A new batch of classic films have made their way into the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry this week, including Henry Selick’s The Nightmare Before Christmas!
This year’s new lineup of films that have been deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” also includes James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day!
The National Film Registry says of The Nightmare Before Christmas, “The king of dark whimsy, Tim Burton won over an even larger (and decidedly younger) crowd with this delightful stop-motion animated offering. Jack Skellington, whose giant pumpkin head rests precariously on top of his rail-thin body, is the king of Halloween Town; one year he dreams of bringing a little Christmas magic to his humble hamlet. Every so often, a long-presumed dead sequel will suddenly spring from the grave like Michael Keaton's "Ghost With the Most" flying out of his coffin in "Beetlejuice." So it was when "Beetlejuice 2" was announced in 2022 following multiple failed attempts at making a follow-up to Tim Burton's original 1988 supernatural comedy. "Beetlejuice" wasn't Burton's first feature (that would be "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure"), but it was arguably the first "Tim Burton film" that established him as a true stylist. It's also probably the horniest, most foul-mouthed movie to snag a PG rating this side of the invention of the PG-13 -- the sort of film you make when you're an outsider hungry to prove yourself and unleash your idiosyncratic, gleefully anti-commercial vision on the industry.
More than 35 years later, Burton has unfortunately become a brand unto himself, his macabre, twisted vision no longer something that makes studios nervous. "Beetlejuice 2...

In a Halloween world where every person is a monster, a vampire, a skeleton, a werewolf, a demon, or a creature that hides under the stairs, who could possibly be a villain? In Henry Selick's 1993 stop-motion animated fantasy "The Nightmare Before Christmas," Jack Skellington is the community's most famous local hero, but he is not a killer. Indeed, Jack seems to be good-hearted (if he had a heart) and secretly longs for romance. The local mad scientist Dr. Finkelstein (William Hickey) can resurrect dead skeletons, but he doesn't want to take lives. Even the two-faced Mayor (Glenn Shadix) is more ineffectual than evil.
The only monster in Halloween Town that truly longs for violence and aches to kill people with his own hands is Oogie Boogie, a.k.a. the Boogeyman (Ken Page). As imagined by the film's designer, Tim Burton, Oogie Boogie is a large, empty-eyed burlap sack full of bugs and snakes.

Tim Burton is clear that a sequel or a reboot of The Nightmare Before Christmas is not happening. In a new interview, the director talks about what he thinks about the idea of the stop-motion film getting a follow-up 30 years after the movie’s debut.
“I’ve done sequels, I’ve done other things, I’ve done reboots, I’ve done all that shit, right? I don’t want that to happen to this. It’s nice that people are maybe interested [in another one], but I’m not,” Burton told Empire.
He continued, “I feel like that old guy who owns a little piece of property and won’t sell to the big power plant that wants to take my land.”
The publication notes that Burton then said in a “grumpy old prospector voice,” “Get off of my land! You pesky little… You ain’t getting this property! I don’t care...

Tim Burton is staying in the Jenna Ortega business, as the ‘Wednesday’ star is currently eyeing a role in “Beetlejuice 2,” TheWrap has confirmed.
The film will be the sequel to Burton’s 1988 comedy classic that also marked his first collaboration with Michael Keaton. He’s expected to direct and Keaton is likely to return as the devious poltergeist-for-hire. Budget and other logistical concerns are still being resolved, so Ortega’s role in the film isn’t a done deal just yet — but if she ends up joining, she’ll be Lydia’s daughter — Lydia is of course the goth teenager from the original film played by Winona Ryder.
If all goes according to plan the film will begin shooting in early Summer in London.

"Let's party!" Strand Releasing has debuted a 2K re-release trailer for a 90s indie dramedy titled Sparkler, made by filmmaker Darren Stein just before he would go on to direct Jawbreaker. It debuted at the 1997 Hamptons Film Festival, only getting a video release later in 1999, but not many people have heard of this. Melba is a Californian trailer-park girl who is said to look for three kings by a phone psychic, and when she meets three guys – Trent, Brad and Joel traveling to Las Vegas, she decides they are those kings and joins them on a trip. In Vegas she meets up with her old high school pal Dottie. The film stars Park Overall as Melba, with Freddie Prinze Jr., Jamie Kennedy, Steven Petrarca, Veronica Cartwright, Grace Zabriskie, Octavia Spencer, Frances Bay, Glenn Shadix, and Sandy Martin. This does not seem as fun as the other 90s classic Vegas comedy Swingers,...

2020 has been a brutal and depressing year, with a raging pandemic affecting every corner of the globe and massive civil unrest arising in righteous response to long-ignored systemic inequities stateside. It makes sense, then, that film fans have opted to prioritize comedy in their home video streaming, away from the tragedy that is real life.
Per Owen Harris at JustWatch, it appears that comedy has been, by far, the most popular genre across the globe. Based on data gathered for 60 countries collated from July through September, comedy films and TV shows rank at the top in popularity among 28 countries — especially in Europe and North America.
Action films rank second in genre popularity, topping streams across 17 countries tracked. Romance and Animation are the preferred genres in Southeast Asian countries for the same time period.

Based on this information, I asked Owen if he might mind doing a bit more digging for me.

Beetlejuice has closed its doors on Broadway, at least for now.
The show’s final bow at the Winter Garden Theatre took place two months early as the theatre closed its doors amid the coronavirus pandemic.
However, a rep for the show, which was nominated for eight Tony Awards, tells People, “Obviously, with the suspension of Broadway through June 7th, this means that Beetlejuice won’t be returning to the Winter Garden Theater, but the musical still has plans to launch a national tour in the fall of 2021 (announced in January).”

There never has been (nor will there ever be) anything quite like Beetlejuice, that inimitable horror comedy concoction hailing from the demented minds of screenwriter Michael McDowell, plus writer/producer Larry Wilson and script doctor extraordinaire Warren Skaaren, filtered through the wacky gothic lens of director Tim Burton.
To celebrate Beetlejuice‘s Los Angeles return to the big screen at the Nuart Theatre at midnight tonight, December 20th, Tfh decided to take a look back at the film’s singular significance 31 years later.
As our tale unfurls, Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) are a fairly bland couple in the throes of (bland) domestic bliss. They occupy a pleasant, spacious house in the leafy suburb of Winter River, Connecticut. Adam owns a hardware store up the road, and enjoys whiling away his free time building a remarkably thorough model replica of Winter River while jamming out to Harry Belafonte songs.

The Teen Titans have proven remarkably flexible since their mid-1960s debut as a collection of sidekicks. They appealed to the young readers with Bob Haney’s laughable “hip” language and as the readership grew up, so too did the members of the team, addressing adult issues with changing times and tastes.
They were propelled from mid-list to top-seller status by the Marv Wolfman and George Pérez run starting in summer 1980. These were teens on the verge of adulthood and had problems and issues that the college-age readership were drawn to. The blend of supernatural, science fiction, and super-heroics meant the stories could, and did, go anywhere.
In 2003, things went full-circle as the more mature incarnation was youthified for younger viewers as the Teen Titans hit the Cartoon Network in a five-season run. This success led to the even younger Teen Titans Go! so all the characters and their conflicts...

Plans are afoot for a sequel to Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. But what made the original so special, and where might the sequel go?
Last week, an extremely cautious Winona Ryder confirmed on Late Night With Seth Myers that a sequel to Tim Burton's beloved 1988 haunted house comedy Beetlejuice was finally in the works. Ryder will be reprising her role as Lydia Deetz, with Burton back behind the megaphone and Michael Keaton, fresh from a career-resurrecting turn in Birdman (2014), again starring as 'the ghost with the most'.
Ryder's announcement was met with the inevitable woops and cheers from Myers' studio audience, but fans of Burton's breakthrough feature will be seeking reassurances that the forthcoming follow-up will remain true to the spirit of its predecessor.

It's not that hard to believe that it's been 25 years since the release of "Heathers," on March 31, 1989.
Really, the movie seems like an artifact from a different era, one paradoxically bolder than our own. It's hard to imagine a movie getting made today that makes fun of teen suicide, schoolhouse violence, and the public grieving process that follows both. "Heathers"'s gleefully gruesome satire made stars out of Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, and Shannen Doherty, launched the careers of screenwriter Daniel Waters and director Michael Lehmann, and created the mold for subversive schoolgirl comedies to come, from "Clueless" to "Mean Girls."
"Heathers" wasn't a hit at first, but it eventually became such a huge cult success that it made lunchroom polls and lines like "What's your damage?" into pop-culture fixtures. Still, as many times as you've seen it, there's still much you may not know about "Heathers," from which other...

Tomorrow "Dark Shadows" will hit theaters, the latest gothic entertainment from director Tim Burton and his muse Johnny Depp. And, as per our review and many others, it's sadly another disappointment; another wonderful-looking, empty picture that seems to have been derived from the filmmaker and his star taking on the kind of film that's expected of them, rather than something to push or challenge them.
But once upon a time, Burton was one of the most exciting filmmakers around, a former Disney animator who moved into the live-action world with an enduring family comedy classic, and went on for a nearly-decade-long run of critically acclaimed box-office hits that established him as having one of the most distinctive, unusual voices in Hollywood. With "Dark Shadows" bumming us out this weekend, we've decided to provide an antidote by examining five of the most essential Burton directorial efforts in the filmmaker's career. Disagree?...

Tremors? Nightbreed? Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat? 976-evil? Are all on the list this year. And though there were not huge horror wins in sound editing through screenplays, the Technical Awards never cease to bring out the horror veterans. Notably Tim Drnec who contributed to such VHS classics as Alien Seed, Destroyer, and Prison won for his work on “Spydercam 3D volumetric suspended cable camera technologies.” An award also shared with Ben Britten Smith and Matt Davis who both also worked on Constantine.
But among all the winners, the Academy also honored some great loses in 2010. And though they mentioned some of our heroes, Dennis Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and Dino de Laurentiis (King Kong), they did not mention Zelda Rubinstein or Corey Haim. But we will in this last section and the others lost to us last year.

"American Idol" takes on the crazy town of Los Angeles, CA Thursday night (Feb. 3), plus the MySpace auditions are in the house. So in "Idol" land it's still 2004? Got it.
That makes sense, since this episode is almost wall-to-wall bad/crazy auditions and that schtick hasn't been funny since then.
Victoria Garrett is the first audition of the night and you can just tell by her crazy outfit from 1984, her God talk and her starry-eyed attitude that she is going to suck. And she does. Why do we have to watch those? Hilariously, afterwards she says, "I let my nerves get the best of me."
This episode's resident J.Lo-lover is Tim Halperin with "She Will Be Loved." The lower stuff is nice, but he doesn't quite have the chops to do the high stuff on the chorus. But the whole narrative of this guy's audition is his love for Jennifer Lopez,...

I avoided including a video of the dinner party scene from "Beetlejuice" in last week's post about the death of actor Glenn Shadix because I thought it was a bit cliche. Good thing, because now I have an even better excuse to feature the clip. News from the UK about "killer shrimp" has caught the attention of the interweb, despite there being even less to fear from these predatory sea creatures than the killer bees everyone was worried about twenty years ago. Still, it made for a fun Best Week Ever post yesterday calling for "Killer Shrimp: The Movie" (starring…...

Glenn Shadix, best known to fright fans as the hilariously pretentious interior designer Otho in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice (pictured above with co-star Catherine O'Hara), has passed away at the age of 58. More after the jump. The Hollywood Reporter gives the word of Shadix's passing. He died Tuesday, September 7, at his home in Birmingham, Alabama. "The actor's sister, Susan Gagne," says the trade paper, "told the Birmingham News he had been using a wheelchair to get around and he appeared to have fallen in his kitchen and hit his head. The actor's website says a memorial will be held Saturday in Birmingham." Shadix also lent his comedic talents...

Glenn Shadix, the strange, sermon-delivery preacher of Heathersand interior decorator and mystic of Beetlejuice, passed away at his home in Birmingham, Alabama Tuesday morning at the age of 58.
In his youth, Shadix struggled to come to grips with his homosexuality, even partaking in "ex-gay shock therapy" at the age of 17, a harrowing ordeal he later described. A suicide attempt, however, led his family to accept his sexuality and for the young man to move on with his life.
His twenties brought him into the world of stage drama, and the actor started his screen career as a Twin Oaks customer in The Postman Always Rings Twice. But it was a few projects later, in 1988, when he became a recognizable face as Otho in Beetlejuice. As the man who made that nice New England home into a monstrosity (before stealing the Handbook for the Recently Deceased and wreaking havoc), Shadix quickly became a king of quirk.

Tim Burton's film "Beetlejuice" featured Alabama native Glenn Shadix as "Otho", an imperious interior designer who was enamored of all things paranormal. Mr. Shadix died Tuesday morning in his Birmingham home. He was 58. Susan Gagne, Mr. Shadix's sister told the Birmingham News thather brother had been using a wheelchair to get around, and he fell in his kitchen and hit his head. Mr. Shadix also was a voice-over actor in "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and appeared in numerous smallscreen series. He was reportedly en route back to Hollywood to audition for a Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon film. Here he talks poignantly about coming out as a gay man, and surviving aversion therapy as a teen:...

Tragic former actor Glenn Shadix was in talks to revive his film career at the time of his death on Tuesday, after he was asked to audition for a role in Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon's new movie.
The Beetlejuice star, who fell and died at his home in Alabama, didn't land the part but the fact that casting directors considered him at all gave him a huge boost.
In his final interview with BlogTalkRadio.com, the 58 year old revealed all about how thrilled he was to almost become the Twilight actor's co-star in Water For Elephants.
Shadix, who retired from showbusiness in 2005 and had only filmed cameos in low-budget projects over the last few years, said, "Whatever happens happens, but at least they saw my work.
"I've been on a sabbatical and I've done a couple of films since I've been in Alabama - I'm doing one on Maui. I'm going again in the summer and (Fox called) out of the blue, and I did two screen tests for two different roles.
"I'm real glad that they thought of me. I've been out of Hollywood for five years, and people think you're dead! I was glad to let them know that I wasn't, and I was pleased with the (screen) test."...

The man who so eccentrically and invasively decorated the Deetz family house in Tim Burton's original cult comedy Beetlejuice has sadly and truly passed into the afterlife. Actor Glenn Shadix who ever so famously portrayed the gothic interior designer Otho in Burton's 1988 film has died at age 58 following a fatal fall at his home in Birmingham, Alabama. Susan Gagne, Shadix's sister told Alabama Local News, "He was having mobility problems, and he was in a wheelchair. It looks like he fell and hit his head in the kitchen, and that's the cause of death." A truly tragic end for a man who enjoyed a fantastic career in both film and television. Aside from his career-making turn in Beetlejuice, Shadix collaborated with Tim Burton a couple more times. The actor not only voiced The Mayor in the Burton produced Nightmare Before Christmas, but also played Senator Nado in Burton's remake...

Sad news for you today, movie fans. Glenn Shadix passed away after he fell and struck his head in his Birmingham, Al home yesterday. The 58-year-old actor worked primarily in theater through the '70s and '80s. I'll be perfectly honest. I never knew Glenn Shadix by name until he died. To me, he was simply 'Otho.' I think he was probably that for a lot of people, as the role of the snooty, flamboyant and trendy interior designer and occult hobbyist in Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice" is surely his most significant. Some may have viewed him as just another character actor relegated to the common moniker 'that guy!,' recognizing his face in "Demolition Man" or "Dunston Checks In." Perhaps some identified his voice underneath his orangutan suit in Burton's remake of "Planet of the Apes," or providing…...

Maybe "Tweedle Dee!" should be the new "Squeeeee!" for excited exclamations. You've probably seen the new images via USA Today and the info on Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland? But I'd like to talk about the cast and the polish. One of the only pluses of mainstays like 'Wonderland' being retold each decade over original work is to see how the different eras and visual artists interpret them.
