- In 1953, Stubbs, Abdul 'Duke' Fakir, Lawrence Payton and Renaldo Benson formed a group called "The Four Aims", and signed a contract with Chess Records. They later changed the name to The Four Tops to avoid confusion with The Ames Brothers.
