Unable to pull a second season out of its hat, the Houdini and Doyle TV show has been cancelled after its first and only season on Fox. The mystery drama series stars Michael Weston as Harry Houdini, Stephen Mangan as Arthur Conan Doyle, and Rebecca Liddiard as Constable Adelaide Stratton. The cast also includes Tim McInnerny, Adam Nagaitis, and Diana Quick. Fox confirmed the Houdini & Doyle cancellation to Deadline, which cites poor ratings as the reason. In the series, fictionalized versions of real life figures -- magician and skeptic Houdini and Sherlock Holmes author and paranormal enthusiast Doyle -- investigate unsolved crimes of a seemingly supernatural nature. The show was created by David Hoselton and David N. Titcher. The writing staff also includes: Carl Binder, Melissa R. Byer, Treena...

Period pieces are hard. Period pieces incorporating actual historical figures can be harder. Not only are there a slew of details the producers must get right in order for the audience to buy in, but maintaining a story that adds a fresh sense of must-watch TV is a tall order indeed. Enter the Canadian co-produced drama “Houdini & Doyle,” from co-creators David Hoselton and David Titcher, and producer David Shore (“House”). Like that ad campaign from the early ’80s where diners at fine restaurants had their coffee replaced with Folgers crystals, Fox’s Houdini & Doyle attempts to satisfy viewers who gravitate to high-minded, British crime stories with a period flair (and/or have an unrequited craving for PBS’ all-too-infrequent Sherlock).

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini's friendship is set to be explored in a new light on the small screen.
Houdini and Doyle is a ten-part supernatural crime drama inspired by the pair's real-life friendship, reports Deadline.
ITV has picked up the series in the UK, while Fox will air episodes in the Us, and Shaw Media will handle the show in Canada.
Illusionist Houdini and Sherlock Holmes writer Doyle found friendship via their mutual interest in spiritualism, although they had a bitter public fall-out when Doyle refused to believe that Houdini's stunts were simply illusions.
The series will see the duo work together on supernaturally-tinged crimes, despite their differences.
House creator David Shore is executive producer on the project alongside his former colleague David Hoselton, who will serve as writer. David Titcher (The Librarians) is also writing Houdini and Doyle.

So long, "Weird Desk!"
According to THR, the paranormal "Weird Desk," which was ordered to series just last week, has been shelved by ABC.
ABC's "Weird Desk" -- which centered on a top-secret organization that worked above the office of the president, according to Deadline -- was originally set to air in summer 2013 and would have joined new female-skewing soap "Mistresses" and Canadian cop drama "Rookie Blue."
THR reports that the series' sudden halt is probably due to the fact that that "Weird Desk," written by "Stargate's" Carl Binder and "The Librarian's" David Titcher, couldn't be produced fast enough for a summer premiere while keeping the cost low.
What do you think about "Weird Desk" getting yanked from the schedule so suddenly? Sound off in the comments.

Less than one week after greenlighting a new series to join scripted soap Mistresses on the summer schedule, ABC has shelved paranormal drama Weird Desk, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. It is believed that the decision to halt Weird Desk was due to the inability to fast-track the series to begin production in time for a summer launch and at a lower cost, a significant point for an original show airing in the summer months. The 13-episode hourlong investigative series hailed from Stargate's Carl Binder and The Librarian's David Titcher, with Tom Mazza and Maggie Murphy also executive

Exclusive: That was quick — a week after ABC gave a 13-episode straight-to-series order to paranormal investigation drama Weird Desk, the network has put the project on hold. It will no longer be produced for summer as planned, and its status will be revisited after pilot season. While ABC brass had liked the Weird Desk concept and script for awhile, by the time the project got a green light, it proved hard to get production up and running fast enough for a summer launch while keeping the cost low, an important factor for a summer original series. Additionally, I hear there was concern, at Marvel and internally at ABC, that Weird Desk may be similar to Joss Whedon’s high-profile ABC pilot S.H.I.E.L.D., an offshoot of blockbuster vengers franchise. There is speculation about objections from Marvel, one of Disney Co.’s most prized possessions, to the new project. As a result,...

After pulling the plug on short lived supernatural series '666 Park Avenue' it seems ABC are pinning their hopes for the Summer of 2013 on a new and extremely familiar sounding concept. 13 episodes have been ordered for 'Weird Desk', a series revolving around a secret organisation that takes all those 'kooky' cases that are a little too out there for the CIA and Nsa. This of course involves supernatural, paranormal and extra-terrestrial cases. So, a tad similar to 'The X-Files' methinks especially as the two leads are played by an 'obstinate, socially inept and brilliant man' and his female partner. Hmmm a Mulder and Scully for the new generation? Are we ready, do we need them? ABC certainly seem to think so. Tom Mazza and Maggie Murphy will serve as executive producers. Carl Binder ('Stargate') and David Titcher will pen the series....

While fans are still speculating about a possible "X-Files" revival, ABC appears to be getting ahead of the trend. According to Deadline, the network has ordered a new paranormal investigation show, titled "Weird Desk," straight to series for Summer 2013.

Based on the alleged real-life mysteries from this world and beyond, it centers on the workings of a clandestine organization rumored to be named “Weird Desk.” Working above the levels of top secret and above the office of the President, the unit is the destination for mysterious intelligence rerouted from the CIA and Nsa. Tasked with investigating and solving occurrences of the paranormal, supernatural and sometimes extra-terrestrial, “Weird Desk” is led by Morgan, an obstinate, socially inept and brilliant man who would now be dead if it weren’t for his special forces trained partner, Rosetta.

Numerous project are being presented at Cannes with the hope of being picked up for development or distribution, and a new report reveals that a TV series based on Stephen King’s The Lawnmower Man is in the works.
Park Entertainment is pitching 26 one-hour episodes for a live action TV series, according to Moviehole. It is said that David Titcher has written the pilot episode and that the tone of the series falls “somewhere between action-adventure and science-fiction.”

Are you ready to see the return of Jobe? Before you answer that, know that Park Entertainment has packaged, and is trying to find a home for, a television series based on The Lawnmower Man films. Hmm, sounds like a natural fit for SyFy.
According to Moviehole, Park is pushing its project heavily at Cannes this week and David Titcher (The Librarian) has apparently penned the pilot.
The Lawnmower Man was a feature film, starring Pierce Brosnan and Jeff Fahey, released in 1992 and loosely based on the short story by Stephen King.
Actually, forget the use of the word "loosely," the film and short story have nothing to do with one another other than the fact that they both featured a lawnmower man, still, that didn't stop the distributor from using Stephen King's name when the film was released.

New York -- Cartoon Network is taking a big step into live-action, prepping a slew of programs that represent the channel's largest slate in a long time.
The channel has more than a dozen projects in development including projects from writers David Titcher ("The Librarian"), Paul Dini ("Lost") and Mike Werb ("Face/Off," "The Mask"), among others. Chief content officer Rob Sorcher said that the network could possibly go to pilot with three of the projects this year, then launch a night of live-action programming sometime in 2010.
"That would absolutely be a win for us," Sorcher said Thursday.
The channel opened a Burbank-based scripted development series about a year ago. Last year, the network said it would pursue two avenues with live-action scripted series -- one in fantasy, action and adventure and the other in comedy.
"This is part of the overall expansion of programming at Cartoon Network," Sorcher said.
