Moviemaker Bob Yari has been ordered to pay actor Brendan Fraser and director Paul Haggis $12 million (£7.5 million) in damages for improperly withholding profits from hit 2004 film Crash.
In 2007, Haggis launched legal action against the movie's producer Yari, claiming he had breached a profit sharing agreement made in 2002 and failed to give him the correct money he is owed.
Superior Court Judge Daniel J. Buckley ruled earlier this year that Yari had breached his contract by "diverting funds to third parties" from the profits of the $100 million (£63 million)-grossing movie.
And Yari has now been ordered to pay $12 million to Fraser, who played Rick Cabot in the film, and Haggis - although it is unknown how the damages will be split between both parties.
Judge Buckley said Yari had used "bogus contractual interpretations" and "inappropriate accounting procedures" to avoid paying the correct amount of cash to Haggis and Fraser, as well as co-writer Bobby Moresco and producer Mark Harris.
But Yari's attorney Behzad Nahai has slammed the ruling, saying, "We obviously and respectfully disagree with the decision. The effect of this decision is that the person who took the risk and financed and proceeded with the making of this movie, is in essence being penalised by this court."
It's not the only legal dispute Yari is facing over the film - actor Matt Dillon, who played officer John Ryan in the production, launched a lawsuit last year claiming he was also cheated out of $100,000 (£63,000) in profits.

Yesterday the London 2012 Olympics, owners of what may be the most widely panned logo in history, revealed yet another frightening piece of their fragmented branding puzzle: Olympic mascots Mandeville and Wenlock. As the legend goes, the cycloptic blobs were created from the last two drops of British steel used for the London 2012 Olympic Stadium (they built that thing with steel drops?). "That's why we're so shiny," they say on their Web site," reflecting the people, places and things we meet along the way as we travel around the U.K."
No one should get too upset about this: Olympic mascots have rarely predicted the success of the actual games. In fact, the best mascots have emblemized the most disastrous games. Here are our official findings.
The very first Olympic mascot was created for the 1972 Munich games. Design legend Otl Aicher's cherished identity for the games used variations on Olympic colors...

Canada's Movie Central and The Movie Network today announced that they have given the greenlight to a four-hour mini-series adaptation of the long-running superhero 'The Phantom'. The series will be a co-production with Sci Fi Channel (soon to be renamed Syfy). It will debut on Movie Central and The Movie Network in spring 2010.
The Phantom was created by Lee Falk and first appeared in 1936 as a newspaper strip. Since then a character with that name has appeared in comic books by numerous publishers throughout the world. The Phantom has also starred in animated and live-action screen adaptations. The latter include a 1940s movie serial, a 1996 theatrical film and a 1961 TV pilot. Another feature film adaptation, The Phantom: Legacy, is also in the works. A new TV maxi-series is trying to buck the trend and bring back appointment viewing for fictional sagas, a la "The Thorn Birds" or, more recently and modestly, "Angels in America" or "Broken Trail." Most of the big Euro stations have lined up to air "The Pillars of the Earth," but so far there are no broadcast takers in the U.S. or the U.K.
A Germany-Canada co-production spearheaded by Munich-based Tandem Communications and Montreal-based Muse Entertainment, the eight-hour saga, based on Ken Follett's best-seller, will be directed by Sergio Mimica-Gezzan, who has helmed episodes of "Heroes" and "Saving Grace" and was Steven Spielberg's first assistant director on "Saving Private Ryan" and "Schindler's List."
"Pillars" starts lensing June 22 in Hungary and Austria. The premiere is set for the second half of 2010.
