A UK print film magazine, and a big one too! Here’s Film Stories issue 49 – an issue going very much beyond the blockbusters.
Introducing issue 49 of Film Stories, where once again we’ve clearly gone mad and produced another 168 page bumper issue. And printed it on nice paper too!
We’re 100% independent, and this issue – as always – we’re celebrating fellow independents. But also: our front cover goes utterly beyond blockbuster film, and gives the whole cover over to indie movies.
We’re really proud of it. We hope you’re going to like it, and we hope you might consider supporting it. Sold primarily via mail order, and popping up in a few WHSmiths stores around the country too, here’s the cover of the new issue…
And inside?

For many actors on successful sitcoms, summer hiatus represents a time to vacation, to recuperate, to maybe pick up a frivolous hobby or two. Simon Helberg, on the other hand, is using his time off from the CBS series "The Big Bang Theory" as an opportunity to cram in as much stage work as humanly possible. The actor will star in a pair of theater productions this season: "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," produced by Reprise Theater Company, and "Doctor Cerberus," a 1980s-set tale of a socially awkward young man who finds solace in horror movies, produced by L.A. Theatre Works for its The Play's the Thing radio series. "It's hard to convince your agents and managers to do theater, because it's not as financially rewarding and it takes up a lot of time," muses Helberg. "So I guess when you have the luxury of being...

Star the pig makes her TV debut on tomorrow night’s Britain’s Got Talent but unfortunately for her owner, a bad case of stage fright ruins the porker’s shot at fame.
Star’s owner tells Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden that her pig ‘does tricks’ but at the first opportunity, Star rushes off stage and proceeds to terrorise poor Ant McPartlin who was waiting in the wings.
Other rubbish animal acts tomorrow night will include a painfully slow snail race and the biggest horse Simon has ever seen who leaves the biggest poo right in the middle of the stage.
A gagging Ant and Dec inform the owner that it’s the first poo we’ve had on stage, with Ant adding “I’ve been close but I’ve always made it backstage in time!”
Eugh!!

Last week, FlashForward returned with a cinematic, emotionally and thematically rich, mythologically substantial two-hour spring premiere. It was an impressive installment that inspired hope at least in this viewer that the under-appreciated, ratings-challenged ABC mystery drama could finish the season strong and perhaps earn another year of storytelling. But two discouraging developments have occurred since then. 1. The ratings report came out, and the numbers for last week's sterling work represented an all-time low for the series. 2. Last night’s episode happened. It was called “Blowback.” And it kinda blew. The word that comes to mind is exhausted. It was as...

The word on the street is that "The Real Housewives of New York City's" resident social climbers Alex McCord and her husband Simon van Kempen may have hit the last rung on the social ladder.
An "inside source" tells the New York Daily News that the couple is in danger of being cut from the fourth season of the hit Bravo show.
"Viewers don't have a positive reaction to them, so they're easily replaceable at this point," The Daily News source says.
The insider goes on to say that the couple doesn't mix well with the other housewives and they'd be Ok with seeing Alex and Simon go. The issue is further complicated by reports that Simon, who is often referred to as "the seventh housewife," wants to be paid the same rate as his female costars. If that's true, Simon is taking the nickname a little too seriously,...

I'm sure someone else has already noticed and publicized this (I'm weeks behind on my web reading... so far behind I have almost no idea what's going on. Where am I?) but I can't get over the fact that there's two Ryan Binghams in the Oscar race this year.
There's "Ryan Bingham", the latest vessel for George Clooneyism in Up in the Air and Ryan Bingham the songwriter/performer who wrote the lovely theme song for Clooney's big Oscar competition "Bad Blake", the latest incarnation of Jeff Bridges. How weird is that?
And which films will find Oscar favor this year in the Original Song category? The category is tinier then usual with stricter rules in place (one of them is that a film can't have more than two song nominated anymore) so all 63 of these songs will have a mighty struggle making it to the short(est) list. I...

A staggering 63 songs have been submitted to the Academy for consideration in the Best Original Song category with a list of artists that span an incredible spectrum. The convoluted, complicated selection process means this number will ultimately be whittled down, however, to anywhere between zero and five nominees. The full rules on the nomination process can be found here.
As usual the list comprises an eclectic mix this year ranging from “Cinema Italiano” from Nine through to songs from the Hannah Montana film and the misfiring “Dove of Peace” from Bruno. Scanning the entrants brings up quite a few pleasant surprises though including, but not limited to, Through The Trees the wonderfully satiric song from Jennifer’s Body and the Jarvis Cocker performed “Petey’s Song” from The Fantastic Mr. Fox (a song which Michael Gambon refers to as “bad songwriting” in the film’s script). The most satisfying nominees...

5…Five!…songs from Hannah Montana The Movie??? Really??? Once again, a category that AMPAS will never take seriously. Then they proceed to leave off the list Mary J. Blige’s song from Precious, “I Can See in Color.” Nevermind that they complete lost me with “The Word Is Love” from “Oy Vey! My Son Is Gay!” Please feel free to leave a comment below if you’ve heard of this one. However, I was thrilled to see two songs from one of my favorite films of 2009, An Education, make the cut, “Smoke Without Fire” and “You Got Me Wrapped around Your Little Finger.” A soundtrack I highly recommend.

If you're young enough to have grown up entertaining the thought that Dick and Dom in da Bungalow is the height of children's comedy, then get yourself on YouTube right now and type in the words, 'Trevor & Simon'. Trevor Neal and Simon Hickson brought anarchic off-the-wall humour to the nation's TV screens via Saturday morning shows Going Live! and Live & Kicking during the late '80s and early '90s. And if you're lucky enough to own the VHS of their 1993 'The Blimey, That's Good! Tour', then you'll understand what we're banging on about - and be the owner of a much sought-after collector's item. They had too many classic sketches to mention them all, but some of the best loved were (more)...

Simon Cowell is set to become the highest-paid TV star in history. The music mogul is in talks with Us TV network Fox to receive a staggering £100 million-a-year deal to appear on hit talent show 'American Idol', a huge increase on his current £25 million-a-year contract. A Fox insider said: "The word went out from on high to pay Simon what he needs. "Without him, the show would be a shadow of itself. And without 'American Idol', we're in the dumper." The struggling network - which makes over £450 million each series from advertising revenue - have already signed host Ryan Seacrest for another three series in a £30 million deal. While Simon is set to...

Remember the old Scouts motto "Be prepared"? Well, actors need to be prepared for auditions. And according to several casting directors and acting coaches, very often they're not. "You hear a lot of 'My agent didn't give me the sides,' " says Erica Daniels, casting director for Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company. "I don't want to hear 'The cat ate my homework.' Actors who make excuses, who don't prepare properly, are self-sabotaging." Chicago film, TV, and stage casting director Claire Simon agrees. When an actor comes in to audition for a play — with the artistic director, director, and playwright in the room — and hasn't even read the script, "I want to poke myself in the eye," she says. "Then I want to poke them in the eye." Not that the problem is peculiar to Chicago. As Rob Decina, casting director for the New York-based Guiding Light, reports, "An actor came...
