TV shows can’t last forever. And the longer a show is on, the more likely it is that it’s closer to its series finale than not. Take, for example, the NCIS franchise. It’s already said goodbye to one spinoff, and NCIS is going into its 20th season and Los Angeles into its 14th. Could either end in 2023? “We hired a fantastic writer named Marco Schnabel a couple years ago and he was asking me, ‘When are we gonna get our pickup?’ And half-jokingly, I said this to him, but also half-seriously, ‘What do you mean the pickup? … There has always been NCIS, there will always be NCIS,” executive producer Steven D. Binder tells TV Insider. “And that’s just how we feel. Now that may not be, but when it’s been 20 years, it’s hard to imagine that this year will be the year it ends.

Exclusive: Dollhouse star Eliza Dushku is returning to series television as the female lead in Mike Robe's TNT drama pilot Bird Dog, while D.B. Sweeney has landed the lead in Dean Devlin's hourlong TBS pilot Brain Trust. Bird Dog is a mystery fashioned around an unlikely partnership of two cops who happen to be father and daughter. It centers on Gail McGrath (Dushku), who followed in her father's footsteps in becoming a police officer but had little else in common with him. She left the big city she had grown up in to move to a small Pacific Northwestern town where she was patrolling the streets until her dad, a NYC cop, showed up on her front doorstep to join her as her new partner. Now this father-daughter team, call sign "Bird Dog," is being put to the test -- not only in solving crimes, but with each other.

We'd all like actors and actresses to be held accountable when they turn in a crummy performance, but Jessica Alba -- who, let's face it, ain't no Meryl Streep -- wants you to know that all of her awful performances were due to shoddy directors, most notably first-timers. In a new interview with Elle Magazine, Alba admits to starring in a host of craptacular movies from Good Luck Chuck to The Love Guru, blaming the fact that both films make us want to gauge our eyes out with a plastic spoon on first-time directors Mark Helfrich (Good Luck Chuck) and Marco Schnabel (The Love Guru). Oh, but her blame game doesn't stop there. Alba then moves on to Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer director Tim Story, whom she said made her want to "stop acting" after he told her that her...

TBS have announced that they are moving forward with Brain Trust, a brand new pilot from Leverage and Independence Day producer Dean Devlin.
Brain Trust (currently a working title) sees Dean Devlin team up with Marco Schnabel – the man behind TNT’s The Librarian movies – on a new comedic detective show that follows:
…Detective Billy Doyle, whose career and life have hit rock bottom after he accidentally ends his partner’s career. Doyle’s life gets turned around, however, when a recent murder case gets unexpected and unconventional help from three hyper-smart geniuses from a private think tank. If Doyle can survive the chaos and keep these new partners in line, they just may be the antidote to resurrect his career and, ultimately, his life.
Brain Trust is being produced for Us cable network TBS by Devlin’s Electric Entertainment.

TNT and TBS have ramped up their development by taking a chance on four new projects from producers and writers like Dean Devlin (Leverage); Kenneth Biller and Mike Sussman (Star Trek: Voyager), and Allan Loeb (The Switch, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps). TNT ordered three pilots: An update of TV’s long-running Dallas, which will focus on rivals J.R. and Bobby Ewing, from Cynthia Cidre (The Mambo Kings); Perception, a drama from Biller and Sussman that’s about an eccentric neuroscientist who help the Feds solve complex cases, and the untitled Loeb project, a drama based on The Rabbit Factory by novelist Marshall Karp.

Golden Raspberry Award Foundation has announced the "winners" of their 29th Annual Razzie Awards on Saturday February 21, and "The Love Guru" came out in front of the pack, nabbing the most kudos on the night. Who cares about the box office? Narnia sure doesn't! Prince Caspian might have struggled to put an impressive number of arses in seats, and gotten unceremoniously dumped by Disney, but someone still wants those Pevensie kids. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Fox 2000 is picking up the tossed aside The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and wants to get it in theaters by the holiday season in 2010. Talk about a risky proposition. The last one wasn't only over budget -- it brought in a sucky box office. Who in their right mind would take on a struggling series and try to bring dragons and other beasties to the big screen while saving pennies in a bad economy? The warning bells, they are a-ringing.
Meanwhile, The Thing is coming back to attack! But have no fear -- the man behind this might just make this a desirable remake. Variety reports that Ron Moore...

Fox Atomic must have just gotten its allowance.
The Fox division has just purchased Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka's original screenplay "The Sitter," with Michael De Luca on board to produce. A day earlier, the company bought a comedy pitch called "Girlfriend in a Coma" from Marco Schnabel and Larry Stuckey.
Both are edgy, youth-oriented comedies, which would plant them in the same demo as future releases "Miss March," due in March, and the Diablo Cody-penned "Jennifer's Body," a horror-comedy starring Megan Fox that's set for September.
De Luca has "Brothers," from writer David Benioff and director Jim Sheridan, in production. He most recently produced "The Love Guru" and "21."
Gatewood and Tanaka, repped by UTA and Industry Entertainment, are working on "How Soon Is Now" for Scott Stuber and "Overachievers" for 21 Laps, both at Universal. The duo also wrote "Hairstyles of the Damned," which producer Nick Wechsler is developing at Sony/BMG.

• Marco Schnabel and Larry Stuckey will write "Girlfriend in a Coma" for Fox Atomic. The film is described as a satirical high school comedy about an unlikely romance. Schnabel most recently directed the awful "The Love Guru." Stuckey is currently writing "Little Fockers." (The Hollywood Reporter)
• John Doyle is set to direct Horton Foote's "Main Street," an ensemble drama about "a diverse group of residents of a small, economically moribund American city facing the consequences of change." Doyle is a British theater director. (Variety)
• Jose Padilha is in talks to direct Universal's thriller "The Sigma Protocol," which is based on Robert Ludlum's novel. According to the Hollywood Reporter, "the movie will update the novel, use the current economic climate and make the protagonist a Wall Street type who specializes in the economy of catastrophic events, known as 'black swan events.

You might have thought that, having inflicted the absolutely godawful The Love Guru upon the world (without even asking for permission, which was doubly rude), that Marco Schnabel would have been banned from even seeing any more movies, let alone writing or directing them.Yet Hollywood now appears to be working on some sort of three strikes and out policy, and so it’s just been announced that Schnabel will team up with that other comedic powerhouse, Larry Stuckey, to write Girlfriend In A Coma.Smiths fans will, of course, instantly recognise the title of one of Morrissey & Co’s finest singles, which in turn inspired the Douglas Coupland novel of the same name. Schnabel and Stuckey’s film, though, would seem to be unrelated, given that it’s, apparently, a satirical high school comedy which focuses on an unlikely romance (could it be a romance between a guy and...

These days I find myself constantly disappointed by award shows. The winners are rarely the most deserving, the ceremonies are dull as hell, and the running times can only be measured by astronomy.
But one of the few award shows I do give a hoot about has just announced its nominees…
I give you the 29th annual Razzie Awards…
For those not in the know, The Razzies are the anti-Academy Awards that “honor” the worst films/performances/etc. of the year. The big winner/losers for last year were Basic Instinct 2 (anyone even see this besides me and Razzie judges?), Little Man [shudder] and Lady In The Water.
Here are the nominees that made you want to kick your own ass for dropping $15 bucks to see them:
Worst Picture:
Speed Racer
Disaster Movie
Meet the Spartans
The Day the Earth Stood Still
High School Musical 3

When the Razzie Awards nominations were announced this morning, it was obvious that voters are really smitten with Mike Myers' "The Love Guru" — it leads with the most nominations (seven), including a worst picture bid. Mike Myers, up for worst actor and screenplay as well as one for producing the picture, was previously in the Razzies race five years ago for "Cat in the Hat," but was underwhelmed by the Ben Affleck-Jennifer Lopez mismatch "Gigli."
In second place with six Razzie bids, including a worst picture nod, is the combo of "Disaster Movie" and "Meet the Spartans," which are grouped together because they're "two films from the same two talent-free writer/directors, both featuring essentially the same cast," says the Razzie press release.
By comparison, it looks like Paris Hilton's "The Hottie & the Nottie" was robbed! It only has five nominations despite being ranked by IMDb...

The Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies) are a time honored tradition of non-excellence recognizing the worst movies had to offer last year. In 2009, the 29th annual ceremony will be held on February 21, 2009, the traditional day before the Oscars are awarded.
Last year the big “winner” was Lindsay Lohan’s I Know Who Killed Me with a record-breaking eight Razzies.
This year the Razzies are recognizing not just the lack of any discernible talent, but people sick of the repeat awful offenders. Mike Myers, M. Night Shyamalan, Paris Hilton, Uwe Boll, Eddie Murphy, and the spoof movies.
Mike Myer’s The Love Guru lead the garbage with seven nominations including “Worst Picture.” It will compete with the actual worst movie of the year (in my opinion) The Happening. It picked up four nominations, including “Worst Actor” for Mark Wahlberg (also nominated for Max Payne).

Update: Apparently this is a list or "suggestions" and the nominees will be announced later this year. Do not take these to be official nominations. The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation has announced their nominees for th 2009 Razzie Awards and yet again you can spot the not-so-subtle attempts at humor and the obvious nature of the entire list. The best part of the whole thing is that the way these awards are decided are based on member votes, which means people actually spend - at a minimum - $20 to submit votes and say films such as Disaster Movie and Meet the Spartans weren't any good. I wonder, did these people actually go spend money on these movies or are they voting purely on the idea that these movies must be bad? Because if they actually paid to see all of these movies that may be as sad as the award show itself.

Mike Myers is back on the big screen in Marco Schnabel’s “The Love Guru,” and while most of the nation’s top critics hate the new comedy to death, let’s see what online reviewers have to say about it.

• Cinema Blend’s Josh Tyler slapped the film with one and a half stars out of five, saying he pretty much hated the script and Mike Myers’ main character, the Guru Pitka. Here’s part of what Josh has to say about it:

After the Austin Powers trilogy, there was a sense that comedian Mike Myers had elevated his game. Working with a character in three movies, he evolved the series from slapdash skits into real movies that had connective tissue and continuing characters. Love Guru is a regressive step in the extreme. Not only does the film stumble badly from one skit to another, the skits themselves have too much dead air. Neither Myers nor a group of hesitant actors -- who seem more like an endless number of sidekicks than supporting players -- show much confidence in the material. They seem to deliver lines or perform bits so they may quickly duck the rotten tomatoes surely headed their way.
Two film comedies go head-to-head this weekend, Love Guru and Get Smart, which is anything but smart on the studios' part. But the real question is which is the worst?
Quite possibly, Love Guru will out-awful Get Smart. Myers' name should ensure a respectable No. 2 finish, but all bets are off the following weekend.
The basic problem with Love Guru, as it was for Get Smart, is the filmmakers never define the central joke. Myers plays Guru Pikta, the Number Two Near-Eastern Self-Help Specialist. (Deepak Chopra is Number One.) This inspires all sort of spoofs of self-help mumbo jumbo, inane mantras, Bollywood dances and Beatles-era costumes. These almost get lost, though, amid serendipitous gags involving urination and defecation, elephants, ice hockey and penis size. Not to mention Verne Troyer, the little person who played Mini-Me in two Austin Powers films, who here is the butt of endless size jokes as well.
Oddly, Myers entrusted his first film with a new character to a rookie director, Marco Schnabel, who directed second unit on all three Austin Powers films. Schnabel not only lacks visual flair and the ability to pull together a style to link the skits, but he is probably too young and inexperienced to help Myers edit himself. When, say, one in four gags hit with any force, there is a need for serious editing.
Guru Pitka is hired by Toronto Maple Leafs owner (Jessica Alba) to reunite her star player (Romany Malco) with his wife (Meagan Good), who is shacked up with Los Angeles Kings goalie, Jacques Le Coq Grande (Justin Timberlake), which on the eve of the NHL's Stanley Cup Finals has sent her player's game into the toilet. This tissue-thin plot gets interrupted for flashbacks to Pitka's guru classes at an Indian ashram by an exalted cross-eyed guru played by Ben Kingsley.
A good actor is a terrible thing to waste, but this profligate film totally marginalizes Kingsley, Alba, Good and Malco. Timberlake fairs not too badly because he has a fun caricature to play, a Quebecois goalie with a huge crush on Celine Dion and an even larger physical endowment. The only actor who really scores is news talk show/comic Stephen Colbert, who plays a drug-addled, sex-addicted hockey broadcaster. He is absolutely hysterical.

Marco Schnabel is reteaming with Mike Myers as director of Paramount Pictures' self-help comedy The Love Guru.
Schnabel, a former below-the-line crew member mostly as a second unit director, worked with Myers on all three Austin Powers films. Love Guru will mark his directorial debut.
The film, which Myers co-wrote with Graham Gordy, centers on a self-help guru named Pitka who is called upon to solve a couple's romantic problems. Like Myers' Austin Powers creation, Pitka was workshopped by Myers at several theaters in Manhattan.
Mike De Luca is producing alongside Myers.
Pam Abdy is overseeing for Paramount, which is eyeing an August start date. Love Guru is set for a June 2008 release.
"This team is a dream come true," De Luca said. "I'm thrilled. I have wanted to work with Marco Schnabel for years. He is insanely talented."
Schnabel is repped by CAA, 3 Arts Entertainment and attorneys Adam Kaller and Nigel McNulty.

Kate Walsh is in negotiations to join Will Ferrell and Robert Duvall in Universal Picture's Untitled Will Ferrell Soccer Movie. Marco Schnabel is making his feature directing debut, and Jimmy Miller is producing. Ferrell stars as the coach of his young son's soccer team who is forced to go up against his ultracompetitive father (Duvall), who has a new son on the opposing team. Walsh will play Ferrell's sensible, outspoken and put-upon wife, who reacts strongly when the needs of her family are ignored as Ferrell takes on the coaching duties. The project is written by Leo Benvenuti and Steve Rudnick. Walsh appears onscreen as Sandra Oh's lover in Under the Tuscan Sun and is perhaps best known as Drew Carey's girlfriend on The Drew Carey Show. Her other credits include The Mind of the Married Man and The Fugitive. She is repped by Innovative Artists, Tiffany Kuzon at Evolution and attorney Rick Jenow of Stone Meyer & Jenow.
