Searchlight Pictures’ “Nightbitch,” starring Amy Adams, will release Dec. 6 in theaters.
According to the official logline, six-time Academy Award nominee Adams stars as a woman “thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler in the suburbs, who slowly embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, as she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a canine.”
Scoot McNairy stars as Adams’ oft-traveling husband. Marielle Heller writes and directs the film adaptation of Rachel Yoder’s acclaimed debut novel.
Heller previously directed 2015’s “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” which earned her an Independent Spirit Award for best first feature, as well as a DGA nomination for first-time feature film. Heller’s other directorial credits include the Oscar-nominated Fred Rogers film “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” and Melissa McCarthy-starrer “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” as well as the filmed...

Morgan Neville is an Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy winning documentarian who has a knack for going deep inside the worlds of various entertainment and media figures in memorable films like the Academy Award winner 20 Feet From Stardom about backup singers; Won’t You Be My Neighbor about Fred Rogers; The Best Of Enemies focused on the rivalry of William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal; Roadrunner which delved into the world of Anthony Bourdain; and films on everyone from Orson Welles to Keith Richards and many others. But in getting Steve Martin to finally commit to a documentary on his life and extraordinary career as groundbreaking stand up comedian to movie star, author, playwright, and musician, Neville got even more than he could have imagined. After HBO’s Defending My Life, Rob Reiner’s recent terrific documentary on a similar comic and film genius Albert Brooks, this insightful and fascinating...

Steve Martin is a comedy legend, plain and simple. And he deserves your attention. Long before he became the star of beloved family comedies like "Parenthood" and "Father of the Bride," he was a massive stand-up comedian, selling out shows, firing off hilarious albums, and cracking up the likes of Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show." He even made such big waves at "Saturday Night Live" that many people mistakenly believe he was once a full-fledged cast member. It's the kind of career open mic comics dream about. Now we're going to find out how Steve Martin made it happen.
Apple TV+ is releasing a two-part documentary from A24 and Tremolo Productions called "Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces." What's particularly interesting about this two-part approach is that it will take a look at Steve Martin's life and career from two different perspectives.

Given the current dismal political and cultural climate as well as streaming services’ massive appetite for celebrity driven content, it comes as no surprise that the 40th edition of the Sundance Film Festival is chock full of portrait documentaries. Frida Kahlo, Christopher Reeve, Luther Vandross and Tammy Faye are just a few of the boldface names that are being examined in various docus featured in the Sundance nonfiction lineup.
The festival is no stranger to star-driven docus. In recent years, films about Ruth Bader Ginsburg (“Rbg”), Fred Rogers (“Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”), Harvey Weinstein (“Untouchable”), Michael Jackson (“Leaving Neverland”), Kanye West (“jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy”), Bill Cosby (“We Need to Talk About Cosby”) and most recently Judy Blume (“Judy Blume Forever”) and Michael J. Although attributed to the late Major League Baseball Hall of Famer/wit/pitchman Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra, one could imagine Albert Maysles, Frederick Wiseman or other legends of the observational/vérité strand of documentary positing this as a driving theme of a keynote address. Such is the understated prowess of this often misunderstood cultural icon, whose considerable achievements both on and off the field warrant a worthy documentary profile.
Enter filmmaker Sean Mullin, whose canon has consisted primarily of fiction features. Back in 2018, his producer, Peter Soboloff, was impressed with Rbg, about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, about television icon Fred Rogers, and he suggested that Mullin consider Yogi Berra as a protagonist. "Oppenheimer" marked a few significant firsts for the main creative team involved in the film. After largely focusing on original concepts, Christopher Nolan pivoted towards a biopic centered on one of the most controversial individuals in American history. Similarly, star Cillian Murphy was tasked with portraying a historical figure for the first time in his career, accepting the added burden of responsibility in ensuring that his depiction of J. Robert Oppenheimer felt that much more lived-in and true to life. When it came time to do his homework and find inspiration on how to bring to life the brilliant physicist behind the Manhattan Project, Murphy looked to some rather unexpected sources.
In a recent interview, the "Oppenheimer" star was asked about the challenges of channeling the distinctive voice he used for the role and the idea of trying to copy how the real-life Oppenheimer actually sounded. While an impersonation was...

Everyone seems to have a personal story about Paul Reubens, aka Pee-wee Herman. And those stories seem always to revolve around birthdays. I didn’t know Reubens, but apparently half of the people on my Facebook timeline did, because they’re all sharing memories about the lengths Reubens would go to every year to celebrate their big day.
“He loved to make your birthday special,” wrote Joel Stillerman, the former MTV and AMC exec who played a role in helping “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” get made, and later worked with him on the film “Blow.” “The texts, memes, videos and gifs would start in the morning and continue all day until you were in tears, and disbelief that anyone could pull this off. Because you knew that it wasn’t just you.”
Quite honestly, seeing the number of people just on my social media timeline who have a similar Paul Reubens story...

Within the last half decade, the kids space has experienced a rapid rise and fall.
As streamers increased their presence within U.S. households, they turned to kids content, a space that has historically been cheaper to produce but yielded higher financial returns, as evidenced by successes like Paw Patrol, Cocomelon, Gabby’s Dollhouse and Bluey.
But led in a cost-cutting strategy by Warner Bros. Discovery (and followed by the likes of Disney, Netflix and Paramount), over the last two years, even legacy brands like Scooby-Doo and Sesame Street have become victims of cancellation or disappearance from platforms with little warning and little to no other ways to access the content.
As many others in the industry are pulling back in the kids space, PBS is gearing up to do even more. “When you think of kids media as just a marketing tool or if you think of it as...

The creator of Arthur is creating another world of anthropomorphic animals for TV.
Max has greenlit a preschool series called Hop from Marc Brown, whose many Arthur books were the source material for the beloved and long-running PBS series, and Arthur series veterans Peter K. Hirsch and Tolon Brown. The series order comes a year after Arthur concluded a 25-year run on PBS.
Hop, targeted at preschoolers, will center characters with disabilities, including its title character, a 6-year-old frog with one leg shorter than the other.
“Even before Arthur ended, I was nurturing a new project about a little frog named Hop, for a younger audience,” Brown said in a statement. “As Hop’s world grew in my imagination, I drew inspiration from the great work my friend Fred Rogers had done. With Arthur, we occasionally introduced characters with disabilities, but they never became part of the ensemble cast in any meaningful way.

When Sesame Street and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood debuted in 1968, they didn’t just usher in a golden age of puppetry on TV. They also set standards for inclusion and education in children’s programming that the industry is still trying to live up to, decades later. Especially at the studios that launched them.
Developed for Children’s Television Workshop (now Sesame Workshop), Sesame Street paired producers with educators to create programming designed to support and empower young viewers from lower income and underrepresented backgrounds, and populated its Manhattan-inspired set not only with a colorful menagerie of Jim Henson’s Muppets but also a racially diverse human cast.
Meanwhile, Henson’s friend Fred Rogers, the eponymous creator, host, head writer, lead musical composer and chief puppeteer of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, leaned on the expertise of child psychologists like his own mentor, Margaret McFarland, to help children navigate their feelings, relationships, self-image and curiosities.

“The idea was that you had all these computer science folks who were suddenly in positions where they had to write story to get people through game environments and you had all these English majors who understood story but were afraid of the technology,” DeWitt told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View. “My prerequisite for that class was having to learn HTML and then I got paired with computer science students to tackle different challenges and create different media types and I came out of it thinking there’s something really interesting here about what I’ve been thinking about...

Presidents of the United States (both sitting and former) have won. So have former Beatles. And a First Lady. And a lot of other unlikely movie types. The truth is, with so many Primetime Emmy Awards handed out – well over 100 annually – it’s easy for some intriguing victors in both the deeper past and more recently to slip through the cracks.
So as a public service, here are a few dozen-plus Emmy winners you may have missed.
Barack Obama – Yes, our 44th President took home an Emmy trophy in 2022 as best narrator for an episode of the doc series “Our Great National Parks.” He thus became the second President to be so honored. To find out the first, see below. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr – It may have escaped your gaze, but the former Beatles won an Emmy last year for top documentary/nonfiction series (shared with Peter Jackson and...

Carl Nargle (Owen Wilson), the amusingly ironic hero of “Paint”, hosts a one-man instructional painting show that gets broadcast live out of the PBS station in Burlington, Vermont. Each afternoon, Carl appears on camera for one hour, puffing on his pipe, holding his brushes and palette as he dashes off an oil painting of a local wilderness setting, explaining all the while, in the unruffled monotone of a stoned hypnotist, how you too can get to a “special place” just by painting what’s in your heart.
Carl himself seems nearly as much of an art object as his canvases of Mt. Mansfield, the Vermont peak he has begun to paint with Ocd frequency. He wears the same denim Western shirts, fuzzy beard and ash-blond Afro that he’s been sporting since 1979. He’s a relic: the landscape painter as Fred Rogers for adults, a kind of soft-rock guru from...

Jackie Gleason never won an Emmy. Neither did Ed Sullivan. Or Andy Griffith. Or Fred Rogers. Or “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry. Or “Rocky & Bullwinkle” genius Jay Ward. Bob Newhart’s sole Emmy win was as a guest actor on “The Big Bang Theory” in 2013.
Yes, the 74 years of Emmy history are chock full of surprises spanning both winners and non-winners. That extends to the Emmy’s Governors Award as well. The TV academy describes that Governors Award – bestowed generally but not always annually since 1978 – as follows: “The Board of Governors of the Television Academy may, when warranted, recognize an individual, company or organization that has made a profound, transformational and long-lasting contribution to the arts and/or science of television by presenting them with the Governors Award.”

There is no television personality more wholesome than Mister Fred Rogers. Fred Rogers was the mastermind behind Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, the ever-relaxing educational children’s show. Over several decades, Rogers taught generations of children about just about everything. The series was informative but comforting and, in many ways, considered a “safe space” for kids to learn and grow. There were a lot of wholesome aspects to the series, but the most recognizable segment was Mister Rogers’ familiar clothing change. Each episode, he’d come into his home and change from a suit jacket and dress shoes into sneakers and a brightly colored cardigan to welcome in a newly relaxed vibe. The origin of those zip-up sweaters, which seem so uniquely connected to Mister Rogers, might be more wholesome than the man himself and his show combined.

Tom Hanks has been trying his hand at old curmudgeons lately, with Elvis and A Man Called Otto. But there's no doubt he's at his best when he's playing sweet-natured characters. And few come more nice than US children's TV favourite Fred Rogers. Marielle Heller's biopic charmer goes beyond the children's favourite onscreen to show he was just as adorable away from the camera as a journalist who comes to interview him (Matthew Rhys) gets emotional support as well as his story. Hanks is so good, you’ll feel nostalgia for him even if this is your own first encounter with a man who, thankfully in a cynical world, was not too good to be true. Read what Wendy Makkena, who co-stars as Dorothy, the partner of the journalist's estranged father,...

Tom Hanks has gained a reputation for being among the nicest actors working today, and this is often reflected in the roles that he takes. However, his role in A Man Called Otto presents Hanks in a different light compared to some of his other movies. As the titular Otto, Hanks is grumpy and cynical, and in a recent interview, he stated that he loved the chance to play a different type of character.
Tom Hanks is known as Hollywood’s nice guy
On-screen, Tom Hanks often plays characters noted for being nice or wholesome. Hanks starred as Mr. Rogers in the 2019 biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a role that he was seemingly born to play. His Oscar-winning performance decades earlier as Forrest Gump brought the character to life in a way that only Hanks could have done.
This niceness that Tom Hanks presents on the screen is not just an act either.

Tom Hanks has revealed which of his films he believes does not get enough praise.
The actor has been a regular fixture in Hollywood since the late 1980s, racking up roles in high-profile films including Big, Toy Story, Saving Private Ryan and Catch Me If You Can.
He won two Oscars back-to-back in 1994 and 1995 for Forrest Gump and Philadelphia respectively, with the Cast Away actor being nominated for Best Actor an additional three times.
His most recent nomination, for Best Supporting Actor, came in 2020 for his role of Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood.
But Hanks believes the 2002 gangster film Road to Perdition is one of his best, and said in a new interview that it isn’t discussed enough when people speak about his career.

It’s not always bad to be late to the party, even when it comes to the Oscars. Sony Pictures’ “A Man Called Otto” had its first official screening on Monday at the Academy Museum, with a crowd full of industry voters and critics alike. Though the film wasn’t really on anyone’s radar, the reception was surprisingly enthusiastic based on social media reactions.
After sitting out the best picture discussion for the last three years, Sony has a few hands to play during the season. Aside from Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Woman King” and J.D. Dillard’s “Devotion,” Marc Forster’s “A Man Called Otto” could strongly appeal to the older demographic of the Academy, sure to bring joyous moments and a few tears.

I’m in a cabin in the middle of nowhere eating vegan chili with Steve from “Blue’s Clues.”
He’s been here — in a town in the Catskill Mountains he asks me not to name — for six years. There’s no train station nearby; from Los Angeles, it took me a flight to Albany plus a 90-minute drive south to get to this place. But for Steve, who lives with the odd kind of fame that leads people to think of his last name as “from ‘Blue’s Clues’” rather than Burns, that remoteness is the appeal.
“I’m most often alone up here, but I’m very rarely lonely,” says Steve, 49, who lived in Brooklyn for most of his adult life before retreating upstate. “There’s much more of me to share here than there was in New York City. I was deflecting all of the stimulus at all times.

Tom Hanks made a surprise appearance on “Saturday Night Live” in a sketch with host Jack Harlow that spoofed Hollywood’s portrayal of Southern culture.
Harlow, the Kentucky-born rapper who has become a hot ticket and a hearthrob as a hip hop musician, was featured in a sketch set in a hardscrabble AA meeting room populated by a group of stereotypically Southern characters engaging in a recovery meeting.
Harlow played a begrudging attendee who finally confesses during to the group that he’s always had an offbeat idea for a Pixar movie involving suitcases. As Harlow cheekily bared his soul, Tom Hanks burst into the room.
“Hi. I’m Tom H. I’m here to research a role and I may be an alcoholic,” Hanks said. (The actor who recently played Mr. Rogers in 2019’s “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” was noticeably wearing a dark-blue zip-up sweater.)

Over his long career, Tom Hanks has established a rock-solid screen persona as an affectionate, good-natured father figure. The culmination of this squeaky-clean image was perhaps his Oscar-nominated performance as a TV host and legendary mensch Fred Rogers in 2019’s “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” But more recent films like “News of the World,” “Finch,” and especially this year’s “Elvis” have seen Hanks embrace darker, more emotionally ambiguous characters.

Former President Bill Clinton believes that “democracy is fragile right now,” speaking candidly on Saturday at A+E Networks and the History Channel’s History Talks about the issues “tearing us apart.”
“What’s more important? Our common humanity or differences?” he mused on stage. “And what works better to build the kind of future we all want? Does cooperation work better or is everything a zero-sum game?”
He answered the rhetorical question by saying, “Life is not a zero-sum game. Football is a zero-sum game — I’ve already watched one game today. I hope it’s not true, but it may be true that saving our democracy is just a zero-sum game because democracy is fragile right now.”

In what is often the case, a group of actors known perhaps more for their work on the big screen than on the small screen managed to land most of the six Emmy nomination slots in the Outstanding Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology or TV Movie category. Featuring a past Spider-Man, a past Batman and a past denizen of the Star Wars galaxy, not to mention a Best Actor Oscar winner, we have a lot of big names who also spent time in some unique television projects that called upon other acting skills. Only two of them are in Limited Series that also landed a nomination for the show itself in the main category, so voters clearly did a lot of sampling. Four of them got their first Emmy nomination ever, and none have ever won.

Sansa rape scene in Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones was already infamous for its graphic scenes of sex, torture and murder by the time the fifth season aired on HBO in 2015. 11. Adam Winrich: Do not get me wrong, I think he is great at whip cracking. Saying that, how much of that can anyone watch at one time? I liked the involvement of Sofia, which is always hilarious, but that made the act for me. Social media loved this act and thought the judge added a whole new comedic layer to it that made it pop.

Happy 66th birthday to actor, producer and director Tom Hanks on July 9, 2022! To celebrate, Hanks has one of the top blockbuster films in theaters currently, playing the evil Col. Tom Parker in “Elvis” opposite Austin Butler as Elvis Presley.
Before hitting the big time in feature films, Hanks was mostly known for the funny yet short-lived comedy series “Bosom Buddies” on ABC. He then teamed up with director Ron Howard for the 1983 blockbuster “Splash,” which made him with one of the most bankable and beloved actors in the 1980s and beyond.

He won two consecutive Academy Awards (Best Actor for “Philadelphia” in 1993 and “Forrest Gump” in 1994) from five nominations. Yet curiously, despite doing remarkable film work, he had not been nominated in nearly two decades.

The children’s television program “Reading Rainbow” aired on PBS from 1983 to 2006, and “Butterfly in the Sky” is the story of how that show came to be, what it was like to work on it and its afterlife. The people interviewed here are all so nice, warm and likable that watching this movie is like sinking into a warm bath.
The key creators of the show were Twila Liggett, who started out as a teacher of eight- and nine-year-old kids, and Cecily Truett Lancit and Larry Lancit, a married couple who had a production company in New York. Liggett left teaching because she didn’t like the excessive and superficial testing of young kids, and she wanted to take what she had learned and bring it to television, which was seen as an enemy of reading for children in the early 1980s.

Mister Rogers' legacy is one of kindness and warmth, no matter who he was addressing -- which was often the young viewers of his long-running television program on PBS. To him, everyone is worth getting to know and listen to, which provides the basis for his show's opening song, "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" Speaking with a gentle, patient tenor, host, ordained minister, and all-around beloved human being Fred Rogers would spend each episode of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" fulfilling the simplest, and grandest, of missions: being a friend. He would teach cognitive skills to children through puppetry, poetry, and songs like "What Do You...

Who is the best male TV star of all time? Our photo gallery above takes on the tough task of ranking the 50 greatest actors and performers. Agree or disagree with our choices?
With over 70 years of television to consider, we had to provide ourselves with a few rules to help simplify things. One of those was that every man in our gallery must have been an ongoing leading star at some point, preferably more often than not. That’s why you will not see such classic supporting actors as Art Carney, Tim Conway, Don Knotts, Peter Dinklage and more. We also do not include any news/sports anchors or journalists such as Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow, Peter Jennings, Howard Cosell since they are not performers.
In order to place them in the rankings, we were looking at a combination of quality (top rated shows with the public or critics...
