Prior to breaking out as a solo act in late 1975, worked as backup
singers for Charley Pride, and was his opening act at his concerts at one
point. Rowland had also worked as part of the Stamps Quartet.
Lead singer of the country group Dave & Sugar. The "Sugar" part of the
trio included two women (which, at one time or another, included Jackie
Frantz, Vicki Hackeman, Sue Powell, Melissa Dean and Jamie Jaye.
Rowland went solo in 1982 and recorded an album called "Sugar
Free."
Together, Dave & Sugar had three No. 1 hits on Billboard magazine's
country singles chart -- "The Door is Always Open" (1976); "Tear Time"
(1978); and "Golden Tears" (1979). Other major hits included "Queen of
the Silver Dollar" and "I'm Gonna Love You" (1976); "Don't Throw it All
Away," "That's the Way Love Should Be" and "I'm Knee Deep in Loving
You" (1977); "Gotta Quit Lookin' at You Baby" (1978); "Stay With Me"
and "My World Begins and Ends With You" (1979); and "Fool By Your Side"
(1981).
