Daniel Sackheim’s intriguing landscapes of Los Angeles evoke a time of classic film of the Film Noir period. His landscapes of Downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood Blvd, the distant pier of Santa Monica create a moody scene iridescent of classics like Double Indemnity; Mildred Pierce, The Third Man, and Shadow of a Doubt. The seductive tones of a bygone era are visually stimulating creating a mood of mystery that captured the eyes of audiences when The Maltese Falcon was first released.
Sackheim’s directing credits include Lovecraft Country, Game of Thrones, True Detective, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, and Ozark to name a few. Having been a director for many years before delving into photography, he says his eye tends to land on a cinematic sensibility naturally. This perspective then informs his approach to photographic storytelling.

When The New Yorker first published Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” in June of 1948, the short story was met with confusion and disgust. To this day, apparently the magazine still hasn’t received that much mail over a work of fiction. Regardless of those early negative reviews, though, this shock tale has since gone on to become ingrained in the public consciousness. Everyone remembers their immediate reaction upon reading about a deceptively quaint village where the locals conduct the most heinous ritual every year.
Despite its widespread recognition, “The Lottery” has received only a few screen adaptations over the years. The earliest was in Cameo Theatre, a long lost 1950s anthology series notable for its minimalistic production design. Then there was Larry Yust’s ‘69 short-film; this piece of kindertrauma captures the source material’s unmatched ability to go from casual to ghastly in mere seconds.

Rogue One and The Theory of Everything actress Felicity Jones is getting behind the wheel for One, a Formula 1 family drama series from Bedrock Entertainment, Mark Fergus, and Hawk Ostby. The project is a first for the Formula 1 organization, which has never hit the track for a scripted series. Jones will star in and produce, with Fergus and Ostby writing the script.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, One focuses on “the tumultuous ascension of a fictitious family-owned Formula 1 team as it contends with fierce personalities, ever-changing rivals, and multi-million-dollar stakes. It will blend fiction with the real-world of F1, which has 23 races scheduled for the 2023 season.”
Writing for the series is delayed because of the writers’ strike. However, once the details of the ongoing battle for representation, fair pay, and better work conditions, among other things, are concluded, Fergus and Ostby will put the pedal to the metal on scripting the series.

It's not that surprising that the man behind "True Detective" and its intricately plotted mysteries is a bit of a control freak. Nic Pizzolatto helped usher in a new era of prestige TV with "True Detective" season 1, aided immensely by career-best performances from Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. Also helping to keep Pizzolatto's characteristically dense storytelling on the more lucid side was director Cary Fukunaga, who reportedly struggled with Pizzolatto. As the director claimed, the showrunner, "kept positioning himself as if he was my boss and I was like, 'But you're not my boss. We're partners. We collaborate.'"
When it came time for season 2, Pizzolatto wasn't having any more of that collaboration nonsense. He wrote the entire season (two episodes were co-written) and remained on set throughout production to keep a close eye on proceedings. As he told Indiewire: "In the first two seasons, if the cameras were rolling,...

ITV Studios has acquired a majority stake in Australian producer Lingo Pictures — marking its first acquisition in the country.
ITV’s production and sales arm paid an undisclosed amount for the Sydney-based company, which is best known for Upright, the Sky and Foxtel Australia drama starring Tim Minchin and House of the Dragons‘ Milly Alcock. Deadline understands the deal value is in the eight-figure US dollars region.
The deal highlights the growing value international production groups are seeing in Australia, whose favorable tax breaks system is increasingly attractive, and Australian dramas, with Paramount+’s Last King of the Cross one of the most sought-after titles available at Mipcom last month.
Lingo owners Helen Bowden and Jason Stephens will continue to head up Lingo, which will now sit in ITV Studios’ international production arm, which Lisa Perrin leads as Managing Director.

Ruby Baker’s carefree days of staying out past curfew, carousing with her besties, and simply being a teenager are all over. The nightmare of The Glass House begins with the protagonist (Leelee Sobieski) learning her parents, David and Grace, have both died in a car accident. Ruby and her younger brother Rhett (Trevor Morgan) are then quickly taken in by family friends and former neighbors Terry and Erin Glass, whose home is located in Malibu. Obviously a big life adjustment like this requires some time, but Ruby’s grief turns into suspicion. There’s something not right about her new guardians.
In this 2001 thriller, those first couple of scenes with the whole Baker clan are wholesome and inviting; David and Grace’s last moments with their children are warmly colored and glowing. But once they’re gone and the Baker children move into their foster home, the movie gradually becomes cold and severe.

While Laura Linney could finally nab her first Emmy for playing Wendy Byrde on “Ozark,” there is another way she can be rewarded for the Netflix drama this year: as the director of the fourth and final season’s 11th episode, “Pound of Flesh and Still Kickin’.” If submitted for this effort, her directorial debut, Linney could pull off a victory in a similar fashion to her co-star and onscreen hubby Jason Bateman, who still hasn’t earned an acting Emmy for the show but won directing when no one expected it in 2019.
Bateman was all the way down in sixth place in our odds when he won for the Season 2 opener, “Reparations.” But in retrospect, we shouldn’t have underestimated the eventual champ, who had built a ton of goodwill as one of the show’s stars, executive producers and main directors. Lovecraft Country claimed its first Emmy for Sound Editing on Saturday, leading Sound Supervisor Tim Kimmel to honor cast member Michael K. Williams during the Creative Arts ceremony at L.A. Live.
“As the one who did get to work [directly] with him, I was very sad to hear of his passing. He was such a great part of the show, and many other shows as well,” Kimmel said backstage. “[He was] a great person to work with, really a professional of his craft, so I was really sad to hear of his passing.”
Williams died at his Brooklyn home on Monday at the age of 54. A cause of death was not disclosed.
A five-time Emmy nominee also known for turns in The Wire, Boardwalk Empire and more, Williams’ most recent Supporting Actor nomination came for his portrayal of Lovecraft Country‘s Montrose Freeman. He’s considered a frontrunner in his category of...

“Lovecraft County” won’t be getting a second season, HBO announced Friday.
“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country. We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey,” HBO said in a statement provided to TheWrap.
Based on the novel by Matt Ruff, “Lovecraft Country” followed Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he journeys with his childhood friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) on a road trip from Chicago across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father Montrose (Michael Kenneth Williams). Following the journey, they must deal with supernatural horrors and racist terrors alike.

“Lovecraft Country” is not being renewed for a second season at HBO, Variety has confirmed.
“We will not be moving forward with a second season of ‘Lovecraft Country,'” HBO said in a statement. “We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”
The series debuted its first — and now only — season in August 2020. The move to not proceed with more of the series is not altogether unexpected, as the show was based on the solo novel of the same name by Matt Ruff. HBO has made similar decisions with other series, such as “Big Little Lies.” That show only received a second season after the author of the book on which it was based, Liane Moriarty, penned original material to serve as the basis for another season.

2021 Golden Globe Final Predictions:
Best TV Series (Drama)
Updated: Feb. 24, 2021
Awards Commentary:
Personally, we wouldn’t be mad to see a surprise victory by “Lovecraft Country” here. That show managed to explore the topics of racial injustice and violence, particularly in the Jim Crow era, through the lens of pulp horror — and to amazing results. But alas, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. didn’t nominate its stars, Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors, leaving us to wonder how committed they are to the HBO series. “The Mandalorian” was an Emmy victor several times over thanks to various craft categories, and “Ratched” comes from the awards bait of Mr. Ryan Murphy. But it likely comes down to two other Netflix dramas: “Ozark” and “The Crown.

The season finale of Misha Green’s Lovecraft Country on HBO has found an audience — a very loyal audience. With creative, action-packed storytelling and a fantastic cast, how could it not? The socially minded sci-fi horror fantasy netted a series high of 1.5 million viewers on Sunday night for its Season 1 closer.
The season finale (read the recap here) of the freshman series hit viewership highs on both linear and digital with 881,000 viewers tuning in to the 9 p.m. telecast, which is up 16% from the series debut. On the digital side, there was almost a 90% increase from the season premiere.
On HBO Max, more subscribers viewed the finale of Lovecraft Country in its first day of availability than any other new episode of an original series on the streaming platform to date. On top of that, Lovecraft Country has taken the No. 1 spot on HBO Max when it comes to original series.

There's nothing like a thought-provoking drama at the end of a drowsy summer.
HBO’s new drama series Lovecraft Country debuts this August.
Based on the critically-acclaimed 2016 novel by Matt Ruff of the same name, it blends terrors both real and supernatural.
It follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he searches for his missing father Montrose.
This causes Atticus, his friend Letitia, and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America.
This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that feel like they arose from a Lovecraftian paperback.
As the trailer below illustrates, it's going to be a bumpy ride as the trio ventures into unfriendly Lovecraft Country, where "their type" isn't welcomed by the natives.
And those racist whites are the more friendly residents.

Lovecraft Country has released its first teaser trailer, showcasing an HBO horror series that appears to be categorically unique in its context and execution.
The 10-episode series, which adapts Matt Ruff’s 2016 novel of the same name, takes the racially-turbulent backdrop of 1950s Jim Crow America with… well, monsters from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback that inexplicably spring to life and wantonly wreak havoc. The premise, while intrinsically original, does bear the creative DNA of Jordan Peele, who’s onboard here as an executive producer, notably joined in that capacity by film and television giant J.J. Abrams, who—in a similar capacity to his Westworld executive producer turn—continues to fulfill his purportedly exorbitant five-year deal with the premium cable channel. Misha Green serves a showrunner.

HBO’s long-awaited drama series “Lovecraft Country” finally hits the network this August, and a first trailer for the series has been unveiled by the network today. Based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, “Lovecraft Country” looks to offer plenty of southern gothic thrills and chills of the kind originated by the eponymous author of such stories as “The Call of Cthulhu” and “The Colour Out of Space.” The original dark fantasy novel explored the connection between the horror fiction of H.P. Lovecraft, and racism in the United States circa the Jim Crow era. Here’s the official synopsis from HBO:
“The series follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This...

Throughout his prolific filmmaking career, M. Night Shyamalan has become synonymous with precision filmmaking, daring premises, and unpredictable twists. As one of the flagship series on Apple TV+, “Servant” bears the unmistakable Shyamalan imprint, with a wry and outlandish sense of humor thrown in. While even Shyamalan’s most chilling horror films bear some humorous flourishes, the sensibility here is enhanced by the show’s creator and writer, Tony Basgallop (“Berlin Station”). Aided by a wildly unhinged and specific performance from Lauren Ambrose, who plays a mother in denial over the death of her infant son, “Servant” feels like a fresh take on the darkly comic genre thriller.
“Servant” is only Shyamalan’s second TV series as executive producer (he previously produced the Fox series “Wayward Pines”), but the exacting auteur has perfected the art of schooling his directors in his way of shooting and working with actors — and he has incredibly high standards.

While many genres lend themselves as well to television as film, horror has generally seemed better suited to the big screen. There’s something fundamental to the nature of horror stories that demands the spell they cast over the audience not last very long — especially because their plots often require the heroes to do dumb things that the audience will start to question after a while. Horror can work incredibly well on television, but usually when it’s cross-bred with another genre (action for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, crime procedural...

It’s going to be a little while before an Apple TV+ show premieres and the metacommentary focuses on anything other than what it means for the fledgling streaming service’s existence and long term strategy.
That’ll happen when a new streaming service pops up from the ground with no library of content to back it up. Apple TV+ is simply the product of whatever Apple and its headphone jack dongle money can afford to churn out at the moment. Season 3 of True Detective was well received, and star Mahershala Ali scored an Emmy nomination for his role as Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas. But what are the chances of Season 4?
HBO president of programming Casey Bloys provided a (slight) update at the TCA press tour on Wednesday. “I think Nic [Pizzolatto] has ideas, but I don’t think he’s landed on anything that he feels passionately about,” he said.
This echoes previous comments from Bloys, who said in February it would handle a potential fourth season the same way as it did with Season 3. He said earlier this year, “If Nic has an idea that he is excited about, we will talk about it but not rushing into anything.”

Our Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy odds currently have Julia Garner out front to win for “Ozark,” but her co-star Janet McTeer, who joined the gritty Netflix drama in its second season, is back in 14th place. While McTeer appears to be a longshot with 100/1 odds, here are four reasons why you shouldn’t underestimate her:
1. “Ozark’s” five Emmy nominations last year
Netflix released the first season of “Ozark” in July 2017, so nearly an entire year before the 2018 Emmys. Keeping that, and the stacked drama field, in mind, its five nominations were an impressive feat, especially if you consider where it ended up hitting: Jason Bateman not only crashed the Best Drama Actor lineup, but also managed to sneak into Best Drama Directing (“The Toll”) alongside co-director Daniel Sackheim (“Tonight We Improvise”). It also got nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Production Design.

“Neon Demon” alum Abbey Lee has joined the cast of Jordan Peele’s “Lovecraft Country” series at HBO, replacing previously cast series regular Elizabeth Debicki.
Ordered straight-to-series more than two years ago, the adaptation of the 2016 Matt Ruff novel follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father.
Lee will now play the role of Christina Braithwaite, the only daughter of the leader of a secret order calling themselves the “Sons of Adam.” Per HBO, “she’s gone to great lengths to earn her father’s respect, to no avail. She’s going to pave her own path to power, and she’s going to use Atticus and his family to do it.”
Michael K. Williams, Wunmi Mosaku, Aunjanue Ellis and Jamie Harris also star.

When it comes to “True Detective,” Nic Pizzolatto is known for being meticulous. On the one hand, his work demands it. His HBO anthology series is a hit mystery with fans hanging on every word — and then googling everything, hoping to solve the case before the onscreen detectives.
But his quest for perfection also carried over to his on-set behavior.
“In the first two seasons, if the cameras were rolling, I was never not on set,” Pizzolatto told IndieWire. Since work began in Season 1, he described establishing ardent work habits including “very clear dialogues” with the actors, emphasizing what directors had to get in each scene, and even making “summarizing exegesis about the scene for the actors and for the crew.” It was all designed to be helpful, but Season 3 brought a change.
“That’s how I always did things, but this third season […] especially with [director] Dan [Sackheim], I just started stepping back.

In a True Detective hour where familiar symbols make a big, mind-blowing comeback, there’s a morbid and marvelous shot near the start of this week’s episode — “The Final Country” — that serves as a signifier all its own. It’s 1990, and detective Wayne Hays arrives at an unspecified crime scene, seemingly right near where Will Purcell was killed and his sister Julie potentially kidnapped one decade earlier. With the camera locked on him, the policeman makes his way up the twisting stairs of a tower near the woods, slowing...

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “True Detective” Season 3, Episode 7, “The Final Country.”]
Daniel Sackheim joined the third season of “True Detective” pretty late — “I did not have a lot [of time],” he told IndieWire — but he knew about the case’s ties to Season 1 from the get-go.
“Nic [Pizzolatto] actually had all of these seven scripts written when I came onto the show,” Sackheim said. “It was always in the cards, so to speak.”
Episode 7, “The Final Country,” unveiled a secret connection between the Purcell case in Season 3 and the case investigated by Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) in Season 1. While Wayne (Mahershala Ali) is being interviewed by Elisa (Sarah Gadon), the docuseries reporter tells him about a theory that blames a pedophile ring for the death of William Purcell and kidnapping of Julie — the same pedophile ring associated with a serial killer felled by Cohle and Hart three years earlier.

After a three-and-a-half year hiatus, Nic Pizzolatto’s crime anthology series True Detective returned for a third season last month. The new installment, headlined by Mahershala Ali, is five weeks into its eight-episode run, and the network is very happy with it.
“Creatively, ratings-wise, it did everything that we wanted it to do,” HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys said in an interview with Deadline. “It’s up to 8 million viewers an episode, we were thrilled with the review, I think fans have really liked it. Obviously acting is superb. I was very, very, very happy with all aspects of it.”
Is HBO already thinking about a fourth installment?
“I think we are going to handle it the same way as the last one — if Nic has an idea that he is excited about, we will talk about it but not rushing into anything,” Bloys said. “I think Nic is...

Hoo boy, a whole lot happened in “True Detective” this week! Turns out the Purcell kids didn’t go over to Ronnie’s house as many times as they say they did — so who were they seeing? The evidence in William’s recovered backpack points to an adult — who else would buy all those toys for him? How does the communion photo figure into all this, given Will’s body was left in a similar, praying pose after his death? And what about the dice, the bloody rocks, and the house near the suspected murder site? Speaking of the woods, what did Wayne (Mahershala Ali) leave in the woods? Amelia’s ghost seems to think he’s covering something up, so it’s not just the aging detective’s deteriorating memory that’s holding up the investigation. Plus, now there’s a mysterious...

The third season of HBO’s “True Detective” premiered Sunday night with two back-to-back episodes, the first grabbing 1.4 million total viewers at 9 p.m. and the second 1.2 million at 10, according to Live + Same Day data from Nielsen.
That is dramatic drop from the 3.2 million who tuned in for the Nic Pizzolatto-created anthology series’ second season debut in 2015 and the 2.3 million who watched the first year’s (starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson) premiere in 2014.
However, when counting time-shifted viewing, replays and streaming, the Mahershala Ali-led season’s debut episode has reached 2.3 million sets of eyeballs (with three playbacks) and the second has hit 1.6 million (counting two playbacks).

HBO enters 2019 preparing for the ending to end all endings: “Game of Thrones” final season is set for March, but closing such a key chapter to the premium cable network’s history only invites questions for its future. What’s next for the franchise? What’s next for HBO? And ultimately, what else can HBO produce to drive viewership, subscriptions, and awards in a crowded TV landscape?
The coming year will hold even more answers, starting with the series listed below. In 2019, HBO is expanding even further — more foreign language series to appeal globally, more TV movies to attract a burgeoning cinematic fan base, and more original programs overall, big and small, to fill the increasing demand for high-quality content. It’s not a question of which series will be the next “Game of Thrones,” but which series (plural) can help HBO retain its premium status. Here’s a few...

True Detective Season 3 is a return to form...a form that pop culture has since moved past from.
This is a spoiler-free True Detective season 3 review, based on the first five episodes.
In Atlanta’s fourth episode, “The Streisand Effect,” Earn (Donald Glover) and Darius (Lakeith Stanfield) are headed to a pawn shop to get some quick money for Earn. En route Earn reveals that he doesn’t know who movie star Steve McQueen is. Darius responds that that’s understandable - most black people don’t know who Steve McQueen is. Earn doubts this claim. Later on at the pawnshop, Earn spots a Steve McQueen poster and asks the black owner of the shop if he knows who Steve McQueen is. “Yeah,” the owner responds. “Would you know who Steve McQueen was if you didn’t work here?” Darius asks, not willing to concede the point. “Black people don...
