JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

The year 1990 was a pretty decent time for a trip to the movies, especially if you’re a self confessed gore-hound, like yours truly. There’s nothing better than sitting down in a packed movie theater, or even at home with the pet cat or a similarly cherished human, to watch some carnage on the screen. Tom Savini’s Night of the Living Dead was a fun remake of the 1968 classic, while we also got the likes of It, Tremors, Child’s Play 2, Gremlins 2, Predator 2 (there’s a theme forming here…) Killer Crocodile 2. Ok, maybe not that last one. Also, if you’re a fan of Stephen King adaptations, the year also brought the ankle smashing Misery with Cathy Bates in full on psycho mode, plus the outlandishly bad, in a good way, Frankenhooker, replete with all of its soft-core pornography and grisly images. Which brings us...

2024 marks the 40th anniversary of one of my favorite entries in my favorite franchise: the Friday the 13th sequel Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter – and to mark the occasion, the folks at Gutter Garbs are selling a very cool Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter T-shirt! An image of the shirt can be seen at the bottom of this article, and it’s available for pre-order at This Link. Shirts are expected to ship out around May 5th. They’ll only be selling it for a limited time, so if you want it, get your order in.
Directed by Joseph Zito from a screenplay by Barney Cohen (with Bruce Hidemi Sakow receiving story credit), Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter has the following synopsis: The body count continues in this vivid thriller, the fourth — and final? — story in the widely successful Friday the 13th series. Director Samuel Gonzalez Jr. (The Retaliators) is paying tribute to the slashers of the 1980s with Stiletto, and Bloody Disgusting has scored some more exclusive imagery this week.
In the upcoming horror movie, “A year after the grisly murder of a local exotic dancer, the victim’s sister, Lyric [Gigi Gustin], searches for the serial killer responsible as he stalks and kills his favorite dancers on the night of the anniversary.”
Preview the film with exclusive images above and below. And stay tuned for a trailer.
The mask worn by the film’s slasher, dubbed The Stiletto Killer, was created by Jason Baker. Famous for designing the mask that Ethan Hawke wore in The Black Phone, Baker is the owner of Callosum FX Studios, which is the creative brainchild of legendary special effects master Tom Savini and renowned artist and effects creator Jason Baker himself.

Scott Derrickson is set to direct a new adaptation of Davis Grubb’s classic 1953 crime novel, The Night of the Hunter.
The Night of the Hunter tells the twisted story of Harry Powell, a serial killer who poses as a preacher and marries a widow in order to get his hands on her deceased husband’s hidden fortune. Unfortunately, Powell’s new stepchildren, John and Pearl, grow suspicious and quickly become his targets. The novel was previously adapted in 1955 with Robert Mitchum starring as Powell and delivering one of his very best performances. Although the film is now considered to be one of the best of all time (and one of my personal favourites), it received negative reviews upon its release. Acclaimed actor Charles Laughton made his directorial debut with the film, but he took the failure personally and never directed another movie again.

In 2019, the documentary of 80s horror In Search of Darkness became an instant hit with horror fans. Now, a beautiful coffee table style companion book is available and is a must-own for all fans of one of horror’s greatest eras. The book is a walk down the horror aisle of the best mom and pop video store in the heyday of VHS, featuring full color photos, poster art, insightful essays and more. More than just a nostalgic throwback, In Search of Darkness is the kind of book I wish I’d had back in my years as a burgeoning horror fan but is also satisfying for the film fanatic I have become in the years since.

We told you earlier this year about Stiletto, an upcoming horror movie from director Samuel Gonzalez Jr. (The Retaliators) that’s being described as a throwback to the early slashers of the 1980s. We now have an exclusive first look at the film’s villain, “The Stiletto Killer.”
The killer’s mask was created by Jason Baker, famous for designing the mask that Ethan Hawke wore in The Black Phone, and owner of Callosum FX Studios, which is the creative brainchild of legendary special effects master Tom Savini and renowned artist and effects creator Jason Baker himself.
Baker tells Bloody Disgusting in a statement, “Creating the killer’s mask for Samuel Gonzalez Jr. & Gigi Gustin on Stiletto was an absolute blast. I personally drew so much inspiration from the script. The film is a morbidly beautiful mixture of beauty and carnage. And that was the mindset we used in the design.

What made you want to get involved in the film industry? I have always loved movies, since I can remember. When I was a kid I thought I wanted to be an actor but I eventually found that I enjoyed writing more so I pursued that. After having a couple of scripts produced I decided to take it to the next step and started directing. Filmmaking is definitely something I’ve always been passionate about.
From script–to–screen, how close did Horny Teenagers Must Die! come to its original vision? Pretty close. There were some issues we ran into during production that forced some changes. One scene was completely cut from the script due to the loss of a location, and a couple scenes were added after the initial shoot in order to help with some character development. Overall though, the final movie is probably 85% as it was written.

The George A. Romero classic Dawn of the Dead (get it Here) is a film that can actually reasonably celebrate its 45th anniversary in two separate years. While its premiere was held at the Cannes Film Festival in 1978 and a cut of the film that was put together by co-financier Dario Argento for non-English speaking countries was given a theatrical release in Italy that year, the cut Romero put together for English-language speaking territories didn’t make its way to screens in the United States until ’79. So whether you’re celebrating Dawn of the Dead‘s 45th anniversary in 2023 or 2024, or both, you’re still doing it right. Red Band Releasing is looking to bring Dawn of the Dead back to the screen in the U.S. and Canada this year, and have sent out a message to fans, telling them that if they want to see the movie on the big screen,...

When college athlete Alan Mann is left wheelchair bound after a tragic accident, his world contracts into one of soul crushing depression and impotent rage. Abandoned by his girlfriend and left in the hands of an unsympathetic nurse who cares more about her pet parrot than her patient, Alan’s wretched life is changed for the better when he is gifted a capuchin monkey named Ella. Ella is trained to help Alan with day-to-day tasks, in essence replacing his paralysed limbs. But when Ella starts feeding off Alan’s darker impulses and revenge-filled dreams, things start to become deadly for those around him.

We told you earlier this week about Stiletto, an upcoming horror movie from director Samuel Gonzalez Jr. (The Retaliators) that’s being described as a throwback to the early slashers of the 1980s. Bloody Disgusting has now exclusively learned that makeup effects legend Tom Savini and his creative partner Jason Baker designed the killer’s mask for the film!
The duo most recently designed the mask for Ethan Hawke’s sinister “The Grabber” in box office hit The Black Phone, which is getting a sequel from Blumhouse in Summer 2025.
Baker tells Bloody Disgusting in a statement, “Creating the killer’s mask for Samuel Gonzalez Jr. & Gigi Gustin on Stiletto was an absolute blast. Back in October, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions announced that The Black Phone 2 will be receiving a theatrical release on June 27, 2025, marking the “launch of a sinister new franchise.” Soon after, it was revealed that the sequel will see the return of Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon) as Finney Shaw, Madeleine McGraw (Secrets of Sulphur Springs) as Finney’s sister Gwen, Jeremy Davies (Justified) as their dad Terrence, and Miguel Mora, whose only previous credit is The Black Phone, as Robin, a friend of Finney’s who was killed in the first movie. Plus, yes, Ethan Hawke (Moon Knight) will be reprising the role of the child-killer known as The Grabber. The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson had said he would only return for a sequel if Hawke did as well… and after Hawke was confirmed to be returning, we learned that Derrickson will indeed be directing The Black Phone 2.

All the way back in 1982, Stephen King and the late great George A. Romero collaborated on the first Creepshow film, an anthology-based homage to the horror comic books of the 1950s. In the intervening years it has become a cult classic, a film remembered fondly by most. It is, even all these years later, still a wonderful movie. 2019 saw Creepshow return, but this time as an anthology television show that aired on the horror streaming platform, Shudder; and when that was announced I was immediately excited, being a big fan of Creepshow and Creepshow 2 for that matter (but the less said about aert three the better). Premiering on September 26th, the first season of Creepshow featured six episodes, with two separate tales to be found in each of those episodes.

In World Wrestling Entertainment, the period from July 22, 2008, to March 22, 2014, remains known as the "PG era," owing to how Vince McMahon adjusted the content to achieve a TV-pg rating after the TV-14 fare in the so-called "Attitude" and "Relentless Aggression" eras of the 1990s and early-to-mid 2000s. (via Sportscaster)
WWE had caught up with Hollywood, where a similar wave of chlorine had washed over mainstream cinema and sanitized dozens of projects including "Live Free or Die Hard," "Terminator Salvation," "Hancock," and "Fired Up." These films and many more were stripped of violence, swearing, and sexuality in order for the MPA to grant the studios a PG-13 rating and access to the lucrative teen demographic. Such money-mindedness proved bad enough for the action and comedy genres, but it was arguably even worse for horror filmmakers, who risked self-censorship unless they worked within the thriving "torture porn" fare of "Saw" and "Hostel.

Before he became known as the sicko behind the "Terrifier" franchise, writer, director, and editor, Damien Leone was just a 12-year-old kid studying documentaries about the "Thriller" music video and legendary makeup artist Tom Savini. As Leone told Dread Central, "Those two VHSes were the first time I ever saw makeup artists creating monsters and zombies." He says he watched the behind-the-scenes footage around age eight, and was teaching himself to emulate them by age 12. Decades later, he ended up responsible for the makeup behind one of the creepiest monster designs in recent horror history: Art the Clown.
Seemingly immortal serial killing clown Art first slashed his way into fans' hearts back in the 2013 anthology "All Hallows' Eve," but his first headlining (and head-chopping) act came in 2016's "Terrifier." More and more remakes. So many remakes. Not all are good, some would even say that most remakes are trash. However, some are good, some are great even. This leads us to this movie, the remake of Maniac (watch it Here) released to the general public in 2013. While some hated it and with reason, others loved it, also with reason. The film is one of those that made changes that worked for the story and helped bring it to the new audience, who then turned around and saw the original. Well, some of them did. However, this remake didn’t exactly hit it big at the box office and it still seems to be finding its audience.

Grindhouse is one of the most influential box office failures of the 21st century. Despite grossing a paltry $25.4 million at the box office on a budget of around $60 million, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 love letter to exploitation cinema has managed to spawn four spin-off movies — Machete, Machete Kills, Hobo with a Shotgun, and now Thanksgiving— in addition to reintroducing a vintage aesthetic that has been mimicked by countless other throwback movies.
Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof each have their merits — the former plays like a satirical pastiche of nonstop action, while the latter is more indicative of genuine exploitation fare — but Grindhouse is more than just a double feature. It’s an experience, complete with faux aging to recreate the look of beat-up film prints along with vintage interstitials and retro-inspired trailers for nonexistent movies.

In the original Creepshow film, Joe Hill played Billy, a boy who got in trouble with his strict father (played by Tom Atkins) for reading a Creepshow comic book, so it's especially fitting that Joe Hill is teaming up with Jason Ciaramella and Michael Walsh to return to the eerie world of The Creep in the new one-shot comic Creepshow: Joe Hill’s Wolverton Station.
A fleshed-out adaptation of a short story by Hill, Creepshow: Joe Hill’s Wolverton Station will be unleashed on readers beginning March 27th from Skybound and Cartel Entertainment, and we have a chilling look at preview pages and cover art (including eye-catching variant covers by Gabriel Rodriguez and Maria Wolf) ahead of its release!

Being one of Stephen King‘s children, author Joe Hill has a connection to the Creepshow franchise that goes back to its very beginning – in fact, Hill was in the original, classic 1982 film (watch it Here) that was written by King and directed by George A. Romero. He’s the kid in the wraparound segments. Decades later, Hill’s stories By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain, Twittering from the Circus of the Dead, and Mums were brought to the screen in episodes of the Creepshow TV series on the Shudder streaming service. And now another one of his stories, Wolverton Station, is getting the Creepshow comic book treatment. The one shot comic book Creepshow: Joe Hill’s Wolverton Station is set to reach store shelves (and digital stores) on Wednesday, March 27th.

A lot of filmmakers have attempted to create a new horror icon for the next generation, and most have failed rather miserably. "Terrifier" director and special effects artist Damien Leone has managed to usher in a fresh wave of blood and terror with his creation, Art the Clown. The enormously successful sequel, "Terrifier 2," was designed and crafted from the ground up with a ragtag FX team, where most of the gloriously gory set pieces were done almost exclusively by Leone and producer Phil Falcone. To achieve the amount of viscera needed to send even the most hardcore gorehounds heading for the aisle, there were some very special ingredients involved to ensure the maximum amount of gross-out potential.
Throughout horror history, there have been countless recipes for blood that have been used, including but not limited to Hershey's Chocolate Syrup flowing down the drain in Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" and...

Horror has come into its own in the 21st century. This is not to say that the genre has ever not been one of the most interesting and creative in the long history of cinema. Since nearly the beginning of the art form, using moving images to scare audiences has been a gateway for aspirin filmmakers to break into the industry—or for even veterans to creatively something about the greater world by painting a landscape of anxiety.
Nonetheless, the 21st century (particularly beginning in its second decade) has brought a renewed appreciation for scary movies’ abilities to speak to audiences with more than just “boo.” With that in mind, we at Den of Geek have polled our staff and collected the below list of what we generally consider to be the best chillers of the fast quarter-century or so. Enjoy.

There’s something wonderfully nerve-rattling about a “survive the night” horror scenario, whether it’s a handful of strangers trying to fend off crazed zombies in “Night of the Living Dead” or a group of sarcastic Gen Z friends suspecting each other of murder in “Bodies Bodies Bodies.”
Here are some of our favorite entries in this subgenre, where the weapons are improvised, the stakes are life and death and there’s no guarantee anyone will get out alive.
We did not include movies that take place over a few days (like “Battle Royale”) or movies that aren’t streaming right now, like “Ready or Not.”
Night of the Living Dead (1968) Continental Distributing
George Romero’s low-budget chiller, in which the dead come back to life and prey on the living, still packs a wallop more than 50 years later. Ben (Duane Jones) takes charge as shellshocked people shelter inside an isolated farmhouse…...

Stand-up comedian / actor Bill Burr just made his feature directorial debut with the Netflix-released comedy Old Dads (you can read the JoBlo review at This Link), which is cool and all… but here on Arrow in the Head, the horror side of the JoBlo Network, we’re more interested in hearing Burr’s opinions on horror films. That’s why it caught our attention when YouTuber James Whale Bake Sale made a video to go with a clip from Burr’s podcast Monday Morning Podcast in which the comedian discusses the horror classic Friday the 13th – and goes on to explain why he stopped watching horror movies.
The video can be seen at the bottom of this article, and over the course of its five minutes he admits that the final jump scare in Friday the 13th really did scare the hell out of him, says that the franchise...

It still feels like we're living in some kind of alternate universe after "Terrifier 2" managed to defy all logical expectations to become one of the biggest indie horror hits of all time. Director Damien Leone is also an accomplished special effects artist, and he ups the ante in the sequel to the nth degree. Riding on the wave of blood and success that the last film provided, "Terrifier 3" is poised to be even gorier, more irreverent, and increasingly offensive in the best possible way. Somehow, Art the Clown and his gleefully demented ways have captivated horror hounds that miss the era of the 1980s when luminaries like Tom Savini were rockstars.
The combination of a compelling neo-slasher icon and elaborate practical effects proved to be box office gold for the sequel, which went on to make over 15 million dollars against a budget of just $250,000. The mostly crowdfunded follow-up...

Urban legends are mostly just that, the stuff of legends. They can inspire some people to do horrifying things and create urban legends of their own. Very often, these stories get the movie or show treatment whether they hue close to anything factual or not. One of the most famous examples of this urban legend which has a serial killer acting out some of the most famously told tales. Often movies that use the “inspired by” tag don’t have much to do with their source material like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre being merely inspired by Ed Gein. What happens when a legend inspires a movie and then the real story comes out years later?...

Romero classic Dawn of the Dead (get it Here) – and to celebrate, Regal Cinemas theatres across the United States are bringing the film back to the big screen! In Sean S. Cunningham's 1980 slasher flick "Friday the 13th," Kevin Bacon plays a camp counselor named Jack who meets a memorable end. Jack and his girlfriend Marcie (Jeannine Taylor) enjoy a zesty round of marijuana and coitus while, unbeknownst to them, the corpse of their friend Ned (Mark Nelson) is stored in the ceiling above them. Marcie leaves to take a shower, and Jack lays back on the bed to relax and have a toke. A drop of blood lands on his brow. Jack is momentarily confused. His confusion doesn't last long, however, as the hand of a mysterious killer -- possibly the presumed-dead Jason Voorhees -- pops up from under the bed and grabs him by the forehead. An arrow pushes up from underneath the bed, puncturing Jack's neck from behind. The arrowhead emerges from his throat, and blood spurts up onto his face. Jack dies wearing a startled expression.

It’s Friday the 13th, and what better day could there be to compile a list like Friday the 13th Movies Ranked? While this list is all in good fun, I have to admit that I found it to be surprisingly difficult to put together. That’s because the Friday the 13th franchise is my favorite of all franchises and I love every one of these films. Ranking them was like trying to rank my major internal organs. Some may work better than others, but I need them all! I struggled to decide which order to put them in, and ended up listing them based on which ones I would most like to watch at any given time. So here they are, listed from “Yes, put that movie on right now!” to “Sure, okay, let’s watch it.” Check it out, then let us know how you would rank the...

"Friday the 13th" wasn't originally intended to go on to manifest multiple murderous sequels featuring Jason Voorhees as a machete-wielding madman. The famed hockey mask didn't even make it into the films until "Friday the 13th Part III." No, the initial killing spree at Camp Crystal Lake was carried out by Jason's mother, Mrs. Pamela Voorhees, played by the illustrious Betsy Palmer.
Rather famously, Palmer wasn't exactly thrilled initially to be participating in a fairly low-rent horror film surrounded by young, up-and-coming starlets whose acting experience paled in comparison to her rather impressive filmography dating back to the Golden Age of television during the early '50s. The budget for the first "Friday the 13th" didn't really allow for a big marquee name, and Palmer wasn't even the first choice to play the role. Quinn Monahan’s Spooktactular!, in many ways, is the origin story of the modern American Halloween Haunt. Through interviews, news reports, and archive footage the documentary tells the story of SpookyWorld, an infamous Halloween attraction like no other in the early 1990’s that laid the groundwork for seasonal mainstays like Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights.
Back when the best you could in October was go on a $10 Hayride through a tame scene of witches of scarecrows, SpookyWorld set the farmland of rural Massachusetts on fire with an independent theme park designed to scare your paints off. From its humble beginnings to its nationwide success, Spooktacular! charts the rise and fall of America’s first horror-themed attraction as told by the people who lived to tell the tale…

If you grew up on the East Coast, you may have heard of (or even visited) Spooky World. Started in Berlin, Massachusetts in 1991, it was properly the first of its kind. A large-scale haunted attraction that opened its doors every October to horror fans and lovers of Halloween. I grew up in the Midwest so Quinn Monahan's new documentary Spooktacular! is my first introduction to the park itself, though I certainly grew up experiencing the reach of its impact.
