Raleigh Studios, the oldest continuously operating film and TV production facility in country, will now be run by Hackman Capital Partners and its affiliate, the Mbs Group.
The shift is part of a strategic partnership between Raleigh, Hackman Capital and Mbs. Financial terms for the arrangement were not disclosed in an announcement. The 10-acre Raleigh complex, which dates to 1915, has 13 soundstages on a campus across the street from the Paramount Pictures lot, the original locus of Hollywood production.
Starting out under the name Clune Studios, Raleigh fostered the original United Artists upon its founding and served as a backdrop for a number of well-known film and TV productions. In the 1980s, it upgraded its offerings, building some of the first soundstages in L.A. to be erected in decades.
Through the new strategic venture, Hcp and Mbs will also take operational control of Raleigh’s Saticoy Studios, a 49,500-square-foot studio facility in Van Nuys,...

The recent addition of Robert Zemeckis’ Romancing The Stone to Netflix – starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner – stirred up a sizeable amount of love and nostalgia for the 1984 caper. In it, Douglas and Turner take on their own Indiana Jones-esque adventure, with crucially a couple at the heart of it that you could really root for.
But whereas Romancing The Stone tends to be very well loved, there’s a lot less affection for its rushed-out sequel, The Jewel Of The Nile. In fact, if anything, the film is best known for the song that Billy Ocean sings over the end credits, When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going (itself based on a line of dialogue that’s spouted a couple of times in the...

"This is how I heard about the boy, Kunta Kinte," Alex Haley (Laurence Fishburne) tells us in the opening moments of History's new miniseries Roots. "And this is how I'll tell you the story." The importance of stories, and the way that we tell them, form the heart of the new Roots, which debuts Monday night at 9 (the eight-hour project will air over four straight nights, simulcast on History, A&E, and Lifetime). From the time we meet Kunta (Malachi Kirby) as a young man abducted from his home in Juffure, Gambia by slavers, until we leave his descendants over 100 years later in the post-Civil War American South, Roots prizes the power of stories and tradition, from how Kunta's Uncle Silla (Derek Luke) teaches him the ways of the Mandinka warrior, to how Kunta's grandson Chicken George (Rege-Jean Page) will tell his own offspring stories about the grandfather he never met,...

When the television mini-series Roots first aired on ABC-tv in 1977, it was a seismic event in the medium. The adaptation of the Alex Haley novel Roots: The Saga Of An American Family earned an unprecedented 37 Emmy nominations, winning nine, in addition to taking home a Golden Globe and a Peabody Award. The ambitious project – presenting the ancestry of one contemporary man in narrative form – sparked discussion, debate and interest in the history of slavery – something that had long been a taboo subject.
The story begins in colonial times, in 1750, with the birth of Kunta Kinte in The Gambia, West Africa. At age 15 he is captured and sold into slavery – transported by ship to colonial America. By the late 18th century, Kunta has made many unsuccessful attempts to escape. He meets a cook named Belle, whom he marries and with whom he has a daughter named Kizzy. Kizzy grows up...

Often great movies come with great commentary tracks. Few things beat listening to filmmakers of masterpieces deconstruct their own films, offering insight into the genius that went into the process. However, some of the worst movies make spectacular commentaries as well. These commentaries give us a look into the delusional process of how an attempt to make fine art turned into some of the worst films in the history of time. Back in 1987, Christopher Reeve convinced Warner Bros. to help him revitalize the Superman franchise from the disappointing third film. He also wanted to bring a level of social responsibility by addressing the nuclear arms race at the height of the Cold War. The result was Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, a bargain-basement sequel that effectively killed the franchise for almost 20 years. In 2006, co-writer Mark Rosenthal recorded a commentary about the production of the film which is included in the Superman Motion Picture Anthology Blu-ray box...

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is unsurpassed at presenting more than 50 centuries of work. I go there constantly, seeing things over and over, better than I’ve ever seen them before. Yet even we who love the Met know that with notable exceptions it has pooh-poohed, misconstrued, or messed up the art of the second half of the twentieth century pretty much since it was made. Now it’s doing it again — but worse. There’s a shallow, pandering fecklessness to the pseudo-extravaganza “Regarding Warhol: Sixty Artists, Fifty Years.” Its underlying idea is so shopworn and flighty it can come as a surprise only to the Met: Andy Warhol’s art and what curators Marla Prather and Mark Rosenthal deem “the Warhol phenomenon” are really, really influential. Prather wonders, “Is there anyone who’s had a bigger influence?” Rosenthal offers, “I’m starting to think of Warhol’s impact...

Whether you measure your movies by box office, reviews, or popular appeal, Sony’s $125 million remake of the 1990 Ah-nuld Schwarzenegger interplanetary action fest Total Recall looks like a strike-out. The movie opened with a lethal softness; a $25.7 million first weekend meaning Recall won’t even come close to making back its budget during its domestic theatrical run. In fact, despite 22 years of ticket price increases, it’s doubtful the movie will even match the original’s $119.3 million haul.
And for those of you who think maybe the problem is Total Recall was outgunned opening while The Dark Knight Rises was still sucking up box office coin, entertain, at least for a moment if you will, the possibility the movie just plain sucks. “I’m James T. Kirk, Captain of the Enterprise!’’ he announces in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Bold, smart and king of the fistfights, Kirk has all the qualities of a great leader.
William Shatner turned to his experience as a Shakespearean actor when he was originally developing his lead character of Kirk in the 60′s series. It was a time of sex, cynicism and Star Wars - and endless lampoons of the old Batman TV shows. Almost inconceivably, given the era that we live in, there had never been a superhero movie that wasn't cheap, laughable, aimed at kids - or all three. So when Superman producers the Salkind brothers decided to follow up their success of the Musketeers movies with another ambitious two-part movie project, they knew they'd need to throw high-level talent at the first ever serious cinematic account of the Man Of Steel.
Enter Richard Donner, riding a high wave of interest from The Omen; enter Marlon Brando, superstar Gene Hackman, Godfather screenwriter Mario Puzo...enter years of hard-working hell inventing entirely new cinematic processes to make us all believe a man can fly. And enter unknown actor Christopher Reeve, ready to take on the dual role of Clark Kent and Kal-El in what remains a definitive interpretation.

It’s interesting to watch how time and again, writers, artists, moviemakers, and studio executives struggle to find ways to adapt the very first comic book super-hero. Superman was something readers (and rival publishers) had never seen before, and he served as the template for the heroic fantasy that followed these last seven decades. When you have powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men, you need visionaries to bring the character from the printed page to other media. Robert Maxwell figured out how to do that with the popular radio serial. In fact, Maxwell came up with various characters and concepts that seeped into the comics, a symbiosis that made both stronger.

I remember when Superman IV: The Quest For Peace was being made. I was the first person to interview screenwriters Mark Rosenthal and Lawerence Konner, who told me about their excitement over the project, about meeting with Christopher Reeve at (what I believe was) an IMAX theatre where they watched a documentary about Earth, showing the planet from space and triggering the notion that Superman would look at his adopted home as one world with no boundaries, and how he would do anything he had to in order to keep humanity safe. Sounds great, doesn’t it? It might have been if the production company, Cannon Films, hadn’t slashed the budget in half just before production began (but that’s another story for another time). Later, I spoke to the film’s director, Sidney Furie, and spent about 90 minutes on the phone with him -- this after having spoken to Richard Donner,...

People have been adapting works of art since time immemorial adjusting the details for the era and culture. There appear to be countless versions of what happens when a sorcerer leaves his apprentice alone to complete his chores. This led to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s 1797 ballad, which was adapted into a symphonic poem by Paul Dukas in 1890. In the 1940s Walt Disney used both as an inspiration for the most beloved sequence in Fantasia, as Mickey Mouse plays he Sorcerer’s Apprentice. These days, with everything from the Disney vaults ripe for reinterpretation, it was inevitable that someone would turn this enchanting sequence into an over-the-top spectacle.
Actor Nicholas Cage is credited with the notion for this retelling of The Sorcerer's Apprentice, which reunites him with director Jon Turteltaub, with Disney hoping for some National treasure magic to be sprinkled over this warmed-up rehash of the familiar. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,...

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is a title that sneaked up on me like a ninja in slippers. With so many heavy-duty films out this summer, you could be forgiven for not having made note of this in your cinematic diary.
The film has slipped out of the Disney production factory in the wake of Toy Story 3, clearly to give those with children another cheeky excuse to visit the cinema again during the holidays. Helmed by the smallest… in terms of height… and yet most powerful producer currently doing the rounds, Jerry Bruckheimer. Of course alarm bells should start ringing the minute you see his name mentioned near a film i.e. loads of huge set pieces and the occasional witty one liner. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,...

It’s been said that there are two kinds of Nicolas Cage films. There are the short-haired, glasses-wearing Cage films where the man in question plays quirky, fun characters that are sometimes intellectually challenging, but are almost always a part of a larger, more interesting and intriguing film. And then there are the biceps a'poppin, long-haired Cage films where he chooses mindless screenplays that allow for an easy paycheck and no need to flex his Oscar-winning muscles in the slightest. The second Cage appears onscreen in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice with his stringy hair flowing freely in the breeze, I knew that even Mickey Mouse couldn’t save me from the kind of Cage film in store for me.

The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness. It’ll take all the courage Dave can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
The film, adaptation of the classic story from “Fantasia,” also stars Monica Bellucci, Teresa Palmer and Toby Kebbell.
