A serene British countryside is rocked by a series of brutal murders with a common thread; each victim has been mutilated and drained of their blood. All eyes are on a nearby university and its resident eccentric, the mysterious Dr. Mallinger, an entomologist with a fascination for Death’s-head moths. His daughter Clare shares his interests but her concerns are more personal than academic—Clare is a shapeshifter, transformed into a deadly butterfly when her blood is up and romance is in the air.
Directed by Vernon Sewell, this not so thrilling thriller features Robert Flemyng as Mallinger, and Wanda Ventham as Clare, whose blank-faced beauty suggests an otherworldly nature or a general lack of enthusiasm for the project—if it’s the latter she’s...

We’ve scoured Sherlock’s The Final Problem for tiny details and references to other stories, and here’s what we found…
Warning: contains spoilers.

With the help of the pause button and a pot of strong coffee, we’ve picked through Sherlock’s series four finale The Final Problem to seek out the nerdy references and painstakingly added background details. (You can find the same for the previous episodes here and here.)
Here goes…
1. Starting with the obvious, The Final Problem is of course the title of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1893 short story in which Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty appear to tumble to their deaths in the Reichenbach Falls. Andrew Scott’s Moriarty references the title several times in series two finale The Reichenbach Fall.

With Christmas 1970 on the horizon, the UK’s thrilling new sci-fi TV show UFO was well underway. Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's first live-action series, it was set in the future and revolved around the activities of the Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organisation (Shado), a covert agency presided over by Commander Ed Straker (Ed Bishop) to fend off alien attacks on mankind. As a wide-eyed 8-year-old I was hooked and I can recall wishing two things. One was that I could have one of the Dinky Toys’ missile-firing Shado Interceptors, which I thought then (and still think now) was the coolest among the incredible array of vehicles that appeared in the show; I’d not be nearly as forgiving today as I was back then that Dinky had manufactured it in garish green, where the ‘real’ ones on TV were white. A Twitter-friendly review of The Imitation Game would simply read: “Genius plays genius.”
That first genius would be English acting prodigy Benedict Cumberbatch, who portrays real-life mathematical mastermind and war hero Alan Turing in the critically acclaimed drama.
Taking on genius roles is nothing new for the 38-year-old actor — he’s played Stephen Hawking, Vincent Van Gogh and he continues to astound as fictional smarty-pants Sherlock Holmes in the hit BBC show "Sherlock."

The "Sherlock" Season 3 premiere, "The Empty Hearse," answered lots of questions about Sherlock's fake death, Watson's new relationship and the detective's return to crime-solving. But the episode also raised a whole bunch of questions without easy answers.
Some of those answers -- about things like Guy Fawkes Day, Derren Brown, Sherlock's explanations and more -- are here.
Need more of a "Sherlock" refresher? Click here for the full "The Empty Hearse" recap.
Guy Fawkes Day
"Sherlock" is a very British show, no matter how beloved it is around the world, so it's kind of fitting that the season premiere's major crime and a pivotal event in the episode both reference a distinctly British event: Guy Fawkes Day.
What is that? If you're like most Americans, the name "Guy Fawkes" conjures up masks and comic-book movies. You don't think of poor Watson nearly getting broiled in a bonfire. Neither...

The "Sherlock" Season 3 premiere had one particularly surprising meeting: Sherlock Holmes' parents. Knowledgeable fans, however, got an even bigger surprise: Mr. and Mrs. Holmes were played by Benedict Cumberbatch's parents, Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch and Wanda Ventham.
Both actors, the elder Cumberbatch and Ventham appear on screen for less than two minutes before their son dismisses them. The audience only finds out their identities when Sherlock mentions it in passing to Watson (Martin Freeman). Needless to say, John is a little shocked by what he sees:
"I mean, they're just so ... ordinary." -- Watson
"It's a cross I have to bear." -- Holmes
Considering that the parents are rambling about lost glasses and such, they do indeed seem like a cross for Sherlock to bear.
As for the son of the actors, Cumberbatch told the Mail Online that working with his parents was "nerve-wracking" but "brilliant."

Sherlock: 'The Empty Hearse' - Digital Spy review
Gatiss's series 3 premiere 'The Empty Hearse' introduced Sherlock Holmes's parents for the first time, played by Benedict Cumberbatch's real parents Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham.
Speaking earlier this month, Gatiss revealed that he and co-creator Steven Moffat felt more free to diverge from Arthur Conan Doyle's stories in the third series.
"This is the first time we've sort of gone beyond," Gatiss said. "I don't know if Sherlock Holmes's parents have ever been shown. It just felt the right thing to do in the third series."
"Sherlock is more likely to be the product of a loving home than a broken one, in a strange way. He's sort of slightly indulged."

Audiences last saw Sherlock plunging to his death in the season 2 finale “The Reichenbach Fall” in 2012. It was revealed at the end of that episode that the famous freelance detective had faked his death. Fans have been desperately waiting for the third season to find out how Sherlock faked his death, and, more importantly, what it will be like when Watson finds out.
Star Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock in the show, teased fans at Comic Con this summer, pretending to reveal the great secret to Sherlock’s survival. Now, fans finally have the answer: with the help of Mycroft and Molly, Sherlock managed to orchestrate the fall to appear to be dead.

Sherlock returns with a rollicking, fun start to series three. Spoilers ahead...

3.1 The Empty Hearse
That was a smart solution – perhaps the only solution– to defuse the tension of two years’ speculation without leaving anyone disappointed. Make ‘em laugh, as the old song goes. Make ‘em laugh. Make ‘em laugh. Make ‘em laugh.
The fake explanations were a jaunty way to get us all to release the breath we’d been holding since January 2012 with a guffawing splutter. Inspector Lestrade’s “Bollocks!” told us we’d been had and silenced living room orators of both the ‘I knew it!’ and the ‘Seriously? How lame is that?’ variety. Of course it wasn’t Moriarty in a Sherlock mask. Of course there wasn’t a bungee rope. Of course Sherlock didn’t crash through a window like...

Having tackled Sherlock and Khan over the past few years, Benedict Cumberbatch is certainly no stranger to playing iconic roles. And he's just added one more.
Cumberbatch finally gives us a taste of dragon Smaug in "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," out Friday, December 13. While Cumberbatch can't really "play" the CGI dragon on screen, the English actor was instrumental in Smaug's creation -- and, of course, also voices the mythical creature.
Whether or not you've seen Cumberbatch on the big screen or the stage of late (it's hard to miss him!), there's still much to know about this rising star. From his African abduction to his mutation, here are 19 things you probably don't know about Benedict Cumberbatch.
1. While on location in South Africa for "To the Ends of the Earth" (2005), Cumberbatch experienced a horrific carjacking in which he was kidnapped, but talked his way into getting released. He subsequently...

There’s barely a second to waste in television today; most shows pack plot threads into running times more tightly than sardines. But back in the days of Classic Doctor Who, there was room for a story to breathe – admittedly, sometimes too much room. Spanning from the 60s to the 80s, when a televised shot could last longer than five seconds, Classic Who had its fair share of strange asides and mind-altering trips…
Ancient skull space-out (Image of The Fendhal – Part 1)
In two minutes of today’s Doctor Who, a lot of plot can happen, and frequently does. You’d never get something like the sequence that runs part way through Image of the Fendahl’s first episode, when Thea Ransome (Wanda Ventham) forms a...

Talk about high class problems. Literally.
British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has a ghost from his past casting a shadow over his career: he was too privileged growing up. The son of actors Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham, Cumberbatch attended the Harrow school, which now charges $47703 in admission per year. As a result of his young posh education, he says casting directors are unwilling to see him in a role beyond that of a wealthy menace.
"I was brought up in a world of privilege. It can ostracize you from normal codes of conduct in society," he told the Radio Times. "Being a posh actor in England you cannot escape the class-typing from whatever side you look at it. I realized from quite early on that, although I wasn't trying to make a class specialty of it, I was playing slightly asexual, sociopathic intellectuals."

For a Time Lord, oddly The Doctor has never had much luck with stories that include the word Time. Time-Flight. Timelash. Two examples of stories that have received a mauling from the fans, and to add to that list is the first Sylvester McCoy story, Time And The Rani.
Originally, the story was apparently called Strange Matter, which would have made for a far more interesting title. And it also sums up the story a lot better, since Time And The Rani is a very strange beast indeed. Way back in 1987, Doctor Who was still in a bad place. Following the 18-month hiatus, the show had effectively gone on trial with the mammoth wink to the audience called Trial Of A Time Lord. However, while Doctor Who did live to fight another day, it still came at a price. For one thing, Colin Baker was given the boot in unceremonious fashion,...

Los Angeles – Benedict Cumberbatch's pals call him Ben. Viewers of his TV performance as a 21st-century Sherlock Holmes tend to favor "brilliant."The British TV audience went mad this summer for the three-part "Sherlock" series in which Cumberbatch makes Holmes the very model of a modern private detective, with the character's fearsome intelligence and upper-crust arrogance intact. Now Americans have the chance to discover the rising star as PBS' "Masterpiece Mystery!" airs the series on consecutive Sundays, starting this weekend and through Nov. 7, at 9 p.m. Edt (check local listings).Cumberbatch, who will be seen next year in Steven Spielberg's film adaptation of the hit London play and book "War Horse," is engaging and open during an interview from London, displaying not a whit of Holmes' chilliness. But the 34-year-old actor is a match for the great fictional detective in verbal gymnastics, spilling out answers to questions with energetic,...

One Of The kitsch classics of 70s sci-fi is to be revived and adapted into a Hollywood feature film.
British TV series UFO, which aired in 1970 and 1971, is fondly remembered for lead character Commander Ed Straker (pictured left), played by the late Ed Bishop, who bleached his hair for the first few episodes but then ended up wearing a white wig.
You may also recall the female crew on Moonbase - including actress Gabrielle Drake (pictured above) - with their purple bobbed hairdos, dramatic eye make-up and silver jumpsuits. Their commander was the glamorous Colonel Virginia Lake (pictured below), played by Wanda Ventham.
Now, nearly four decades later, the show - created by sci-fi veterans Gerry and Sylvia Anderson - is to be navigated on to the big screen by visual effects guru Matthew Gratzner, in his directorial debut, reports Variety.
