DiscriminationThe practice of putting dark makeup on fair-skinned actors has existed from Malayalam cinema’s black-and-white days, and refuses to die down even now.Revathy / musiczonemovies, Tovino / Instagram, Sheela / empirevideo Towards the end of December last year, Malayalam actor Tovino Thomas shared stills from a new film, in which he looks unnaturally dark. It might not have seemed unnatural if his face was not so well-known, the makeover done exceptionally well. The look is for a special project called Adrishya Jalakangal, he wrote, directed by Dr Biju, in which he plays a ‘nameless young man’. It triggered a not-so-heated discussion on the propriety of darkening faces of fair-skinned actors to play dark-skinned characters. Not at all a new practice in Malayalam cinema, and by the looks of it, not one that is dying down any time soon. “But Tovino is not playing a dark-skinned character in the film. It is...

Director Sasi Kumar had acted in Subramaniapuram and Nadodigal. There was news that Sasi Kumar was invited for a dinner by Sridevi at her Mumbai’s residence and that he will be directing Sridevi’s daughter in a Tamil film. When asked Sasi Kumar about this, he said,” I have seen Sridevi in her films only.
I have not seen her in person. She has not invited me for dinner and neither had she requested me to direct her daughter. This news is a blatant lie. I was shocked when I saw this news in the media. I don’t know who is spreading such rumors.”...

Actor Vimal made his debut with Sasi Kumar’s ‘Pasanga’ and has gone ahead of many places now. The actor has been acting in three films at the same time while his other project ‘Kalavani’ is ready for release.
‘Kalavani’ is directed by newcomer Sargunam and is produced by Nazir under the banner of Sherali Films. As known earlier, Nazir is none other than the manager of Manirathnam, Madhavan and Trisha.
His maiden production is all slated for next month’s release and Vimal has been cornered for his overconfident gesture now. It seems that the actor is now demanding to insert the title credit as ‘Vimal Nadikkum’, which means ‘Vimal in’ before the film’s title.
When approached the closer sources, they said that there is nothing in asking out for certain things as he has the ability to perform well.
It’s fine and good until the actor...

The Norway Tamil Film Festival, running from Feb 6th to 9th has proved to be a great hit. Promoted by the local Tamil community in Oslo, which numbers over 10,000, the festival was inaugurated by Kollywood directors Sasi Kumar, Mysskin, Sp Jananathan, and Samudrakani.
Amongst the films shown at the festival were Poo, Anjathey, Pokkisham Subramaniapuram, Pasanga, Nadodigal Mayandi Kudumbathar, Peraanmai, E, Yogi and Nandhalala. The most sentimental of these films is Poo in which the wonderfully evocative Parvathi Menon is eternally in love with her cousin Srikanth. She loves him so much that she is even happy for him when he marries a rich woman and becomes an engineer whilst she remains a poor village girl. Only later, when she realises he is heartbroken an unhappy does she break down and express her love for him.
Perhaps the most well-known of the films at the festival, however, was festival favourite Subramaniapuram starring Jai and Swathi.

Chennai, Multilingual film actor Kamal Haasan Thursday slammed the critics who say that Oscar winning film "Slumdog Millionaire" showed India in a bad light. "I am tired of hearing allegations about 'Slumdog Millionaire' showing India in a bad light instead of rejoicing over the achievement of A.R. Rahman and Resul Pookutty," Haasan said at the audio launch Wednesday of "Pasanga" a children's film being by Sasi Kumar. "Director Danny Boyle shot on location and did not create a set to depict Mumbai's underbelly. Further, foreigners see the slums of India's financial capital first and then its skyscrapers." "If good films are made and showcased, bad films will fade away naturally," Haasan added. According to the matinee idol, the showbiz's ...
