Cliff Twemlow is an obscure figure even by British B-movie standards, a handsome, no-nonsense former Manchester nightclub doorman who attempted to create a Hollywood of the north in the early ’80s and ’90s. Born in 1937, a fact he tried to cloud for many years, he was something of a renaissance man: He acted in soaps, he composed lucrative library music, he wrote a novel about a killer pike, and, after a wounding experience with a botched adaptation of his autobiographical novel Tuxedo Warrior, he decided to become a filmmaker himself.
His first production, G.B.H. (1982), was shot on video — the grainy, ugly, analog kind — and it rode on the coattails of the recent hit The Long Good Friday. Twemlow starred as a handsome, no-nonsense Manchester nightclub doorman, hired to protect a local nightclub from a protection racket after returning from a stretch in prison.

Joan Collins in 'The Bitch': Sex tale based on younger sister Jackie Collins' novel. Author Jackie Collins dead at 77: Surprisingly few film and TV adaptations of her bestselling novels Jackie Collins, best known for a series of bestsellers about the dysfunctional sex lives of the rich and famous and for being the younger sister of film and TV star Joan Collins, died of breast cancer on Sept. 19, '15, in Los Angeles. The London-born (Oct. 4, 1937) Collins was 77. Collins' tawdry, female-centered novels – much like those of Danielle Steel and Judith Krantz – were/are immensely popular. According to her website, they have sold more than 500 million copies in 40 countries. And if the increasingly tabloidy BBC is to be believed (nowadays, Wikipedia has become a key source, apparently), every single one of them – 32 in all – appeared on the New York Times' bestseller list. (Collins' own site claims that a mere 30 were included.) Sex...

'Lord Montagu' documentary. 'Lord Montagu' documentary: Anti-gay persecution victim became successful entrepreneur and National Motor Museum founder On first blush, the life of a Lord of the Realm, a Peer to the English monarchy, a child born with an actual silver spoon in his mouth and an ancient estate to inherit, would seem wholly irrelevant to a commoner such as myself – and an American, no less. Yet the life of the man once known as Little Lord Montagu, as captured in director Luke Korem's titular documentary, Lord Montagu, is one that fascinates both for its storied historical context and for the way the Little Lord lived it. Which required a good deal of bravery, ingenuity, and affection for the “common people” and the things we love. At this writing, Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, is 88 years old. The film about his Lordship begins when he is only two years old,...

Mark Hartley's reimagining of cult '70s shocker Patrick hits UK DVD shelves today, 11 August, titled Evil Awakens. With this in mind, we recently cornered Hartley as he took a break in London to pick his brain about the film, his feature helming debut.
Until now, Mark has been most widely known for his directorial work on music videos and documentaries such as Not Quite Hollywood and Machete Maidens Unleashed. When quizzed about the circumstances that led to finally getting in the director's chair for a narrative feature film, he tells us, "Well, I had never ever planned, or had any ambition, to make documentaries."
He elaborates, "That kind of happened by accident... I had always intended to make narrative features, and it was just a very difficult process. My background is actually music videos – I’ve made like a hundred and fifty music videos in Australia prior to...

Exclusive: Electric Sky has acquired international broadcast rights to Luke Korem’s documentary and will launch sales at Mipcom in October.
Lord Montagu offers what the filmmakers claim to be the inside story of one of Britain’s more controversial 20th century aristocrats, Lord Edward Montagu of Beaulieu.
Oliver Tobias narrates the film, which looks at Montagu’s entry into Parliament at the age of 22 and his imprisonment three years later in 1954 for “homosexual offences.”
The sole heir to a 7,000-acre English estate emerged from the scandal of “The Montagu Case” a year later and revived his fortunes when he turned his estate into a tourist attraction.
The film features commentary from Prince Michael of Kent, the Duke of Devonshire, historian Sir Roy Strong, Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason and former F1 champion Sir Jackie Stewart.
“Lord Montagu delves into a seemingly privileged, glamorous lifestyle, offering a glimpse into the world of the aristocracy that so many...

Aleister Crowley. When it comes to being infamous, few names come to mind more than his. Let's face it; the dude was evil and batshit nuts! The perfect fodder for a horror film, and there's indeed a new one on the way!

Giuseppe Patroni Griffi deserves attention. His chic revenger's tragedy 'Tis Pity She's a Whore (1971) is one possible way in: you get Charlotte Rampling, an Ennio Morricone score that's just a Jacobean riff on his spaghetti western stylings, lashings of sex and gore, and a design sensibility which pays some kind of lip service to period while being deliriously seventies at all times, so that it would not be too surprising if Oliver Tobias donned a set of sixteenth century tinted shades, or a tie-dyed doublet.
An alternative entry point is Identikit (1974), Aka The Driver's Seat, from the novel of that name by Muriel Spark. It's the tale of a mysterious woman wandering through a nameless city, hoping to rendezvous with "a friend" whom she's apparently never met. In a parallel plot thread, apparently taking place a day or two later, the police are interrogating everyone she's come into contact with.

Actor and children's television writer known for Catweazle, Robin of Sherwood and The Borrowers
Richard Carpenter, who has died of a blood clot aged 82, brought intelligent, imaginative entertainment to generations of young television viewers through the fantasy series he created. After almost two decades as an actor, he found his first success as a writer with Catweazle (1970-71), starring Geoffrey Bayldon as a dishevelled, eccentric, 11th-century magician transported to the 20th century. Comic misunderstandings were mixed with slapstick as Catweazle befriended a farmer's son, Carrot (played by Robin Davies), who unravelled for him modern-day mysteries such as "electrickery" and the "telling-bone".
In the second series, Carpenter had Catweazle searching for symbols of the 13 signs of the Magic Zodiac and being taken in by another boy, Cedric (Gary Warren), at his parents' country estate. "I've always been interested in the person who is outside society," said Carpenter in a 1990 interview with the magazine Time Screen.

Actor Oliver Tobias looks set for a second marriage - to a woman 27 years his junior. Tobias, 53, is best known for his role opposite Joan Collins in trashy 70's flick Stud, The (1978), where he played a toyboy waiter who sleeps with the wife of his rich boss. But Tobias insists his relationship with 26-year-old model Araballa Zamoyska has nothing to do with age - in fact the age difference is "totally irrelevant" to him. He says, "She has an old head on young shoulders and I find it disrespectful when people comment on it." And the actor, currently starring in hit London West End musical "La Cava", would definitely consider marriage to the blonde bombshell. He admits, "I'd like to get married again and I'd like to become a father again, but I want to do it properly... I think it's great to get down on one knee and ask your good lady if she will marry you."...
