Just prior to the season finale episode, which will be released tonight on AppleTV+, the show Shantaram starring Charlie Hunnam has been axed by the streaming service. Stantaram is based on the lengthy 900-plus page novel by Gregory David Roberts and had a huge production with the ambitious, epic scope of shooting across two continents. Both of which had been impacted by the Covid pandemic.
The series started filming its first season, but production came to a pause in February 2020 when the pandemic was taking shape. Since the show filmed in multiple countries, production was not able to resume until May 2021 for the remaining ten episodes of the season. Deadline reports that the show hadn’t quite taken off as much as the streaming service’s more popular titles, such as The Morning Show and Ted Lasso.

Charlie Hunnam's return to the Sons of Anarchy universe might happen sooner than you think.
Deadline reported this week that the star's TV comeback vehicle, Shantaram, has been canceled after just one season.
The cancellation comes just ahead of its first season finale.
No reason for the cancellation has been given, but the show hasn't reached the level of success as some of its Apple TV+ counterparts.
Many of the streaming services still keep viewership statistics under wraps, and the expansive nature of Shantaram certainly makes us think it was an expensive series to produce.
The show is described as "a hopeful cinematic love story coupled with a thrilling epic adventure that follows one man's journey to redemption through a country that changes his life."

Actor Charlie Hunnam-starrer series ‘Shantaram’ will not be returning for a second season.
Its Season 1 finale, released tomorrow, December 16, will serve as a series finale, reports ‘Variety’.
Based on the Gregory David Roberts’ epic, 900-plus-page novel, Shantaram was an ambitious, big-scope undertaking, shot across two continents, which was impacted by the pandemic.
The series had shot two episodes before pausing filming in late-February 2020. Because of its expansive nature requiring filming in multiple countries, the series did not resume production on the remaining 10 episodes until May 2021.
‘Shantaram’, which hasn’t generated the level of buzz that some of Apple TV+’s popular titles have, follows Lin Ford (Hunnam), who escapes a maximum-security Australian prison, reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of 1980s Bombay, gets entangled with a local mafia boss and eventually uses his gun-running and counterfeiting skills to fight against the invading Russian troops in Afghanistan. The season finale for Apple TV+‘s original series Shantaram is slated to arrive on December 16, and in the exclusive clip above, things look to be getting heated between Charlie Hunnam‘s Lin Ford and Gabrielle Scharnitzky’s Madame Zhou. The footage showcases Lin and Zhou face to face with each other, one has a bag presumably full of money, while the other is holding captive Karla (Antonia Desplat) and Lisa (Elektra Kilbey). Zhou begins the negotiation with hostile words, teasing Lin that his love for Karla may be one-sided. “To be honest, it’s hard to tell,” Lin whispers coldly. “Either way, you have something I want; I have something you want.” When someone yells that there’s nothing in the bag, Lin replies, “It’s not about what’s in; it’s about what I took out of it.” He then gains control of the tradeoff by demanding...

Apple TV+ just released the official trailer for Shantaram, a new drama based on Gregory David Roberts’ bestselling book and starring Charlie Hunnam. The new trailer was accompanied by a batch of photos from the 12-episode season which premieres on October 14, 2022.
Apple TV+ will air the first three episodes on October 14th followed by new episodes on subsequent Fridays. The season will wrap up on December 16, 2022.
Charlie Hunnam says that although the first photo Apple TV+ released from Shantaram featured him riding a motorcycle, this series has nothing else in common with Sons of Anarchy. And his character, Lin Ford, is dramatically different from Jax Teller.
“I thought that was very cheeky that Apple released that image as the first image,” said Hunnam in an interview with EW. “I’m on a motorcycle in the show for approximately two minutes maximum over the course of 12 hours, so I hope people...

USA Network appears to be exiting the scripted market.
The latest casualties at the cable network are Treadstone and The Purge.
They are both spinoffs of wildly popular movie franchises, but neither set the ratings alight upon their launches.
Treadstone is ending after just one season.
The series explored the origin story and present-day actions of a fictional CIA black-ops program known as Operation Treadstone — a covert program that uses a behavior-modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly-superhuman assassins.
The series follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously 'awakened' to resume their deadly missions.
The program breaks down these assassins' personalities, erases their memories, and eliminates their moral code so they can effectively kill targets around the world. Treadstone's legacy was present and begins in an East Berlin incident that transpires in 1973.
This involves John Randolph Bentley (Jeremy Irvine), one of the program's agents, who escapes his Soviet captors.

The Svod service will launch the series in over 200 territories outside of the States in the new year following its debut on the NBCU-backed cable network on October 15.
