Fascinated by the majorettes and their impact on Black culture, H.E.R. approached Winfrey and Sanders with this project after working with them on Color Purple. The duo will produce alongside H.E.R., with Winfrey producing via her Harpo Films, and Sanders through Scott Sanders Productions.
Lauren Ashley Smith has been tapped to pen the script for what is being described as dance movie set at a fictional Historically Black College or University (Hbcu) in Atlanta. The story follows an introverted ballet dancer from L.

On this morning’s Crew Call, we talk with The Color Purple producers Oprah Winfrey and Scott Sanders on blazing a path for their Broadway musical to the big screen.
Winfrey, who starred in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 feature take of the Alice Walker novel, gives props to best friend Gayle King for the actual Broadway musical.
You can listen to our conversation below:
While Sanders, the producer on the original stage musical, was rehearsing during the early aughts, King went to see it, expecting the show to be a waste of time. King was ready to relay some bad news to Winfrey. However, that didn’t happen, and a $11M stage production reaped $103M on Broadway in its first 2005-08 run.
Winfrey says that King “ended up staying for the full rehearsal and then calling me, saying, ‘You’ve got to come see this!'”

As big a deal as it was to become the first “American Idol” winner on Broadway, Fantasia Barrino looks back on her experience replacing Tony winner Lachanze as Celie in “The Color Purple” with a certain level of sorrow. “No one told me how to come out of the character,” said the Grammy-winning singer and actress to IndieWire. “My life was pretty crazy [at that moment], so I was carrying my cross and Celie’s cross at the same time, and that was overload. That was heavy. And so when I was done with it, I was like, ‘I’m done. I would never do this again. I would never step into her shoes again.’”
Coming up on two decades ago, Barrino became the winner of Season 3 of “American Idol” at only 19 years old. Standing on stage belting “I Believe” as tears streamed down her face, and silver confetti rained down, the young single mother from High Point,...

From casting the CEO of the company that is financing their movie for Barbie to re-creating one of the most iconic moments of 20th century American history in 117-degree weather in Rustin, the producers behind this year’s awards films have had to navigate their share of uncomfortable, untenable and downright unbelievable situations to get their features to the big screen.
Even with the ups and downs, there is no place they’d rather be than on set. “I feel like cynicism is the creativity killer. Timothée Chalamet retained his holiday season crown as “Wonka” topped the box office on Thursday. The family film, which looks at chocolatier Willy Wonka and his quest to open the world’s most fantastical candy company, earned $8 million, pushing its domestic gross to $110.6 million. “Wonka” carries an $125 million budget and has been a success overseas, where it has earned more than $180 million.
In second place, Universal and Illumination’s “Migration” earned $6.5 million to bring its domestic total to $37.1 million. The film follows a family of mallards whose trip south for the winter takes some unexpected detours. “Migration” has been a slow starter at the box office, but it has picked up some momentum this week with kids out of school and parents looking for diversions. Its $72 million budget is relatively economical for an animated film, but the film has ground to make up if it’s going to turn a profit.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from “The Color Purple,” now playing in theaters.
As “The Color Purple” director Blitz Bazawule and his star-studded cast made their press rounds ahead of the musical movie’s Christmas Day release, they paid a special trip to visit “The View” and Whoopi Goldberg, who starred in the 1985 movie adaptation of Alice Walker’s classic novel.
It’d been nearly 40 years since Goldberg played Celie, an abused and uneducated Southern Black woman whose journey to liberation is at the center of Walker’s tale. Bazawule and stars Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks and Taraji P. Henson wanted to give her her flowers.
“’The Color Purple’ is sacred ground. You don’t just show up to it with nothing to offer or nothing to contribute,” Bazawule said, when Goldberg asked why he decided to sign on for the film. “It’s been a brilliant, Pulitzer Prize-winning book.

Introducing Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, ‘The Color Purple’s’ Young Celie: ‘This Is Work I Was Meant to Do’
Turning 30 is always a memorable moment, but “The Color Purple” actor Phylicia Pearl Mpasi rang in her third decade with a birthday serenade from Oprah Winfrey.
Coincidentally, Mpasi’s birthday (November 16) fell on another special occasion: the first screening of the musical reimagining of “The Color Purple.” The atmosphere was charged with anticipation since this was the debut of the film before critics and press, but the mood backstage was particularly jovial since it was the first time the cast — Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey and Mpasi, as well as Winfrey, producer Scott Sanders and director Blitz Bazawule — had assembled since wrapping production in 2022. But there was an extra element of emotion for Mpasi, since “The Color Purple” marks her feature film debut.

For a story so filled with trauma and sorrow — violence, suffering, racism, child abduction, spousal abuse — the second screen adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1982 novel, The Color Purple, is a surprisingly joyful experience. The prevailing takeaway is its resounding themes of spirituality, self-discovery, redemption and resilience. Based on the 2005 Broadway musical that was revived to great acclaim 10 years later, the production marks a confident move onto a much larger canvas for Ghanaian multimedia artist Blitz Bazawule. It nods graciously to the imprint of Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film while vigorously forging its own identity.
The connection to the earlier version is partly built in by having Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones back on board as producers (alongside stage producer Scott Sanders). It’s also evident in the color palette of those shimmering Amblin skies, in two songs from the movie incorporated into the Broadway score and in an unbilled cameo early on.

One more trailer has arrived for the musical version of The Color Purple ahead of its theatrical release next month in the UK.
To date, the only major cinematic interpretation of The Color Purple is the fondly-remembered 1985 adaptation by Steven Spielberg.

Corey Hawkins and Danielle Brooks may both be currently starring in the musical adaptation of The Color Purple, but the two have a long history, having been classmates at Juilliard over a decade ago.
The duo were part of the same 18-person class and have maintained a friendship since, with Hawkins telling The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Los Angeles premiere Wednesday that “for this moment to come, it was always Danielle’s but I got the call first; I remember calling [producer] Scott Sanders and literally hung up the phone, picked it back up and I was like, ‘Bro, it has to be Danielle Brooks right? I’m not crazy.’ And of course it was, it always was,” he recounted. “She’s an incredible talent, she stands on her own, and when people see this film they will understand the magnitude of what she brings, of what all of these women bring.

As far as movies with history go, The Color Purple — about Celie, an abused teenage Black girl in the early 20th century — is as storied as they come. Based on Alice Walker’s seminal Pulitzer-winning 1982 book, it has been a 1985 Steven Spielberg pic, a Broadway musical in the mid-2000s and a Tony-winning revival play.
So when Blitz Bazawule got the call asking him to direct a film musical for 2023, his first question was: “Why?”
“It has been done and done and done, so what can you possibly do with this?” he said at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles event Saturday at the DGA Theater. “It’s sacred work and hallowed ground. The Color Purple is a critical and important text for so many people who are healing, so if you have nothing to say, you better shut up.”

They held a world premiere screening of the new film adaptation of the stage musical of “The Color Purple” Thursday night at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, the kind of electric event that makes you feel special to have been invited. There wasn’t an empty seat in the cavernous theater, and there wasn’t an unmoved attendee by the end. Those who were suspecting that the film was being held back from previews because Warner Bros. and the filmmakers had something to hide were proven wrong, as it was rousing, superbly acted, powerfully directed, masterfully choreographed and all-around terrific.

Thursday night at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles, the cast and crew of Warner Bros.’ “The Color Purple” dazzled audiences in its first-ever showing. Lead actress Fantasia Barrino was joined by fellow cast members Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Gabriella “H.E.R.” Wilson, Halle Bailey and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, plus director Blitz Bazawule and producers Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey.
After a screening of this film adaptation of the stage musical, which in turn was based on Alice Walker‘s 1982 novel of the same name, Variety’s Angelique Jackson moderated a nearly hour-long panel in which the tears flowed openly. It was a long time getting to this point, from the movie’s initial announcement in November 2018, to casting and filming, and then the 118-day actors’ strike.
“This is why I said it’s gonna bring healing,” Barrino told the packed theater at the end of the panel.

In 2007, Jennifer Hudson dominated awards season for her undeniable portrait of Effie White in the movie musical adaptation of “Dreamgirls.” Her show-stopping performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” had theaters around America erupting in cheers, and she deservedly took home the best supporting Oscar — becoming the first “American Idol” contestant to do so.
Now Fantasia Barrino, the electric singer who beat Hudson as the winner of the third season of “Idol,” is about to headline a movie musical that could be collecting gold statuettes of its own. Barrino stars in Warner Bros.’ “The Color Purple,” releasing in theaters on Christmas, and Oscar voters are sure to take notice.

An emotional Oprah Winfrey and the cast of The Color Purple spoke about the transformative power of the upcoming film at its first public screening, getting spiritual as they cited its divine effect on their lives.
“For every one of us up here, it is a story of, ‘look at what God has done,'” said Winfrey, who wore a lilac sequined outfit in a nod to the musical, on the panel after the showing at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on Thursday night.
Winfrey, a producer on the musical with Scott Sanders and an Oscar nominee for her role as Sophia in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film adaptation, said the Alice Walker book the films are based on helped her comprehend the sexual abuse she endured as a child.

Alice Walker's acclaimed novel "The Color Purple" is being adapted once more. Decades after Steven Spielberg's 1985 adaptation received accolades, a film inspired by the similarly lauded stage musical - which originally ran from 2005 to 2008, then again from 2015 to 2017 - is finally hitting theaters this December with an A-list cast for the ages.
On Feb. 3, 2022, during an "ABC News" special, Oprah Winfrey, who starred in Spielberg's film, unveiled the official lineup of lead actors in the forthcoming adaptation: Fantasia Taylor, Halle Bailey, Danielle Brooks, and Colman Domingo. Others who were later announced to join the star-studded cast include H.E.R., Taraji P. Henson, Ciara, Corey Hawkins, David Alan Grier, and newcomer Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, who plays young Celie.

Almost 40 years after Steven Spielberg debuted his adaptation of author Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "The Color Purple" and turned it into an Oscar-nominated awards darling (though it came away with zero wins, incredibly enough), and almost 20 years after the story was adapted as a celebrated musical on Broadway, Warner Bros. is getting another kick at the can. This time, they're combining the best of both worlds. Most everyone knows the classic story about Black sisters growing up under severe abuse and racial discrimination in the American South, spanning decades of their lives in an epic drama. But there's still plenty of heartfelt drama and stirring musical numbers to bring to life on the big screen, as audiences across the world are about to find out.

Taraji P. Henson is busting down doors and taking names as fan favorite character Shug in the upcoming movie musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” Based on the acclaimed Alice Walker novel, filmmaker Blitz Bazawule’s film follows Celie (Fantasia Barrino) as she finds solace and perhaps more with Henson’s dazzling jazz singer Shug.
Star Barrino reprises the role of Celie after previously portraying the character in the Broadway show from 2007 to 2008 before embarking on the national tour in 2010. The Broadway show began in 2005 and was later revived in 2015, with Jennifer Hudson and Cynthia Erivo among the actresses who played Celie onstage. “The Little Mermaid” breakout Halle Bailey plays the younger version of Celie in the film that spans decades.

In 1985, Steven Spielberg brought Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Color Purple, to the big screen and racked up Academy Award nominations for himself, for the film’s stars, Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg and Margaret Avery, and the film’s composer, Quincy Jones. Warner Bros. now re-adapts the story based on the musical version from director Blitz Bazawule, a multi-medium artist whose breakout first feature is the highly acclaimed The Burial of Kojo.
The official synopsis from Warner Bros. reads,
“A story of love and resilience, The Color Purple is a decades-spanning tale of one woman’s journey to independence. Celie faces many hardships in her life, but ultimately finds extraordinary strength and hope in the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood.”

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for The Color Purple, based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book and the musical adaptation of her 1982 novel.
The film centers on Celie (the younger version is played by Phylicia Pearl Mpasi and the adult version by American Idol alum Fantasia Barrino), a poor Black woman living in the American South of the early 1900s. The first trailer, released in May, showed Celie being separated from her sister Nettie (played by Halle Bailey and Ciara). Over the course of several years, the film explores Celie’s struggles as she yearns to find herself and her own joy.
The new trailer jumps between Celie and Nettie’s childhood together and Celie missing her later as she’s determined to reunite with her.
“I know my sister’s somewhere in the world,” Celie says via voiceover as viewers see an image of the older Nettie played by Ciara.

Culturally, “The Color Purple” is many different things to many people. To some, it’s the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1982 novel of the same name by Alice Walker, the 1985 adaptation of that novel by Steven Spielberg, and more recently, it’s the 2005 musical with music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray. And it’s this musical that begets the latest cinematic take on “The Color Purple.”

Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg have reunited to revive “The Color Purple” into a movie musical, directed by Blitz Bazawule.
After debuting footage for distributors at CinemaCon last month, Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the new adaptation, which is set to premiere in North America on Dec. 25. The film will open internationally beginning Jan. 18, 2024.
The trailer features visually bold motifs as it takes audiences inside Celie’s headspace with “American Idol” winner Fantasia reprising her Broadway role, in her major motion picture debut. It also gives an insight into the sisterhood of the women at the heart of the story. Elevated by grandeur, the highlights are the musical clips and jaw-dropping production set against the backdrop of Mister’s Farm.
Starring alongside Fantasia are Danielle Brooks as Sofia, who earned a Tony nomination for the role in the 2016 Broadway revival, Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, Colman Domingo as Mister,...

Alice Walker’s timeless novel “The Color Purple” is returning to the big screen for the first time in four decades.
Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated 1985 adaptation followed a young Black woman named Celie (then played by Whoopi Goldberg) trying to find her identity in rural Georgia while coping with her abusive father and the prejudices of the post-Antebellum South and forming a close connection with jazz singer Shug. A stage musical adaptation of Walker’s book debuted on Broadway in 2005, with Celie played by the likes of Lachanze and Cynthia Erivo throughout its run and revival. Now, in director Blitz Bazawule’s Warner Bros. film version of the musical (out Christmas Day), R&b star Fantasia Barrino, who appeared on Broadway in the show from 2007 to 2008 and then in the national tour two years later, takes on the role of Celie, with Taraji P. Henson as Shug. Watch the first...

The striking Writers Guild of America denied a request for a waiver to allow for the Tony Awards to air on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on June 11, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
This week, this season’s Tony Awards Management Committee — which is comprised of eight representatives of the Broadway League, including president Charlotte St. Martin and well-known producers Jordan Roth and Scott Sanders, and eight representatives of the American Theater Wing, including president Heather Hitchens — formally petitioned the Writers Guild for such a waiver, noting how much financially struggling Broadway shows depend on exposure from the Tonys telecast for a box office bump. (This season, shows hanging on in hopes of a Tonys bounce include the front-running musicals Some Like It Hot and Kimberly Akimbo and the play Leopoldstadt.)
The management committee has set an emergency meeting for Monday morning to determine the best path forward.
