The YA adaptation boom of the 2010s is a fascinating time, filled with potential franchises that never took off, some that lingered far beyond their expiration date, and others that remained successful till their final curtain call. The landscape had never been more fruitful for teens and, especially, young girls to have something for them at the box office. But if you weren’t already in love with an established book, like Suzanne Collins’ “The Hunger Games,” the odds weren’t in your favor that your favorite adaptation would get more than a single feature.
In February 2013 Warner Bros. released “Beautiful Creatures,” an adaptation of Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl’s 2009 novel. The story follows Southern boy Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich) and his growing attraction to newcomer Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert). Ethan soon realizes Lena comes from a long line of witches, and on her 16th birthday her soul will...

Spider-Man Noir is making the jump to live action, according to Variety. The 1930s detective movie-style hero, who fans have seen played by Nicolas Cage in "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" and by Milo Ventimiglia in "Ultimate Spider-Man," is reportedly set to get his own TV series courtesy of Amazon Prime Video.
While casting information isn't yet known, the untitled Spider-Man Noir series counts "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" writer-producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller among the members of its producing team, along with former Sony Chairperson Amy Pascal (who executive produces) and "22 Jump Street" writer Oren Uziel. Lord and Miller's 2018 film saw Cage play an older, black-and-white private investigator version of Peter Parker with a hilarious level of angst. The character's favored pastimes included drinking egg creams, beating up Nazis, and letting matches burn down to his fingertips "just to feel something."

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Brave New World,” streaming now on Peacock.
Alden Ehrenreich is no stranger to stepping into the worlds of iconic intellectual property: In 2013 he starred in the big-screen adaptation of Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl’s “Beautiful Creatures” and in 2018 joined the “Star Wars” universe as the titular Han Solo in “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” Now, comes his first television series regular role as John the Savage in David Wiener’s take on Aldous Huxley’s early 1930s novel “Brave New World.”
In the nine-episode first season of the futuristic dystopia, John saved an Alpha and a Beta from New London from a bloody attack during their vacation to the Savage Lands, where he grew up, only for him to learn that his true roots were in the caste-driven system of New London too. For some reason I seem to be reviewing a lot of comics with female leads at the moment. Lois Lane, Mary Jane, Black Canary, the female Doctor (from Doctor Who), and now one of my personal favourites, Supergirl, and Batwoman. Which is nice. It’s nice because there is such a lot of stuff to choose from out there, and female characters are as likely to get chosen as any others. I remember getting laughed at back in the early 1980′s because I read Wonder Woman. Couldn’t understand why, as she was as iconic a character as Superman or Batman but, apparently, because she was a ‘girl’ she didn’t count. How times have changed, albeit after taking a several year detour through the Bad Girl T&a era of the 1990′s, which I’m willing to bet my...

The popular and mysterious character will start her own adventures in a five-issue run in January
Star, a recent addition to the Captain Marvel comic series, will star in her own limited book series. Kelly Thompson, writer of the current Captain Marvel series and creator of Star's character, will write the five-issue series, which debuts in January.
Star first appeared in the pages of Captain Marvel back in July, in issue 8, "Falling Star," which focused on the fallout from the reveal of Carol Danvers's Kree heritage to the world. Not surprisingly, Star's name and costume piqued the curiosity of readers, who were eager to learn more about mysterious new character clad in Captain Marvel's colors.
Marvel announced the new series at the October 3 New York Comic Con Retailer Panel.“The excitement surrounding Star has been really fun to watch,” Kelly Thompson said. “And there's still a...

Marvel Comics is making a big change to Captain Marvel’s long-running origin story. Since the 1977 Ms. Marvel No. 2 was released, the origin story for the character has always been that she obtained her awesome powers through exposure to an alien device known as the Psyche-Magnitron. When it exploded Captain Marvel shielded Carol Danvers from its radiation with his own body, causing Carol to absorb much of his own genetic template.
Well, in the the fourth issue of the “Life of Captain Marvel” series by Margaret Stohl, Carlos Pacheco and Erica D’Urso it’s revealed that the hero did not gain superpowers this way. Apparently, she’s actually been a member of alien race the Kree all along.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “the comic established that Carol’s mother is, in fact, a member of the alien race the Kree, making Carol a Kree-human hybrid from birth as...

In early September, Brie Larson promised to break the internet with her tease for what became the first reveal of her Captain Marvel costume on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. And while she didn't quite accomplish that goal, she gets another shot with the first trailer release for the film that looks just awesome and ushers in a whole new era for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character will be making her debut in the self-titled film coming out in March 2019, which is set in the 1990s and features a much younger Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. From there, Captain Marvel (aka Carol Danvers) jumps to the present wher she goes toe-to-toe with Thanos (the bad guy from Avengers: Infinity War) in May's Avengers 4. Let's not forget that Thanos is the man who provided a smack-down to the Hulk before wiping out half of humanity across the galaxy. Bottom line: she's strong.

New series. New directions. New beginnings. It all kicks off this July with The Life of Captain Marvel #1 – from the creative team of Margaret Stohl and Carlos Pacheco.
“Life presents the origins of Carol Danvers and Captain Marvel in one place, and in a way we haven’t seen before,” said Svp and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “Margie’s pulled together all of the strands of Carol’s backstory to craft a tale that will no doubt become a seminal story about the character, and set her in place for her role in Avengers and elsewhere throughout the Marvel Universe.”
“It’s nothing you’ll expect and nothing you’ve seen happen but there will be parts of her life that change the context of what you’ve seen before, so it’s telling the other side of the story, of how she came to be,” Stohl said of Carol’s new story.

If you’ve been keeping up with the recent happenings at Marvel, then you’re well aware of Generations, an upcoming endeavor consisting of ten one-shots uniting heroes who have adopted various mantles, both past and present. In other words, expect to see team-ups featuring the likes of Wolverines Laura Kinney and Logan, and even Thors Odinson and Jane Foster.
What’s more is that we recently discovered this seemingly standalone tale will, in fact, have some sort of intertwining with Secret Empire, the House of Ideas’ currently in progress major crossover event. Sure, we probably won’t know all of the specifics until the actual periodicals ship, but it remains clear that something called “the Vanishing Point” is the reasoning for these otherwise anachronistic team-ups.

Much has been written lately about the recent Marvel Retailer Summit and the unfortunate public relations debacle that followed. As you may know, Marvel had arranged to speak with and listen to leading comic shop retailers following a difficult downturn in their comic sales. The fireworks really started in the subsequent ICV2 interview when Marvel’s Senior Vice President of Print, Sales and Marketing, David Gabriel, summarized the retailer conversations, and the reasons behinds the sales slump in an awkward, clumsy fashion that ignited a plethora of heated conversations.
And then United Airlines’ corporate blunder dominated the headlines so outraged fans and consumers could focus their anger towards that brand instead.
But as the pundits reviewed Marvel’s missteps, there were a few topics missing from these conversations and analyses. Maybe these issues were just pushed into the background, but they are important puzzle pieces necessary to understanding Geek Culture’s retail landscape.

But as the pundits reviewed Marvel’s missteps, there were a few topics missing from these conversations and analyses. Maybe these issues were just pushed into the background, but they are important puzzle pieces necessary to understanding Geek Culture’s retail landscape.

Recently, Marvel has been putting out some rather informative and entertaining videos hyping up new releases, one example of which was the first in the line of “Captain Marvel: Alien Nation” promos that blended motion comics with music and narration. So, if you enjoyed the previous offering, you’ll probably be pleased to know that another has found its way online as to celebrate the release of The Mighty Captain Marvel #2.
In it, writer Margaret Stohl and editor Sana Amanat walk us through the finer aspects of the story, while avoiding major spoilers. Needless to say, this issue offers up a multifaceted experience. Not only does it squarely place the focus on a strong female lead, but it also addresses how Carol Danvers helps pay Alpha Flight’s bills: By having her own TV show. Now that’s something you don’t see in every superhero comic, eh?

Sneak Peek Marvel Comics' "The Mighty Captain Marvel" #2, written by Margaret Stohl and illustrated by Ramon Rosanas, with covers by Elizabeth Torque, Mike McKone and Joe Jusko, available February 22, 2017, in support of Marvel Studios' upcoming "Captain Marvel" stand-alone feature film, starring Brie Larson ("Room") as 'Carol Danvers':
"...for someone like 'Carol Danvers', being super famous isn't exactly enjoyable -- she'd rather be focused on her job as commander of 'Alpha Flight Space Station' than worried about who's playing her on the new 'Captain Marvel TV' show.
"So when her crew discovers that a shady character is hunting for alien children, Carol jumps on the case..."

In order to celebrate its new series, The Mighty Captain Marvel, the House of Ideas has just released a cool new video bringing readers up to speed in a matter of minutes. Somewhat similar to its Marvel 101 web series, this “Alien Nation” clip is a bit more entertaining in its presentation as writer Margaret Stohl (Black Widow: Forever Red, Black Widow: Red Vengeance) and editor Sana Amanat sum up the history of Captain Marvel in a nutshell – and we’re not just talking about Carol Danvers.
Although, considering she’s getting her first feature film starring Brie Larson in the not too distant future, Carol is understandably the primary focus here. Aside from the usual round of superheroics, it should be quite interesting to see how Stohl adapts her to living in a post-Civil War II world.

The Maze Runner will finally hit theaters this Friday, September 19th.

Fans have described it as a combination of Lord of the Flies, The Hunger Games, and the legendary television series Lost.
Books to film – especially young adult adaptations – are big bucks at the box office. Sundays at San Diego Comic-Con are known for family-friendly fare, but this year there's plenty to keep horror fans sticking around like "Supernatural," "The Strain," and "The Following" (all presenting their wares in the hallowed Hall H).
Along with that trio of horror TV panels, there's plenty more on tap for Day 4 of the 2014 Sdcc, especially if you're a comic lover (you know, those things that started the event in the first place), plus the annual presentation of "Buffy the Musical: Once More with Feeling" to close things out.
Check out the highlights below, and be sure to visit the official San Diego Comic-Con website for the full lineup.

Launching a new take on the box office-saturated “Paranormal Teen Romance” genre in early 2013 was perhaps not a good idea. Twilight fans were still reeling from the end of their beloved franchise, The Hunger Games Mockingjays were busy gearing up to share what had become a hugely successful franchise, Divergent devotees were busy dream-casting, and Percy Jackson fans (fan?) were far too consumed with celebrating that their (his or her?) series was not dead. Even with strong shelf sales, Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl’s best-selling “Caster Chronicles” series didn’t seem poised to be the kind of cinematic juggernaut that could compete with Twilight and The Hunger Games and whatever would come next – it simply didn’t have the heat to push it over the top – which is a damn shame, because the duo’s Gothic romance spawned one hell of an underrated feature in Richard Lagravenese’s Beautiful Creatures. The...

When a book becomes a hit, topping bestseller lists and leaving store shelves vacant, one question always quickly follows: “When will it be turned into a movie?”
Audiences have seen this time and time again, with major examples being Gone with the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Lord of the Rings series, among many others.
Adapting literature to film can be a win-win situation, as it provides an original story with a built-in audience that will likely buy tickets come opening day. At the same time, not every book translates to box-office success, with some vehicles being better suited to a smaller medium — like TV.
Creating TV adaptations of beloved literature is not a new phenomenon, but it’s one TV executives should increasingly consider in the face of a disappointing fall season.

To say this year has been unkind to young adult adaptations would be an understatement. In February, "Beautiful Creatures" opened with just $7.5 million in ticket sales, this despite being based on the popular Ya novel by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. In March, "The Host," an adaptation of "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer's Ya novel, underwhelmed with an opening of $10 million. Last weekend, it was "Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" that stumbled: the adaptation of Cassandra Claire's popular Ya series grossed only $14 million in its first five days of release. Even the first trailer for the adaptation of Veronica Roth's "Divergent," the series many have pegged as the heir apparent to "The Hunger Games," was met with a few shrugs after it debuted during the MTV Video Music Awards pre-show on Sunday.
This is the world that Mark Waters' adaptation of Richelle Mead's "Vampire Academy" is coming into next year.

Two weeks from now Sdcc 2013 will be winding down, so are there enough horror offerings to entice attendees back to the show for Day 4 (July 21)? With "Supernatural" kicking things off bright and early, we say, "Yes!"
Also on the schedule for Sunday (traditionally the family-themed day of the event) are "Under the Dome," an update on the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's werewolf/Pi/serial killer mashup novella The Skin Trade, a chance to build your own monster, surviving in a post-apocalyptic world, a Neil Gaiman Spotlight panel, a look at what's coming from Diamond Select Toys, a how-to on creating suspenseful, exciting, anxiety-inducing stories, and per usual, a screening of "Buffy the Musical: Once More with Feeling" to close things out.

A gripping combination of political history and personal intrigue, Pablo Larraín's No (2012, Network, 15) dramatically recounts the campaign to remove General Pinochet from power during the 1988 Chilean referendum. Based on a stage play by Antonio Skármeta, the action centres on René Saavedra (Gael García Bernal), an advertising executive enlisted to sell the "No" campaign to a nation with the slogan "Happiness is coming", to the displeasure of the hard-line politicos who believe he's belittling their cause.
The completion of a thematic trilogy (following Tony Manero and Post Mortem), No benefits from Larraín's bold use of boxy, grainy U-matic video stock, which enables him to blend latterday recreations with authentic archival TV footage. The result is a seamless mix of fact and fiction, brought together through a unifying aesthetic in which the medium perfectly fits the message.

While it has a lot of humor and a little charm, Beautiful Creatures suffers from a rushed story, poor editing, and poor use of such a great ensemble cast. The film has a lot to like in it, but those elements never come together to capture the magic of its story and setting. Based on the popular novel by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl (which I will admit I have not read), the film was written for screen and directed by Richard Lagravenese (P.S. I Love You), and features a stellar cast including Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert, Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum, Thomas Mann, Emma Thompson, Margo Martindale, Eileen Atkins, Zoey Deutch, Tiffany Boone, Rachel Brosnahan, Kyle...

Beautiful Creatures
Directed by: Richard Lagravanese
Cast: Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert, Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum
Running Time: 2 hrs 4 mins
Rating: PG-13
Due Out: May 21, 2013
“Beautiful Creatures ” available on Blu-ray Combo pack, DVD and Digital Download 5/21
Plot: A young man in South Carolina (Ehrenreich) falls for a new classmate (Englert) who has superpowers.
Who’S It For? The teen demographic is definitely the target of this film, as Beautiful Creatures features typical high school drama, and even extended make-out sessions. Driven by honest performances, this movie is for the supernatural-inclined young adult crowd who are at least somewhat familiar with Twilight, etc.

In the wake of Star Wars’ massive and surprisingly success, studios went looking for the next Star Wars. We’ve seen this cycle again and again, which has led to some good things (the revival of Star Trek in 1979) and some bad (the original Battlestar Galactica). In the wake of Stephanie Meyer’s perplexingly popular Twilight, publishers and film studios alike have been demanding the next Twilight. Hungry authors have been more than happy to fill the order with way too many urban fantasies reading like made-to-order hash. What everyone loses sight of is that Star Wars and Twilight each staked out territory that had not been overly mined in the period before their arrival. So, what makes any of the imitators succeed is how well executed it is and how much the formula is given fresh ingredients to keep it from feeling like warmed up leftovers.

Straight from the halls of the Anaheim Convention Center during WonderCon, we have the brand new trailer for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, courtesy of Apple! While everyone points to Harry Potter, Twilight and The Hunger Games as examples of blockbuster hits, the truth is that the young adult adaptation genre has seen its fair share of disappointments over the last few years. I Am Number Four, based on the book by Pittacus Lore (aka Jobie Hughes and James Frey), and Beautiful Creatures, based on the work of Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, were both box office disappointments, and even Stephenie Meyer's The Host, which just came out last weekend, was considered an under-performer. So what will the fates have in store for The Mortal Instruments? Based on the first book in the series by Cassandra Clare, the new movie stars Lily Collins as Clary Fray, a seemingly...

Beautiful Creatures, based on the novel by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, has been a bit of a disappointment for Warner Bros, which has seen a modest domestic box office of $19,205,917. Around the world, the film has also been a so-so performer, which probably means there won’t be a sequel.
Despite positive reviews, the movie was liked better by the audience than the critics according to Rotten Tomatoes, but we suspect it will perform better on home video. Here’s the release details on the DVD, coming in May.

Another young adult book series made its debut on the big screen with Beautiful Creatures.
Based on the novels by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, the fantasy movie tells the story of Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich, Stoker) and Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert, In Fear). Ethan wants to escape his small town of Gatlin, which he thinks is boring and dead end. His view changes when Lena moves to Gatlin, but she has secrets, namely strange powers that have kept her at a distance from other people in her life.
As Lena and Ethan are drawn together, their romance is threatened, however. Lena’s a Caster and her family has Dark powers. And on her 16th birthday, Lena must do the Claiming, which will decide her fate between Light or Dark.

Steeped in magic and southern lore, Beautiful Creatures is a unique film following a teen love story intermixed with the supernatural. Based on the book by Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia, Richard Lagravanese.s film is gorgeously shot and its script is witty, if you are willing to go on a ridiculous ride (I even preferred it to the book). If you missed out on the movie, you.ll be able to catch Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.s picture when its Blu-ray, DVD, and digital download on May 21. I.ll tout the fun aspects of the film all day, but despite my fervent thumbs up, Beautiful Creatures barely made a mark at the U.S. box office, only bringing in a little over $19 million domestically on a $60 million budget. A sequel may be out of the question at this point, but if you get the chance to check out the...
