- During World War II, he served in the US Navy in the Phillippines.

- Began with American-International Pictures in the late 1950s. he eventually became AIP's head of production, making a series of low-budget features aimed primarily at the teenage market.

- Like the better-known Roger Corman, Topper was nothing if not frugal: one of his films, The Diary of a High School Bride (1959) he shot in seven days for just $80,000.
