One of the most beloved characters on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is Spike, a punk rock vampire who falls in love with the Slayer he set out to kill. Spike was a hugely charismatic force and, despite series creator Joss Whedon's best efforts, he quickly became a romantic character. The British bad-boy was supposed to be killed off immediately, but he became such a fan favorite that the writers had to figure out what to do with him for the rest of the series. The audience loved Spike because he wasn't just a misfit among misfits — he owned it. From his slick-back blond hair to his leather trench coat, Spike was everyone's favorite outcast.
James Marsters was originally only supposed to play Spike for 5 episodes, the actor explained in a 2012 interview. Keeping the punk rock vamp in the series challenged the central message of the show, so the series...

Celebration of the legendary New York hotel and haven for actors, artists and musicians that spills secrets of squalor, celebrity and death
Earlier this year saw the release of Dreaming Walls, an interesting if meanderingly vague film about New York’s legendary Hotel Chelsea; the place which is actually an apartment building and artist colony, famous for residents and habitués including Andy Warhol, Sid Vicious, Isadora Duncan, Dylan Thomas and Arthur Miller. That rather downbeat film emphasised the efforts of longterm residents to stay in the building after it was bought by new owners who allegedly wanted to sanitise and gentrify it. Here is a second documentary which is far more celebratory, with far more interviewees, far more sexy name-dropping and more uproarious anecdotes, especially about the friendly ghosts who allegedly roam its corridors.
Again, this film pays tribute to the building’s manager Stanley Bard, who cultivated its reputation...

It's been 20 years since "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" concluded and no character went on a more transformative journey than Spike (James Marsters). Blond, British, and rarely without his black leather duster or a clever insult, Spike was half Billy Idol, half Nancy Spungen, and all vampire. Introduced in season 2, he wound up stealing the show, going from Buffy's enemy to ally of convenience to lover. Spike's development hadn't been intended from the outset; he was introduced as a villain and meant to die quickly after as one. Yet, fans loved him so much that keeping him around became a necessity.
Marsters spoke at length about his "Buffy" experience to Radio Times. He admits that the show's writers "never knew what to do with" his character, because Spike's sexy swagger undermined the story's themes:

It’s the age of the biopic, and many filmmakers are turning to classic rock artists as their subjects. It makes sense — their music has moved people for decades, and their lives are usually full of enough intrigue to fill at least one film. As news of the new Bob Dylan biopic continues to trickle out and we not-so-patiently await a Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac movie, here are six classic rock biopics to watch.

The 2014 film Love & Mercy stars Paul Dano and John Cusack as The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson. The film alternates between the 1960s, as Wilson works on the seminal Pet Sounds, and the 1980s, as he grapples with his mental health and begins a new relationship. Wilson himself said that upon watching the film, he was astonished by both portrayals of him, particularly Dano’s.

These days he's known as one of the finest actors in the industry for his almost unmatched versatility and range. Gary Oldman is frequently unrecognizable from role to role. Not only has he built a respected career as a result, but back in the mid-80s — before his appearances in the Harry Potter franchise or Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy — Oldman was coming off an acclaimed run in the theater and was yet to make his name in the film industry.
Having starred in 1982's "Remembrance," the actor wouldn't appear in another film until 1986 when he had to be talked into playing Sid Vicious. By his own admission, Oldman had little to no interest in the Sex Pistols bassist (or punk in general), but was convinced by director Alex Cox to take on the lead role in his retelling of Vicious' dysfunctional relationship with Nancy Spungen. Almost 30 years later,...

"JFK" is one of the most controversial films ever made, because of the alternate view of a major historical event provided by its director Oliver Stone, a filmmaker long known for his unapologetic brashness and penchant for highly subjective narratives. Stone is an outspoken critic of The Warren Commission, which concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone to assassinate the president, and he saw "JFK" as his opportunity to offer a "counter myth to the official one."
Stone's version hypothesizes that Kennedy's peaceful policies made him an enemy of warmongering intelligence agencies, and that the CIA, FBI, and Secret Service conspired to get rid of him so they could wage war in Vietnam. He used a masterful blend of reenactments and archival footage in order to showcase his own theories, which led The Chicago Tribune to accuse him of "rewrit[ing] history." It's an accusation that Stone rejects. He told Speaking...

The success of “Fleabag” loosed a glut of shows about young women tottering – heels broken, mascara smeared – in the vague direction of adult responsibility. Few have been as purely enjoyable as “Everything I Know About Love,” Dolly Alderton’s adaptation of her own memoir, which debuts on Peacock this week after winning plaudits on the BBC in midsummer.
With its photogenic cast, pyjama-party vibe and commitment to steering its characters towards better things, this Working Title-produced, London-set miniseries should provide superior comfort TV for anyone constitutionally unable to face Nathan Fielder’s postmodern provocations or the carnage of a “Game of Thrones” prequel. It’ll be only more comforting the more years you have on the show’s fresh-faced principals.

There are many layers to the mystique of the Chelsea Hotel. Long before it became a hipster hangout, the 12-story, 250-room fortress, built in the 1880s, was home to Mark Twain. In the ’50s, the Chelsea played host to assorted literary figures, the first of whom to lend it a dissolute aura was Dylan Thomas, who was living the lush life in room 205 when he became ill and died in 1953. The beats moved in, and so did Arthur Miller after he divorced Marilyn Monroe and Arthur C. Clarke while he was writing “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
But it was Andy Warhol who put the stamp of underground cachet on the Chelsea when he shot his three-and-a-half-hour multi-screen ramble “The Chelsea Girls” there in 1966. By the time that Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe took up residence in 1969, they already saw themselves as the next generation in the Chelsea tradition of bohemian squalor.

Writer-director Jonas Carpignano completes his Calabrian trilogy with A Chiara, an enthralling drama about a teenage girl coming to terms with her family’s role in the mafia, which won the Europa Cinema Label at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. With a documentary-like authenticity, this is a touching, powerful film with a lyrical visual palette and a superb sense of time and place. As in Mediterranea and A Ciambra, which told stories about immigration and the Roma community, respectively, Carpignano takes us to Gioia Tauro at the southern tip of the Italian mainland. The Chelsea Hotel has a storied history of artistry, creativity, and death. Coming to fame as a place for bohemians to find cheap rent, it grew in notoriety with the deaths of writer Dylan Thomas and Nancy Spungen, a staple in 1970s New York punk. Various poets and musicians littered the halls of the hotel, given a renaissance when Patti Smith’s Just Kids became a must-read.
Directors Amélie van Elmbt and Maya Duverdier’s documentary explores a specific part of the hotel’s history––the last 10 years of its existence marred by a construction project that has lasted throughout that duration, an attempt by new owners to modernize the spaces that were home to not-yet-famous artists. Van Elmbt and Duverdier focus on the ghosts of this place, projecting old videos of past tenants onto the bare, cracked walls of each half-finished apartment. The feeling of this place, one deserving...

Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones hasn’t spoken to singer John Lydon, a.k.a. Johnny Rotten, since they clashed on a 2008 reunion tour, and he just helped fight off Lydon’s unsuccessful lawsuit to prevent the use of the band’s music in Pistol, the new Hulu series about the band. But even so, Jones won’t rule out one more reunion tour for the Sex Pistols, especially with all four founding members alive. (Sid Vicious, who replaced original bassist Glen Matlock, died of a heroin overdose in 1979.)

Based on Steve Jones’ 2017 memoir Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol, FX’s miniseries Pistol thrashes through London’s early punk scene as seen through the bleary eyes of the Sex Pistols: guitarist Jones (Toby Wallace), drummer Paul Cook (Jacob Slater), singer John “Johnny Rotten” Lydon (Anson Boon), and bassist Glen Matlock (Christian Lees), who is unceremoniously dumped and replaced by John Beverley, who rechristened himself Sid Vicious (Louis Partridge). Emma Appleton plays the tragically flawed heroine Nancy Spungen.
The entire career of the Sex Pistols was a premeditated swindle malignantly perpetuated by their manager Malcolm McLaren (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), who similarly plotted the downfall of the rising proto-punk outfit The New York Dolls. He schemed the chaotic caper at 430 King’s Road, the boutique Sex, co-owned by the truly revolutionary Vivienne Westwood (Talulah Riley), after the artful dodging Jones tried to make off with the wrong pants. Johnny Rotten was right to sue to stop FX’s Pistol from going forward.
The Sex Pistols and PiL frontman ultimately was unsuccessful in his legal efforts last year to prevent the seminal band’s music being used in the Danny Boyle-directed miniseries. However, Pistol, which dropped in its entirety today on Disney-owned Hulu, is an overly sentimental love letter that never should have been sent. You’d find more depth and authenticity on how England has been really dreamin’ over the decades in this week’s pomp-packed Platinum Jubilee for the disastrous reign of Elizabeth II.
Simply put, Pistol is more junk than punk.
Even with searing classics like “God Save the Queen” in the well-crafted soundtrack mix, the six-episode series based in part on guitarist Steve Jones’ 2017 memoir limps along when it should roar. Hobbled with a surprisingly sub-standard coming-of-age story held together figuratively and literally by amphetamines,...

The short and sweet and sour history of the 1970s British punk band the Sex Pistols is told in a six-part limited series—the FX on Hulu show is appropriately titled Pistol—based on lead guitarist Steve Jones’ book, Lonely Boy. (Jones is played by Toby Wallace.) The working-class kids with rebellious lyrics, ripped clothes and permanent sneers rocked the establishment and gave aimless youth new role models for questioning authority. But their personal lives were in turmoil—as the cast told TV Insider. Take Pistols guitarist Sid Vicious (Louis Partridge) and his American girlfriend Nancy Spungen (Emma Appleton), whose doomed romance was covered in the 1986 film Sid and Nancy. Here, it’s woven into the bigger story of the band. “She had that same hell for leather, all-or-nothing attitude, so they egged each other on,” Partridge says. The Pistols hung out at a King’s Road London boutique called Sex,...

Some of the most exciting filmmaking in “Pistol,” FX’s new Danny Boyle-directed limited series, happens onstage. In concert scenes featuring the Sex Pistols — the real-life punk pathbreakers at the center of this story — the camera toggles between performer and spectator, moving so rapidly that it seems to eliminate the distance between the two. Director of photography Anthony Dod Mantle captures both staging in the foreground and expressive moshing in the background. The writhing performance seems less to spark violence in the audience than to run parallel to it, another expression of the free-floating anger in the air.
It’s a canny way of depicting the Pistols’ appeal: The show argues that the band had an intuitive ability to tap into the rage of youth culture in pre-Thatcherite England. It makes that argument eloquently by showing the group converting even small audiences, early on, into wild and emotional demonstrations.

Early in Pistol, the FX-produced six-part miniseries about the thrilling rise and ugly fall of seminal English punk act the Sex Pistols, the band and their friends gather in their makeshift rehearsal space for a raucous party. Grandiose manager Malcolm McLaren (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) proclaims to guitar player Steve Jones (Toby Wallace) that they are witnessing the birth of a new movement. A skeptical Jones, noting that the revelers are belting out the innocuous pop hit “Shang-a-Lang,” wonders if a rebellion can be accompanied by a Bay City Rollers soundtrack.

The Sex Pistols were a mythical band. Steve Jones couldn’t play guitar. Johnny Rotten couldn’t sing. Sid Vicious couldn’t always stand upright, much less keep his spiky hair on end. Malcom McLaren couldn’t manage. With Glen Matlock and Paul Cook rounding out the band, the personnel are just the stencils for McLaren’s silk screen. Danny Boyle’s Pistol, coming to FX on Hulu, perpetuates the mythology. This is probably part of the reason John Lydon didn’t sign off on the project. He likes to keep his public image limited. It also might be a little melodramatic for the former Sex Pistols frontman. That works for TV more than it does for punks.

The first trailer for FX's "Pistol" is here, and the Sex Pistols series looks like it's ready to cause mayhem. The 42-second promo gives viewers a close-up look at the anarchic musicians who took over the U.K. scene in the '70s, including Sid Vicious (Louis Partridge) and Nancy Spungen (Emma Appleton).
"We're gonna kick this country awake if it kills us," one of the bandmates declares in the promo's first seconds, while another asserts that "the monarchy has stolen our future." Statements like that continue through the rest of the spot, with someone (maybe Maisie Williams' Jordan) calling for "youth revolution," someone else...

FX has set the date of its Danny Boyle-directed limited series about Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones. Pistol will premiere May 31 exclusively on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ in UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.
The limited series is based on Jones’ 2017 memoir Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol. The series was created and written by Craig Pearce and will be executive produced by Boyle, Pearce, Tracey Seaward, Steve Jones, Gail Lyon, Anita Camarata, Paul Lee and Hope Hartman. It’s from FX Prods.
Here’s the official logline: “The furious, raging storm at the center of this revolution are the Sex Pistols – and at the center of this series is Sex Pistols’ founding member and guitarist, Steve Jones. FX’s “Pistol,” the series based on the memoir from Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones, will begin streaming on Hulu May 31, with all six episodes of the limited series available at launch.
“Pistol” has been described by FX as a show about “a rock and roll revolution.”
“The furious, raging storm at the center of this revolution are the Sex Pistols — and at the center of this series is Sex Pistols’ founding member and guitarist, Steve Jones. Jones’ hilarious, emotional and at times heartbreaking journey guides us through a kaleidoscopic telling of three of the most epic, chaotic and mucus-spattered years in the history of music. Based on Jones’ memoir ‘Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol,’ this is the story of a band of spotty, noisy, working-class kids with ‘no future,’ who shook the boring, corrupt establishment to its core, threatened to bring down the government and changed music and culture forever.

There’s no future in England’s dreaming but despite this FX is setting its Sex Pistol drama series for May.
FX boss John Landgraf revealed that the Pistol premiere date during his virtual TCA exec session.
The series, which is based on the memoir of guitarist Steve Jones, comes from Danny Boyle.
It tells the story of the band from West London’s council estates to Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren’s notorious Kings Road Sex shop to the international controversy that came with the release of Never Mind the Bollocks, which was banned by the BBC and frequently is listed as one of the most influential albums of all time.
“It faithfully captures the story of Sex Pistols, the British born, anti-establishment punk music band who started a revolution,” said Landgraf.

The strings swirl, Sid Vicious descends a staircase and begins doing his best Chairman of the Board impression (even if it sounds a bit more like Dracula than Sinatra), and then everything implodes in his cover version of “My Way.” The bassist gave the song a punk-rock makeover for his star turn in The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle shortly before his death in 1979. When people finally saw it, upon the film’s release in May 1980, it became one of Vicious’ iconic moments — mostly because, as he sings, he did it his way.

Malcolm McLaren, former manager of The Sex Pistols and legendary impresario of the punk fashion/music movement, died Thursday at age 64, according to multiple reports.
McLaren had fought cancer for some time. His body will be flown from Switzerland home to London, where he'll be buried in Highgate cemetery.
McLaren was best known as the manager of The Sex Pistols. He and the band achieved notoriety in May 1977 when the Pistols' single "God Save The Queen," released during Queen Elizabeth's silver jubilee, was banned by the BBC.
He'd hired a boat to take the band down the Thames river, performing the song during the week-long silver jubilee festivities. The police stopped the boat. McLaren was arrested. The song hit the No. 2 spot in Britain. Genius.
Born in 1946 in North London, he was raised by his grandmother. He left home in his teens, attending and getting expelled from several art colleges.
