The script readings will be followed by a conversation with Lear’s former collaborators and friends discussing his approach to TV and his ability to use the sitcom format to have important conversations.

Universal International Studios has struck a first-look deal with “Call My Agent!” and “Parallèles” writer Quoc Dang Tran as it continues a charm offensive directed at international creators.
Uis has inked a first-look deal with the French-Vietnamese writer and showrunner who will develop and produce English and French-language television projects with the studio for the global market. French-language series will be co-produced with the “Marianne” writer’s recently formed label, Daïmôn Films.
“He really leads from themes that speak to his heart versus responding to the industry, so we’re excited to do business with a creator who listens to their gut instead of just what the network is mandating,” Beatrice Springborn, president of Universal International Studios, tells Variety ahead of a keynote at French TV festival Series Mania.
“That has helped him stand out as someone with a real point of view, [who] is a real visionary.”

Amazon Prime's Hanna is closing in on an end date.
The hit drama returns for its third -- and final -- season Wednesday, November 24.
Showrunner David Farr broke the news to Entertainment Weekly, dishing that a three-season run was always in the cards.
Farr (The Night Manager) writes and executive produces.
Hanna is produced by NBCUniversal International Studios, Working Title Television and Amazon Studios.
“I'm absolutely thrilled to be able to give Hanna a third season,” said Farr when the third season was officially ordered.
“When we set out on this journey, I had in my mind a drama that would excavate Hanna's past, challenge her in entirely new ways and answer the question: can she ever belong? I am truly grateful to Amazon and NBCU that we are able to continue that vision."
"I am also deeply indebted to Esmé Creed-Miles and to Mireille Enos for their continuing commitment...

Hulu’s Head of Originals Beatrice Springborn is leaving the streamer after six years to become President of UCP.
Springborn, who has shepherded series including The Handmaid’s Tale and Normal People to screen, takes over from Dawn Olmstead, who is leaving to join Anonymous Content as CEO.
The move means that Universal Studio Group, now run by Pearlena Igbokwe, has named two of the three executives to run its divisions. Last week, it was revealed that Erin Underhill was promoted to President of Universal Television, the division previously run by Igbokwe. It is still searching for a boss for NBCUniversal International Studios following the departure of Jeff Wachtel.

Jeff Wachtel has exited NBCUniversal after almost 20 years with the company, most recently serving as president of NBCUniversal International Studios, according to Deadline.
The longtime NBCU exec is leaving amid issues about respect in the workplace and just a few days after the exit of unscripted TV chief Meredith Ahr following an investigation into her and former NBC Entertainment chairman Paul Telegdy’s workplace behavior.
Telegdy and Ahr were both accused by multiple employees of fostering a toxic workplace environment. Telegdy was let go in August amid a larger NBCU shakeup.
In a bombshell report on July 31 by The Hollywood Reporter, Telegdy was accused of numerous transgressions including mocking gay executives to their faces, using homophobic and misogynistic slurs and making disparaging comments about others’ physical appearance. Telegdy and Ahr were both accused of creating a “terrible, even traumatizing experience” in the reality division.

Long-time NBCUniversal executive Jeff Wachtel has left the company, Variety has confirmed. He most recently served as president of NBCUniversal International Studios.
Variety understands that Wachtel’s departure follows some issues pertaining to respect in the workplace, after which it was agreed that Wachtel would leave the company. It’s believed a search for his replacement is underway.
Wachtel served for nearly two decades at NBCUniversal, crossing the pond to London in 2018 to oversee NBCU International’s portfolio of production companies and manage the development of formats and content partnerships for the Peacock. Replacing Michael Edelstein as head of the business’s international TV strategy, Wachtel’s arrival in the U.K. was met with much fanfare, and he became a regular face at local conferences like the Royal Television Society events.

Chris McCumber, President, Entertainment Networks — USA Network & Syfy, is leaving NBCUniversal after 19 years at the company’s flagship entertainment cable networks. He just notified his team in an internal memo (you can read it below).
The move follows the recent major realignment of NBCU’s streaming and leaner TV group, which introduced a new centralized structure under Mark Lazarus, Chairman of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. It includes Lifestyle Networks president Frances Berwick taking oversight over the newly established Entertainment Business unit.
I hear NBCU leadership looked to find a new role for McCumber, who is well liked internally and in the creative community, but ultimately, he felt it was time to leave.

Today is a good day for fans of well-crafted spy dramas with a feminist twist. Amazon Studios has announced that it has ordered a third season of Hanna, its drama starring Esmé Creed-Miles in the titular role initially made famous by Saoirse Ronan, following a “strong global launch.” We were big fans of the second season, which expanded the scope of the coming-of-age thriller for its second outing, bringing in some of the other girls who were trained by Utrax to become assassins. The first two seasons are now available to watch in their entirety on Amazon Prime Video.
Hanna is executive produced by David Farr, who also co-wrote the script for the 2011 feature film, which was directed by Joe Wright and on which the TV series is based. Farr has also previously written the scripts for The Night Manager, another beautifully-shot adaptation that has done well with a global audience.

David Farr, who co-wrote the original feature, will continue to write and executive produce going into season 3.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be able to give ‘Hanna’ a third season,” said Farr of the renewal announcement. “When we set out on this journey, I had in my mind a drama that would excavate Hanna’s past, challenge her in entirely new ways and answer the question: can she ever belong? In London on Wednesday to talk about her upcoming scripted series, “Stateless,” Cate Blanchett implored drama producers to be impolite, provocative and to make shows that start meaningful conversations.
“I love zombies, I love vampires,” the two-time Oscar-winner said. “But we’re living in a time when the political system, which is meant to deal with facts – and our job [in film and TV] is dealing with fiction – has become a burlesque. It’s cosmically bewildering.”
Blanchett said that the world “has a problem with nuance,” but it is those gray areas where good drama exists. She added that “drama should be challenging and impolite and provocative” that and producers “have to find the right way to do that.”
The Australian actor was speaking at Content London’s Drama Summit. She said Australian drama “Stateless” was a passion project that has been six years in the making, with several U.S. backers shying away from its challenging subject matter.

Kevin MacLellan is exiting NBCUniversal after nearly two decades.
MacLellan, the chairman of NBCU’s global distribution and international operations, will stay on with the company during the transition period before his official departure. Jeff Shell, chairman of NBCUniversal Film and Entertainment, made the announcement to staffers in a memo on Wednesday that has been obtained by Variety.
With MacLellan’s departure, Shell announced that NBCU is merging its domestic and international operations to “take advantage of our increased international footprint and the growing number of platforms for our content,” per the memo.
Under the new structure, Bonnie Hammer will take on oversight of NBCU’s International Studios. Jeff Wachtel, who previously reported to MacLellan, will now report to Hammer and George Cheeks.
