ESPN, which is now one of three corporate divisions of Disney, has reorganized its executive ranks accordingly, elevating content chief Burke Magnus and welcoming back Rosalyn Durant to a key role after a stint in the parks unit.
Jimmy Pitaro, who was elevated to chairman last month amid a larger revamp under Disney CEO Bob Iger, announced the new org structure in a staff memo. (Read it in full below.) The update gives Pitaro a more streamlined structure as the company continues to dismantle the Media and Entertainment Distribution infrastructure put in place by former CEO Bob Chapek. While speculation has swirled about the potential for a spinoff or divestiture of ESPN, Iger last month affirmed it is not for sale and will remain a “differentiator” as part of the Disney portfolio.

Production has begun in Brisbane, Australia, on dramatic comedy film “A Savage Christmas.”
The story is that of a trans woman who, after years of estrangement, returns home for Christmas with her new boyfriend. Expecting her transition to be the focus, it is instead overshadowed by family secrets and lies which threaten not only their lives but another Christmas lunch.
The film is written, directed and produced by feature debutant Madeleine Dyer, who has pitched it as stylistically resembling “Death at a Funeral” and “Silver Linings Playbook.” Screen Australia’s head of content Grainne Brunsdon said the film “blends off-beat humor while reflecting our nation’s diversity.” Dyer co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel Mulvihill and Max Jahufer.
The film is also the debut production from Roaring Entertainment, a newly formed company by Brisbane-based producers Ben McNeill and Mulvihill.

Johannesburg, Sep 18 (Ians) Four cases of avian flu or bird flu were confirmed among the endangered penguins at Boulders Penguin Colony in Cape Town, News24, a local news website reported, citing a clinical veterinarian.
As of Friday, there had been four confirmed cases and another seven suspected cases, said Table Mountain National Park (Tmnp) management.
Once seabirds show symptoms of bird flu, they usually die soon afterward, News24 reported on Saturday, quoting David Roberts, a clinical veterinarian at the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) as saying.
The flu strain is the same as the one detected in seabirds in the Western Cape last year. That outbreak saw thousands of birds die in vulnerable colonies. Now, conservationists worry the same fate could await the endangered penguins, if no quick action is taken.
Roberts said that it could also pose a significant risk to breeding colonies if...

They say Whitney Houston had the voice of an angel. A cousin of Dionne Warwick, she grew up singing in her church choir. She was beautiful, with a smile that could light up a room. Which is why, when she died in 2012, this monumental diva’s fall struck a chord with the entire world. Like so many legends before her, she died of a drug overdose that was a long time coming. Houston had been using for years, but what drove her over the edge remained a mystery to most of the world — until now.
Through interviews with friends and employees (most of her friends were employees), “Whitney: Can I Be Me” filmmakers Nick Broomfield and Rudi Dolezal take a strong stand, connecting the dots between a number of pivotal moments in Houston’s life that led to her heartbreaking decline. Namely: Her controlling parents, the night she was booed...

Making friends is easy, keeping them is impossible... What in the heck is this? A trailer has debuted for an Australian kids adventure movie titled My Pet Dinosaur, which is literally being pitched as "E.T. meets Pixar". The story is about a boy who befriends a dinosaur, that is actually a creation of a military experiment gone wrong. But as they grow closer, he does his best to keep him safe and prevent it from being captured. Seems more like The Iron Giant than Pixar. Starring Jordan Dulieu, Annabel Wolfe, Christopher Gabardi, Tiriel Mora, Harrison Saunders, David Roberts, and Joanne Samuel. This is made by a VFX supervisor, so he knows how to make it all seem realistic, but that doesn't make up for the cheesiness. In predictably unpredictable fashion, season 2 of Please Like Me wrapped with drunken skinny dipping, a disastrous balloon ride, and Josh (Josh Thomas) once again falling asleep with a mentally unstable loved one. As for his same-named hero's sleeping arrangements, Thomas laughed as he told EW, "I don't think that'll happen next year. I don't think we want to get into a situation where, at the end of each season, it's like, 'Who's Josh going to get into bed with?'" That said, Plm's creator and star isn't ruling out the possibility that "maybe next year it'll just be John. That's actually such a cute idea.

The day after Australian actress Yael Stone got married in the Us last year, she turned up for an audition with a slight hangover and in her words, "still glowing."

From Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, the show features Taylor Schilling as an engaged yuppie who is serving a 15-month stint in the slammer for her unwitting role in an international drug smuggling ring.
"The most appealing elements come from the wealth of supporting players, including a breakout turn by Yael Stone as a wonderfully distinctive character who seems to have parachuted in from a 1930s gangster film,...

Fellow tweeter David Roberts drew our attention to this amazing photo from Barack Obama’s campaign website, accurately noting that this pic of Joe Biden on the campaign trail “couldn’t be more Biden-y” (click for Full Size): What is he doing in that photo??? He’s got one foot up on a wooden stool on a stage wearing sunglasses and intensely scowling off into the distance in front of a crowd that isn’t even focused on him. Meaning, it’s perfect. Maybe it’s one of those Facebook photos where he was posing for an inside joke then Obama tagged him so everyone saw it and he’s like “Awww, come on, I look like an idiot if you don’t know the story behind that photo!” (This is 97% of my own Facebook photos, so I sympathize, dude.) Needless to say, the photo lends itself very well...

Popcap Games, famous for creating the Peggle and Plants vs. Zombies has been purchased by Electronic Arts for the sum of $750 million, netting EA a big time social gaming company.
“We picked EA because they have recast their culture around making great digital games,” said David Roberts, CEO of PopCap. “By working with EA, we’ll scale our games and services to deliver more social, mobile, casual fun to an even bigger, global audience.”
This is a good business deal for EA because most social network games are cheap to produce and some end up having very high returns, meaning there is very little risk involved in producing one of these games. I believe more gaming companies should have a smaller group within the company producing social network and mobile games to help offset the cost of producing tripe-a video games.

A year after the Bp debacle, are we doing enough to prevent the next one? The man standing between us and the next disaster tells Daniel Stone he needs more than just a bigger budget.
A year to the day since the explosion that caused the country's biggest oil spill, the pervasive question is, what's changed?

It depends who you ask. Environmentalists have fiercely questioned the government's ability to compel offshore drillers to take new safety precautions. And queries about whether regulators have plugged all the holes that caused last year's disaster are met with answers akin to "it's complicated."

Berlin-based Israeli who creates deceptively complex amateur films starring her friends and posts them on YouTube
Keren Cytter creates short Diy films at a breakneck speed. Using only what she has to hand, the young Berlin-based Israeli writes, shoots and edits each project herself, sometimes in a matter of weeks, casting friends in starring roles and using their apartments and local neighbourhood for sets. She's shown her films at major art spaces everywhere from Tel Aviv to Los Angeles but, long before they get installed in galleries, her films are swiftly posted on YouTube.
While the look is pure home movie, Cytter's work is anything but unthoughtful. Authors such as Samuel Beckett or Julio Cortázar influence some of her stories, featuring amateur actors deadpanning their way through intricate, poetic scripts. Frequently, however, her plots hinge on the stuff of soap opera and classic French film: love, sex and relationships.
