Hurray for the Riff Raff dropped by CBS Mornings’ studio to perform three tracks from their new album The Past Is Still Alive for “Saturday Sessions.”
For the mini-concert, singer-songwriter Alynda Segarra — who uses they/them pronouns — delivered the first three songs from the recently released LP, “Alibi,” “Buffalo,” and “Hawkmoon,” accompanied by NNAMDÏ on bass.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Segarra broke down The Past Is Still Alive, an album informed by grief, like the death of Segarra’s father and, as on “Alibi,” a childhood friend who had become addicted to heroin.

Giorgio (Josh Segarra) and Izzy (Crystal Fox) each find romance while Hana (Ally Maki) and Father Reuben (Damon Gupton) attempt to discover the purpose of the machine. When most people think of actor Josh Segarra, they likely think of the lovable himbos he’s become known for. From Lance in The Other Two to Pug in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law to Manny in Abbott Elementary, and even Danny in Scream VI, Segarra’s recent roles may not all be the sharpest tools in the shed, but there’s no denying that they’re all kind and loyal at their core. But before Segarra became known for playing these appealing dudes, he took a turn as Arrow’s scariest villain.

One week before Alynda Segarra’s father died, he mailed them a package. It was a box of all the music Segarra had sent him over the span of nearly 20 years, ever since they’d left their childhood home in the Bronx to travel the country. Everything they’d recorded, from burned CDs for street and jazz bands they’d played in, to records from Segarra’s own band of more than a decade, Hurray for the Riff Raff, was in there.

It’s been a decade of reinvention for Hurray for the Riff Raff, the recording moniker of singer-songwriter Alynda Segarra. After years of street-busking and self-releasing acoustic records, Segarra cemented their status as an old-timey roots standard-bearer on 2014 Small Town Heroes. But over the course of their past two albums–2017’s The Navigator and 2021’s Life On Earth–Segarra chipped away at that artistic identity by exploring other musical lineages (everything from alt-pop to punk to Nuyorican folk-poetry) while carving out a truer artistic self. Their new album, The Past Is Still Alive,...

Hurray for the Riff Raff released single “Hawkmoon,” the last preview of their forthcoming album The Past Is Still Alive, due Feb 23.
The new track is described as a “rebellious road song and stirring remembrance of the first trans woman that Alynda Segarra ever met,” according to a press release, and arrives alongside by a music video complete with bank robberies, middle-of-nowhere diner, motel room, and outlaws on the run in New Mexico.
“‘Hawkmoon’ is a song about running away — a trans song, and memories of the first trans woman I ever met.

“Alibi,” the opening track of Hurray for the Riff Raff’s The Past Is Still Alive, embraces the sense of invincibility that comes from facing down the very worst that life can throw at you. “You don’t have to die if you don’t wanna die/You can take it all back in the nick of time,” Alynda Segarra sings. The arrangement, featuring organ and bursts of tambourine, imbues the song with a sense of resilience and liberation—a relentlessly forward-moving spirit that recalls the music of Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, and Waxahatchee.
The rest of The Past Is Still Alive is likewise informed by recollections of both a friend’s addiction and the passing of Segarra’s father, charting a determined, if sometimes uneasy, journey to make peace with uncomfortable truths. “Snake Plant” alternates between pleasantly mundane memories to direct addresses to a friend battling addiction (“I know...

“Abbott Elementary” Season 3 was delayed by five months — known in our world as the 2023 Hollywood strikes, but also known and acknowledged, surprisingly, in the supersized premiere episode, “Career Day.” The explanation? The Abbott Elementary documentary crew got robbed after a teachers’ night out, returning only after they were able to save up the money for new equipment.
The episode, written by Quinta Brunson and directed by Randall Einhorn, opens not during the traditional September start of the school year, but in February — matching the audience timeline and treating them to the show’s first time jump. In February, Janine (Brunson) is working for the school district and barely speaking to Gregory (Tyler James Williams), which instantly invokes major intrigue.

As the first season showed us by the end, there’s a lot more than meets the eye when it comes to Giorgio (Josh Segarra) on The Big Door Prize. The Apple TV+ drama follows those in a small town after the Morpho machine mysteriously appears, promising to reveal everyone’s true potential. Season 1 ended with a message on the machine asking if they were “ready for the next stage.” What is that exactly? Here, Segarra ponders that, looks back at Giorgio’s journey so far, and shares his hopes for Season 2. What stands out to you about Giorgio’s journey over the first season? Josh Segarra: I’m very fortunate in these characters that I get to play. Giorgio, to me, he’s a former New York Ranger. I’m a Rangers fan. He’s a former athlete; I’ve always wanted to play an athlete on screen. And...

Josh Segarra has been that guy for too long. Now, it’s time to get to know the actor who truly is everywhere.
So far this year, the breakout star of “The Other Two” has appeared in “Scream VI” playing “hot neighbor guy” love interest turned key survivor, entered the MCU with Disney+ series “She-Hulk,” as well as led TV series “The Big Door Prize.” To track Segarra’s screen roots back further, he can even be spotted in Amy Schumer’s “Trainwreck” as the (very memorable) Staten Island hook-up.
Segarra isn’t just that guy anymore: He’s almost synonmous with his iconic lovable “The Other Two” character Lance Arroyo, whose relationship with longtime girlfriend Brooke Dubek (Heléne Yorke) provides some of the best laughs in the critically acclaimed series.

Josh Segarra has been consistently working in film and television and earning a living as an actor for well over a decade. And while he insists he’s “just trying to stay busy,” his career received a shot of adrenalin over the past year that found him cast as a regular on three series: the comedy “The Other Two” on Max, the first-year Marvel Universe superhero drama “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” on Disney+ and the freshman comedy “The Big Door Prize” on Apple TV+. That’s in addition to his having a role in this past spring’s “Scream VI” horror flick. Does Segarra feel like he’s broken through to a new level? “It’s very nice and very flattering to hear that,” he says, “but honestly I’m not thinking about that. Josh Segarra could be Hollywood’s biggest fan. The actor, who has been working steadily for the past 15 years — first with day gigs like a scene in the Homeland pilot shortly after his graduation from NYU, later with recurring roles on Chicago P.D. and Orange Is the New Black — is effusive, bordering on glowing, about the business. He remembers details about every guest spot he’s ever done, every executive or star who’s helped him to where he is today. Claire Danes was “so sweet and kind” and did crossword puzzles on set; John Leguizamo was “awesome”; Kevin Bacon offered some banter about the New York Giants to calm some nerves. “It hasn’t been lost on me when somebody can tell I’ve got stars in my eyes and takes the time to give me a hug,” he says. “It’s why I’ll never stop being a fan of this business.

Apple TV+”s The Big Door Prize comes armed with a deceptively simple elevator pitch. Based on a book of the same name by M.O. Walsh, this 10 episode series ponders “if a nondescript machine in a corner store promised to tell you your ultimate destiny, would you want to know it?”
At first, you might be thinking “sure, why not?” That concept is not markedly different from what a psychic or boardwalk fortune teller might guarantee. And in the case of the butterfly-branded “Morpho machine,” receiving your reading would actually be far cheaper at only $2. It’s all just fun and games, now who has four quarters?
But what if seemingly everyone in your small American town who utilized the Morpho machine appeared to be fundamentally changed by the experience? What if dozens of your peers completely rearranged the details of their lives to better fit its ultimate vision for them?...

While we weren't looking, "Scream" newcomer Josh Segarra has slowly been infiltrating every corner of the entertainment industry. Comic-book TV fans might know him as Adrian Chase/Vigilante in the now defunct CW "Arrowverse," or the show-stealing supporting character, Pug in "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law." When he's not fighting alongside superheroes, he's exuding wonderful "golden retriever" energy as Lance on HBO Max's "The Other Two."
In "Scream VI," the newest reinvention of the meta-horror slasher franchise, Segarra plays Danny, the handsome, supportive neighbor to protagonist Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera). Though it's a small role in a stacked ensemble full of likable, fresh faces, his charisma goes a long way. At this point of the franchise, we know better than to trust the love interest. And yet, Segarra's effortless and disarming charm makes it a little difficult -- not just for Sam, but for the audience too.

“Scream VI” star Josh Segarra thinks the next “Scream” should be a musical: “Maybe Ghostface has some operatic talents we don’t know about?”
The sixth installment of “Scream” made its theaters-only premiere March 10. This time around, four survivors of the Ghostface murders leave Woodsboro behind for a brand new beginning in New York City. But things take a turn for the worse when they realize their new lives come with an all-new killer.
During an interview with Inverse, “Scream” franchise newcomer Seggaro pitched an idea for “Scream 7”: “If they could find the way in for a Scream musical, make the audience laugh and also be a little scared? Let’s go!” Segarra suggested. “Who knows? Maybe Ghostface has some operatic talents that we don’t know about.”

I don't think there has been a superhero television series with an as expansive legacy as "Arrow." Premiering on The CW in 2012, the series not only ran for impressive eight seasons but spawned the "Arrowverse," a shared television universe. "Arrow" led to the creation of "The Flash," "Legends of Tomorrow," and more, with these DC Comics-inspired series regularly crossing over with one another. The show stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, a playboy who returns to his hometown of Star City after presumingly being stranded on a remote island for five years, as the vigilante Green Arrow.
Initially coming out the gate as a dark and gritty take on the Green Arrow mythos, "Arrow" let itself get weird and leaned into its comic book origins for an entertaining, if uneven, superhero show. There is a wide range of quality across the show's entire run, from its attempts to visibly...

"She-Hulk: Attorney At Law" has ended (for now), and the last Disney+ series in Marvel Studios' Phase 4 line-up certainly didn't disappoint. Setting aside the usual big-picture developments expected of the Marvel Cinematic Universe shows, "She-Hulk" tells a smaller-scale story focusing on the growth of Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany). The nine-episode season showed the journey of Jennifer embracing her newfound powers as a Hulk, offering a different structure and style than the shows that had come before. The series, dubbed a legal comedy, brought a hilarious sense of realism to the greater MCU. The odd and otherworldly clients with everyday problems that She-Hulk represented throughout the season helped to make the massive interconnected world feel a little more human and lived-in.
Moreover, the unexpected trajectory of Jen's story allowed for moments of fourth wall-breaking that made She-Hulk a character that related to the audience with their enjoyment (or frustrations) with the show.

Hulk stories have never been the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s forte, so “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” has its work cut out for it.
The latest Marvel Disney+ series follows practicing lawyer Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) who acquires superpowers after a car accident and ends up living and working as a hulk. Created by “Rick and Morty” writer Jessica Gao and directed by “Marry Me’s” Kat Coiro, the nine-episode series is baseline enjoyable with an adventure-of-the-week structure, but doesn’t meet the potential of a captivating cast, talented writers, and MCU might.
In the comics, Jen receives a life-saving blood transfusion from cousin Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), but the show makes things both simpler and duller: His blood drips into her open wounds after a crash, and she transforms — but with coordination and control well beyond Bruce’s best days as a Hulk, even after 15 years.
