With roots in real-life murders, “The Hook” urban legend goes hand-in-hand — or should I say hand-in-hook? — with the slasher genre. After being referenced in ’80s slashers He Knows You’re Alone and Final Exam, it went on to at least partially inspire five slashers from the ’90s: Candyman, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, Campfire Tales, and Lovers Lane. Unfortunately, the latter is the least effective of the bunch.
To be fair, Lovers Lane was made independently for $500,000 — a fraction of the budget of the studio films — before being released direct to video in 1999. Directed by Jon Steven Ward and written by Geof Miller (DeepStar Six) and Rory Veal, the film is best remembered for being the film debut of Anna Faris, one year prior to her starring turn in Scary Movie. It was on this set that she met co-star Ben Indra, to whom she was...

In the new independent horror movie Refuge, Carter Roy, Amy Rutberg, and young actress Eva Grace Kellner play a family trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where the population has been almost entirely wiped out by disease. Given recent, panic-causing news events, the film could hardly be more topical. So what is it like to have made a movie about a global pandemic just as people are reaching for their face masks? "It’s incredibly coincidental that it’s peaking right now," says Refuge director Andrew Robertson, whose film recently played the Toronto After Dark and L.A.-based Screamfest genre festivals.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the filmmakers. Director: Andrew Robertson. Writers: Lilly Kanso and Andrew Robertson. Cast: Sebastian Beacon, Chris Kies and Carter Roy. Tagline: "Stay Hidden, Stay Quiet, Stay Alive." Refuge is a small post-apocalyptic film from first time director Andrew Robertson. The film is shot in a very bleak style, reminiscent of John Hillcoat's The Road (2009). The colours look very grey. As well, the story offers desperation. A small family is stuck in their home as a pandemic still lurks on the horizon. Anyone can catch a deadly, new sickness, which is resistant to antibiotics. Still, life must trudge on. Robertson's film offers a few compelling action scenes. But, Refuge also offers a few strange turns, in its short seventy minute runtime. The story begins with Jack (Carter Roy), Kyle (Chris Kies), Nell (Amy Rutberg) and Birdie. This loose knit group...
