Netflix is developing a “Virgin River” prequel series.
“Virgin River” follows the lives of the residents of the eponymous Northern California town, including nurse practitioner Mel (Breckenridge), bar owner and veteran Jack (Henderson), town doctor Doc (Matheson), mayor Hope (O’Toole) and many more.
If ordered to series, the prequel would follow Mel’s parents: Sarah Jensen, who died when Mel was young, and Everett Reed (John Allen Nelson), who was revealed as Mel’s biological father in Season 6 finale “Father Christmas.”
“Virgin River” premiered in 2019 and is now in production on its sixth season. The series, which consistently dominates the Netflix Top 10 when new seasons are released, is based on Robyn Carr’s novel series of the same name and was developed for television by Sue Tenney. Patrick Sean Smith serves as showrunner and is writing the prequel series.

At its core, Virgin River is a romance. It’s also the quintessential small-town show in that even with two very defined leads, everyone in town is involved in practically every storyline. And like every show of its kind, Sue Tenney’s romantic drama, based on the Virgin River books, has expanded its ensemble of characters as it’s evolved. Time might pass very slowly in Virgin River – these characters are only about to experience their first Christmas since the show premiered in 2019 – but that doesn’t mean there’s a shortage of things happening.

Netflix is returning to Virgin River.
The streaming giant used its time in front of Madison Avenue ad buyers at its first-ever upfront presentation Wednesday in New York to announce that the soapy drama starring Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson will return for a sixth season. The renewal comes as season five of Virgin River is slated to premiere at a to-be-determined date in the fall on the streaming giant.
The drama based on the novels of the same name by Robyn Carr has been a standout performer, according to Netflix’s internal measurement. (The streamer, like others, does not release traditional viewership data.)
Patrick Sean Smith serves as showrunner on season five after taking over for Sue Tenney, who helmed the first four seasons of the Hallmark-like drama. Season five has already wrapped production.

Virgin River fans will have to wait a little longer for Season 5, which will premiere this fall, Netflix announced in conjunction with its first ever upfront presentation Wednesday. And there is more news about the popular romantic drama, starring Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson — it is getting an early Season 6 pickup.
While it may be unexpected, the early renewal is not surprising.

Virgin River has been a huge hit for Netflix since its launch in 2019.
The romantic drama landed a two-season renewal last year, keeping it on the air through its fifth season.
With Virgin River Season 4 recently wrapped, there have been questions about whether the show will end with its fifth season.
Netflix tends to end shows before they get to a fifth season, unless they are global hits.
Thankfully, Jinny Howe, the Netflix drama head sees "longevity and growth" ahead, meaning that there's a good chance the show will continue for a sixth season.
However, Howe wants the show to continue "as long as the audience asks for it and shows up."
“We see with Season 4 that the fandom is very strong and growing in many places as well,” Howe told Deadline.

Serendipity is a key narrative device in romantic storytelling, and it played a role in Jinny Howe’s 2018 move to Netflix after more than 13 years at John Wells Productions. Time moves slowly on Netflix's megahit Virgin River, and it will continue to do so under new showrunner Patrick Sean Smith.
TV Line reported this week that the Greek creator and Chasing Life EP, is taking over from original showrunner Sue Tenney.
“Sue had moved on to other projects, and I’d worked with Netflix on Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings so we had a pre-existing relationship,” Smith said in a statement to TV Line.
“I was already a fan, and I was super excited when they came to me with the possibility," the new showrunner said.
"The cast cares so much about the show and the fans, and they want to put on the best show possible."
"I think they’ve done that for the past four seasons, so it just makes it easier for me to pick up the ball and keep running into Season 5 and beyond," he added.

The third season left off with quite a few lingering questions, including: Whose baby is Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) having — her boyfriend Jack (Martin Henderson) or late husband Mark’s (Daniel Gillies)? Who shot Jack? Was it Brady (Benjamin Hollingsworth), or is he innocent as he claims, even though the gun was in his Jeep? Doc (Tim Matheson) has a grandson?! Thanks to executive producer Sue Tenney, Breckenridge, Henderson, and Hollingsworth, we have some teases. Below, we’ve gathered everything we know about what we can expect from the fourth season. The show follows Melinda as she adjusts to small town life and gets involved with romantic drama, particularly involving local restaurant owner Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson).
The Season 4 trailer picks off where Season 3 left off, with Melinda pregnant and unsure whether or not the baby is Jack’s or if the father is her late husband Mark (Daniel Gillies). The question causes strain in the two’s relationship, especially with Melinda eager to find out who the father is, while Jack tries to dissuade her from taking a paternity test.

Your prayers have been answered, “Virgin River” fans: The romance series has scored a two-season pickup, being renewed for both Seasons 4 and 5 at Netflix, the streaming service said Monday.
Starring Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson, “Virgin River” tells the love story of Mel Monroe (Breckenridge), who answers an ad to work as a midwife and nurse practitioner in the remote Northern California town of Virgin River, thinking it will be the perfect place to start fresh and leave her painful memories behind.
Per Netflix, the 10-episode third season of the romance series, which launched in July, “left fans with more questions about the residents of this small town after a funeral, a fire, a divorce, a hurricane and a new romance.”
Looks like with at least two more seasons to go, those fans will be getting answers — hopefully — and lots and lots more loving between Jack (Henderson) and Mel.

Netflix has given romantic drama Virgin River a two-season pickup, Deadline has confirmed. The large, 20-episode order, typically reserved for the streamer’s biggest hits, follows strong performances of both Season 2 in later 2020-early 2021 and Season 3 this past summer.
In early December, Virgin River ended the The Crown‘s atop the Nielsen weekly streaming rankings. And in July, Virgin River dethroned Manifest to once again rank No. 1 on the Nielsen chart, a spot it held for two weeks.
Highlights in season 3 included a funeral, a fire, a divorce, a hurricane, a new romance and a cliffhanger. The last few minutes of Virgin River‘s third season are, quite frankly, insane.
Following a brief-yet-still-too-long separation, Mel and Jack celebrate their rekindled romance with an invigorating mountain hike, unaware that they’re both concealing explosive secrets from one another. Jack throws his grenade first, getting down on one knee and asking Mel to marry him, which prompts her to retaliate in kind: “I’m pregnant,” she tells him. “And I don’t know if you’re the father.” Boom. No survivors.

Virgin River likes to leave viewers with a number of cliffhangers.
Netflix's hit drama series returned with Virgin River Season 3 last week, and there was a lack of Hope.
Annette O'Toole did not play a big part on the season due to Covid-19, which made it difficult for the actress to appear on the show.
When we left things on Virgin River Season 3 Episode 10, Hope was in hospital with a brain injury following a car accident.
The series left her fate up in the air in true Virgin River fashion, and showrunner Sue Tenney is opening up about it.
"We do move ahead," she told Entertainment Weekly.
"To us, it's the recovery and what she's dealing with – a traumatic brain injury. In a hospital and going through recovery, that's not really where our show lives."
Sounds promising, right?
It sounds like Hope will pull through, but the show...

Welp.
Virgin River Season 3 concluded in winning fashion, leaving us with more cliffhangers than ever.
But, what did we really learn?
The overarching mystery of the season surrounded who killed Jack, and if you read our Virgin River Season 3 Episode 10 review, you know we probably didn't even get the right answer.
Sucks, right?
But Virgin River Season 3 is already topping the Netflix charts, so a fourth season is a safe bet at this stage.
Brady was left looking very guilty at the close of the season, and his portrayer, Ben Hollingsworth, is hoping Brady was not the shooter.
In a new interview with TV Line, the actor said he would like to believe Brady to be innocent.
“Being so close to him, I don’t believe he’s someone that would do that, regardless of his state of mind.”
It's a shame how the reveal was handled, purely because it left Brie stunned,...

"Still waters run deep" would be the perfect tagline for Virgin River's scenic but emotionally fraught third season. From Hope's encounter with a hurricane to Lilly's cancer diagnosis to Mel and Jack's topsy-turvy relationship, the season is chock-full of sucker punches and never-ending twists. But it's the season finale that will undoubtedly leave fans clamoring for a fourth season. Let's talk about what happened in that final episode, as well as the questions that remain unanswered.
What Happens to Preacher?
Preacher's guardianship of Christopher - whose mother, Paige, has been on the run since killing her abusive ex-husband, Wes, in season two - is a central plot point in the third season. Netflix dropped the trailer for the third season of its romance series “Virgin River” on Friday, revealing Jack Sheridan’s (Martin Henderson) fate after the Season 2 finale ended with him bleeding out from a gunshot wound on the floor next to Melinda “Mel” Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge).
Luckily, the video shows us almost immediately that Jack is Ok, but he is going to need some downtime to recover from the injury and Mel is the biggest supporter of him staying in bed — for medical reasons and romantic ones.
Yes, these two lovebirds are finally, officially in a real relationship, which means things are about to get complicated in a different way, as the topic of having a baby together comes up between them — and pretty much everyone else in town. Mel might want to, but she’s obviously still traumatized by the death of her family. Jack might not want to...

Drama, drama, drama: “Virgin River” has been renewed for a third season, Netflix said on Friday.
That news means we’ll get some payoff on those Season 2 cliffhangers, like Jack (Martin Henderson) being shot, the whole Paige/Michelle’s (Lexa Doig) dead-husband’s-twin-brother thing, a child-sized wrench being thrown in Preacher’s (Colin Lawrence) plans to move to San Francisco and become a fancy chef and Doc (Tim Matheson) getting some mysterious — and seemingly bad — health news from another doc in another town.
Yeah, it’s A Lot.
No premiere date has been set for the upcoming Season 3. The second season debuted on Netflix on Nov. 27.
“Virgin River” follows a recently widowed big-city nurse (Alexandra Breckenridge) who moves to the redwood forests of northern California, where she meets an intriguing man (Henderson).
The series also stars Lauren Hammersley and Annette O’Toole. Joining the cast for Season 3 will be Zibby Allen and Stacey Farber.

Based on the bestselling Harlequin book series by Robyn Carr, the contemporary romance story is centered on nurse practitioner Melinda Monroe’s (Alexandra Breckenridge) recent move to the remote California town of Virgin River. Yearning for a fresh start, Monroe soon discovers that small-town living isn’t quite as simple as she expected and that she must learn to heal herself before she can truly make Virgin River her home.
Allen will play Brie, Jack’s (Martin Henderson) sister. Brie is a lawyer who is smart, hard-charging, ballsy and a whole lot of fun.
