A sci-fi comedy comic about a crime fighting moon is not something I would normally read. But the simply titled Moon caught my eye at a recent comic convention and I caught myself quickly reading through the first two issues smiling from ear to ear.
The first issue give us a rundown of how the Moon reached Earth in 12Ad. Through a ritual that is much more ridiculous and comedic than you would probably imagine, we then quickly fast forward to present day In London, England and Moon is fighting crime with his long time work partner who is ready to go on his first holiday in twenty seven years. But that doesn’t go quite to plan. You will see where the story is going right away but this feels very much like a tiny beginning of something much bigger.

As quickly as some of London's neighborhoods collapsed into chaos, cleanup brigades have sprung to life--thousands of them being guided into action via Twitter and Facebook. "The footage last night of high streets and independent shops burning was terrifying to watch and I wanted to find a way to help that was quick, simple and practical," Dan Thompson, an artist, told the BBC. Thompson created a Twitter campaign, @riotcleanup, that's already amassed 70,000 followers and has inspired a host of similar efforts in other cities:...

The weekend wrap-up of comic-related news items that might not generate a post of their own, but may be of interest...
* Tom Mason interviews Dan Thompson about his new strip Rip Haywire at Comix 411.
* The Comics Reporter: Dan Vado on the recent changes at Diamond:
...the thing that slaps us up in the face most is the raising of the Purchase Order benchmark to $2500. What that means is that every book needs to generate $2500 of revenue (that would mean a little over $6000 in sales at retail based on the discount we give to Diamond) in order to be listed with Diamond. That does not mean that Diamond is going to cancel or not carry books which appear in the Previews but do not reach that benchmark, but it does mean that if you have a line of books which consistently do not meet that mark, you will not be...

Cartoonist Dan Thompson will see his humorous Rip Haywire adventure strip go from the web to newspapers when United Media syndicates the strip as of January 5, 2009.
“Featuring stunning artwork and blending melodrama with deadpan humor, Rip Haywire is not only a loving update of thrilling golden-age comics like Milton Caniff’s Terry and the Pirates, but also a witty satire of the action genre in general,” Ted Rall, United Media’s acquisitions editor said in a release. “Dan Thompson’s masterpiece sends up all manner of macho icons, from action movie heroes like Schwarzenegger to TV shows like 24. I was instantly hooked.”
The syndicate describes the character as “a soldier of fortune cast as a comic version of Indiana Jones, James Bond and Jason Bourne. Along for the ride in his adventures are his cowardly dog, TNT, and his ex-girlfriend Cobra.”
