Well, it’s finally come, the last issue of Earth 2. The reason Earth 2 and its weekly series Earth 2: World’s End gets reviewed every week is that despite all the bad worlds said about in the last six months, Earth 2 used to be one of the best books coming out of DC. In fact, it was one of the few books that made the New 52 somewhat justified in its existence. Instead of rehashing older stories or making embarrassing changes to characters older than the company that published them, Earth 2 did something different. It build a whole new world from the ground up, embracing its comic book roots by being a series about ordinary...

Well, Earth 2 returns once again and the best that can be said is, it’s not as bad as last time. Granted that’s not saying much, but when a series sets its bar so low it’s subterranean, one should take what they can get.
To its credit, this issue is by far one of the better issues of Earth 2 in a long time. It’s not another trite anthology series about characters who have little to nothing to do with the series. In fact, this issue stars Dr. Fate and Queen Marella, two characters who have had all too little to do in World’s End. Unfortunately, this series doesn’t drop the other problem with the previous Earth 2 entries,...

At this point, reviewing what is in theory Earth 2 seems like a moot point. If the last two issues say anything, it’s that this series is no longer meant to be a standalone title as much as it’s simply tie in material for DC Comics’ weekly book, Earth 2: World’s End. Issue #28 was little short of an origin anthology for the Furies of Apokolips while #29 was a pointless and disappointing side quest with what is by far World’s End’s weakest plot line. It’s depressing to see what was once one of the few series good enough to justify DC’s reboot be turned into event comic tie-in material and abandon the awe inspiring groundwork set by the legendary...

2014 was an incredibly rewarding year to be a comics reader. Veteran creators, like Grant Morrison, Kurt Busiek, and Matt Wagner continued to churn out some of the best work of their career while new creators, like Noelle Stevenson, Babs Tarr, and Tula Lotay had very strong starts. Marvel and DC published their fair share of events, including Original Sin, Multiversity, Spider-Verse, and seemingly a half-dozen Green Lantern crossovers, but they also took risks with new characters like Ms. Marvel, a mysterious female Thor, and the cast of Gotham Academy. Marvel and DC artists went far away from any semblance of a house style from the tapestry-like spreads of Elektra‘s Michael del Mundo, the Silver Age revivals of Silver Surfer‘s Mike Allred and She-Hulk‘s Javier Pulido, and the stylish character designs and Instagram-style layouts of Babs Tarr’s Batgirl among many others.

This month’s issue of Earth 2 does something quite unexpected by focusing on the Furies of Apokolips. A major question that’s loomed over this series since the announcement of World’s End is what role will the Earth 2 main book play in the story. Upon reading issue #28, it’s apparent that the series shall serve as a companion title to World’s End telling side stories that can’t fit within the pages of the weekly book.
The issue is split up into four stories, each about one of the furies of Apokolips and how they came to serve Darkseid. What’s quite the surprise is that eachFury is a native of a classic alien world within the DC universe. Pestilence...

Visual effects firm Framestore is behind the acclaimed space movie, but is UK film making a giant leap, or is funding falling?
After picking up a galaxy of awards, the space thriller Gravity is tipped for further glory at the Oscars on Sunday. The film might look like classic big budget Hollywood, but has a starring role in the British film industry. Almost everything on screen, from the gorgeous images of light bouncing off the earth, the constellations of stars, down to the astronauts' space boots, was conjured up on computers at a studio in Soho. Stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock filmed their space nightmare in deepest, darkest Buckinghamshire.
Tim Webber is the director of visual effects at Framestore, the studio behind Gravity's magical effects. Before he put Sandra Bullock in space, Webber created the rich worlds of Harry Potter and The Dark Knight. But Gravity was the...

This is the time of year when the ComicMix crew starts to firm up our attendance at various comic conventions in the year ahead. It’s a frustrating process because there are a lot of shows and we can’t go to all the ones we’d like to attend.
It also makes me really angry.
Last year was the first in a long time that I went to a bunch of cons. It was fascinating and fun most of the time, but annoying at others. Twenty years after we started Friends of Lulu, there are still remarkably few women invited to be guests at the shows.
This is odd, because there are a lot of women working in the industry, and (capitalists take note) even more buying comics and tickets to cons. Wouldn’t show organizers like to demonstrate to this market segment that they are welcome and valued?...

Batman Noel 1/6th scale figure by Rocco
Some potential details have leaked regarding Ben Affleck's Batman in Zack Snyder's Batman Vs. Superman. There's information on the Batmobile that he'll be driving around and the costume he'll wear, specifically the style of his cowl.
Let's start out with the costume design, which is something we've all been curious about, especially since Snyder has created his own look and style for this universe.
According to Cbm the "current cowl designs resemble the Caped Crusader's look in Batman: Noël. Which is a 2011 graphic novel written and illustrated by Lee Bermejo, based on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. They also explored concepts that looked like Injustice: Gods Among Us designs, but ultimately passed on those because they were too similar to Nolan's costume."

The look of this cowl definitely seems like it fits in with Snyder's universe.

A couple of brief updates on Zack Snyder's "Batman vs Superman" movie at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Batman-On-Film reported the other day that Batman will be sporting a whole new costume and Batmobile for the film, with the latter currently being designed and built by General Motors at the Gm Advanced Design Studio in North Hollywood.
One edict - it will "definitely Not have a military look like The Tumbler from Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy". More likely it'll be some kind of streamlined concept car. Production designer Nathan Crowley, and engineers Chris Culvert and Andy Smith have reportedly been consulting on the designs - not surprising as they were apparently involved in the creation of the Tumbler nearly a decade ago.
As of four weeks ago, the car was still just 'pictures on the wall' so nothing had actually been built yet. It's also said an "old Cadillac" will feature prominently in the film.

A week ago, a source for Batman on Film, informed the site that the Batmobile is being designed and built by General Motors at the Gm Advanced Design Studio in North Hollywood. Their source, stressed that the new Batmobile would not look like the Tumbler, as seen in Chris Nolan's Batman trilogy. According to my source, who I will refer to as, “General Napier,” General Motors Is working on the Batmobile designs, but I was also told that production designer Nathan Crowley, and engineers Chris Culvert and Andy Smith, have been consulting on the designs. All three previously worked on Nolan's Batman trilogy. They were responsible for converting Nolan's "crude" Play-Doh design of the Tumbler into the Lamborghini/tank-like vehicle that it became. My source tells me, ideas are still being tossed around, but don't be surprised if some elements from the Tumbler Are incorporated into the final design.

Los Angeles -- Los Angeles police said Thursday that they will no longer routinely issue news releases or offer immediate confirmation on hoax 911 calls targeting the homes of celebrities.
The announcement comes after several high-profile "swatting" incidents in recent months that have sent emergency responders to the homes of celebrities including Tom Cruise, Justin Bieber and Ashton Kutcher.
The move is intended to deny the publicity that motivates the prank callers.
"We're going to try to reduce and eliminate their recognition," Lapd spokesman Officer Christopher Ngo said.
The department will not immediately confirm the incidents for news organizations either, police Cmdr. Andy Smith told the Los Angeles Times. Media outlets will instead be required to file formal public records requests.
The term comes from the pranksters' desire to have heavily armed special weapons teams dispatched to their calls.
The calls, sometimes made by children, can tie up resources ranging from dispatchers,...

Late last month Warner Bros. released what is arguably their best DC animated adventure in The Dark Knight Returns Part 1, and adaptation of Frank Miller's classic story of the same name. Fans are now eager to see what's in store for them in the consclusion. WB announced today that the first footage from the upcoming release will debut at New York Comic Con, and attached the first still from the film in case you can't wait that long.
Seriously, if you haven't taken the time to watch Tdkr: Part 1, go out and buy it now. I doubt you'll be disappointed with the purchase. It's well worth your time, and in my opinion the best WB has put out in their animated features. Anyway, below is the first image from the upcoming Part 2 (it's not incredibly impressive, but it's got me excited), and the full press release. The release also...

Batman Classic: Fright Club Book Review
You can purchase this book on Amazon.com
About the book: The Joker and Harley Quinn have joined forces with the Scarecrow and Jervis Tetch and are terrorizing the citizens of Gotham City. Can Batman and Robin put the Fright Club out of business or will they fall prey to the madness and mayhem as well?
Our Take: Fright Club is a storybook style Batman book that features the dynamic duo vs. Joker, Harley Quinn and the Scarecrow. The story is charming and the artwork by Andy Smith is fun. He meshes various incarnations of the characters..a more modern Robin with a classic blue and gray bats, Batman: Tas Scarecrow and a more Super Powers Joker and of course the iconic Harley Quinn. This one is a great book for a great price for kids or collectors.

This is Andy Smith's favorite part, when he slips in through the top of the Tumbler -- the Batmobile used in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy -- and fires up the engine. The Tumbler lets out a roar, the floor shakes and the cockpit begins to smell like the inside of a lawnmower. A slight, confident smirk slips across his face that seems to say, Yeah, I am sitting in the driver's seat of a Batmobile. My job is awesome. “I have to say, I love this car, because we built it to do what it does,” said Smith, a special effects supervisor who worked on the Batmobiles in both Nolan's trilogy and Tim Burton's “Batman.” “[The Tumbler] can go over a jump, you can smash it into things, it's just a big chunky piece of engineering and I like that. It can [even] spin on all four tires and do donuts.

The Dark Knight Rises: Batman versus Catwoman
About the Book: There's a ferocious feline in town, and she's out to steal from Gotham's wealthy citizens. Unfortunately, Catwoman makes a mistake when she visits venerable citizen Bruce Wayne and takes Bruce's prized family heirloom. She thinks she made a clean escape . . . but she doesn't know who she toyed with! Our Take: Batman vs. Catwoman is a storybook style softcover book that tells the movie-tied tale of Catwoman and Selina Kyle and her interaction with Batman/ Bruce Wayne. This one has limited spoilers and is a fantastic tie-in with the new film. Andy Smith provides great interior art and the digital coloring really makes it pop! This one is a fun gift for any young batman fan or a fun addition to any adult collection.Image Gallery:

The latest polls in North Carolina show Amendment 1 passing easily, banning both marriage equality and civil unions. The troubling thing is that a significant portion of the population doesn't even know what the amendment does. Some think it actually legalizes marriage equality, and some think it brings about civil unions.
Not helping of course is the National Organization for Marriage, who actually budgeted " $120,000 for a project to locate children of gay households willing to denounce their parents on camera." I'll be sharing oxygen with Maggie Gallagher next week for the second time in two years, and I'm not looking forward to it.
I don't even know what to say about AOL's new Mandatory.

Welcome to the first edition of a new column featuring a Toronto band for every month. We’re pleased to start it off with Army Girls, a two-piece who will release their first Ep, Close to the Bone, on September 13 through the Blocks Recording Club. Army Girls is Carmen Elle and Andy Smith. They’re not new to the scene by any means; Carmen’s been involved with bands such as Donlands and Mortimer (yes, named after a Toronto intersection) as well as Austra, and Andy’s also in Heartbeat Hotel. But the forces have come together to bring us an ear-pleasing new combo.
With Carmen on guitar and vocals and Andy on drums, the pair pack a whopping punch. Carmen’s vocals make her sound like she’s been transported through time to an era of old movies, but she’s got the confidence to take her to another level.

DC Comics isn't just trying to reach out to new readers in comics shops this year. The new trailer for their company-wide "New 52" reboot is going to be shown on TV and in movie theaters in order to appeal to wider masses. That strategy received some support in the Twitter-stream last night, though J.M. DeMatteis thought it looked dark, and Gail Simone called for rougher language.
It was a good night for sketches, too, as Phil Jimenez posted a Wonder Woman piece he made, and Cameron Stewart gave Batman a go using an iPad. Gaze upon their art and learn a thing or two about being British from Warren Ellis after the jump.
Those tweets and more ranked atop the Twitter Report for August 17, 2011.
DC trailer pt. 1: @JMDeMatteis I thought the Dcu was a place filled with hope. The New 52 commercial makes the entire universe seem like Gotham City on a very bad day.

Hopefully these changes are to help contain decades worth of storytelling within 2 hours of screen time, such as in Bryan Singer’s cinema-changing X-Men and Sam Raimi’s true-to-form Spider-Man. Often times it goes horribly awry and comic aficionados lament the ruining of an artform. It is a patchwork of 1,300 snapshots of everyday moments: mangoes, pink Converse sneakers, cupcakes, beer pong, clean laundry, a convertible, and Halloween. With its bright yellow border, the mural is titled "This Makes Me Happy." Aaker points to a photo of a latte, its brown and white foam swirled into the shape of a flower. The froth, she tells me, was her happy moment of that day.

In an excerpt from their book The Dragonfly Effect: Quick, Effective, and Powerful Ways to Use Social Media to Drive Social Change, authors Jennifer Aaker and Andy Smith consider how Facebook's charitable contests and activism groups may be doing more harm than good.
There are many positive aspects of social good--saving lives, spurring medical research, building community--and the potency of the profit made by running something as seemingly benign as a lemonade stand. But what about when things go wrong? Consumers and employees have higher expectations when you focus on social good, and they're not afraid to voice their concerns, which on the Internet is kind of like using a megaphone that can be heard around the world.
Consider JPMorgan Chase & Company, which came under fire for the way it conducted a Facebook contest. One of the biggest online contests ever, the program was designed to award $5 million to charities chosen by anyone on Facebook.

It seems – to me at least – that the third season of Ashes is intent on giving all of its characters a little background and depth before the show comes to a close next month. Last week, we had a cracking insight into the hitherto background character of Shaz; this week, the spotlight was firmly on moustachioed misogynist Ray.
The revelation of his (marginally) troubled past was set against a series of arson attacks during the 1983 general election. Suspicion comes to rest on young firefighter – and Falklands war veteran – Andy Smith, whose experiences on a bombed ship have evidently scarred more than his badly burnt chest. But is he the real perpetrator, or just a victim suffering from post-traumatic stress?
It’s both interesting and commendable that Ashes to Ashes weaves historical accuracy with its storylines, and it gives the show a verve and verisimilitude that it’d sorely lack if...
