The East Coast portion of the 2024 GLAAD Media Awards was marked by two raucous moments at Saturday night’s Manhattan gala — one from Jennifer Lawrence, as she added some cutting, deadpan humor as she presented an achievement award and another when a drag artist and trans activist interrupted the gala’s proceedings to draw attention to the organization’s ties to Israel and its deadly military campaign in Gaza.
On Saturday at the Hilton hotel in Manhattan, Lawrence took the stage to present the Vito Russo Award to gay country singer Orville Peck. Before speaking of her friendship with Peck, the Oscar winner took a shot at former Vice President Mike Pence, who has been accused of, at one point, supporting gay conversion therapy.
“I love the gay community. In fact, I was in love with a homosexual,” she revealed. “ It was my first love. I tried to convert him for years,...

In its second collaboration with the Marché du Film’s Goes to Cannes showcase strand, Australia’s Queer Screen Mardi Gras Film Festival will unveil four projects and a finished film, all looking for global sales, distribution, top-up financing and festival selection.
The five projects to be pitched May 18, will vie for the first €10,000 Goes to Cannes Award.
“We set out to curate a selection that embraces a rich tapestry of stories and identities, while also giving prominence to Australian talent,” says festival director Lisa Rose about her program, which “showcases narratives spanning the spectrum of gay, lesbian, pansexual, bisexual, and transgender experience.”
For instance, “From All Sides” fearlessly tackles queer sexuality, “a rarity in cinema originating from Western Sydney, says Rose, who also cites “Strange Creatures” and its story about two brothers, one of whom identifies as pansexual, as “a perspective rarely centered in film.”

GLAAD’s 10th Annual Studio Responsibility Index, which was released on Thursday, found that the percentage of LGBTQ-inclusive films dipped in 2021, as did racial diversity and screen time for queer characters. And two major studios, Lionsgate and Paramount, both received a failing grace for not having a single gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or queer character in their 2021 films.
The organization also handed out “insufficient” or “poor” grades to the five other major studios — Sony Pictures, United Artists Releasing, Universal Pictures, The Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros. — for their lack of onscreen representation.
Only nine films passed GLAAD’s Vito Russo test, named for the late “Celluloid Closet” author: LGBTQ characters must be identifiable as such, must not be solely or predominantly defined by their sexual orientation or gender identity, must matter to the plot of the film, and must not be a stereotype. LGBTQ characters appeared in a higher percentage of films in 2020 than ever before, according to a new study from GLAAD. The study also found more of those characters were people of color, and more of them than ever had a substantial amount of screen time.
GLAAD’s annual Studio Responsibility Index found that of 44 films from eight major studios released throughout 2020, 10 of them, or 22.7%, had characters who identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual or queer. That percentage is up from 2019, in which only 18.6% had LGBTQ characters.
But for the fourth year in a row, GLAAD found that transgender characters and non-binary characters were completely absent from major studio theatrical releases, with the organization saying that the film industry greatly lags behind TV when it comes to representation in this regard.

In 1981, Vito Russo, one of GLAAD’s founders, published “The Celluloid Closet,” the essential reference guide to the history of gay, lesbian, and bisexual characters in film. In the 1995 Emmy-winning documentary based on his work, narrator Lily Tomlin said: “Hollywood, the great maker of myths, taught straight people what to think about gays and gay people what to think about themselves.”
That same observation is certainly true for transgender people, their friends and family members. Twenty-five years after “The Celluloid Closet” documentary, “Disclosure” director Sam Feder and executive producer Laverne Cox deconstruct 100 years of transgender stereotypes in film and TV. “Disclosure” takes a critical look at media portrayals of trans people from the silent film era to now, and puts 30 transgender people on screen to share how those portrayals impacted them and those who love them.

Marvel has been praised for a great number of things throughout the development of the McU, but one of them is sadly not doing much of anything to increase the visibility of LGBT people. Its lack of any such characters is a routine criticism, and has now been officially documented.
GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, released its annual Studio Responsibility Index, in which it rates studios’ output from the previous year regarding first the percentage of their movies that even acknowledge gay people exist and then how well they do in representing them using the Vito Russo Test.

GLAAD has released its annual Studio Responsibility Index, a thorough analysis of LGBTQ representation in major studio films, and progress was slow in 2019. While the number of LGBTQ characters increased, the appearance of non-white LGBTQ characters decreased and transgender characters were not present at all. While the percentage of LGBTQ characters is the highest its been in the eight-year history of the report, none of the eight major studios received a “Good” grade. The grading system factors in the quality, quantity, and diversity of LGBTQ representation.
GLAAD found that of the 118 films released from major studios in 2019, 22 (18.6 percent) included characters that were lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (LGBTQ). This represents a slight increase from the previous year’s report. Hollywood films are more inclusive of LGBTQ characters than they’ve ever been, but GLAAD says there is still much to be done, slapping all eight of the major Hollywood studios with a grade of “insufficient” or worse when it comes to representation of LGBTQ characters on screen.
That’s because while GLAAD has counted a slight rise in gay, lesbian or bisexual characters in the top-grossing movies of 2019 compared to the year prior, more than half of those characters received less than three minutes of total screen time. And transgender characters – for the third year in a row – remain completely absent from major studio films.
It all comes from GLAAD’s latest Studio Responsibility Index, the eighth year in which the organization has conducted the study. It found that in 2019, a record 22 of 118 films (18.6%) released by Hollywood’s major distributors had LGBTQ characters compared to just 20 of 110 films in...

As the concluding chapter in the nine-film, 42-year-old Skywalker saga, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” was always destined to make cinema history at just about the biggest scale imaginable. But it turns out that the movie, written by J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio and directed by Abrams, makes film history in just about the smallest way possible, as well. (Warning: The following paragraph contains a spoiler for the end of “The Rise of Skywalker.”)
In the final minutes of the movie, Commander D’Acy (Amanda Lawrence), a minor supporting character who first appeared in 2017’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” walks up to another woman in the Resistance and kisses her on the lips. The moment marks the first same-sex kiss ever in a “Star Wars” movie, and a rare example of any kind of romantic same-sex affection expressed in a global tentpole.
It is also just that: a moment,...

Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman Revisit the Making of Their 1989 Landmark AIDS Doc “Common Threads”
It’s been 30 years since the release of the Oscar-winning documentary “Common Threads: Stories From the Quilt,” but directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman remember when they decided to make the film like it was yesterday.
The two were at the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights when they saw the massive quilt displayed on the National Mall.
“We were just stunned and awed by the scale of the quilt and the intimacy of it,” Epstein tells Variety. “I’d never seen anything like that. We were with our friend [fellow filmmaker] Peter Adair and he said, ‘Somebody has to make a film about this. Jeffrey and I ran with that and ran back to San Francisco and met with the Names Project folks and started delving into all the material.”
They began reading more than 2,000 letters that were written by panel makers to find stories to highlight in the...

Arthur Bressan, Jr.Queer cinema in America is not without a sense of loss. In trying to bridge a period of censorship and queer coding (whether in compliance to censors or deliberately transmitting some kind of film language that reads queer without explicitly stating so) to New Queer Cinema and post-New Queer Cinema of today, there is an acceptance and resignation that what pervades a considerable period of queer cinema history is absence, something missing. It is the what could have been: art that was not made because it could not be made, as those who would have were dead. The lost lives and lost potential of HIV/AIDS among artists in the 1980s eidolically looms over queer cinema. But there was still art being made and artists to celebrate. Predating the AIDS epidemic, there was the post-Stonewall art, art of queer liberation that was highly political, a lot of...

Not one mainstream Hollywood film released in 2018 included a trans character, a Thursday report from GLAAD media said.
The watchdog’s Studio Responsibility Index, an annual look at wide film releases, grades the big studios on overall Lgbtq representation. The report also scores the integrity of content using GLAAD’s Vito Russo Test. Film’s statistics stand in embarrassing contrast to the trailblazing work being done on television, the report illustrates.
“In the year that saw the groundbreaking television series ‘Pose’ put a multitude of trans stories front and center and trans creators behind the scenes, ‘Supergirl’ introduced America to TV’s first trans superhero, and ‘A Fantastic Woman’ took home an Oscar; there were still no transgender characters in any major studio film,” the report said.

Fresh off their announcement of the GLAAD Media Awards at Sundance, GLAAD revealed today during the Park City fest that they have partnered with The Black List for the inaugural GLAAD List, a catalog of the most promising unmade Lgbtq-inclusive film scripts in Hollywood that have been hosted on blcklst.com or were included on the 2018 year-end annual Black List.
The curated list includes scripts about trans youth, HIV and AIDS, and Lgbtq icon Bayard Rustin. The scripts on The GLAAD List represent the type of stories that GLAAD would like to see studios producing.
“There is no more reputable source for discovering quality scripts in Hollywood than The Black List,” said Jeremy Blacklow, GLAAD’s Director of Entertainment Media. “The Black List’s commitment to elevating marginalized voices in the film industry is unparalleled and GLAAD is excited to lock arms with them in helping bring diverse Lgbtq stories to Hollywood’s attention.

One of my fondest memories is interviewing Craig Zadan and Neil Meron while producing an honoree video reel that would play before they accepted the Vito Russo Award at the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards in 2013. The interview poetically took place in the heart of the theater district at Sardi’s. Growing up as a gay man, I found community and solace in so many of the musicals that Zadan and Meron were behind so getting to sit down with the icons was a dream come true. The two recounted their favorite films and how they not only knocked down the closet door behind the scenes, but fearlessly included Lgbtq characters and storylines that reached countless audiences around the globe.
We didn’t have a presenter lined up yet to give the Vito Russo Award to Zadan and Meron when the interview took place, but Craig immediately told me not to worry.

Major film studios featured nine fewer films with Lgbtq characters in 2017 compared to the year before, according to an annual report by media-advocacy organization GLAAD.
Only 14 of the 109 films counted by the New York-based organization featured an Lgbtq character last year, accounting for fewer than 13% of major studio releases produced by the top seven studios according to box-office share. The organization rates studios’ efforts as excellent, good, insufficient, poor, or failing.
No film studio has earned an excellent rating in the six years GLAAD has tracked Lgbtq representation in its Studio Responsibility Index. Universal and 20th Century Fox received the highest marks, earning an “insufficient” rating. Among the titles pointed out by GLAAD researchers were Universal’s “Get Out,” which suggested the family’s housekeeper, Georgina, is a lesbian and Fox’s “Alien: Covenant.” The sci-fi action-thriller featured a gay couple, though it wasn’t until after the death of...

The Handmaid’s Tale actress delivered a personal, soul-stirring acceptance speech that not only urged visibility of the community but empowered the Lgbtq youth.
