Jim Henson's classic 1986 fantasy film Labyrinth is getting a prequel story in the form of a comic book coming from Boom! Studios. That comic will explore the original of The Goblin King, who was played by David Bowie in the movie. Thanks to EW we have some art to share with you along with some information on the comic. They say:
In Henson’s film, the Jennifer Connelly-played teenager Sarah travels through the Labyrinth to save her baby brother Toby from the clutches of Jareth. In the comic series, the Goblin King recounts his beginnings to Toby, introducing readers to Jareth’s mother and father in 18th-century Venice.
I know it's not much to go off of, but I'm intrigued and curious to see how this comic turns out. The Jim Henson Company is involved with the development of the comic and Lisa Henson, the daughter of Jim,...

News flash! Time passes!
When I was a child, I was mesmerized by the very concept of time. How was it discovered? Why are units of time, like minutes and hours and days, all measured in multiples of 6? What was there before time? Could time ever end? If so, what would replace it? Eventually, these thoughts made me throw up, and I would have to make myself think about other stuff.
But here’s the thing: Time happens. Whether you think about it or not.
I am reminded of this when I look at the list of contributors to Mine! A Comics Collection to Benefit Planned Parenthood. In addition to talents like Neil Gaiman and Jill Thompson, there are a bunch of people whom I know personally on the list but there are also a whole lot I don’t know.
For example, there’s Gabby Rivera. And Tee Franklin.

Last Friday, my pal Larry Hama invited me to a “friends and family” screening of the first two episodes of Marvel’s The Defenders. I mean the new series debuting on Netflix today, not the classic television show, The Defenders, the source of many many jokes made during the screening.
Also in attendance: Tony Isabella, Michael Gaydos and his adorable son, Arvell Jones, and the families of Archie Goodwin and George Tuska. Plus a bunch of current Marvel folks who had probably already seen the whole series, but who were gracious hosts.
Before the screening began, I was feeling pretty warm and fuzzy about seeing so many of my old friends and meeting people whose work I admired. Hence, I was psyched to enjoy two hours in a comfy chair in a screening room.
Mostly, I had a great time. I have a huge crush on Charlie Cox, the beautiful man who plays Matt Murdock.

The past few weeks I’ve been talking a lot about other people’s Kickstarter campaigns. This week, here at ComicMix, I’m here to talk about our Kickstarter campaign that is active right now. That’s right; ComicMix LLC is working on a new project – a major comics collection to benefit Planned Parenthood.
I’m going to get into that in a minute.
This project has been in the works for nearly two years now. It started back in December of 2015. Fellow ComicMix columnist and my co-editor Molly Jackson and I were at Mia Pizza in Astoria NY. I was a mere two months into my tenure as a columnist here and we were discussing something we could do. We immediately thought of doing a comics anthology. We had a lot of ideas we were throwing around, including a throwback Crime Does Not Pay style anthology.
Eventually, Molly and...

The Eisner Awards were handed out last Friday, and I have to say, I’m feeling just a little bit smug.
No, I didn’t win anything. There is no Eisner Award for the Best Procrastinating by a Writer. However, quite a few of the prizes went to people and projects that I championed as an Eisner judge this year, selecting the nominees.
I’m not going to tell you which ones I’m talking about because to do so implies that I met with resistance. (You’ll have to get me drunk the next time we’re together.) As I said before, talking about the selection process the committee used, “I can say that none of us got all of our first choices, but all of us got some of them.” In other words, we had different tastes and different criteria, and that is as it should be. We talked,...

This weekend sees London Super Comic Convention return to the capital’s ExCel Centre for two days of good old-fashioned comics-related fun (and the inevitable post-con hangover).
Lscc will feature signings and panels from comics superstars like Sara Pichelli, Brian Bolland, Jill Thompson, and Howard Chaykin alongside the usual embarrassment of riches to be found at the small press and independent tables.
[Bias interruptus: personally, I’m very much looking forward to seeing what John Allison, Rachael Smith and Adam Cadwell have on offer this year, along with friends of (and contributor to) Nerdly, Jack Kirby and Mat Barnett of Outfield Press!]
Nerdly will be on hand to bring you interviews with creators and other highlights from Lscc in much the same way we delivered our coverage of Thought Bubble 2015, which you can see below:
Tickets are still on sale for single days and the whole weekend, which you can buy here. We hope to see you there but if not, stay tuned to Nerdly for all the comics goodness we can fit onto an overworked iPhone.

The Diary of a Teenage Girl is the latest comic book movie to feature a heroine, but women are still woefully underrepresented in the genre overall
Not many comic book movies start with a scruffy, smiling 15-year-old girl confessing: “I had sex today … Holy shit.” If we met Minnie, the protagonist of Marielle Heller’s adaptation of Phoebe Gloeckner’s 2002 graphic novel The Diary of a Teenage Girl in any other comic book adaptation, she’d most likely be the high school siren and love interest. If she’s lucky she might be a feisty foil in the mould of Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman or Anna Kendrick’s Stacey Pilgrim in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. But she wouldn’t have thoughts or a movie of her own.
The forthcoming films of Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel are long overdue, and hopefully will fare better than a lot of other past big-budget,...

The iconic comic book character, beloved by millions around the globe for over 70 years, will sacrifice himself heroically while saving the life of a friend in the pages of July’s Life With Archie #36, the final issue in the flash-forward series, which spotlights Archie’s adventures after high school and college.
“We’ve been building up to this moment since we launched Life With Archie five years ago, and knew that any book that was telling the story of Archie’s life as an adult had to also show his final moment,” said Archie Comics Publisher/Co-ceo Jon Goldwater. “Archie has and always will represent the best in all of us—he’s a hero, good-hearted, humble and inherently honorable. If you’ve been following my columns this month here and here, you know I’m on a tirade. I don’t like it that women are still considered an afterthought in the comics industry, especially as our industry is represented at comics and pop culture conventions.
And so, I want to shine a spotlight on various shows, and discuss what they’re doing wrong, and what they’re doing right.
In my last column here, I wrote a lot about ReedPop, the folks who put on big shows in New York and Chicago, among other things. They only had women creators as about ten percent of their featured comics guests. Since then, several people have alerted me to the fact that C2E2 is highlighting their female guests in their advertising. This is a great thing. I commend them for it.
However ….

The Sandman: Overture #1
Writer: Neil Gaiman
Artist: J.H. Williams III
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Letterer: Todd Klein
The art on The Sandman was always one of its biggest strengths and potentially greatest weaknesses. As an early book that treated artists as interchangeable parts, the book succeeded on how well the artist for an issue or an arc was able to bring to life the sheer magic of Neil Gaiman’s stories. Thanks to the carefully curated eye of editor Karen Berger and Gaiman, most of the artists measured up to the story, turning the tale of a mopey god of dreams into a personally movingl story about family and responsibility. Charles Vess, Jill Thompson, Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg, Kelly Jones, Marc Hempel and countless other artists brought to life the fantastic concepts that Gaiman created almost out of nothing. The Sandman was great. It was special. And then it ended.

So this is the story told in the Florida courtroom.
George Zimmerman looks out his window. He sees Treyvon Martin walking down the block. Zimmerman picks up his gun, goes outside, gets in his car, and hunts Martin down. Zimmerman finds Martin and confronts him. Martin is carrying a dangerous bag of Skittles. The two men get into an altercation. Zimmerman shoots Martin dead. Zimmerman tells the police that Treyvon Martin started the altercation and that he, Zimmerman, was “standing his ground.”
Can you pick out what is wrong in the story?*
• • • • •
As I was saying…
I started to regret ever taking on the whole assignment. I felt I was turning out crap. I was embarrassed. I was sad. I worried about my future as a comics writer. And finally…
I got fed up.
I will never forget the day it happened. I was arguing with Alan. And something in me simply exploded…...

DC Comics releases what I consider to be the best of the controversial prequels to one of the most celebrated graphic novels of all time with Before Watchmen: Ozymandias /Crimson Corsair Deluxe Edition. The hardcover collection contains issues 1 through 6 of Before Watchmen: Ozymandias, the entire run of Crimson Corsair stories, and the Dollar Bill one-shot. The Crimson Corsair storyline spread out across several of the different Before Watchmen titles.
The real highlight of the Before Watchmen: Ozymandias /Crimson Corsair Deluxe Edition is Adrian Veidt's backstory. Watchmen editor Len Wein takes a character I found to be the least interesting in the original graphic novel and completely change my mind about him. When the entire prequel event came to a close, Before Watchmen: Ozymandias reigned supreme as my favorite title. Wein digs so deep into the character's psyche and gives the reader an insight into how a man's ego can drive...

The comics industry has taken to Twitter in response to Karen Berger's departure from Vertigo. It was revealed this week that the veteran editor, who has worked for the imprint's publisher DC Comics for 33 years, will be stepping down from her senior vice president role in March 2013. "There was a time years back when I might have stopped reading comics if it wasn't for Karen Berger and what she built at Vertigo," said Thor: God of Thunder writer Jason Aaron. "Karen Berger gave me my first DC Comics job on Wonder Woman," said veteran artist Jill Thompson. "I'm happy to say I pencilled the first Vertigo issue of Sandman." "For the comprehension impaired, I have nothing but good things to say about Karen Berger and her legendary reign," wrote Daredevil's (more)...

Well, I haven’t heard Adam Sandler’s Chanukah Song yet – the Festival of Lights starts at sunset on Saturday, December 8th – but I did hear a rant about the War on Christmas on the radio the other day.
Yep, it’s that time of year again. Hallmark Channel has preempted Little House On The Prairie for sickly sweet (and cheaply made) movies with a Christmas theme. Wal-Mart and Target are pushing black Friday – great name for a villain, by the way – and have introduced something called pre-black Friday. Christmas catalogs have been smushed into my mailbox, and the department store halls are beginning to be decked with boughs of holly, fa-la-la-la, la-la-la-la I’ve even caught some Christmas commercials on the TV (although the deluge is yet to come.)
So this year ye olde editor Mike Gold and Big Kahuna Glenn Hauman decided to get in on the act...

P Craig Russell has announced the artistic lineup for The Graveyard Book. The artist will adapt Neil Gaiman's Carnegie Medal-winning all-ages book into two graphic novels. Jill Thompson, Michael Golden, David Lafuente, Kevin Nowlan, Tony Harris, Galen Showman and Scott Hampton will join him on the adaptation, which was first mentioned by Gaiman in the summer. "I'm doing the scripts and the layouts for the entire book and the finishes for one or two of the stories and then seven other artists [are] doing finishes over my layouts," Russell told Comic Book Resources. Back in the 1990’s, Neil Gaiman took concept art by Sandman artist Jill Thompson (The Scary Godmother, Magic Trixie) to pitch to Warner Bros Pictures in hopes for a feature film adaptation. Though that film was never realized, you now have the opportunity to see the art that Thompson drew for the Sandman storyboard and even buy one of the twenty-seven pieces through Cadence Comic Art.
Check out a few of the pieces for sale below and click here to see them all and see if you’d like to buy a piece.

Comic writer Neil Gaiman tweeted out a link to some great Sandman concept art illustrations created by Jill Thompson. The art was used for a movie pitch that Gaiman delivered to Warner Bros. a few years ago. The studio obviously didn't bite. The art is now on sale for collectors to purchase. I imagine the pitch Gaimen gave went right over the studio executives heads. Hope you enjoy the art!

Now we have no way of knowing exactly what would have ended up in the movie had it happened of course, as it seems Gaiman was pitching elements from his entire Sandman saga if these pics are anything to go by. But a good chunk of them seem to focus on the "Brief Lives" arc, in which Dream and Delirium seek out their long lost brother Destruction. Fan favorite characters such as The Corinthian, Fiddlers Green, and John Constantine are also depicted.. Update: Gaiman has reveled that the reason the pics cover so much of his run on Sandman, is that they were pitching for a sequence of 3 movies. This is only a sample, you can check out the rest of the great Jill Thompson Sandman art here - and if you have a spare few hundred knicker lying around you can purchase a print too.

Excision
Written and Directed by Richard Bates Jr.
USA 2012 Fantasia imdb
There were two films at Fantasia this year that took me on trips that I didn’t want to go on. The first was the winner of Fantasia’s Satoshi Kon Award for Achievement in Animation The King of Pigs. The second was Excision. Both films are about outsiders in high school, bullying and school as hell. The difference is that The King of Pigs announces almost from its opening frames that this will not be a pleasant journey, while Excision promises a disturbing dream of a journey, only truly turning nightmarish in the final twenty minutes.
To put it another way, I quite enjoyed the trip that Excision was taking me on, until I reached its destination and I hated that arrival so much that it made me hate the journey – made me reevaluate and hate the entire film.

In an effort anger the Internet – and save me the time of writing too much – I figured this week I’d take a trip into Fantasy Land. Here is a list, simple and to-the-point, of five books I’d love to see hit the stands. This probably won’t happen unless we’re on Earth 29.
The Avengers: Written by Geoff Johns, Art by Peter Krause.
With his ability to handle a multitude of characters (see his run on Justice Society, or to a lesser degree, Justice League) and draw from countless years of continuity to craft original tales, John’s would deftly deliver a truly epic arc for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Peter Krause (of Irredeemable fame) has an amazing ability to show emotion, and a wide range of your more traditional superheroes. Put together? I think the fans would assemble in droves for a chance to see the premier...

Willie Garson, who played Carrie Bradshaw's loveable friend Stanford Blatch on "Sex and the City," is probably a little sick of being asked about the new prequel extension of the "Satc" franchise, "The Carrie Diaries." After all, he's not in it.
The CW's new pilot is set to tell the story of a young Carrie Bradshaw as she finishes high school and though it would be oddly anachronistic to have Garson on that show, he says he wouldn’t turn it down.
“If they called I would do it,” he said on the red carpet for the Madison Square Garden debut of Cirque du Soleil's "Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour."
Though fans can catch Garson on USA's “White Collar” these days, Garson says that he is still Stanford and probably always will be.

Katie Findlay and Ellen Wong have landed roles in The CW's pilot The Carrie Diaries. The drama, which is a prequel to Sex and the City, is based on the book of the same name by Candace Bushnell and focuses on a teenage Carrie Bradshaw as she attends high school in 1980s Connecticut. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory star AnnaSophia Robb has already signed up for the lead role of Carrie. She will now be joined by Findlay and Wong in the project, Deadline reports. Wong will play Carrie's best friend in high school, Jill Thompson. Also known as 'The Mouse', Jill is said to be intelligent (more)...

I first saw Nexus at one of those ancient Chicago Minicons we used to run at the beautiful and even ancienter Congress Hotel. The Minicon was an intense show held roughly every month, no matter the weather or the proximity of the latest Chicago Bears game. We had about 75 dealers tables, admission cost 75¢, our dealers and attendees drove in from a 350 mile radius, and the whole thing was over within five hours; less, if the Bears were playing that Sunday.
Our guests came from a similar radius, and frequently you’d see Jill Thompson, John Byrne, John Ostrander, Joe Staton, Paul Kupperberg, and a dozen or more at the tables near the entrance… as well as more than a few who were breaking into the business. Mike Baron, who lived about 80 miles north in Madison Wisconsin, was one such newbee, and when they launched their magazine-sized Nexus #1, he and artist...

Current WWE Champion Cm Punk and comic book artist Jill Thompson could be about to collaborate on a new comic book series together if recent back-and-forth Twitter messages are anything to go by. Punk of course is a known comic book fan and is regularly tweeting about the stuff he is reading and often comes to the ring quoting the immortal line from The Thing – “It’s clobberin’ time!”.
The Twitter back and forth started when Jill Thompson, a known wrestling fan who has created attire designs for Daniel Bryan and worked illustrations for Mick Foley in the past, was asked in a tweet by John M. Coker as to whether she had ever attempted to hire Punk to write a series she could draw;
Punk and Thompson tweeted that it was a great idea. The WWE wrestler even said to talk to him after the New Year “to make it happen.

At the end of the last chapter, I suspected Delirium driving a car would lead to some interesting adventures. In life, someone driving like that would be terrifying, but in our story here it’s hilarious, partly because I assumed she wouldn’t kill anybody, and so it was okay to laugh. Upset some people, certainly; cause some minor crashes even, yes, but if she wreaked so much havoc that anyone died, it would create a tone for the story that could be unsettling in an unhelpful way, making the comedy too dark to be comedic. The traffic on page four is akimbo, but spaciously so. If Delirium had tried driving in, say, Boston, where the roads are often narrow, confusing, and terribly overcrowded, the results might have been a bit different.
As it is, though, the movement from page nine to page ten is one of the funniest moments...

Before we get all philosophical and meditative (which we will), let’s begin by considering the many forms of the human and non-human characters in “Parliament of Rooks”. A lot of credit goes, I expect, to penciller Jill Thompson, who moves from the very thin lines of Lyta and her son Daniel, figures in a world of primarily horizontal and vertical shapes, to the rougher, thicker lines and shapes of the Dreaming, where the characters need to align with their representations from previous Sandman issues and from their incarnations in other comics. In addition to all that — enough to give even a talented artist a headache — somebody, most likely either Thompson or Gaiman, decided to depict Abel’s story of the early days of Death and Dream as a mix of anime and what looks to my eyes like some sort of Saturday morning TV cartoon show from the ’80s...

Whenever I pass along announcements about comics making the leap to television or the movie theaters, most of the time it’s super hero-related or some type of crime procedural. Rarely is it anything that would be considered a surprise. This though, is a feel-good announcement. Dark Horse comic, Beasts of Burden will pounce off the pages to become an animated film.
Director Andrew Adams (Shrek, Chronicles of Narnia) is spear-heading the project with partner Aron Warner and their production company Strange Weather Films. They will team up with Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Entertainment and Reel FX will handle the animation. THR broke the news on Tuesday afternoon.
Coming from the talents of writer Evan Dorkin (Dork, Milk and Cheese) and artist Jill Thompson (Scary Godmother, Sandman), Beasts of Burden follows a pack of anthropomorphic dogs and cat who take on the supernatural evils that manifest in their Burden Hill neighborhood.

Like dogs? Like ghosts? How about ghost dogs? If you’re finding yourself saying "Oh God Yes Yes Yes", then get ready for Beasts of Burden.
Chronicles of Narnia director Andrew Adamson is set to produce a new CGI animated feature based on the comic Beasts of Burden by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson. The film is to be made with the support and involvement of Dark Horse Entertainment.
The comic series of Beasts of Burden revolve around a small, albeit heroic, gang of dogs and one cat which have taken it upon themselves to defend the community of Burden Hill from any encroaching supernatural forces. The storyline is a serial and so the ghostly foes of the dogs are widely varied, apparently including werewolves, witches, giant demonic frogs, and – of course – ghosts. Among the heroes are Pugs, Red, Whitey, Ace, and 'the Orphan', a homeless kitty that tags along and helps.

Depending on which side of the fence you sit, this news will either leave you feeling somewhat jubilant, or a little disconcerted. However, for those of you unfamiliar with Beasts of Burden, allow me to enlighten you.
Originally introduced in anthologies The Dark Horse Book of Hauntings, Witchcraft, and Monsters, Beasts of Burden follows the paranormal jaunt of six investigators through the idyllic town of Burden. Yes, you heard me correct - this comic book series, created by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson, combined paranormal investigation with anthropomorphic pets, offering the reader a fresh approach in what is often seen as a somewhat diluted genre.

Eisner award winning, and one of my personal favorite, comic book series Beasts of Burden is making its way to the big screen care of Andrew Adamson, director of The Chronicles of Narnia and Shrek.
