When the Cannes Film Festival unveiled its 2017 Official Selection, the lack of a single title by an Indian director marked the second year running that the biggest film industry in the world has been unrepresented in the main lineup (the last Indian movie in the Official Selection was Neeraj Ghaywan’s “Masaan” in 2015’s Un Certain Regard section).
Indian cinema has never been a complete non-entity at Cannes; ever since Chetan Anand won top honors with “Neecha Nagar” at the inaugural festival in 1946, Indian filmmakers have enjoyed some degree of exposure at Cannes, in or out of competition. In the last decade alone, screenings have included features and shorts from close to 30 Indian filmmakers, including Vikramaditya Motwani, who wowed audiences with “Udaan”; Ritesh Batra with his Grand Golden Rail-winning “The Lunchbox”; and Anurag Kashyap, whose “Ugly,” “Gangs of Wasseypur” and “Raman Raghav 2.0” all opened to applause at various Directors’ Fortnights.

Ek Thi Daayan director Kannan Iyer who has taken off on a holiday after the release of his film, agrees with the critics who feel the second-half of the film has gone wrong.
Soft spoken and thoughtful, the director who waited ten years to make his directorial debut says, "Maybe commercial considerations coloured the second movement of the storytelling. To me, the core of the story in Ek Thi Daayan is the relationship between the children and their stepmother who they think might be a witch. I was not interested in the horror or the supernatural elements per se. It was the inherent drama in the theme that interested me. It's always the drama that grips me."
Kannan can't thank his stars enough for discovering the two children Visshesh Tiwari and Sara Arjun. "Pavan Malhotra and Konkona Sen-Sharma who played their parents would have their jaws fall open when they would see the kids perform.

A good storyteller plays with the audience’s mind by using their actual fears – the shadows on the wall, the corners of the room that scare at night, that old lift in the building. Kannan Iyer takes the age old lore of witches and witchcraft and sets it right into our daily modern lives giving us one of the few chilling and superbly shot horror films.
Bobo (Emraan Hashmi) appears to have everything going for him – he is a famous magician, has a sweet girlfriend Tamra (Huma Qureshi) and an about-to-adopt son. Except that he seems to be hearing a voice which no one else can making him impossible to concentrate on anything anymore. He knows that it’s linked to his past; the murder of his kid sister which he can’t remember about. And when he starts recalling under hypnosis about what really happened those many years ago,...

Emraan Hashmi is ready to let the magic begin. And that's meant in quite a literal sense. In Vishal Bhardwaj's Ek Thi Daayan, Emraan plays a magician. And he's not going to leave any stone unturned to ensure he looks convincing performing the magician's tricks. Going the way of Hrithik Roshan in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish, Emraan would be learning magic tricks from one of the foremost magicians of the country before performing them on screen. Says our source from the project's core team, "It's very simple, really. Emraan doesn't want trick photography to be used for his magician's part in Ek Thi Daayan. He wants all the magic tricks on screen to look, to Be, real. Vishal Bhardwaj has decided to hire one of India's topmost magicians, whom we won't like to name at the moment, to teach Emraan some really intricate magical tricks." Mastering the magical...
