Charlie Austin has confirmed that he still wants to play in the Premier League and will move if the right club comes in for him, according to the Independent.
Newcastle United have been heavily linked with the Queens Park Rangers striker this summer but decided to not pay the £15 million asking price as the club had concerns about Austin’s injury problems.
The frontman ended up staying at the Championship club but it’s thought that Steve McClaren is still interested in signing the English forward and the player hasn’t ruled out a future move.
Speaking to the Independent Austin has revealed that he is focused on making sure that Qpr gain promotion back to the Premier League but has stated that he would be open to a move when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Newcastle United were unwilling to pay anywhere close to Queens Park Rangers’ £15 million valuation of Charlie Austin due to his concerning injury record, according to the Northern Echo.
The striker had been on the Magpies’ radar throughout the whole summer but despite keen interest they chose not to gamble on the player.
Austin’s injury record was the main problem. The 26-year-old suffered a shoulder injury during the 2013/14 season and there are reportedly still concerns over the player’s recovery.
Despite Aleksandar Mitrovic having already arrived from Anderlecht, the club have remained hopeful of bringing in another striker and have chased Austin for the last two months but decided that he wasn’t worth paying big money for.
It will be interesting to see if the Magpies continue their pursuit of the striker in January where he will be free to start negotiations with what would...

Charlie Austin will stay at Queens Park Rangers this transfer window and presumably until the end of the season when his contract runs out, according to Independent journalist, Sam Wallace.
Reports claim that Austin will see out his current deal that expires in the summer of 2016 and leave Qpr on a free transfer.
Austin was the fourth-top scorer in the Premier League in 2014-15 having bagged an impressive 18 goals despite playing for a side who finished bottom of the table and he has just a year left on his Loftus Road deal.
Austin has scored 107 goals in 199 league games for Swindon, Burnley and Qpr since the beginning of 2010.
Qpr have demanded £15 million for 18-goal Austin all summer but The Express claim Newcastle were unwilling to offer higher than £12 million.

Newcastle United are continuing to monitor left-back Raphael Guerreiro’s situation at Lorient, with the Magpies keen to add to their defensive contingent before the window shuts, according to reports.
Sport Witness claim that Steve McClaren has his eyes firmly set on signing the 21-year-old this summer, but that he would need to pay up to £11 million in order to sign the Lorient defender.
The versatile defender has two years remaining on his Lorient contract and he seems to be of interest to the Magpies, mainly due to the fact he can operate at both left-back and on the left-wing.

Interestingly, when Lorient’s president Loic Fery was asked about Guerreiro potentially leaving the club this transfer window earlier this month, he told L’Equipe:

Crystal Palace are set to win the race for Charlie Austin according to a report in The Mirror.
Eagles boss Alan Pardew is set to beat his former club to the signing of the England man after reportedly becoming “confident” that Queens Park Rangers would lower their £15 million valuation of the player.
The 26-year-old, who has scored four goals in four games this season for Rangers, was once again linked to Newcastle on Sunday after a report in the Mail stated that both United and Bournemouth were still interested in the striker.
This contrasts with reports earlier this month that the Magpies have ended their chase for the 18 Barclays Premier League goal hitman, however, but it is known that Steve McClaren would love to be reunited with a forward he worked closely with at Loftus Road.

Queens Park Rangers have opened up new contract negotiations with Charlie Austin, according to Sky Sports.
The 26-year-old has been reported all summer as being the subject of interest from Newcastle United and labelled as their ‘top transfer target’.
It is understood that if the England international does not move to a Premier League in this window then the club will offer their striker – who played in Qpr’s 2-0 opening day defeat against Charlton at the weekend – a new deal.
Sky Sports sources understand that Austin will not leave Loftus Road unless a prospective buyer meets his £15m valuation and the Magpies are yet to offer that.
The Daily Express claimed that if the Tyneside club were unsuccessful in their attempts to sign the Queens Park Rangers forward, they will instead turn their attentions to 22-year-old Diego Rolan.

Gabriel Obertan dealt with a “hell of an attacking full-back” in Cedric Soares – perfectly vindicating the “tactical reasons” behind why he was selected against Southampton, Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren believes.
Many eyebrows were raised among certain sections of the St James’ Park crowd when Obertan was selected on the left ahead of the likes of Rolando Aarons and Ayoze Perez on Sunday.
However, not only did Obertan provide an assist for Georginio Wijnaldum’s debut goal during the 2-2 draw, McClaren also believes the Frenchman’s defensive contribution helped force Southampton into hooking Soares at half-time.
John Walton/Empics Sport
The Saints full-back was booked during the opening 45 minutes and struggled to get the better of Obertan, even if former Sporting Lisbon defender Soares did give Massadio Haidara and Fabricio Coloccini the run-around on a couple of occasions.

Afc Bournemouth’s start to life in the Barclays Premier League ended in a harsh lesson in taking your chances for the top-flight newboys as Rudy Gestede came off the bench to snatch all three points for Aston Villa at the Vitality Stadium.
The Cherries – in their first-ever match in England’s top tier – dominated possession for long periods of the game and they enjoyed more chances than the visitors, but Villa’s clinical finishing saw Tim Sherwood’s side head back to Birmingham with the victory.
Eddie Howe has worked wonders to get the south coast club into the Premier League, but now it’s all about turning them into a side who can compete with England’s big boys, and there is still work to do as far as that is concerned.
And yet it all started so brightly for Bournemouth, with ex-Newcastle United...

Newcastle United are still aiming to recruit three players before the summer transfer window shuts – including at least one of two wingers, according to reports.
The Chronicle claim that the Magpies are still hoping to sign a winger, a forward and even a centre-back – as long as they can offload one of their current crop.
Interestingly, the publication suggests that Steve McClaren also wants a winger and that he is looking to add at least one of Sparta Prague’s Ladislav Krejci or Marseille’s Florian Thauvin to his squad this summer, if not both.

Having already netted twice in 14 senior Czech Republic caps, Sparta Prague left-winger Krejci is already making waves in Eastern Europe.
Earlier this summer, BT Sport report that Krejci – a player dubbed as “the new Pavel Nedved” – could be available for somewhere between £6 million-£10 million this summer.

Jose Mourinho believes Newcastle United’s summer signing Georginio Wijnaldum is talented enough to play for Barclays Premier League Champions Chelsea.
The Blues boss did not only single Wijnaldum out for praise, however, also picking out former Magpie Yohan Cabaye and Bournemouth’s new signing Max Gradel as he aimed to explain how difficult it is even for the top-four sides to sign players in a highly-competitive market.
Wijnaldum arrived on Tyneside from Psv Eindhoven for £14.5 million this summer and the Dutch international is extremely highly rated, most notably because he scored 18 goals in 42 goals as he led the Dutch side to the Eredivisie title in 2014-15.

And, speaking about Wijnaldum and the others, Mourinho told BBC Sport:

Newcastle United are monitoring Jesse Lingard’s situation at Manchester United, according to reports.
Espn Fc claim that Steve McClaren wants to be reunited with a player he took on loan to Derby County last season on Tyneside. He can operate as an attacking-midfielder or a striker.
A Man Utd youth product, Lingard has been touted by onlookers for several years as a future England international midfielder – and he has been consistently linked to Newcastle this summer.

Capped 11 times by the Under-21s to date, Lingard has failed to break into the Man Utd first team – instead spending time on loan at Leicester City, Birmingham City, Brighton & Hove Albion, and latterly Derby.
McClaren used Lingard 12 times during the latter half of the 2014-15 season, having signed him on loan on deadline day in February, and was a key component of the Derby side.

You have already clicked on Eden Hazard, he’s already warming up and he will undoubtedly stay in your midfield until May. But who should line up alongside the Fantasy Football serial points scorer? Well, you need to be crafty and concoct a perfect blend of bargains mixed with a significant portion of first-class talent in order to perform consistently all season.
The likes of Eden Hazard, Alexis Sanchez and David Silva (only one of them makes this list) are what I like to call risk-free captain material. Essentially, a reliable pair of hands who regardless of their opposition can bring home the big points. It’s borderline impossible to select all three and still maintain a formidable balance across all areas of the pitch therefore you must look further afield and inspect every corner of the Premier League’s dressing rooms during your quest to find the next Nacer Chadli.

This summer, Newcastle United have experienced a refreshing transformation. A new head coach, a complete overhaul of the backroom staff, two very decent signings and the removal of “the best coach in the Premier League” has resuscitated a gasping Geordie fanbase who were minutes away from switching off their football life support machine.
Mike Ashley’s latest big-money purchases – Aleksandar Mitrovic and Georginio Wijnaldum – have hinted at much-craved ambition from the man upstairs and a warmth (that has nothing to do with the weather) has swept across Tyneside. But, just like leaving the house on a sun-drenched Friday afternoon for six pints of watered-down lager with your pals, only to find you have managed to lose your wallet somewhere along your commute, there is a slight hitch among the positives.
The club has forgotten about defenders. Remember them? They’re the ones that don’t tend...

Oxford are hoping to take the 18-year-old stopper on a season-long loan deal during the forthcoming campaign, with Woodman keen to gain first-team experience having failed to make an appearance during a one-month temporary switch to Hartlepool United in 2014-15 – and the goalkeeper has impressed in a couple of pre-season appearances for the Magpies.

If Steve McClaren didn’t know what Newcastle United’s biggest problem defensively has been for the past few seasons, then he certainly does now. Set-pieces have been a shambles both offensively and defensively for the Magpies for years – and playing a back four with only one recognised centre-back in it certainly didn’t help matters.
Centre-backs are a priority for the Magpies and, although Chancel Mbemba is set to arrive later this week – with his medical potentially pencilled in for Thursday – more need to follow as the Newcastle defence were breached four times in a 4-3 defeat to Portland Timbers 2.
However, the main bright spark for Newcastle was the continued emergence of Rolando Aarons. The youngster bagged a brace – including a magnificent overhead kick – to drag United back into the game, but for some reason the visitors only decided to start playing after 75 minutes.

Top quality strikers win you matches. They are the difference between winning the league or narrowly missing out. The same can be said for your fantasy football team. Yes, you need to have a balance in your side and it is important to have players contributing points from every position, but if you do not possess forwards that are scoring goals regularly then you have no chance of winning the top prize.
I have chosen 10 forwards that you should consider when choosing your fantasy football team for the new season. Some of them are obvious choices that cannot be ignored, whilst some look like great value for money.
There is nothing more satisfying than turning on Match of the Day on a Saturday night and watching the striker that you have got in your team wheel away in celebration after yet another goal. So choose wisely.

Newcastle United are currently midway through an extremely important summer transfer window – and finally their first signing is through the door, with another very soon to follow. Having only just confirmed their Premier League status on the final day of last season, Mike Ashley came out and insisted he did not want a repeat of such a scenario during the 2015-16 campaign and would invest to ensure it would not happen again.
Steve McClaren was unveiled as the Magpies’ new boss last month but it took until a week gone Friday for Newcastle to announce their first signing of the summer – the £14.5 million acquisition of Georginio Wijnaldum from Psv Eindhoven. He is the Magpies’ third most-expensive transfer in history, their first incoming in 335 days – and the biggest outlay Mike Ashley has ever lavished has been on the attacking-midfielder. Anderlecht’s Aleksandar Mitrovic looks likely to follow...

Newcastle United look set to complete their double raid of Belgian side Anderlecht within the next couple of days by bringing forward Aleksandar Mitrovic and defender Chancel Mbemba to St James’ Park in a deal worth around £20.3 million.
Mitrovic, 20, will sign for the Magpies in a £12.3 million deal after Newcastle held off competition from the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Swansea City, Roma and Porto for the Serbian international – with head coach Steve McClaren confirming the club are “close” to getting new recruits through the door.
Meanwhile, 20-year-old Mbemba looks set to arrive for a fee in the region of £7 million (€ 10 million) as the Magpies aim to make their first defensive recruit of the summer, with more potentially to follow as they look to shore up a backline that conceded an eye-watering 61 Premier League goals last season.

Newcastle United have gone into overdrive – and Magpies supporters are in a state of confused shock, excitement and outright delirium.
The Magpies are closing on their second signing of the summer transfer window, with Aleksandar Mitrovic set to arrive in a £12.3 million deal from Belgian side Anderlecht. After saying goodbye to his Anderlecht teammates, Mitrovic flew into the North East on Saturday to complete his medical.
First, Newcastle recruited attacking-midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum from Psv Eindhoven for £14.5 million last week to finally break their summer transfer duck. Now, Mitrovic has flown to Tyneside in order to undergo his medical and complete his move to St James’ Park.

Newcastle United are closing in on their second major transfer dealing of the summer – with Aleksandar Mitrovic set to fly into Tyneside after saying goodbye to his Anderlecht teammates.
Journalist Niels Vleminckx of Belgian paper Hln tweeted on Saturday that Mitrovic had said his farewells to the Anderlecht squad and that he will have his medical at Newcastle “soon” after the Magpies had a £12.3 million bid accepted for the striker.
Interestingly, Vleminckx remains adamant that Mitrovic’s Anderlecht teammate Chancel Mbemba is high on Newcastle’s defensive priority list, with the Magpies believed to be contemplating launching a second bid in the next few days after this first was rebuffed, WhatCulture.com/Nufc understands.

Newcastle United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Aleksandar Mitrovic, with reports suggesting they could finalise the long-protracted deal for the Anderlecht forward in the coming days.
Although Porto attempted to hijack the deal with a bid bankrolled by investment firm Doyen Sports, it appears Newcastle’s £12.3 million offer was already too far down the line for it to have made a difference.
In fact, The Chronicle claim that reports in Belgium suggest United want Mitrovic to fly out to America before the completion of their pre-season tour of the States.
John Walton/Empics Sport
The deal for Mitrovic is said to include a five per cent sell-on fee that Anderlecht would receive in the future, while the 20-year-old’s first club Partizan Belgrade are set to pocket roughly £4.6 million of the money Newcastle have splurged on the Serbian international.

Georginio Wijnaldum is “looking forward” to potentially making his Newcastle United debut against Sacramento Republic this weekend after training with the squad for the first time.
The £14.5 million signing from Psv Eindhoven touched down in California on Wednesday and took part in his opening Magpies pre-season training session on Thursday.
While the Dutchman is hoping to make his debut against Sacramento on Saturday night (Sunday morning in the UK), Steve McClaren has insisted he will assess the attacking-midfielder’s fitness before throwing him into the fray.

Speaking to nufcTV after his first Newcastle training session on Thursday, Wijnaldum said ahead of the game:
“Yes I look forward (to making my debut against Sacremento) to playing with my new team as I want to play with my teammates on the pitch.
“Today I could see how good they are so I want to see them during the game.

Sunderland have confirmed the signing of Dutch international Jeremain Lens, for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £9,000,000. An offer was rejected by Dynamo Kyiv last week, only for the Black Cats to return with an improved bid in order to land their man.
The 27 year old seems a perfect fit for Dick Advocaat’s 4-3-3 formation, capable of being deployed in a wide attacking role or as an out-and-out striker.
Lens came through the ranks at Az Alkmaar before earning a move to Psv Eindhoven, where he proved his versatility by playing on both flanks, as well as occasionally operating in a “second striker” role behind the main forward. He played under Advocaat at both teams, forming a bond which is seen as instrumental in his decision to move to Sunderland.

Arsenal are into the final of the Barclays Asia Trophy after beating a Singapore Select XI 4-0 in their first pre-season game. A hat-trick from youngster Chuba Akpom as well as a Jack Wilshere penalty gave Arsenal a comfortable victory, and they will now go on to face Everton in the final on Saturday. Arsene Wenger put trust in his young squad, having only named six substitutes for the match and opportunities being given to several youth players.
Several big names were not involved, with the likes of Mesut Özil, Petr Cech and Alexis Sanchez missing out. The youngsters did not hesitate to take their chance though, with Arsenal always in control and rarely threatened at the back against what was a very average Singapore Select XI. New signing Cech is expected to start on Saturday, after youngster Emiliano Martinez was given a chance to impress in their landslide victory.

Aleksandar Mitrovic could reject a move to Newcastle United due to the fact the Magpies are not in the Champions League next season.
Hln.be claim Roma, Porto and Benfica cannot afford the £12 million (€17 million) that Anderlecht want for the 20-year-old forward, but that Newcastle are willing to stump up the cash.

Newcastle United supporters have had to endure some pretty bleak transfer windows in recent years to say the least.
Joe Kinnear’s disastrous tenure as “director of football” resulted in the club failing to make a permanent signing for 18 months, as only Loic Remy and then Luuk de Jong arrived on loan during successive windows, while the Magpies also failed to strengthen their squad in January 2015.
However, it is not merely the failure to adequately recruit bodies that can leave Toon supporters frustrated – it is also signing the wrong players.

Manchester United have been told they must break their transfer record if they want Napoli’s Argentine international Gonzalo Higuain to be playing at Old Trafford next season.
Sky Sports claim the Italian club have insisted that the striker will only leave Stadio San Paolo if his £72m buyout clause is met after The Red Devils and Arsenal were linked with his signature.

Newcastle United have a massive summer ahead of them. Having only just confirmed their Premier League status on the final day of last season, they want to avoid a repeat of such a scenario during the 2015-16 campaign.
Now that Steve McClaren has been confirmed as the new head coach on a deal that could rise to as many as eight years, the former England manager will be keen to get his hands on Mike Ashley’s chequebook so his reign gets off to a flying start.
Players will depart St James’ Park in the coming weeks, but equally, at least seven are believed to be likely to arrive on Tyneside. Centre-backs, wingers and strikers are of the utmost priority, with at least two proven forwards wanted by the Magpies.
As ever, plenty of players have been linked with a move to St James’ Park with...

Newcastle need to strengthen this summer. There’s absolutely no denying it.
An already threadbare squad was cut down to the absolute bare minimum during last season and the respective departures of both Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Davide Santon contributed to the team’s close call with Premier League relegation.
Newcastle simply didn’t have the options. They were forced to plug round holes with square pegs as players were continuously played out of position. Although, Ryan Taylor’s continued preference in central midfield can only be put down to come sort of sick fetish John Carver had for his ‘set piece specialist’.
One problem that Newcastle will have this summer is attracting players of a suitable quality to improve their team. (Although, the way they played for most of the 2014/15 season you would be forgiven for thinking they couldn’t buy Anyone to hamper the side’s quality.

Newcastle United attacking-midfielder Haris Vuckic has been in fine form for Rangers in the Scottish Championship – in fact he has been playing so well that Greek champions Olympiakos want to sign him.
A side who feature in the Champions League on a regular basis are keen on taking Vuckic to Greece, yet the Magpies could not even find a place in their struggling squad for the midfielder.
What’s more, Vuckic has been extremely impressive throughout his time in Scotland – with the 22-year-old Slovenian international having scored nine goals and contributed three assists in 18 matches from attacking-midfield for Rangers since moving on transfer deadline day in January.

And, with just a year remaining on his Magpies contract, his future could well lie away from Tyneside – with both Nottingham Forest and Olympiakos keen on signing him.

Just look at former Lyon captain and Brazil international Claudio Cacapa’s face. No wonder Newcastle United were relegated in 2009 with characters like this in their squad.
It’s a season that will be looked back on with some distain obviously, but one that ultimately looked the have been for the club’s best interest when they qualified for the Europa League in 2012. It cleared the squad of all the dead weight and overly inflated egos, leaving true professionals behind that only wanted the best for the club.
However, since Mike Ashley decided not to kick on and spend on the squad when the club was at its most appealing, we now find ourselves with a squad bereft of any real quality and facing a similarly turbulent end to the season like six years ago.
In all fairness, the 2008/09 season started off pretty well…

Newcastle United will not be able to sign Charlie Austin at a “bargain-bucket” price this summer and have been warned by their former forward Les Ferdinand that they must be prepared to part with a substantial amount of cash to sign the Queens Park Rangers striker.
The Magpies are the bookies’ favourites to land Austin this summer ahead of the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Southampton, but securing the forward’s signature from the already-relegated club will not come cheap according to Ferdinand, Qpr’s director of football.
Austin is the fourth-top scorer in the Premier League this season having bagged an impressive 17 goals despite playing for a side who are bottom of the table.

Newcastle United are being heavily linked with moves for two players that were “suspended indefinitely”, or sacked in layman’s terms, by their club a couple of days ago.
The Magpies are rumoured to be keeping tabs on both Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sidney Sam after their respective careers at Schalke came to an abrupt end at the weekend.
The pair were told they could find new clubs following the 2-0 defeat to Koln after the club’s sporting director Horst Heidt threatened “consequences” should they fail to win the game.
Manager Roberto Di Matteo blamed a “lack of mutual trust” which suggests there more than initially meets the eye with this story.
And should Newcastle actually go through with their interest and sign the pair, they will need a real manager to keep everything in check.
John Carver just won’t do.

Football Manager is more than a game, it’s a career, an all-consuming, round-the-clock operation designed to drag minnows from the depths of non-league football up to jostling with the European elite, and it’s going to get even better.
The beauty of Football Manager is that the basic formula has remained the same throughout its entire existence, that’s not through laziness, it’s purely because the original Championship Manager system was perfect. If it ain’t broke, why fix it?
But that doesn’t mean Sports Interactive are resting on their record-breaking franchise. They’re always looking for ways to tweak and enhance the system to add layer-upon-layer of glorious realism, making the thousands of hours spent by each manager holed up in their bedrooms a fraction more worthwhile.
Obviously the creators can’t stop the mighty Stockport County blasting their way to the...

Wolfsburg have warned Newcastle United and other potential Premier League suitors off their star striker Bas Dost – revealing they have “no reason” to sell their prize forward.
The Magpies are believed to be competing with Southampton, Stoke City and Swansea City for the 25-year-old two-cap Dutch international striker, who is likely to cost at least £12 million if he is to be prised away from Germany this summer.
Dost is making serious waves in the Bundesliga this season – he has scored 16 goals in just 23 games for Wolfsburg, including 13 in 14 league matches – and he is being tracked by several European clubs. Most notably, the 6ft 5ins forward created headlines across the continent after he bagged four goals in a 5-4 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in February.

Despite Newcastle United’s perilous Premier League position it appears the club are already preparing themselves for life in the top flight next season – with reports suggesting they have agreed a £15 million fee with Anderlecht for striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.
The 20-year-old Serbian has netted 41 goals in 86 matches for the Belgian club, and has a career total of 66 strikes from 154 games.
Although clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have been linked to the 6ft 3in forward, Newcastle have agreed to part with £15 million for a player they have courted for more than a year according to Italian website gianlucadimarzio.com.
Geert Vanden Wijngaert/AP
The report claims that personal terms have yet to be agreed with Mitrovic himself, but that the Magpies have matched the club’s asking price for the forward.

For those Newcastle United fans who fear history is repeating itself and the Magpies are heading for the drop just as they were in 2008-09 then the following statistic offers no comfort at all: John Carver has a worse Premier League points-per-game ratio than Alan Shearer did.
In the eight games Shearer oversaw at the end of the relegation season of 2008-09, he managed five points – while Carver has taken just eight from 15 matches this campaign. That means that Shearer’s point-per-game record actually shades Carver at 0.625 compared to the current Newcastle boss’ 0.6.
The difference is so minimal that it is hardly significant in terms of comparing their abilities as managers, but it certainly highlights the perilous position the Magpies find themselves in.
If Carver’s points-per-game record was extended to the entire season then Newcastle would finish with just 23 points – three less than current basement boys Burnley have.

Borussia Dortmund will be hoping their recent upturn in fortunes can continue when they travel to Juventus in the Champions League round of 16 tonight.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have returned to form in the Bundesliga by winning their last three games to climb to 12th in the table. Inexplicably, Der Bvb have spent the majority of the season in the Bundesliga’s relegation zone.
Despite this, they finished joint top of group D alongside Arsenal on 13 points, claiming first position on goal difference. They actually handed The Gunners one of the most comprehensive 2-0 defeats in the history of football.
The 2013 finalists face a stern challenge in getting past the Italian Giants and into the quarter-finals.
Juve have won the last three Serie A titles, and look set to make it four on the spin as they currently sit nine points ahead of second-place Roma.

Tottenham kick off a hectic set of fixtures with a Europa League last 32 clash against Fiorentina tonight.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have six games in 17 days, including a trip to Italy in the reverse fixture against Fiorentina, and the Capital One Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley.
Spurs are looking to better last season’s progress in the Europa League, when they lost to Benfica in the last 16. The Lilly Whites lost the first leg 3-1 at White Hart Lane before coming close to forcing extra time over in Portugal.
Spurs will be disappointed with their showing in the group stages of this season’s competition.
While Mauricio Pochettino was trying to get his message across in the infancy of his reign, Spurs finished second in a group that included Beşiktaş, Asteras and Partizan Belgrade.

After a day of mixed fortunes which saw first choice target Graham Dorrans slip away to Norwich City, but Danny Ings remaining at the club, Burnley are rallying late to bring in a new midfielder to cement their hopes of staying in the Premier League. After seeing a £3m bid for the Scottish player knocked back, their focus has now turned to Nottingham Forest player Henri Lansbury.
Burnley tried to sign Lansbury in the summer, but the player went on to sign a new contract at the club. But times have changed at Forest since then: the club are struggling to realise their promotion potential, even with Britt Assombalonga scoring well and Stuart Pearce has been moved on.
The player is now the subject of renewed negotiations between the two clubs, and a deal could well be done in the final few hours of the window.
