- Missed his Olympic dream because of President Jimmy Carter's boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Retired shortly thereafter.

- Worked as an ABC Sports analyst during the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
- Won several gold medals at the World Gymnastics Championships.
- Runs the Kurt Thomas Training Center in Plano, TX.
- Wife Beckie choreographed dance routines for Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu and Dominique Dawes of the 1996 USA Women's Olympic Team.
- 22 January 1999: Inducted into the Indiana State University Athletics Hall of Fame.
- Won a gold medal in floor exercise at the 1978 World Championships.
- Won gold medals in floor exercise and high bar, and a silver medal in all-around at the 1979 World Championships.
