The “Nurse Jackie” sequel series is now in development at Amazon Prime Video with original star Edie Falco set to return, Variety has learned exclusively.
It was first reported in 2023 that a “Nurse Jackie” followup was in the works at Showtime from Lionsgate Television, but the project has now moved to Amazon.
The official logline states, “10 years after we left Jackie Peyton (Falco) clinging to life in the series finale, we find her back on her feet in spite of having lost her nursing license. The continuation of her story will find her facing new dilemmas in trying to be good in a world where being bad is often not only easier, but a lot more fun.”
Liz Flahive and Abe Sylvia serve as writers and executive producers on the sequel series, with both having worked as producers and writers on the original series. Sylvia is also attached to direct.

For the first time in nearly a century, The Atlantic magazine will publish a new play: The Ghost of Slavery by Anna Deavere Smith will debut across 32 pages of the publication’s December issue.
The play, the centerpiece of a Reconstruction-themed issue, was posted on the Atlantic’s website today.
The Ghost of Slavery is set in Baltimore and Annapolis in the 1860s and the present, and, according to a description provided by the magazine, explores the power of historical trauma to persist for generations. The magazine describes the play as “a searing drama of great emotional and historical complexity set in two time periods, the effect of which is not just to bring history vividly (and at times painfully) to life, or to make plain the injustices meted out to Black Americans across centuries, but to make readers and audiences see anew the connections between past and present.”

Plot: Salt-of-the-earth Cole falls head over heels for enigmatic Sadie — but then makes the shocking discovery that she’s a secret agent. Before they can decide on a second date, Cole and Sadie are swept away on an international adventure to save the world.
Review: Thanks to the blockbuster films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Evans has become synonymous with Captain America. Through roles in Knives Out and Defending Jacob, Evans has tried to stretch himself beyond the realm of comic books by selecting projects that are nowhere near comparisons to Steve Rogers. With Ghosted, Evans takes on a role that could not be any less like his iconic superhero role while still allowing him to have fun with stunts, spectacle, and a fair amount of comedy. There is a lesson Hollywood can learn from Apple TV+’s action romcom Ghosted: if you want to tell a story about a schlub who falls for a spy, don’t cast Captain America as the ordinary one. It’s just asking too much of your audience. You can’t present us with Chris Evans as a guy named Cole Riggan and then argue he’s the polar opposite to Ana de Armas’ ass-kicking, CIA operative Sadie. When Evans falls, he doesn’t flail his limbs about like us mere mortals. When he has to pose as a legendary agent and break bread with the enemy (Adrien Brody’s Leveque), there’s a smirk on his face that reads as a little too confident, a little too in control. You don’t get the sense this guy even sweats.

Chris Evans saved the world (and even the universe) multiple times as Captain America. But in his latest Apple TV+ action film “Ghosted,” it’s Ana de Armas who’s doing the rescuing.
“It was great. I mean, we’ve all seen Ana be badass; she was so good in [‘No Time to Die’],” Evans told Variety at the New York premiere of “Ghosted” on Tuesday night. “It was nice to be the damsel in distress. It was nice to need saving — primarily because I didn’t have to sweat during the action sequences.”
Directed by Dexter Fletcher, “Ghosted” follows hopelessly romantic Cole (Evans), who falls head over heels for the enigmatic Sadie (de Armas). When Sadie seemingly ghosts him, Cole follows her to London as a romantic gesture, only to discover that the girl of his dreams is a CIA agent on assignment.

Lady Gaga and producer Bruce Cohen (American Beauty, Silver Linings Playbook) on Thursday were appointed co-chairs of President Joe Biden’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, a board featuring top names across the arts tasked with advising the president on cultural issues.
The committee is making its return after a five-year hiatus, when the board disbanded under the Trump administration in protest of the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017, in which Trump had said there were “very fine people on both sides” of the clash that left one dead. At the time, the 17-member committee sent a letter to then President Trump to decry his “hateful rhetoric” and denounced his efforts to eliminate or severely reduce budgets dedicated to the arts and humanities.

The trailer for Apple TV's new film "Ghosted" is here, and it looks like another case of a big, splashy, blockbuster-type movie headed straight to the small screen. "Ghosted" stars former Marvel superstar Chris Evans and arguably even-bigger-right-now breakout star Ana de Armas, reuniting post-"Knives Out" for an action-packed rom-com. The movie comes from "Rocketman" director Dexter Fletcher, with a screenplay co-written by the screenwriting teams behind the "Deadpool" movies and recent "Spider-Man" trilogy.
That's a whole lot of star power, and the first trailer for "Ghosted" matches it with just as much firepower, as it features de Armas in gun-toting, badass CIA agent mode while Evans delivers some in-over-his-head everyman schtick. Before it unveils the spy-centric plot of the movie, which is a bit of a Trojan horse here, "Ghosted" offers up a meet-cute between Cole (Evans) and Sadie (de Armas), whom Cole thinks "might be the one.

A new musical written by Anna Deavere Smith and featuring music from the Ella Fitzgerald songbook is currently in development. Ella: An American Miracle will receive an Aug. 25-Sept. 21 work session, with Tony-winner Dee Dee Bridgewater and Charity Angél Dawson portraying the iconic singer at different points in her life.
The work session will conclude with a private industry presentation. A production timeline was not disclosed.
“Composers wanted Ella Fitzgerald to sing their songs because listening to her, they knew how their songs were supposed to be sung,” said Smith in a statement. “A jazz singer, a scat singer, she also famously both sang and defined the American song book. To say she had humble beginnings is a profound understatement. She sang America through some of its most discordant times. She was America’s love song. She was an American miracle.”

Anna Delvey became a viral sensation in 2018 thanks to a New York magazine story by Jessica Pressler that delved into how Delvey, not yet 25, fooled dozens of high-rolling New Yorkers — from luxury hotel managers and personal trainers to Nobu founder Richie Notar and, crucially, investment bankers — into thinking she was an heiress. They believed her when she said that the wire transfer was coming or that the credit card was good, just because she dressed and acted the part. That little trick yielded months of hotel stays she never paid for and came awfully close to netting her millions of dollars in loans to start an art-focused social club she called the Anna Delvey Foundation. The story went viral because it read like a Netflix series you couldn’t wait to watch. That Netflix series has arrived, and it delivers.

How do you make a plausible, yet fake-sounding European accent? Ahead of the release of her new Netflix series “Inventing Anna,” star Julia Garner explained the challenge of nailing the distinct tone of voice for her character, Anna Delvey.
“Inventing Anna” is Shonda Rhimes’ upcoming new series that’s inspired by the true story of Anna Delvey, a Russian girl who claimed to be a wealthy German heiress and managed to con the New York City fashion scene and world of high society just through her confidence, style and charm. But, naturally, the idea of “Anna Delvey” is fake, or at least the person she claims to be is.
So for Garner, that meant finding an accent that would capture her character’s mystique and contradictions. And in a video released Friday, the “Ozark” star broke down her process, showing how she started with a more clipped and terse German...

Who is Anna Delvey?
That is the main question after watching the full-length trailer for Netflix's new Shonda Rhimes drama, Inventing Anna.
“Anna Delvey is a masterpiece, bitches!,” Ozark's Julia Garner says in the trailer.
"In Inventing Anna, a journalist with a lot to prove investigates the case of Anna Delvey, the Instagram-legendary German heiress who stole the hearts of New York's social scene - and stole their money as well," reads the logline for Inventing Anna.
"But is Anna New York's biggest con woman, or is she simply the new portrait of the American dream?"
"Anna and the reporter form a dark, funny, love-hate bond as Anna awaits trial and our reporter fights the clock to answer the biggest question in NYC: who is Anna Delvey?"

“Anna Delvey is a masterpiece, bitches!” Julia Garner yells in the trailer for Netflix’s upcoming series “Inventing Anna,” which depicts the downfall of the real-life scamming socialite.
The nine-episode limited series from Shonda Rhimes, premiering on Feb. 11, chronicles New York Magazine’s investigation into Delvey as she awaits trial for grand larceny and theft of services. She was found guilty in May 2019 and was released from prison in February 2021 for good behavior.
In the trailer, viewers get a longer look at Garner as Delvey, complete with a German accent and plenty of attitude. “What are you wearing? You look poor,” she asks the New York Magazine reporter, played by Anna Chlumsky, as Megan Thee Stallion’s “Do It on the Tip” plays in the background. In another instance, one of her victims pleads, “Give me back that money, please,” to which Anna replies: “Why are you being like this?...

To kick off Thanksgiving week, Netflix has dropped the trailer for Shonda Rhimes’ “Inventing Anna,” and announced the story of scammer Anna Delvey will premiere on Feb. 11.
For Variety’s Show Woman of the Year cover story on Rhimes earlier this month, she described the origins of the show. In May 2018, when Rhimes read Jessica Pressler’s New York Magazine story “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People” — a viral journalistic feat that detailed the scamming enterprises of a charming young Russian woman, who had grifted societally connected New Yorkers — she responded to it immediately. “She’s got an eidetic memory,” Rhimes says, describing Delvey. “She speaks all these languages.
“There wasn’t much different about her than any other boy genius who takes over Manhattan — except for the fact that she was a woman.”

“Here Today,” starring Billy Crystal as a venerable TV comedy writer and Tiffany Haddish as the saintly, rough-around-the-edges street singer who becomes his unlikely pal, is a movie that feels like it could have been made 30 years ago: a friendly, adult-skewing, tart-witted but never nasty, jokes-and-hugs-built-around-a-serious-crisis character study that’s just ’90s enough to be comfortably old-fashioned, like an old pair of tasseled loafers. What’s good about the movie is that Crystal, who co-wrote and directed it, has an inside knowledge of the showbiz comedy world (as he demonstrated in 1992 when he directed and starred in the acerbically accomplished “Mr. Saturday Night”), and the prickly vivacity with which he portrays it roots the movie in something real.

Heartwarming comedy and drama directed by Crystal opens in theaters May 7
Billy Crystal and Tiffany Haddish may not be the first on-screen team-up that comes to mind, but we’re glad they did after seeing the first trailer for “Here Today.”
Crystal in this heartwarming comedy and drama plays a comedy writer who is slowly struggling with memory loss and other health issues, and Haddish is the woman whose boyfriend bid just $22 on Crystal in a celebrity auction and got roped into going to lunch with him alone. And as they continue to hang out, even they aren’t quite sure what the nature of their relationship is.
And it’s definitely not sexual either, as Haddish makes perfectly clear after she wakes up in his bed.

Slave Play playwright Jeremy O. Harris will donate a collection of 15 plays by Black playwrights to 53 libraries and community centers across the country, a donation made in lieu of sending Slave Play scripts to Tony Award voters.
O. Harris made the announcement last night on Late Night with Seth Meyers, telling the NBC talk show host that a donation of The Golden Collection has been made in Meyers’ name to his alma mater Northwestern University. The playwright said the donation was made to recognize Meyers’ early and continued support of Slave Play.
The Golden Collection, named for Harris’ grandfather Golden Harris who died two weeks before the playwright learned that Slave Play had been booked at Broadway’s Golden Theatre, was launched in partnership with the Human Rights Campaign. The plays selected for the collection include Les Blancs by Lorraine Hansberry, The Colored Museum by George C. Wolfe, An Octoroon by Branden Jacobs Jenkins,...

“See the whole board,” a chess-instructing Martin Sheen’s President Josiah Bartlet tells Rob Lowe’s Sam Seaborn in HBO Max’s A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote.

Filmed in recent weeks at downtown L.A.’s Orpheum Theatre, this newly visually streamlined version of “Hartsfield’s Landing” is a pretty easy sell that also provides a welcome relief and sobering reminder when language mattered and presidents were presidential, at least on network TV.
One of my favorite series of all time and much munched TV comfort food over the years, the West Wing in 2020 is a remarkable throwback to a now distant era in more ways than one. Amidst the get out the vote buoying,...
