Whenever I talk to people from Malaysia or Indonesia, they do not fail to mention that the mainstream cinema of their countries, and essentially the most popular movies, consist mostly of horror and romantic movies. These titles are very rarely exported, to festivals for example, but it seems that in recent years, Netflix, in its constant search for context, has decided to pick up a number, thus allowing them to reach an international audience. Perhaps the reason is the success of directors like Joko Anwar, who has managed to raise the horror genre to rather high levels. Ruben Adrian attempts to do something similar with “Spirited”, by mixing horror with fantasy, in a combination that is quite popular nowadays.

In essence, four different films molded into one, this omnibus was released in 1999, a time that brought Abdurrahman Wahid as president and as the bringer of a new era, a hope that was shattered quite soon, leading to new protests after the tragic events of 1998. The film took three years to complete, commencing pre-production in 1996 during the Suharto rule and was released five months after his resignation. The dead end the youths of the time felt, particularly in the urban centers, is depicted quite eloquently in the collection, which was highly influenced by the Dogme 95 movement.

The script is based on Alberthiene Endah’s novel “Athirah” and takes place in south Celebes, in a society ruled by men. In this place, Puang Aj has set up a thriving trading company that flourishes along with his family. However, when his wife, Athira, gets pregnant, he starts missing more and more from the house, supposedly on business. It is soon revealed that he is about to take a second wife in Jakarta, since polygamy was common in Indonesia for Muslims, from the 1930s to ’70s. This action has tremendous impact on his family, and particularly his wife, who, despite being a child of a fourth wife herself, is devastated. The impact is equal on his eldest son, Ucu, who does not know how to deal with his frustration and resorts to violence. However, both of them manage to overcome their shock, Athira with the help of her mother...

I have to be honest – prior to watching Red And White I knew absolutely nothing of the 1947 uprising by the Indonesian people during the Dutch occupation of the country following World War II. Titled ‘Merah Putih’ in its native language, director Yadi Sugandi’s film, released on Blu-ray and DVD in the UK today, is the first part of a proposed trilogy set during this period.
Two days after the Japanese surrender in August 1945, the Republic of Indonesia declared independence following three and a half years of Japanese occupation. Soon after, the newly founded Republic was invaded by the Dutch, themselves newly liberated from the Nazis. Within two years more than 100,000 Dutch soldiers held Indonesia’s ports, cities and coastlines, all that remained was the mountain and jungle terrain where a rebel army of guerrilla fighters growing in numbers was preparing to fight for “Freedom or Death” until their nation could become independent once again.

Red And White
Stars: Lukman Sardi, Donny Alamsyah, Darius Sinathrya, T.Rifnu Wikana | Written by Conor Allyn, Rob Allyn | Directed by Yadi Sugandi
Set against the historically authentic backdrop of Indonesia’s fight for independence, Red and White is the story of a fictional band of revolutionary cadets fighting against their Dutch oppressors. When their cadet classmates are massacred, the four survivors must overcome their long-fought differences, personality clashes and petty rivalries to band together as guerilla fighters. Leaderless and on the run, the group must strike a blow for Indonesian freedom against the tyrannical Dutch army and free the “red and white” once and for all.
Originally released in Indonesia in time for the countries independence celebrations, Red and White is full of idealism and jingoism and sadly little much else. When I first popped the DVD in I thought I was in for an action packed war movie of Indonesian proportions,...

Due Date (15)
(Todd Phillips, 2010, Us) Robert Downey Jr, Zach Galifianakis, Jamie Foxx, Michelle Monaghan, Danny McBride, Juliette Lewis. 95 mins
Last year's The Hangover was an unexpected, unpredictable delight, but Phillips's follow-up is the exact opposite. Where The Hangover ran around in crazy loops, this travels down a long, straight, well-travelled road where you can see the obstacles and contrivances coming up a mile off. A shame since our odd couple are potentially great – Downey Jr the uptight straight man with a baby on the way; Galifianakis another memorable borderline-sociopath – and there are some laughs. But for every decent joke, there's an unfunny gross-out gag, a "surprise" twist or an unlikely escapade. It feels more like desperation rather than inspiration.
Another Year (12A)
(Mike Leigh, 2010, UK) Jim Broadbent, Ruth Sheen, Lesley Manville. 130 mins
Dependable as ever, kindly Uncle Mike returns with another harvest from the allotment. This one tracks a happy...
