Let’s give three cheers for, well, three things: special effects people, cartoonishly terrorizing punks, and Tab Hunter showing up to save the day. This trifecta (and much more) is brought to you by Grotesque (1988), a truly loopy home invasion thriller with enough turns for two films and enough B movie savvy to have you laughing along with it.
Given a limited theatrical run by Empire Pictures in September, Grotesque wasn’t even embraced by horror fans, who were thoroughly thrown off by the tonal whiplash present in the final product; I get it, but at the same time it gives you so much movie for your money that it can’t be faulted on its ambitions.
An interminable opening kicks us off, as we watch a maiden locked in a castle get accosted by a cloaked monster. The film suddenly cuts, and we find ourselves in a Hollywood screening room,...

Rock Hudson’s small budget big-explosion war movie applies decent production values and decent direction to a good idea, but substitutes some weak double-crosses for a real screen story. Hudson and his co-producer Gene Corman toss in a fine stack of quality actors… who don’t do much more than dodge tanks, flame throwers, and big explosions. Those explosions look familiar — I’ll bet they were recycled in more than a couple subsequent movies. Aiding and abetting handsome Hudson are George Peppard (manning a Tarantino-issue flamethrower), Nigel Green, and Guy Stockwell, who seems to be in Every Universal release around this time.

One of the more satisfying costume adventures of the ‘sixties is also one of its star’s best vehicles. Charlton Heston was born to play bigger-than-life historical types, and his Norman knight in this film has the benefit of an intelligent screenplay and a terrific supporting ensemble. This hero’s armor doesn’t shine — he’s more than willing to risk everything to possess a pagan woman with whom he’s become infatuated. Many would-be epics want us to think that the charms of unlikely damsels like Virginia Mayo and Claudette Colbert changed the course of history, but this show makes it seem more than possible. Plus, it features great action scenes and a terrific music score by Jerome Moross.

Released by Universal in 1967, “Tobruk” opens with the feel of a 1960s spy thriller. Rock Hudson is Major Donald Craig, a Canadian prisoner of war on board a German transport ship anchored somewhere off the North Africa coast in late 1942. A group of frogmen surface near the ship and sneak on board with silencers fixed to their guns in order to capture Craig. The frogmen are led by Captain Bergman (George Peppard) who reveal themselves to be part of a team of German commandos.
The commandos take Craig to a German airfield and fly him to a desert landing strip. They’re unexpectedly greeted by a group of British soldiers led by Colonel Harker (Nigel Green). It’s revealed that Bergman is the leader of a German-Jewish commando unit attached to a group of British commandos operating in North Africa. They secured the rescue of Craig due...

Stars: Axel Jodorowsky, Blanca Guerra, Guy Stockwell, Thelma Tixou, Sabrina Dennison, Adan Jodorowsky, Faviola Elenka Tapia, María de Jesús Aranzabal | Written and Directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky
I love films, I always have. From an early age I’d watch them and take every detail in and I’d read books on them. The problem with the subject though is that it’s huge. You can watch so many films every year and feel you know an amazing amount then something will come along that totally blows everything out of the water. Alejandro Jodorowsky is a name that I’m sure some will know and some won’t, I’ll admit I didn’t know much about his work if anything, and then I was given the chance to review Santa Sangre. One way to describe this film is an education into the extreme, the surreal and the stunning.

It was 12 years between films for Alejandro Jodorowsky when he announced his making of the film Santa Sangre. Nobody knew what to expect, and for good reason: Jodorowsky is a dividing director. A visionary, a master at his craft, eccentric and difficult to truly categorize, he made films that you couldn’t help but speak about for days and weeks after seeing them. Everything from El Topo, The Holy Mountain and Fando & Lis were films that were like a punch to the temple and were big during the midnight screening boom. But with Santa Sangre, he was coming back after a self contained sabbatical from film making and back to the forefront of cinema. Did he bring the goods or did we get a dud?

Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Santa Sangre had been without a Us DVD release since it originally premiered in the early 90s. Since then, the film has remained a bit of enigma to anyone who was unlucky enough to miss it. Made some 10 years after his last film, Santa Sangre marked a return to Mexico and a return to the fabulously surreal world that fans of Jodorowsky had been so familiar with. Now thanks to Severin Films, Santa Sangre has been released on both DVD and Blu-ray with over five hours of exclusive extras.

Writers: Alejandro Jodorowsky, Roberto Leoni, Claudio Argento
Director: Alejandro Jodorowsky
Cast: Axel Jodorowsky, Blanca Guerra, Guy Stockwell
The Movie:
For all the bizarre characters, mixed religious iconography, and surreal set pieces, Alejandro’s Jodorowsky’s Santa Sangre, well-deserving of its cult classic status, is his most straightforward work. It’s a human story, a journey into, around, and through manhood and the subversion of coming-of-age by life events both mysterious and profound. At its core is Fenix (the young version played by Adan Jodorowsky and by Axel Jodorowsky in adulthood), the son of a gluttonous strongman/knife-thrower, Orgo (Guy Stockwell), and a trapeze performer/armless-saint-worshiping-cult leader named Concha (Blanca Guerra), who literally becomes part of his own mother and is forced to help her rid the world of the the lust and promiscuity that led to the destruction of their family.

Filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky has few films to his name, but those that bear it have a following. His most recent work to date has finally been released on home video with a great selection of extras. Fenix (Axel Jodorowsky, the director.s son) lives in an asylum and imagines himself closer to the bird which he.s named after as he lives in a tree that.s in his room and only eats raw fish rejecting normal food. We discover how Fenix got into this predicament by a flashback to his youth. The young Fenix (Adan Jodorowsky, the director.s other son) was in his father Orgo.s (Guy Stockwell) circus. Orgo was a womanizer and has his eye on tattooed stripper...

So the day has come for you folks to take home Costas Mandylor in the final chapter of the phenomenon that is Saw! Well, at least until the inevitable reboot. Even cooler...if the jolly red-suited fatman brought you a 3D television last month, you can watch this puppy in its gory 3D glory, too.
Another franchise that is buzzing this week is the video game sequel, Dead Space 2. In addition to the game itself, you can also bring home the collector's edition, the album soundtrack, a hardcover game guide, and an animated DVD movie. That should keep you busy for a while.
Oh yeah, there are a couple of other interesting titles with some familiar faces from "True Blood", "Angel", "Buffy", and even "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman".

One day during the ‘70s, director Alejandro Jodorowsky was sitting in a bar in Mexico City when he was approached by a big-bellied, bespectacled man. “May I have a coffee with you? I love your page Fabulas Panicas,” said the man, referring to a weekly comic strip Jodorowsky wrote for the newspaper El Heraldo de Mexico. After Jodorowsky agreed to have a drink with the stranger, the man introduced himself as Goyo Cárdenas. The name rang a bell with the Chile-born filmmaker, as it would have done with pretty much everyone in Mexico. Cárdenas was an infamous serial killer who...
