Mubi's retrospective Vandeweerd: Filming the Invisible is showing January 14 – February 20, 2018.Pierre-Yves VandeweerdWhen documentaries intersect with the practice of anthropology, formal and ethical questions can arise. How can Westerners depict and explore complex traditions and trauma outside of their realm of experience without reducing their cinematic subjects to merely an appearance as a talking head? The work of Belgium filmmaker Pierre-Yves Vandeweerd proposes a more metaphysical strategy; with voice-overs, folkloric texts, documents, music and long-duration portraits weaved into complex and vivid forms. Having filmed in remote locations across the Caucasus, France, and Africa, and frequently exploring the psychological effects of war, genocide and mental illness, Vandeweerd’s work has often been referred to as “poetic” on festival circuits. The elements and strategies that his films weave together constitute an attempt to connect with “the invisible,” qualities that the traditional anthropological modes of inquiry cannot account for1, with productions lasting several...

The Open City Documentary Festival, taking place across London between the 5th and 10th of September 2017, will present three films by Belgian filmmaker Pierre-Yves Vandeweerd: Lost Land (2011), For the Lost (2014) and The Eternals (2017). The films, shot mostly on 16mm and Super 8, are poetic essays exploring the lives of those affected by exile, conflict, loss, and the ecology of harsh environments, hauntingly soundtracked by British Avant-Garde musician Richard Skelton. Ahead of the festival I interviewed Vandeweerd concerning the aesthetic and thematic connections between his films, his anthropological approach and the role of language in his cinema.Notebook: You’ve studied anthropology, amongst other subjects, and you’ve worked as a teaching assistant in a Philosophy and Literature department. What led you to utilize filmmaking as an extension of your research? Pierre-yves Vandeweerd: The first area I worked in as an anthropologist, at the beginning of the 90s, was Niger in West Africa.

The Masked MonkeysThe cutting edge of cinema culture at this moment is not what’s premiering in competition at Cannes or picking up the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Rather, it is at the quietly flourishing but deeply influential genre of film festival focusing on new and adventurous work in documentary filmmaking. More than any red carpet extravaganza, this type of festival is consistently challenging audiences to expand their understanding of how the art of cinema explores reality and how reality complicates moviemaking. Whether big, like Copenhagen’s Cph:dox, or smaller, like Missouri’s True/False Film Fest, these events go further than the traditional and staid vision of festivals devoted to documentary film, whose emphasis is above all on the camera as a bland tool to invisibly tell a nonfiction story, and instead present more closely curated programs that showcase the infinite nuance and complexity—not to mention shades...

Tonislav Hristov’s Love & Engineering is to open the 20th edition of the Visions du Réel documentary film festival.
The film about a Bulgarian computer engineer searching for a formula to create irresistible seductive power for four desperate digital geeks searching for analogue love will open this year’s festival in Nyon, Switzerland tomorrow (April 24). The festival runs from April 25 to May 3.
The German-Finnish-Bulgarian co-production won the Audience Award at DocPoint Helsinki and is set to be screened at Hot Docs Toronto and the Tribeca Film Festival this month.
Nyon’s 2014 edition will see the festival celebrating two anniversaries: in 1969, the Festival international de cinéma Nyon was founded by the later Berlinale director Moritz de Hadeln, and the name change to Visions du Réel was taken by present artistic director Luciano Barisone’s predecessor Jean Perret in 1995
