On “House of the Dragon,” HBO’s fantasy epic that takes place two centuries before “Game of Thrones,” Matt Smith plays Daemon, a warrior prince who exists among fire-breathing reptiles and palace intrigue. But if his character were ever to leap deeper into the supernatural, Smith has some ideas about where he could go. “I think Daemon would make a really good vampire,” he says. “I can imagine him wandering the earth alone for all eternity.”
He certainly has the coloring: Pallid and platinum-blonde, Daemon looks as if he could have arrived in the forbidding and dark world of Westeros all the way from Transylvania. But he might be too hotblooded to play the vampire. And “House of the Dragon” — a prequel to the Emmy-gobbling, earth-shattering hit “Game of Thrones,” set during the reign of the incestuous Targaryen dynasty — is unlikely to pivot into creature horror.

House of the Dragon fans have been excitedly awaiting any updates regarding the second season. However, it seems that history is repeating itself with a familiar mistake that is leaving some fans frustrated.
Well, a recent report from Entertainment Weekly has lit up the fandom with the announcement that the eagerly awaited House of the Dragon Season 2 will indeed come with a sharpened focus on story-driven pacing, even if it means echoing Game of Thrones’ unpopular decision to reduce the episode count.
House of the Dragon‘s Velaryon family
As a devoted Westerosi spectator, we recall the ache of wanting more as GoT neared its end, and now, that familiar feeling resurfaces with House of the Dragon. The latter’s second season, which will hopefully avoid the hurried storytelling that dogged Game of Thrones, will only have eight episodes.

After waiting nearly two years since the first season of House of the Dragon aired on HBO, fans finally have a full official trailer for the show’s second season, which is set to premiere on June 16.
The Game of Thrones prequel captured viewers’ attention back in the summer and fall of 2022, showcasing the story of Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and House Targaryen hundreds of years before the original characters of GoT existed. On Tuesday, HBO released the full trailer for “House of the Dragon” Season 2, which premieres June 16.
The eight-episode second season of the “Game of Thrones” prequel finds the Targaryens in a civil war, with the Greens – supporters of Aegon II Targaryn (Tom Glynn-Carney), son of late king Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and the traditional heir – on one side, and the Blacks – partisans of Viserys’ daughter Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), Viserys’ chosen heir, and her husband/uncle Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) on the other. Both sides claim the Iron Throne, and they will kill their kin to get it.
The trailer previews the combination of political strategy, intense action, and interpersonal backstabbing that’s the “Game of Thrones” franchise’s signature. On the political side, there’s a small council meeting where Aegon forcefully rejects the idea of dignity in favor of revenge. On the action side,...

“House of the Dragon” Season 2 is about to soar onto screens soon.
After Season 2 was first unveiled at Ccxp in Sao Paolo in December 2023 with a teaser, and later released viral dueling trailers, the season of the dragon is almost upon audiences. Season 2 will not have a time jump like in Season 1, and instead solely focus on former besties turned step-family Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent (Olivia Cooke) as they both battle for the Iron Throne.
Per the official synopsis, after the death of King Viserys I (Paddy Considine), an undeniable rift has grown between his daughter Rhaenyra (D’Arcy) and wife Alicent (Cooke), after their close friendship as teenagers. A rift that’s now a full-blown civil war.
The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” and is set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.”

The Game of Thrones finale left fans shocked as well as divided, particularly when it came to Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) descent into madness and destruction. While many were left questioning the character development and unexpected shift in behavior, the showrunners and the director have provided some insight into the reasoning behind Daenerys’ actions.
A Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R.R. Martin have long been beloved by a cult following. As a result, the HBO adaptation of the series achieved enormous mainstream success. With a remarkable cast, Game of Thrones was groundbreaking visually and deeply political. But season 8 disappointed a lot of fans when it came to the abbreviated but much-anticipated conclusion.

The first spin-off to Game Thrones, House of the Dragon, which debuted in 2022, was a major success for the IP, and its second season is slated to premiere sometime this summer. But the series, helmed by showrunner Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, wasn’t completely faithful to George R.R. Martin’s works, as the duo took their fair share of creative liberties.
Interestingly, the decision to stray away from the books, especially in King Viserys Targaryen’s case, improved upon the book, which left Martin wishing he’d written the character that way in the books.

Forget what that other show said — winter is over, and things are heating up. The trailer trailers for Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” is here to prepare fans for a June 16 premiere, nearly two years after the first season debuted on HBO.
HBO on Thursday revealed two trailers for the second season, one for each side of the Targaryen Civil War. Are you Team Green or Team Black?
“House of the Dragon” is just one of the countless projects delayed by 2023’s Hollywood strikes, but it also happens to be a production behemoth that requires months of postproduction and editing even under ideal circumstances. Season 2 was first announced at Ccxp in Sao Paolo in December of 2023 with a teaser trailer.
Following the death of King Viserys I (Paddy Considine), an undeniable rift has grown between his daughter Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and wife Alicent (Olivia Cooke), after their close friendship as teenagers.

HBO was built on the back of showrunners such as David Chase, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and Jesse Armstrong but is now facing a new dilemma involving directors.
Drama boss Francesca Orsi lifted the lid on the “consistent tussle” over who is charge of a series as more and more “esteemed” directors move into television.
Orsi, speaking at the Series Mania event in France alongside Jane Tranter, boss of Doctor Who producer Bad Wolf, said that high-profile directing talent want to be the “final arbiter” on the network’s originals.
“One point that’s been very tricky for us is esteemed directors coming in and wanting to be showrunners and the final arbiter of a project, when HBO has been built on the backs of writers and our showrunners,” she said.
She added that film directors are used to complete control.

What fans witnessed in the final season of Game of Thrones was not something to cherish for the makers of the beloved show. Many fans especially felt the lack of action from Ghost, Jon Snow’s loyal direwolf, and more so from the Night King.
The Night King from Game of Thrones
In a podcast interview, director Miguel Sapochnik, known for directing key episodes like Hardhome, Battle of the Bastards, talked about the expansive approach of The Long Night. And that revelation came as a surprise, especially considering the scale of the episode’s structural design.
Suggested“Should not be done”: Fans Accuse Game of Thrones of Milking Money as New Spin off Becomes the Last Thing They Want
Speaking about the role of the Night King, Sapochnik revealed that the leader of the White Walkers was originally intended to play a more prominent role in The Long Night.

Season 2 of House of the Dragon will premiere on HBO/Max in June, said Jb Perrette, head of global streaming & games for Warner Bros. Discovery.

He didn’t give a specific premiere date. HBO and Max content chief Casey Bloys last said in November that the season would be coming in early summer. Warner Bros. Discover CEO David Zaslav confirmed during the February 23 earnings call that Season 2 would premiere in Q2.

House of the Dragon is officially returning to HBO next summer.
The second season of the Game of Thrones spinoff will air in early summer 2024, as long eyed by the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned network.
The news was confirmed by Casey Bloys at an HBO event in New York this morning, where members of the press saw the first trailer for the second season.
The show, which has finished filming and is currently in post-production, was largely able to continue filming during the summer as it has a largely British cast under Equity contracts rather than SAG-AFTRA ones.
Elsewhere, Bloys said that the hope is for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, its latest GoT prequel to start shooting in the spring.

“Our approach was embrace and expand,” reveals production designer Jim Clay about the designing the world of HBO’s epic “House of the Dragon.” For our recent webchat he adds, “There’s a huge fan base there and there would be an expectation from that fun base to continue the feel and be familiar with the world. We wanted to recreate that familiarity and then expand it into our own extended world. We had leeway as ‘House of the Dragon’ is two centuries before ‘Game of Thrones,’ so there’s a little bit of flexibility there. But we wanted the audience to feel they were in the same show, whilst establishing our own show.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

The only way to kick off a prequel to Game of Thrones is to bring in the big gun — namely, a yellow dragon named Syrax.
The very first introduction to HBO’s House of the Dragon was through a young Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) riding her beloved steed with abandon over the skies of King’s Landing. High above the Red Keep, she is free of drama: no one is trying to take away her birthright.
Too bad she had to land.
The series’ co-creator Ryan Condal had a lot to accomplish in the very first episode of HBO’s much-anticipated prequel, based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood novel.

Over his two-decade career, Paddy Considine has played cops, ex-cons, priests, architects, struggling actors, union organizers and rock band managers. But when his agent told him that Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik wanted him to play King Viserys I Targaryen in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series, “House of the Dragon,” he couldn’t quite believe it was real.
“I said, ‘Who’s turned this down?’ Because I’m cynical that way,” he says. “My agent was like, ‘I assure you, they’re just coming to you for it.’”
Part of Considine’s disbelief was due to his feeling that the industry at large had only ever seen him as the working-class striver he made his name playing in the 2000s, in films such as “In America,” “My Summer of Love” and “Cinderella Man.”
“I felt like I couldn’t break free from it,” he says. “I was happy to act.

"House of the Dragon" managed to somewhat ease people's reservations about "Game of Thrones" after that show's horrendous final season. What's not to like about a harrowing tale of backstabbing and political intrigue about people in power who fight over petty things like a fancy title, a shiny crown, and a very uncomfortable chair, all while their subjects suffer regardless of who is in charge?
Unfortunately, in rather shocking, out of the left field, absolutely unpredictable news (note the heavy sarcasm), it appears the people in charge of "House of the Dragon" are disregarding the current Writers Guild of America strike, and thinking only about profit and power, with no care for their subjects. Co-creator and executive producer George R. R. Martin confirms the dragons are crossing the picket line, and "House of the Dragon" is set to still film season 2.

The first season of "The House of the Dragon" — HBO's "Game of Thrones" prequel that takes place roughly 200 years before the events of the original series and centers around Westeros' political machinations/family drama surrounding the dragon riders of House Targaryen — ended in homicidal fashion in October 2022.
The show became HBO's most-watched season 1 finale of all time, and tees up a second season that showrunner Ryan Condal has promised will bring us the spectacle of war.

"Game of Thrones" prequel series "House of the Dragon" became one of the buzziest TV events since, well, "Game of Thrones" when it aired in the second half of 2022. "House of the Dragon" was so successful, in fact, that HBO officially renewed the series for a second season after just one episode of the first installment aired on Aug. 21, 2022.
Though fans are expecting a long wait for season two, the good news is HBO announced on April 11 that production has officially begun! "'House of the Dragon' has returned. We are thrilled to be shooting again with members of our original family as well as new talents on both sides of the camera," cocreator and showrunner Ryan Condal previously said in a press statement. Game of Thrones was one of the biggest episodic TV shows of all time. The fantasy world not only broke records for HBO, but it set the stage for a major media franchise that would start immediately after GoT went off the air in 2019. Several spinoff shows were announced, and the first of those shows, House of the Dragon, debuted on HBO in August 2022. The show became a hit, cementing the franchise’s status as a pop culture phenomenon. In short order, a second season was greenlit – and with the recent announcement that the second season has begun production, fans are learning more about what the new season of House of the Dragon will include and when they can expect to see it start streaming on HBO.

The civil war between the Targaryens won't get as much screen time next year.
Deadline reports that the episode order for House of the Dragon Season 2 has been cut to eight episodes, which is two less than House of the Dragon Season 1's episode count.
The decision did not come from HBO, the outlet reports.
Instead, ten episodes were planned for the second season, but the arc has changed, leading to script rewrites, and the creatives have landed on an eight-part season.
With the decision, the outlet reports that a major battle and other plot points previously planned for the second season have been moved to House of the Dragon Season 3.
The third season has yet to land a formal pickup at HBO, but it's moving in the right direction, and there's a good chance the third season renewal will come sooner rather than later.

Exclusive: The upcoming second season of HBO’s House of the Dragon will consist of eight episodes, two fewer than Season 1 of the Critics Choice Award-winning Game of Thrones prequel. It is part of a long-term plan for the show, which includes HBO mulling a green light for a third season, I have learned.

The Mother of Dragons can't quite bring herself to watch HBO's hit "Game of Thrones" prequel "House of the Dragon" - even though it's all about Daenerys Targaryen's ancestors. In a recent interview with Variety, Emilia Clarke revealed why she hasn't tuned in to the series, even though she's absolutely rooting for everyone involved.
"It's too weird. I'm so happy it's happening," Clarke explained. "I'm over the moon about all the awards . . . I just can't do it. It's so weird. It's so strange."
She continued, "It's kind of like someone saying, 'You want to go to this school reunion that's not your year? Want to go to that school reunion?' That's how it feels. I'm avoiding it."

After two years away from the spotlight, the Golden Globes returned in earnest on Tuesday (10 January).
The awards ceremony, organised by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), has spent the past two years embroiled in controversy over diversity and “ethical lapses” in its business conduct. After the HFPA implemented changes to the make-up of its voting body, and instituted a new ethical code of conduct, many of the high-profile actors who had boycotted the Globes returned for this year’s ceremony, which was televised on NBC.
The night, hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael, threw up few surprises when it came to winners. Pretty much all of the films expected to succeed – including The Fabelmans, The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once – walked away with multiple prizes.
Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical drama The Fabelmans bagged two of the biggest awards of the night: Best Motion Picture – Drama, and for Best Director.

Any diversity analysis of the Golden Globes should note that the “diversity controversy” it was embroiled in over the past two years was less about the results (#GlobesSoWhite was never a trending hashtag) and more about the composition of its presenting organization, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The big takeaway from the February 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation that made headlines around the world was that the HFPA had no Black members among its 87-person body; in a post-murder of George Floyd world, that omission was seen as unforgivable, and essentially every major Hollywood publicity firm — which had long held their noses and tolerated the organization’s various tacky, ethics-skirting practices when it came to their celebrity clients — boycotted the 2022 awards show, which was not televised by its broadcast partner, NBC.

The ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel series ‘House of the Dragon’ managed to do what its sequel couldn’t – it clinched a top TV series award at the 80th Golden Globes. It was named Best Drama Series as it beat out the other nominees in the category including AMC’s ‘Better Call Saul’, Netlix’s ‘The Crown’ and ‘Ozark’, and Apple TV+’s ‘Severance’.
The series executive producer, Miguel Sapochnik accepted the award in the company of stars Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke.
Recalling the relief that the makers of ‘House of the Dragon’ felt when the prequel debuted, he said: “It was really heartwarming to know that we actually tread in the footsteps of ‘Game of Thrones,’ because that was one really good show.”
Miguel admitted he didn’t think the show would be victorious.
While he did not say who he believed would win, he praised ‘Severance’.

House of the Dragon scored its impressive Best Drama Series win for its debut season, which began airing last August. Director Miguel Sapochnik took the stage at Tuesday’s Golden Globe Awards alongside the show’s stars Milly Alcock and Emma D’arcy to accept the trophy.
“As you can tell, we didn’t think we were going to win so I didn’t get ready,” Sapochnik said. “This is amazing. I’ve got to say Severance is awesome. I love that show. If I could have made House of the Dragon like Severance,...

HBO’s House of the Dragon has something its predecessor, Game of Thrones, doesn’t: A Golden Globe win for best drama series.
The prequel series beat out the final seasons of Better Call Saul and Ozark, Netflix’s The Crown (a two-time past winner) and Apple TV+’s Severance for the award at the 2023 Golden Globes on Tuesday. House of the Dragon‘s win for its first season is also the first series win for the HBO franchise at the Golden Globes. Despite five nominations for best drama (and four Emmy wins), Game of Thrones ended its run on HBO without a series trophy at the awards.
Season one co-showrunner and director Miguel Sapochnik accepted the award at the ceremony — though he’s no longer with the show. Sapochnik left the series after production wrapped on season one, citing the grueling three-year process to bring House of the Dragon to life.

Miguel Sapochnik accepted the award alongside actors Milly Alcock and Emma D’Arcy, who played two versions of Princess Rhaneyra, and admitted he didn’t think the show would be victorious.
While Sapochnik did not say who he believed would win, he heaped praise upon Severance.

The 75th annual Directors Guild of America Awards will announce nominations for the television categories Tuesday, January 10. Voting opened December 9 and runs through Friday, January 6. Awards will be given out Saturday, February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. For more on the film ceremony, head to IndieWire’s Awards Calendar.
The Directors Guild Awards tend to have some interesting quirks, especially when it comes to the TV and Documentary categories. Just last year, the organization filled its Drama Series category full of “Succession” episodes, proving when directors love a show, they really love it. Though the list of Documentary nominees often has crossover with the Oscars, last year was also an example of how TV-specific projects like Raoul Peck’s HBO docuseries “Exterminate All the Brutes” can break in too.
Add in rules about how shows need to be a DGA signatory, or the director Hwang Dong-hyuk a DGA member,...

House of the Dragon Showrunner Departed After HBO Refused to Let His Wife Serve as Producer (Report)
House of the Dragon was a breath of fresh air for fans of Game of Thrones when it premiered in 2022.
By the end of the season, fans were left in shock when it emerged that co-showrunner and director Miguel Sapochnik was bowing out ahead of Season 2.
Details were scarce at the time about why Sapochnik was leaving, but a bombshell new report in Puck is shedding light on the situation.
The outlet reports that the co-showrunner exited "after a protracted standoff over his wife and her involvement in the show."
Sapochnik's wife had a presence both on and off-screen during House of the Dragon Season 1.
Alexis Raben played Talya in several episodes and was one of the series' producers.
When the second season was ordered, Sapochnik wanted Raben to join the producing team for the second season, Puck reports.
However, HBO was not fond of the idea because of Raben's lack of experience.

"House of the Dragon" lost one of its strongest connections to "Game of Thrones" last summer, when "Thrones" director Miguel Sapochnik announced just over a week after the show's premiere that he wouldn't be returning as co-showrunner for season 2. At the time, Sapochnik's exit was thought to be amicable, but a new report from Puck (via IndieWire) has revealed that there's apparently a lot more to the story.
Sapochnik, who directed several epic episodes of the flagship series including "Hardhome" and "The Battle of the Bastards," worked behind-the-scenes of the prequel series as a director, executive producer, and co-showrunner of the first season. He worked closely alongside fellow showrunner and series co-creator Ryan Condal, who assumed sole showrunner responsibilities in the wake of Sapochnik's exit. This is all common knowledge, but Sapochnik also had another connection to the series that fans may not have been aware of: his wife, Alexis Raben,...
