Citizen‘s journey has practically become defined by its controversies. As the debate rages on regarding nearly every aspect of this title, it becomes increasingly clear that the quality of Star Citizen as a video game has almost taken a backseat to the discussion about the title’s history, funding, where its development stands, and what the final chapter on Star Citizen will say.

Star Citizen's next update will add female player characters and other notable content.
Star Citizen will finally let you play as a female character in what little of the game there is to actually play at this time.
Star Citizen's 3.5 update (one of the game's more notable updates in a long time), will allow players to create and play as female characters. Some have stated that this feature has been notably absent from the game up until this point (which is kind of funny when you consider that most of the game is also notably absent from the game), but Star Citizen creator Chris Roberts stated in a press release that the reason they haven't been in the game up until this point is as needlessly complicated and strange as most of the excuses for why Star Citizen isn't more of an actual game.

The unbelievable success of Star Citizen continues a million dollars at a time.
Ok, who keeps giving money to the Star Citizen team?
Following the release of the star-studded trailer for Star Citizen's Squadron 42 single-player campaign, Roberts Space Industries (the game's parent company) reported that they received $379,254 on October 10 and $600,000 over the next three days. This brings the game's lifetime funding total to an astonishing $195,768,020. If you measure its untraditional funding and release structure against the funding and release structure of other games, then Star Citizen is currently the fourth most expensive game ever made.
Before we go any further, it should be noted that this astonishing amount can be attributed to more than just the release of a trailer. Star Citizen's alpha 3.3 was released to the game's public test servers. It's a somewhat substantial release (at least in the context of this game) that not only...

For anyone who has $27,000 burning a hole in their wallet, Cloud Imperium has posted the Legatus Pack for “Star Citizen,” their continuously in-development Mmo. The pack includes 117 ships and 163 in-game extras, including posters and skins.
Actually, make that $28,000. Only players who have reached Concierge status, meaning they’ve spent $1,000 first, will be able to view the Legatus Package. So users seeing a 404 error are not alone. To see the full list of what’s available, visit the “Star Citizen” forums. If the extra $1,000 to pledge towards the title’s development puts you over the line on your budget, you can also call Cloud Imperium customer support to purchase the package separately.
“Star Citizen” made news outside of the gaming industry in 2014 when it entered the Guinness Book of World Records “not as the largest crowdfunded game of all time, but as the largest crowdfunded anything of all time,” to quote Cloud Imperium founder Chris Roberts.

What we know about Star Citizen, including latest news, release date, trailers, and much more!
Star Citizen could very well be the space simulator to end all space simulators - if it ever actually comes out. The game has been in development at Cloud Imperium Games, founded by Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, since it was successfully crowdfunded in 2012. Boasting an enormous massive multiplayer universe, elements of space trading, first-person shooter combat, Star Citizen is one of the most ambitious video games ever put into development.
Several delays and an engine change later, the game is still in early Alpha state with no solid release date. Still, we've seen plenty of the game through trailers and gameplay videos.

Chris Roberts, creator of the Wing Commander series who now presides over the development of Star Citizen, has offered an update on the game’s first-person shooter component, and how it differs from its genre contemporaries.
Kick-starting an informative new video series entitled “10 from the Chairman,” today’s information dump gauges the shooting mechanics that fans can expect to see in the final, consumer-ready build of Cloud Imperium Games’ ambitious title, which is set to be much “more lethal” than those found in Call of Duty.
Rather than the hyper-kinetic set-up that allows players to run and gun at will, Star Citizen‘s first-person shooter sections will require an element of tactical play. Stealth is one of your most precious tools in Robert’s crowdfunded title, and here the Game Director specifies why that separates Star Citizen from the pack.

In crowdfunding terms, Star Citizen is an absolute behemoth. According to the developer, Cloud Imperium, the space sim recently crossed the $90m mark, which places it among the most expensive videogames yet made. Then again, the money flung in the game's direction by its estimated one million backers makes sense when you consider its pedigree: Star Citizen's director is Chris Roberts, the game designer behind the hugely popular Wing Commander series.
Nor is it necessarily difficult to see where the money's going, particularly in light of its recent announcement. At CitizenCon, the game's annual fan jamboree, the single-player mode's voice cast was announced - and it's about as starry as you could possibly expect.
Mark Hamill and John Rhys-Davies, both veterans from Wing Commander, make return appearances. They're joined by Gary Oldman, Mark Strong, Gillian Anderson,...

When Chris Roberts and his studio Cloud Imperium Games took to Kickstarter with a nebulous idea for an epic, sprawling space sim known as Star Citizen, no one in the industry predicted that the vision would grow and expand to become one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns in history. Currently simmering north of $85 million, the haul smashes numerous records, and in the latest installment of the recurring Letter from the Chairman, Roberts addressed a number of fan concerns, including the ever-expanding scope and whether the space sim has succumbed to a delay.

“The coming months are going to be something else. Without sharing internal target dates, I will tell you that we are entering into the tightest schedule we’ve ever had for public releases. What was once a humble kickstarter project with a preliminary goal of $500,000 has now reached over $48million, according to Star Citizen developers Cloud Imperium Games, who recently added a new $50 million stretch goal to the title that will introduce original alien languages.
In a post over on the Robert Space Industries website, Chris Roberts — head honcho at the studio — outlined the scope of the potential extra-terrestrial feature.
“No universal translators, no garbled animal noises: Star Citizen’s aliens will be speaking their own authentic languages. I’m excited about this one… and looking forward to meeting the first fan who learns to speak one of our languages.”
As Roberts alludes to, Star Citizen’s galactic languages will by no means be a half-measure, with real-world linguistics contributing to and indeed defining the spoken language of the game’s trio of alien races — namely the Xi’am, the Banu and the...

It’s easy to forget just how greatly visual effects shifted in the late 1990s. Techniques that had survived more-or-less unchanged since the dawn of cinema - scale models, matte paintings, stop-motion, to name a few - were suddenly joined by a new generation of jaw-dropping computer graphics.
Such groundbreaking movies as Tron, Young Sherlock Holmes and The Abyss paved the way, but the digital revolution pretty much exploded in the 1990s, starting with the eye-popping morph effects of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the dinosaur shots in Jurassic Park and the CG-assisted bullet time of The Matrix in 1999.

In the midst of the CG revolution sweeping through cinemas by the close of the decade - as seen in The Matrix and the year’s other gargantuan release,...

Freelancer is one of my favorite games of all time. Being able to fly wherever I wanted, join whichever faction and combat whoever got in my way was a dream for the Cowboy Bebop, Space Opera loving teen I was. So when I heard about Star Citizen, basically Freelancer but with more freedom, more planets, more everything, and made by Chris Roberts of Freelancer, Starlancer and Wing Commander fame no less. I was ecstatic. I backed it without hesitation during the wildly popular Kickstarter and have been eagerly awaiting its eventual release. But as it has become more popular, and the crowdfunding money has continued to pour in, the promises made by the development team have grown and become even more incredible, and that has me worried.

Roberts Space Industry has released a short video that gives us a very cool look at a design from Star Citizen, the upcoming crowd-funded PC title. The game recently wrapped up its Kickstarter campaign with an impressive $2.1 million in the bank and is already moving forward on bringing the concept art to life, as seen in the latest video to be released by the developer.
Billed as both a space trading and combat simulator for the PC, the upcoming title is currently being developed by Cloud Imperium Games Corporation, a company founded by the legionary Chris Roberts, a man who has contributed a great deal to the genre of space sims with his popular Wing Commander series. Roberts’ hopes that his new Star Citizen title will “breathe new life into space combat games” and that players will feel as though “they are right in the thick of a space battle...

The next from Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts is a sprawling space sim featuring an open world, er galaxy, with a dynamic economy, and of course, stellar dog fights.
Roberts announced the game during Austin's Gdc Online conference, revealing that it was already 12 months into development. The trailer you see above was made using in-game assets for a title that will combine elements of open-space combat, trade, and generally just looking really, really good.
Citing his own Privateer and Freelancer as points of inspiration, with offline and online co-op that will affect your friends' game worlds in a similar way to Demons Souls, Star Citizen sounds like a stew of interesting ingredients.
The specifics of the mechanics are still being developed by Roberts and his team, but the game will have first-person cockpit action along with third-person carrier command. The economy will be central to the experience, too, influenced by player action,...

A day after a local bankruptcy court put David Bergstein's main movie companies under the control of a trustee, another federal court in Los Angeles granted Aramid Entertainment Fund an injunction to stop another entity controlled by Bergstein and his show business partner Ronald Tutor from auctioning off the movie "Black Water Transit."
The U.S. District Court of California issued an order Wednesday for a temporary restraining order to stop Tfc Library from selling rights to the crime drama, which stars Laurence Fishburne, Brittany Snow, Stephen Dorff and Aisha Tyler and was directed by Tony Kaye.
Noting that Bergstein's attorneys Tuesday told a bankruptcy judge that a key part of his business is foreclosing on distressed film libraries, Aramid managing director David Molner said, "It would seem the courts are disrupting that business model."

Director Tony Kaye is no stranger to movies that come with controversy-- he famously sued New Line for $275 million when they wouldn't allow him to use the pseudonym "Humpty Dumpty" on American History X, and has openly criticized both the studio and star Edward Norton for taking the film away from him. And even though his next film, Black Water Transit, is finished, it's still tangled in a series of lawsuits that may keep the film from ever being released. THR has an update on the latest lawsuit, between producers David Bergstein and Chris Roberts, which has been quietly settled. Still Bergstein reportedly considers the film "unreleaseable," and it's unclear when the film might see the light of day, and who might release it. Black Water Transit is a noir thriller set in a post-Katrina New Orleans, starring Stephen Dorff and Fishburne (who, you may recall, stepped in after Bruce...

The legal wrangling over the crime drama "Black Water Transit" has taken another turn, with indie producer-distributor David Bergstein quietly settling a $3.1 million lawsuit brought by a producer on the eve of trial.
Ascendant Pictures and principal Chris Roberts filed suit in February 2008 against Bergstein's Capitol Films and other entities for breach of contract, claiming Bergstein kicked him off the project without paying agreed-upon producers' fees.
"Ascendant got cut off at the knees and wasn't able to do anything," said Glen Rothstein, the company's attorney. "They basically told us to take our ball and go home."
A trial in the case had been scheduled to begin Monday, but Bergstein personally negotiated a settlement with Ascendant lawyers during the holidays, and a request for dismissal of the case was filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Bergstein, whose banner is now Pangea Media Group, did not respond to requests for comment.
